this is a movie desperate to live up to the standard (and to commingle the plot lines) of more brilliant films like “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” the cult classic, “Goonies,” and the far superior “Super 8.” While the attempt was made, the execution was depressingly sluggish. It could have been so much more.

spotlightDeep Roots Festival music and why you S must be there!

Charter TV is in in the midst of a rebuild, which is affecting some channels that will be moved. As channels are moved, the TV listings will update throughout the rebuild. We appreciate your patience.

The performances at Deep Roots are special due to the energy and enthusiasm our audiences have developed over the years. Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Delta Spirit, GIVERS and Allen Stone are just a few bands that have publicly commented on the surprising and abundant vitality they experienced during their shows here. What was once untraveled territory for nationally touring musicians, Deep Roots Festival is now a premium venue with AList artists and this year is no exception.

Heartless Bastards

T

he 2014 headliner, Heartless Bastards, make their way from Austin, Texas touring on their fourth album, “Arrow,” produced by Spoon drummer, Jim Eno. While Rolling Stone magazine positions the quartet alongside “The Black Keys as front-line blues-rock modernists,” existing fans might get lost in attempting to describe Heartless Bastards’ music. Spaghetti western film scores, seventies soul, psychedelia, funk, blues, glam, and mudhole-stomping hard rock are all appropriate descriptions, but they don’t capture the unique and raw essence lead singer, Erika Wennerstrom delivers song after song. Make no mistake, the entire band, made up of Jesse Ebaugh (bass), Dave Colvin (drums) and Mark Nathan (guitar), is stellar at crafting tight compositions, but it is Erika who takes their excellent executed crafts and elevates them with star power. While many female bandleaders may intentionally tend to soften or beautify a collection of songs, Erika isn’t afraid to get dirty. Her voice is soulful and elegant while also desperate and primal, it’s something to see and hear. And as for the name, Heartless Bastards, the band has a sense of humor. When initially piecing the

band together, Erika was playing a video trivia game that asked the name of Tom Petty’s band. While we all know The Heartbreakers is the answer, one of the multiple-choice options was The Heartless Bastards. Rock humor, dig it. Performance Standouts - Austin City Limits, SXSW, Bunbury, Hang Out Festival, Lowlands, Firefly, Bonnaroo, Jimmy Kimmel Live, David Letterman, Conan and more. DRF 14 Homework – Visit www.TheHeartlessBastards.com and check out the videos “Only For You” and “Parted Ways.” While you’re there, download the mp3 album sampler and jam out to “Simple Feeling.” Then prepare yourself to be blown away on Saturday, Oct. 18.

Little Hurricane

here is a lot to be said about this female/male duo from San Diego, but first we must congratulate them. After confirming their supporting slot at Deep Roots Festival, Little Hurricane took top honors with Album of the Year at the San Diego Music Awards for their 2014 release, “Gold Fever.” They received this same recognition in 2011 for their freshman effort, “Homewrecker.” Consisting of front man Anthony "Tone" Catalano and drummer Celeste "C.C." Spina. Their influences include Van Morrison, Dead Weather, Gorillaz, James Taylor, Paul Simon and The Beatles, but their music offers a uniqueness not produced by any of their mentors. With only two people in the band, Little Hurricane will surprise you with what Rolling Stone called a ”fearless big sound.” On Friday, Oct. 17, the evening before their performance at Deep Roots Festival, Little Hurricane will be in NYC performing at Rachel Ray’s coveted Feedback House. As we watch their popularity grow, don’t miss their electrifying at Deep Roots Festival.

Family and Friends

A

nother great band travelling from just up the road in Athens, Family and Friends have continued to grow in popularity and talent since our announcement in late August.

This band of seven musicians was recently awarded Artist of the Year and Best Upstart Band of 2014 by the Flagpole Athens Music Awards. In July, they were TheBlueIndian.com Artist of the Month. Yet, the band isn’t about winning awards, they’re about the pure expression of heart, mind and soul through live music. Allotted the sunset performance at Deep Roots Festival, Family and Friends will be a performance talked about for years to come. DRF14 Homework: Visit familyandfriends.bandcamp.com and stream their EP, “Love You, Mean It” for free! Once you’re hooked, check out the awesome 35-minute AudioTree session at http://audiotree.tv/ session/family-and-friends.

Also enjoy www.FamilyAndFriends Band.com and look at their photos. Everyone of them seem to exude beams of love happiness.

The Norm

S

tepbrothers, Bryan Rucker and Ryan Bars, began playing music together in their mom's garage in

2010. While the dynamics of a blended family can have its challenges, Rucker and Bars are showing the world its profound possibilities. Individually, they stand strong enough in their solo careers, but together they deliver a unique union of pop-rock and hip-hop with an accessibility that one wouldn’t typically find in either genre. When your influences are The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Bee Gees and Dr. Dre, what can one expect except 100 percent awesomeness. Then, consider The Norm has added some of Milledgeville’s and Deep Roots’ most elite musicians, including guitarist Brandon Marsolo (The Greenway, The Eclective), bassist Alex Pound (Elastic Skyline, Thoughtomatic), saxophonist TJ Brown

(Bomb Chewey, The Eclective) and crazy-talented drummer Jon Joiner (Stokeswood, Bomb Chewey, The Eclective, Moonshine Still). With this line-up you are guaranteed an endless, high-octane display of catchy hooks, infectious beats and familial love. The Norm will be recording footage at Deep Roots for their up-and-coming music videos of select songs. Be sure to be there and dance your butt off! DRF14 Homework: Visit https://soundcloud.com/thenormmusic and dig in to their new EP, “Everyday People” streaming for free. Then head over to iTunes and buy it for your permanent collection. Also, check out their Facebook page, www.facebook.com/TheNormMusic

and watch their installation documentary, “Road to Deep Roots.”

Julie Overvold & Familiar

J

ulie has been gracing numerous intimate venues in Milledgeville with her solo work for the past

few years, while wowing large audiences by appearing with The Greenway, The Eclective, Thoughtomatic and more. For Deep Roots 2014, she’s been charged to come front-and-center and put her continuing stamp on Milledgeville music history. With steadfast focus and a sense of humor, Julie tapped Dusty McCook (Freelance Ruckus) to assist her, or to be her Familiar. According to folklore, familiars are supernatural entities thought to assist witches with magic and Dusty fits the bill. Guitar is his magic wand and with his

touch it often leaves many in openmouth awe. While Julie is no witch, her voice does have mythological powers to possess with complexity and spirituality, which is why she and her band are the first in Deep Roots history to have two sets on the same day. Don’t miss either!

ave you read the novel “Gone Girl,” the global best-seller by Gillian Flynn, adopted and beloved by an infinitude of book clubs, primarily populated by the distaff gender? If so, you have most certainly seen “Gone Girl” the movie by the time this review hits the printed page. If not, read on! It is a comfort that the author wrote the screenplay preventing a molestation of the author’s creation. David Fincher directed the film and his unique style (“Fight Club,” “Panic Room,” and “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”) matches quite snugly the novel … or so I am told by my Director of Primary Research for Novels Transformed to Cinema. It would be unfair for me to spoil the fun by describing too much but let me go so far as to tell you that this is about a marriage about

to unravel in a most dramatic way. The husband, Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) and wife Amy Dunne (Rosemont Pike) met in New York where they had a lovely romance. Then Nick’s mom got sick and he felt a need to come home (with wife) to small town Missouri, which, apparently, is a rural-suburban hell for these two sophisticates. Amy is the daughter of the authors of a children’s book series called “Amazing Amy,” loosely based on her childhood. This made her famous and rich. Nick is a corn-fed Missouri boy of workingclass upbringing with dreams of being a great writer. His mother dies and they remain in Missouri. He and his sister open a bar (for the working class Missourians) and their relationship stagnates. Eventually the marriage begins to decay. And then Amy disappears and the media circus begins. Evidence mounts indicating a murder. Secrets and lies are revealed. Nick looks guilty. But all that appears to be true is not. Who knows what evil lurks behind the McMansion doors? Stuff happens … and then Nick’s lawyer (Tyler Perry — as I live and

breathe!) announces to the Media Mob that nothing less than a “Miracle on the Mississippi” has occurred. Or is it a miracle? Or could it be something very sick and sinister? (Bet on it.) Imagine if “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf” didn’t last long enough to grow into an acrimonious daily ritual of bitter recriminations and verbal rage. Think if the dial were turned up way beyond the artful exchange of snipping and snarling by the fifth anniversary. That is “Gone Girl.” Rosamund Pike is chilling; Ben Affleck is pitchperfect. Amy is an amoral narcissist; Nick is a selfabsorbed reprobate. The chemistry between the Det. Rhonda Boney (Kim Dickens) and Officer Jim Gilpen (Patrick Fugit) display a flawless ballet of See

pipeline Solving a Messing mystery: She’s made movies Q: It’s good to see Debra Messing back on television in “The Mysteries of Laura.” Has she ever made any movies? — Connie Sloan, Providence, R.I. A: She has. Early in her career, she appeared with Keanu Reeves in “A Walk in the Clouds” ... and pre-“Will & Grace,” she also was featured in a big-screen update of TV’s “McHale’s Navy.” Her success with the weekly role of Grace brought her more movie opportunities including “Along

Came Polly,” “The Mothman Prophecies” and (in voice only) “Garfield” and “Open Season.” After having a starring vehicle with “The Wedding Date” — in which her marr ying half-sister was played by the lower-billed Amy Adams — Messing also turned up in “Nothing Like the Holidays” and a remake of the 1939 classic “The Women.” Q: Can you tell us what happened to Maria Menounos,

who was Mario Lopez’s co-host on “Extra”? — Jo Zenosky, Buffalo, N.Y. A: She left that program several months ago and joined E! Entertainment Television, where she’s now seen on “Live From E!” several nights each week and has a recurring series of her own, “Untold With Maria Menounos.” The wonderfully lively (trust us, we know firsthand) “Dancing With the Stars” alum also has a production company, and E! has a first-look

deal with her for programs she makes through that avenue. Q: What’s the story with “Tyrant”? Is it being renewed for a second season? — Nancy Beja, Columbus, Ohio A: The story is yes, the FX drama has been renewed for another 13 episodes slated to start running next summer. While first-season reviews for the series were mixed, it definitely hasn’t hurt that the executive producer and

showrunner is Howard Gordon, whose track record is evident from the titles “The X-Files,” “24” and “Homeland.” His new deal with 20th Century Fox Television — the studio behind “Tyrant” — likely helped the show’s renewal, too. And indeed that is where it was filmed. I picked up on that given that I was once a corn-fed Missouri boy with at least one family member who spent more than a few years in the aforemen-

tioned town. Funny thing: the Cape Girardeau accent, I mean the real hometown accent has a strong resemblance to the Huntsville, Ala. twang of actress Ms. Dickens. I mention this since I have kinfolk who read my column and I am invoking personal privilege … and I don’t need to be told I have forgotten all that simply because I have lived in self-exile from the Show Me State for a lifetime. I commend to you “Gone Girl.” I enjoyed it even if I

saw the end coming all the way from the first (winkwink) reveal. I know there are more than a few “implausibles” contained in the film, but I gladly put them out of my mind to see the fascinating evil interplay of the human mind (or minds) and the natural and common desire for “spousicide” play out beyond the simple exploration of same in one’s imagination. Go now to “Gone Girl.” I grant four bow ties out of five to “Gone Girl.”
