Doable, sustainable advice for getting

healthier in 2011 The fat-laden, high-sugar, spirit-soaked roller coaster ride of the holidays will be over before you know it and many of us will head into 2011 resolving to take better care of our health in the New Year. Losing weight and improving fitness are two of the most common New Year's resolutions in America - year, after year, after year. It is possible, however, to make 2011 the last year you'll have to resolve to eat better and exercise more. Start by looking for trusted resources that can help you focus on changing habits and developing a healthier, yet still enjoyable, lifestyle. And learn the truth behind some common obstacles to sustained weight loss. Members of the Mayo Clinic staff, authors of The Mayo Clinic Diet, offer some advice for improving your healthy lifestyle in the New Year: • You may have heard of fad diets that have you counting carbohydrates, bulking up on pure protein or eating bushels of grapefruit. Weight loss comes down to burning more calories than you take in. Reduce extra calories from food and beverages, and increase calories burned through physical activity. • A sustainable weight loss plan should include food from all the major food groups, feature foods you can easily find at the grocery store, fit your lifestyle and budget, include proper amounts of nutrients and calories and encourage regular physical activity. The Mayo Clinic Diet starts off with a two-week focus on breaking unhealthy habits and adding healthy habits. • Being active is an essential part of a weightloss plan. Cleaning the house, making the bed, shopping, mowing the lawn and gardening are all forms of physical activity. Exercise is a structured and repetitive form of physical activity that you do on a regular basis. Aim for 30 to 60 minutes of moderately intense physical activity or exercise most days of the week. • Learn to make healthy food choices you can live with. The Mayo Clinic Diet relies on the Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight Pyramid, which guides you toward a general direction of smart eating. The base of the pyramid focuses on generous amounts of healthy foods that contain fewer calories in a large volume of food, like fruits and vegetables. As you progress toward the peak of the pyramid, you eat lesser portions of categories like whole grains, lean protein, dairy, healthy fats and even sweets.

• Resolve to manage stress in the New Year. While stress is a normal reaction to life's demands, the nonstop stress of modern life can be harmful to your health. Relaxation techniques such as meditating, visualization, exercise, hypnosis, massage and listening to music can all help manage stress. • To help keep yourself on track with your healthy lifestyle in 2011, be sure to set goals. Make exercise fun by choosing sports and activities you enjoy. Incorporate physical activity into your daily routine. Seek support from friends and family, and reward yourself for meeting goals. • Every weight loss plan faces challenges. Learn what yours are and how you can cope with them. The Mayo Clinic Diet provides an action guide that lists a number of challenges and recommends ways to cope with them. "Many patients I see have tried several diets in an attempt to lose weight, yet the weight keeps coming back," says Dr. Donald Hensrud, a Mayo Clinic specialist in preventive and internal medicine, and medical editor-in-chief of the book. "The key to weight loss is to eat well and obtain regular physical activity. Our goal with this book is to give people real tools for doing that." You'll find more information on living a healthier lifestyle in 2011 at www.MayoClinic.com.

Sure, you sometimes have to ask people to repeat themselves, and the volume knob on the car stereo is set much farther to the right than it used to be. But you can't be experiencing hearing loss - you're not a senior citizen. Hearing loss only affects the old, right? Not necessarily. "Only 40 percent of people with hearing loss are older than 64," says Dr. Sergei Kochkin, executive director of the Better Hearing Institute in Washington, D.C. "The largest age group with hearing loss is people between 18 and 64 - about 19 million people compared to 14 million at retirement age. More than 1 million school-age children have hearing problems, as well." The idea that hearing loss only happens to the aged - and is an unavoidable circumstance of aging - is just one of many commonly believed myths about the issue. The truth is that hearing loss affects all age groups. If you want to avoid hearing loss, it pays to know the truth behind the myths and the basics of hearing loss prevention. Here are some common myths about hearing loss, and the truth behind the myths: Myth: If I had hearing loss, my family doctor would have told me. Truth: Only 15 percent of doctors routinely screen for hearing loss during a physical exam. Even when a doctor does screen for hearing problems, the results may be suspect since most people with hearing problems hear pretty well in quiet environments - like a doctor's office. Without special training on hearing loss, it may be difficult for your family doctor to even realize you have a hearing problem. Myth: Nothing can be done about my hearing loss. Truth: People with hearing loss in one ear, with a high-frequency hearing loss, or with nerve damage may have been told by their family doctor that nothing can be done to help. Modern technology has changed that. Now, nearly 95 percent of people with hearing loss can be helped, most with hearing aids. Myth: Only people with serious hearing loss need hearing aids. Truth: Your lifestyle, your need for refined hearing and the degree of your hearing loss will determine whether you need a hearing aid. If you're in a profession that relies on your ability to discern the nuances

of human conversation - such as a lawyer, teacher or group psychotherapist - even mild hearing loss can interfere with your life. Myth: Hearing aids are big and ugly. Wearing one will make me look old or disabled. Truth: Untreated hearing loss is far more noticeable than today's hearing aids. If you miss the punch line of a joke, or respond inappropriately to a comment or question, people may wonder about your mental capacity. Hearing aid makers realize people are concerned about how they will look wearing a hearing aid. Today, you can find miniature hearing aids that fit totally within the ear canal or behind your ear, making them virtually invisible. Myth: Hearing loss is an inevitable part of growing older and there's nothing I can do to prevent it from happening to me. Truth: You can take steps to prevent hearing loss. Noise is one of the most common causes of hearing loss; 10 million Americans have already suffered irreversible damage to their hearing from noise. Yet a third of all hearing loss could be prevented with proper ear protection. Myth: I cannot afford hearing aids Truth: There is a wide price range in hearing aids on the market just like there is for other consumer products. In addition the BHI has identified close to 100 sources for financial help in their eGuide "Your Guide to Financial Assistance with Hearing Aids." If you work in a high-risk profession, make sure your hearing is protected according to OSHA regulations, and wear hearing protection such as foam or silicone plugs or earmuffs. At home, lower the volume on the TV, radio, stereo and any device that uses earbuds or headphones. Wear ear protection while mowing the lawn or blowing leaves or snow. Buy quieter products (compare decibel ratings) and reduce the number of noisy appliances running at the same time in your home. Before taking a new medicine, be sure to ask the doctor about any possible side effects on your hearing. To learn more about hearing loss, treatment for hearing loss and hearing loss prevention, visit the Better Hearing Institute online at www.BetterHearing.org. Or take the BHI's online hearing test at www.hearingcheck.org.

It's empowering to know that there are small changes you can make in your own life that can also have positive effects on everyone else's life. But did you know that many of the same things you personally do to live a healthier lifestyle, can also positively impact the environment? In fact, improving your own waistline and reducing your personal waste are connected in more ways than you've probably thought about. Here are four changes you can make to your everyday life that will also make a positive impact on your health and the earth: • Eat local, organic foods. By making sure that you are purchasing locally grown, organic foods, you are also reducing the amount of energy it takes to transport the food to your area. When you eat locally, it means that the food has to travel a much shorter distance to make it onto your plate, therefore reducing its impact on the environment. It also allows you to know that you are eating some of the freshest produce available to you, which are packed with vitamins you need to improve your health. • Drink more water, but ditch the disposable plastic bottle. We often mistake thirst for hunger, so grabbing some water might quench both a craving and your thirst. Water is a far better choice than calorie-ridden sugary beverages. By carrying a reusable container, like a Brita FilterForGood Nalgene bottle with you instead of single-use plastic water bottles, you'll do your part in reducing plastic waste. "If everyone in the United States pledged to give up bottled water for just one month it could save more than 5 billion bottles," says Josh Dorfman, environmental activist, TV host and author of "The Lazy Environmentalist on a Budget: Save Money. Save Time. Save the Planet." • Eat more fruits and vegetables. The health benefits of increasing the amount of vegetables in your diet are well-documented, as vegetables are a low-fat, low-calorie source of essential nutrients. But did you

Page 5

know that when you eat less meat and more vegetables, you're also reducing your carbon footprint? According to a 2008 Economic Information Bulletin from the USDA, the food market produces hundreds of pounds of meat each year per American to meet demand - an amount that has not been good for our nation's waistlines. The production of meat uses many more resources than fruits and veggies, which is why Dorfman recommends going meatless at least one day a week. For a fun and healthy way to learn more about how your food is sourced, ride a bike or jog over to a local farmer market. • Power of the pedal, or your feet. On your way to becoming healthier, you're sure to include exercise in your plan. Sometimes though, exercising can have a greater purpose than just working your muscles and improving cardiovascular health. Consider including daily chores into your workout plan, as it will help you fit in your workout while also leaving your car on the curb. Bike or walk to the grocery store to do your weekly shopping.

If you decide to take up the quest to improve both the health of yourself and the planet, you're not alone. Contestants on NBC's "The Biggest Loser" are also learning about ways they can help the environment while losing weight this season. Tune into the show and take the FilterForGood Pledge at www.filterforgood.com to learn more and get involved.

The condition that no one's talking about what all men with diabetes need to know

The abundance of treats during the holidays can make it a challenge for men to watch their waistlines and stay consistent with their diets, which can be especially dangerous for men with diabetes. That is why the holiday season is an important time for these men to get informed about the other health issues that can come with their disease. According to data from the American Diabetes Association, approximately 12 million men in the United States have diabetes, and many of these men do not realize that they may be at risk for other serious conditions. Research has shown that men suffering from diabetes may be at increased risk for a condition called hypogonadism, more commonly known as low testosterone. This is because men with diabetes have lower levels of testosterone than those without diabetes. Hypogonadism affects up to 4 million men in the U.S., most of whom remain untreated because its signs and

symptoms are often attributed to normal aging. These men may experience symptoms such as sexual dysfunction, decreased sexual desire, decreased muscle mass, loss of body hair, low sperm count, and decreased bone mineral density. "Studies have shown that men with diabetes are twice as likely to have low testosterone as men without diabetes," says Dr. Helena Rodbard, past-president of the American College of Endocrinology (ACE), and past-president of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE). "It is vitally important for men with diabetes to visit their doctors to discuss the condition and potential risk factors." The holiday season is an important time for men with diabetes to take charge of their health. For more information about low testosterone and a medical condition known as hypogonadism, visit www.IsItLowT.com.

Natural gas has become a major source of fuel in the United States today, in part because of a controversial drilling practice that is earning a great deal of attention in the news: hydraulic fracturing, better know as "fracking." But as fracking has expanded, so too have concerns about its potential impact on American's clean drinking water supplies. Hydraulic fracturing is used in about 90 percent of U.S. natural gas and oil wells. During fracking, pressurized and chemically treated water is used to fragment shale rock to get to natural gas. This process can threaten water quality if the fracking fluids leak into groundwater or are spilled in their handling above ground. Because fracking is currently exempt from federal regulation under the Safe

Drinking Water Act, drillers do not have to disclose what is contained in their fracking fluids. But several of the chemicals known to be concentrated from the underground gas wells during the fracking process are considered toxic, such as benzene and methane, and are known to cause health issues when exposure is too high. Colorado, Pennsylvania, Wyoming and Texas are just some of the states where fracking has been linked to contaminated water and illnesses. In the midst of continuing public debate over how to manage and regulate an important natural resource while protecting the safety of water supplies, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has announced plans to release a study in 2012 on the impact of fracking

Page 7

on drinking water. "While there are still many questions about the problems created by fracking, it is so important to not take your water quality for granted," says Jerome Kovach, vice president of research and development at Kinetico, a leading manufacturer of water treatment products. "The national news on this issue should serve as a reminder for homeowners to know if their water is clean and safe - and if there are questions, to get it tested." Many pollutants from gas drilling have obvious odors and tastes, but Kovach says many contaminants don't have such clear indicators. He encourages homeowners to be vigilant in making sure their drinking water is safe for their family. Many local water treatment professionals, like those who represent Kinetico, offer basic in-home testing for free. Their basic water analyses include testing for hardness, chlorine, total dissolved solids, iron and measuring the pH value. Expanded water tests should look for chemicals associated with fracking, such as benzene, methane, barium and chloride. For this greater level of detail on the water's quality, dealers can collect samples for a more in-depth water analysis conducted by a third-party laboratory. "Homeowners who are close to natural gas drilling and who are wary about what could be in their water should get their water tested immediately," says Kovach. "They'll be able to rest easier when they know all is well or can take steps to improve the quality of their water." After testing, if problems are present, Kovach recommends looking for a water treatment system that has been certified to an ANSI/NSF standard by an ANSI approved laboratory. These certified thirdparty laboratories rigorously test products and audit production facilities to ensure products perform as claimed. To learn more or to arrange a free inhome water quality analysis, visit www.kinetico.com or call (800) 944-9283.

Tips on taking the best care of your mouth You eat with it, you communicate with it, you even show your undying affection with it - so why not take care of it? Consider these oral care tips from New York-based Dentist, John E. Dodes.

Listerine Zero, there are no excuses not to rinse. This less intense, alcohol free mouthwash cleans deep by killing more bad breath germs than just brushing alone, for a cleaner, fresher mouth.

Some love that powerful sensation of Listerine Antiseptic, but others don't rinse away bad breath germs because they're not crazy about the intensity. With new

Technique matters There's a proper way to brush and floss. If you're unfamiliar with the correct technique, ask your dentist for help. You can also visit the American Dental Association's website to watch some great tutorials on proper technique.
