JMA administrators take pies in the face Three John Milledge Academy administrators took a pie in the face in May to support reading for pleasure among JM’s elementary students. Retiring headmaster, Larry Prestridge, new headmaster, Mark Hopkins, and Director of Admissions, Jason Miller, were the recipients of pies enthusiastically thrown by JM elementary’s top readers. The seventh grade students from Georgia Military College Prep School visited Lockerly Arboretum April 7 and 8. The students measured the heights of trees by using proportions of similar figures. The students also completed a modeling activity that showed interactions with predator and prey and how introducing these species affect these populations in an ecosystem.

They went on a nature walk to study examples of symbiosis and used a dichotomous key to identify trees. Lastly, they did a pond survey on macro invertebrates. Although it was a field trip at a beautiful place, math and science were the main focus of the event. Pictured: Kelly Pennington and John David Edgars measuring trees.

Top John Milledge AR readers get to pie administrators John Milledge Academy elementary teachers set a goal of 3,000 books to be read over a 12-week period (February through April).

The students nearly doubled their goal by reading 5,459 books!

In kindergarten, for every three books read by Mrs. Emily Furr and Mrs. Gayle Durham’s one one shape was placed on the hall walls.

For every book read and Accelerated Reader test passed in grades first through fifth, a pie shape was decorated with the student’s name and book title and placed on the hall walls. Imagine over three thousand pie shapes plastered the walls of the halls in the elementary building.

The top reader for kindergarten was Bethany Furr with 174 books read.

She had the pleasure of putting a pie in the face of Mr. Jason Miller.

In the first and second grade, first grader Andrew Barnes read and passed AR tests for 108 books.

Barnes enjoyed putting a pie in the face of Mr. Larry Prestridge, JMA headmaster of 30 years.

Fourth grader, Hailey Wilkinson, read and passed AR tests for 53 books.

She was the top reader for third through fifth grades and she had the opportunity to throw a pie in the face of soon-to-be headmaster, Mr. Mark Hopkins.

GMC Middle School holds promotions, change of command ceremony On May 25, 2011, two very significant events took place during the Georgia Militar y College Middle School final formation of the school year.

First, a special promotion ceremony was held for the new Battalion Commander, the Battalion Executive Officer, three Company Commanders and the new Command Sergeant Major.

Those promoted were: c/LTC Patrick C. Lewis, c/Major Annalegh Phillips, c/Captain Scott Niblett, c/Captain Sarai Mapp, c/Captain Sarah Margret Mason, and c/CSM Trevor Sibilsky. c/Major Annalegh Phillips assumed the duties of the Battalion Executive Officer, the second in command of the Battalion, taking over for c/Major Macy Watkins. c/CSM Trevor Sibilsky assumed the duties of the Battalion Command Sergeant Major, the senior Battalion non-commissioned officer. c/CSM Ashley Vinson was the outgoing Command Sergeant Major.

Next, the Change of Command Ceremony for the 3rd Battalion occurred.

This ceremony is a time-honored tradition which formally symbolizes the continuity of authority as the command is passed from one individual to another, depicted by physically passing the Battalion or Company guidon. c/LTC Patrick C. Lewis assumed command of the 3rd Battalion, 133rd Regiment and will ser ve as the 2011-2012

Pre-k students enjoy visit with ELC classes Mrs. Crane and Mrs. Eubanks’ kindergarten class at Eagle Ridge Elementary School enjoyed a visit with the pre-kindergarten students from the Early Learning Center. The kindergarten students were able to collaborate with the pre-kindergarten students to complete a portrait of themselves as friends. ER students have a great time at ‘Sight Word Egg Hunt’

Mrs. McCroskey and Mrs. Johnson’s kindergarten class at Eagle Ridge had a great time having a ‘Sight Word Egg Hunt.’ A special thanks to the parents who wrote sight words onto plastic eggs. The class had a great time reading and hunting them. However, the class all agreed the best part of all was the treats inside the eggs! A special thanks to Kimberlie’s mom who was able to take pictures for the day.

ER students enjoy their Mystery Reader Mrs. Crane and Mrs. Eubanks’ kindergarten class at Eagle Ridge Elementary School were mesmerized by "mystery reader" Mr. John Hitchcock (Evan Hitchcock's Dad).

Kindergarten and first grade celebrate Dr. Seuss’s Birthday at Eagle Ridge Elementary Mrs. McCroskey and Mrs. Johnson’s kindergarten class at Eagle Ridge Elementary had a great time celebrating Dr. Seuss’s Birthday! A very special guest, Mrs. Burns, a first grade teacher at Eagle Ridge, came and read to the class. The students loved hearing the story, “Green Eggs and Ham.” Thanks, Mrs. Burns, for helping put the fun back into reading!
