Oak Hill students create model roller coaster

Studying the Law of Conservation of Energy, Mrs. Clayton’s eighth grade physical science class build a model roller coaster in order to study how potential and kinetic energy is transferred throughout the system. The students also learn how to determine if the roller coaster is mathematically functional based on energy and speed calculations in preparation for their own model rollercoaster they will build themselves.

BHS hosts madrigal dinner

Creekside students use dominoes to learn their numerals Madrigal dinners were popular in the Medieval and Renaissance period in history. The Baldwin High School Chorus presented a Madrigal Dinner Thursday night, Nov. 18. One hundred twenty chorus students dressed in traditional costumes and entertained their guests with singing, dancing, juggling, comedy and more. There was a wonderful dinner catered by Laura Cummings. The event was sold out. Pictured: Elizabeth Logue and Landon Martin in costume for the madrigal dinner.

BHS Reality Check

ER students shoot for the stars

Approximately 296 Baldwin High School juniors received a dose of reality via the Baldwin County Chamber of Commerce and their “Reality Check.” Each student was given a job, a salary and in some cases a family. Each student was then sent into “reality.” The new Baldwin High School fine arts lobby was filled will businesses from the community willing to provide these students with their services for a cost and with each bill the student was obligated to pay with their set salary.

Students soon realized the value of a dollar and had to learn to prioritize luxury from necessity.

Maj. Clay McElheny Senior Physics Class recently studied the science of Hovercrafts. Hovercrafts use the physical sciences of lift, propulsion, and aerodynamics. The students worked together in teams to design and build their own hovercrafts. Leaf blowers were used to power their creations. Midway Elementary hosts breakfast

Third graders and their parents had fun one Friday morning at Midway Elementary! Parents came for breakfast and academic games from 7:30 to 8:30.

After juice and doughnuts, parents went to their child’s classroom for games. Pictured: Shakerria Ford’s parents enjoying a game of multiplication tictac-toe with students in Mrs. Sills’ class. Baldwin High CTAE holds annual career fair Baldwin High Career, Technical, and Agriculture Education (CTAE) department held its fourth annual Career Fair Oct. 26 and 27. Students from the school’s ninth and 10th grades had an opportunity to learn about career pathways and meet business partners from the community who offer employment in those pathways. More than 450 students participated.

The career fair changed dramatically from previous years. For the first time, ninth-graders were invited to attend. Also, in order to emphasize non-traditional careers, girls and boys attended separate sessions. In each session the gender of the business partner matched the gender of the students. For example, girls talked about automotive and marketing careers to encouraged girls to pursue automotive and marketing careers, while boys talked about nursing and culinary arts careers to encouraged boys pursue nursing and culinary arts.

Business representation came from Robins Federal, Exchange Bank, Chick-fil-A, Jiffy Lube, Light Force Family Chiropractic, the Georgia College Department of Kinesiology, Better Business Bureau, Georgia Forestry Commission, and Georgia Department of Labor. Students were able to talk to business partners oneon-one and ask about their careers and how they could prepare themselves for similar jobs.

Students were also provided information on Career Pathways offered at Baldwin and were encouraged to choose a Pathway that appealed to them and take the three or four related Career Pathway courses that would enable them to achieve Career Pathway Completer status.

“Each pathway has a minimum of three classes that are required,” stated Laurie Wallace, Baldwin ECP coordinator. “Many of our Career

Pathways have classes that articulate with Central Georgia Technical College. That means that if a student takes a class at Baldwin that articulates, then they need only to take an exemption test at Central Georgia Tech to get credit for the class there.

Students enter CGTC with course credit already and can finish their postsecondary course of study sooner and get out into the working world.”

Baldwin High offers career pathways in business and computer science, marketing, healthcare science, family and consumer science, construction, automotive, cosmetology and agriculture. Each program has several pathways. Students are urged to choose a pathway early in their high school career.

GEORGIA MILITARY COLLEGE

“By choosing early, students can benefit from all a Career Pathway has to offer,” explained Dr. Marilynn Skinner, career fair coordinator. “If a student chooses a Career Pathway in the ninth grade and begins classes for it in the 10th, then by the time they are a senior they may be eligible to participate in work-based learning, leave school early, and partici-

pate in on-the-job training. Or, they may be eligible to participate in dual or joint enrollment and get a jumpstart on their postsecondary education. Early choice also gives students the opportunity of taking advantage of leadership activities with Career and Technical Student Organizations such as FBLA, FFA, DECA, HOSA, and Skills USA.”

PBS recognizes outstanding GMC eighth-graders teacher and students at BHS complete cotillion class The Baldwin High School Positive Behavior Support (PBS) team recently recognized students and teachers who made a positive difference in October.

Mrs. Margie Brawner was recognized as the winner of the “Did You Know?” drawing for going above and beyond her duty to make sure students succeed. Brawner, a vocational secretary, is very special to the students, faculty and staff of Baldwin High School. She is married and has two wonderful children.

Students from each grade level were also recognized for being “Students of Distinction” by their teachers.

Freshman Rukia Jackson was nominated by Mrs. Eubanks for her positive

attitude and leadership in class. Rukia is the daughter of Renate and Paul Jackson. She is a cheerful young lady with a penchant for learning. Rukia enjoys dancing and she is a member of the Baldwin High School brigade and Navy Junior ROTC. Her longterm goals include going to college and becoming a pediatrician.

Sophomore Keashia Jackson was nominated by Navy Junior ROTC as a Student of Distinction. She loves to sing. She is the daughter of Jennie Barnes and Bobby Jackson. She is involved with BHS Navy Junior ROTC. She is considering the Navy as a career or she would like to attend Fort Valley State University.

Chelsea Warren, a junior

at BHS, was nominated by Mr. Turner. She always has a smile and contributes positively in class.

Chelsea’s parents, Ollie and Luscious Warren, are very proud of her. She plays tennis, and likes to shop and text message. She also likes to help her dad with construction projects. She is a member of Baldwin High School Health Occupations Students of America and hopes to become an obstetrician and gynecologist or a pediatrician.

James Lee, is the senior student of distinction for October. He is the son of Edward and Donna Lee. He has an afterschool job and is a dedicated employee. He plans to attend college and become a nurse.

BHS Science Club hosts seminar

The BHS Science Club hosted a seminar on Wednesday, Dec. 1st, for three Georgia College students majoring in science to discuss their college experiences in various academic and collegiate endeavors. Environmental science majors John Rigdon and Chad Hobson, both seniors, advised the high school majors on a variety of subjects, including study habitats, potential careers, study abroad opportunities, etc. Graduate student Anthony Alexander presented the results of an undergraduate research experiment he conducted while attending North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC. His research, Comparison of Light Sources and Their Influence on Plant Growth and Development, helped students understand the relationship between scientific research and real-world applications. More than 30 students, from AP Biology and Gifted Chemistry courses, attended the event.

The GMC Prep School eighth grade cotillion class recently participated in a three course lunch at Aubri Lane’s.

During the lunch, students practiced proper dining etiquette and table manners in preparation for the annual Dining-In event that is held each spring. Pictured: Parker Williams and Montana Pippin.

Earning technical college credit at BHS

Did you know students can earn course credit toward a program of study at Central Georgia Technical College — while still at Baldwin High School? They can, through Education and Career Partnerships. In April of last year Baldwin High School’s Career, Technical and Agriculture (CTAE), mathematics and English language arts faculty networked one-on-one with CGTC faculty to align curriculum. Curriculum alignment allows students meeting BHS CTAE course standards the opportunity to exempt a related course when enrolling in a program of study at CGTC. Baldwin currently has 31 courses that fall under a partnership agreement with CGTC.
