(ARA) - All the gravy has been ladled. The cookies have crumbled. The red and green candies are on the clearance rack. That can only mean one thing: people all over the country are resolving to eat better, if not less often. The start of the New Year - and with it, a new decade - means that consumers are focusing on their resolutions to live a healthier lifestyle for themselves, their loved ones, and, for that matter, the planet. Indeed, there is no time like the present to follow up on your pledge to finally shed those nagging extra pounds, add healthier foods to your diet or slowly incorporate natural, organic and sustainable products into your shopping lists. January is the high point of the year for making such changes. The hardest part about New Year's resolutions, of course, isn't making them, it's keeping them. To that end, changing a diet or lifestyle should not be viewed from the outset as a hurdle or a chore. Making it easy, affordable - and fun helps make a resolution stick. The next best thing - or maybe just the best thing. We've all seen illustrations along the lines of "eat this . . . not that," that show a bag of chips which should be replaced by, say, a raw handful of vegetables. But for those of

Page 3

You say you want a resolution . . . here's one for healthier food habits

us who like to crunch on some salty snacks as we unwind after a busy day or eat lunch in the middle of the day, such substitutions can seem more like a penalty than a reward. If you're feeling that way, look for foods that offer some attributes of traditionally craved snacks. Snyder's of Hanover, for instance, recently introduced new Pretzel Chips that offer the hearty flavor of fresh pretzels along with the slight, crisp texture of traditional potato chips with less than 1 gram of fat per serving. Pretzel Chips, in Original and Garden Veggie, also fit into any resolutions to go natural for 2010: the products are all natural, with no trans fats. There are many other quick and rewarding substitutions that can be made when the craving for something crunchy and satisfying starts in earnest, from fruit and vegetable crisps to 100-calorie packs. Meantime, if it's something sweet you're craving, seek out portion-controlled 100-calorie ice cream novelties or grab a square or two of antioxidant-rich dark chocolate. Fun, tasty ways to get fit in 2010 (ARA) - If you resolved to get healthier this year, you've probably started evaluating exercise programs and healthy foods to eat. But don't forget to include fun and enjoyment in your resolution, because that is the best way to keep it going all year long. Here are some suggestions to start your wellness resolution off on the right foot: * Incorporate your exercise program into activities you're already doing. For example, if you drive to work every day, instead of parking as close to the door as you can, try parking a long distance away or, better yet, bike to work. Once at work, instead of e-mailing or calling a coworker to discuss something, get up and walk over to her desk and have an in-person conversation. Take the stairs rather than the elevator. Dance to the radio while brushing your teeth at home - anything to increase the amount you are moving without changing your entire routine.

* If you already cook, go online, purchase a new cookbook or sign up for a cooking class and find some new healthy recipes. If you don't cook, consider learning how. You can challenge yourself to learn one new recipe every week, or turn your learning into a social event by inviting friends over for one of your meals. * Relax with a cup of tea. Natural tea can help you reduce body fat and increase your metabolism rate. Studies have shown that Oolong tea leaves contain rich amino acids and cellulose, which lowers cholesterol and boosts metabolism. Green tea leaves contain vitamins C and E, as well as high fiber. And black tea leaves help with digestion. Having a cup of hot tea - without sugar or cream - after each meal will help you to slowly dissolve fat in your body. Look for premium tea leaves through Teawan (www.Teawan.com), quality tea and teaware products from Taiwan.

To brew Kung-Fu Tea, follow these steps: 1. Use purified water. Heat it to between 180 and 200 degrees. 2. Swish some of the heated water through the teapot and discard. 3. Place 1 to 2 teaspoons of tea leaves in the tea pot. 4. Pour heated water into the tea pot and swirl two to three times in a horizontal circular motion to rinse the leaves of shreds. Pour the water out into a pitcher immediately. 5. Rinse all the tea cups with the remaining heated rinsing water. 6. Brew the first pot of tea by filling the pot entirely to the lid. Steep the leaves between 40 seconds to a

Page 5

minute. Strain the leaves using a filter and pitcher. Enjoy your health tea. * Try a new physical game or activity. Sign up with a team to play basketball or volleyball. Challenge a friend to a racquetball tournament. Or prepare yourself for a marathon. Whatever the event, make sure it is an activity you enjoy, and set a realistic goal to ensure you stay with the activity throughout the entire year. But most of all, see if you can't have a friend or family member join you in your resolution so you can hold each other accountable.

Easy Ways to Ensure a More Restful Night's Sleep Though many are aware it's one of life's necessities, a good night's sleep is still widely considered a luxury. Despite the knowledge that a good night's sleep is beneficial in many ways, affecting not only mood but physical health as well, it's still quite possibly the one necessity of life that people routinely sacrifice. Consider doing the same with other necessities, such as food and shelter, and the willingness of many people to forgo sufficient regular rest seems wholly irresponsible. Most people would not go a day or a week without eating, yet it's common to go a night or week or even longer without once getting a good night's rest. That reality is potentially very harmful, as sleep can influence productivity, memory, mood, and alertness. To ensure you're getting sufficient and beneficial rest, consider the following tips. * Keep a regular sleep schedule. Maintaining a regular bedtime and wakeup schedule

helps alert the body to when it's time to go to sleep and wake up. While it's common to abandon such a routine on weekends, it's best to avoid completely deviating from a weekly sleep schedule every Friday and Saturday night. For instance, those who routinely go to bed around 11 p.m. on weeknights should not be hitting the sack at sunrise each and every weekend. Keep as consistent a sleep schedule as possible, even on weekends. * Sleep when it's dark outside. Nap afficionados will heap praise on the value of a daily middday nap. However, napping during the daytime could be the equivalent of stealing from Peter to pay Paul. While a daytime nap might be the rejuvenating boost you need in the middle of the day, it could very well be that you're tired during the day because you didn't sleep well overnight after taking a mid-afternoon nap. * Make things as comfortable as possible. Some people need

January - March 2010

www.unionrecorder.com

absolute silence when sleeping, while others need to listen to music. Each individual is different, but creating a serene and soothing sleep environment can help ensure a quality night's rest. If necessary, use earplugs to block out any external noises. * Sleep on an adequate mattress. Sleeping problems often result from older mattresses that have worn out their welcome. Look for one that provides both comfort and support. Couples should also be sure their mattress is big enought to comfortably fit two people. * Keep eyes off the clock. It's probably a product of human nature, but many people, upon waking up in the middle of the night, quickly glance at the nearest clock. This should be avoided, as it often makes people start thinking about the sleep they're missing, indirectly making it more difficult to get back to sleep.

Page 7

* Get your exercise. Exercise is beneficial in many ways, not the least of which is promoting a better night's sleep. However, exercise also gets many people amped up, so it's best to finish an exercise several hours before bedtime to allow your heart rate to return to normal and your mind to calm down. * Stop eating and consuming caffeine several hours before bed. Eating shortly before bed can cause digestive problems, making it difficult to fall asleep or enjoy a good night's rest. It's also best to avoid caffeine and any other stimulants in the hours leading up to bedtime. * Make the bed simply a place to sleep. When you watch television from bed or work from bed, this can make it difficult to fall asleep in bed when it comes time to catch some Zzzzs. In general, it's best to reserve the bed solely for sleeping.

An active life begins with healthy joints (ARA) - The new year often means resolutions like being healthier or exercising more often. What many people don't know is that our joints are the critical part of the body that allows us to be active and do the activities we most enjoy. Approximately one-third of Americans 35 and older say their joints prevent them from doing their favorite sport or activity in the last year and more than 50 percent of them just accepted that as part of the aging process, according to a recent study. The good news is there are simple and effective steps you can take to strengthen and protect these "forgotten soldiers" - ensuring your joints a healthy kick-off to an active year. Dr. Kevin R. Stone, an orthopedic surgeon at the Stone Clinic and founder of the Stone Research Foundation and Joint Juice, a San Francisco-based joint health beverage company, offers five tips for helping to maintain healthy joints: 1. Manage your weight - You won't just look better - you'll feel better. Every extra pound puts four times the stress on your knees and other weight-bearing joints. Even a small amount of weight loss will give your joints relief.

2. Be supplement savvy Dietary supplements like glucosamine have been proven to help maintain joint function and mobility. Glucosamine is produced naturally in the body, but due to the physical demands of everyday life (let alone running, tennis or even walking), our body's supply is often not enough. Joint Juice beverages provide an easy way to drink your daily supply of glucosamine and avoid having to swallow two big horse pills a day. 3. Stretch - Stretching isn't just for workouts. Take breaks throughout the day, especially at the office, to get re-energized. Range-of-motion exercises are a good way to keep muscles and ligaments flexible and strong. 4. Use good technique - When sitting, standing and especially when lifting, using the proper technique will prevent fatigue and injury. Ask an expert if you don't know how to do it, but be sure to assess your technique for these simple daily activities. 5. Make a date with your doctor - See a physician for a routine check-up at least once a year. Request an examination of your joints - from head to toe - and ask for tips on protecting your joints from daily stress. Courtesy of ARAcontent

4. Sleep smarter! Too much sleep, or not enough of it, can kill you. A British study found that getting more than 9 hours of sack time a night, or less than 6, doubles your risk of an early death from any cause. Aim for 7 to 8 hours a night.

5. Pop in your lenses post-shower! Soaping up while wearing your contacts can expose your eyes to infection-causing waterborne microbes, say University of Illinois at Chicago researchers.

6. Drink wine, stay lean! Polyphenols, the compounds found in red wine, help your body block fat absorption, an Israeli study found. Red-wine marinades work, too.

Good Company, Good Talent

Great Care! With our help you’ll be up & running again...

Instead, give your chair the La-Z-Boy treatment and recline the seat back slightly. The ideal angle is 45 degrees off vertical.

8. Scent your air safely! Some air fresheners contain phthalates, compounds that may disrupt hormone processes, Natural Resources Defense Council testing reveals. Stick with Febreze Air Effects and Renuzit Subtle Effects.

9. Boost your defenses! An Archives of Internal Medicine review reports that 400 IU of vitamin D a day reduces your risk of an early death by 7 percent. Try Carlson's vitamin D (carlsonlabs.com).

Continued from page 3 scanning the menu at a quickservice restaurant? Controlling your diet means literally and figuratively controlling what you eat. By packing a lunch with proportioned servings, such as a sandwich made with lean protein, snacks like bagged pretzels, pretzel chips or veggie crisps and some fresh fruit, you can ensure a healthier meal and snack, and at the same time save on the extra expense of eating away from home. For variety - and fun mix it up with a variety of foods. Good for you and green Feel good about yourself and what you're doing for the planet by doing more with less. Use a non-disposable container to pack smaller portions of healthy snacks to contain calories, costs and waste. You can also take advantage of packaged products designed to be at once better for you, flavorful and eco-friendly. Snyder's of Hanover, for its part, recently introduced the markets first 100 percent compostable outer bags for its 22 count variety sacks of 100 calorie pretzels and 1 ounce pretzel sandwiches. Buddy system Teamwork can really mean the difference between sliding back or moving forward.

Page 31

Engage a friend, family member or even a large group of friends to help you in your goals to improve your diet and lifestyle. Compare shopping lists and diet tricks - all the better over a brisk walk or during an exercise class. Reward yourself If you make it to Groundhog Day on the way to your goal of eating better and feeling more fit, reward yourself with something that's both healthy and indulgent - and something you don't have to feel guilty about afterwards. Dip a whole-grain pretzel rod into some melted dark chocolate for some sweet and salty satisfaction, not to mention a dose of antioxidants (from the chocolate) and whole grains (from the pretzel). Roll the chocolate-covered pretzel in some crushed pistachios, which are rich in vitamins and minerals like copper, potassium, phosphorus and B6. Or top one scoop of reduced-sugar vanilla ice cream with a halfcup of crushed pretzels and a drizzle (not a drench) of caramel syrup; or top one scoop of dark chocolate ice cream with fresh blueberries and raspberries. Make the last day of every month a reward day, and that way, you'll be surprised that you're still focused on eating healthy when Memorial Day rolls around.
