t may seem odd for some people to hear the words “Get fit, have fun, make friends” all in the same sentence; however, at Bodyplex Lake Oconee, that is exactly what you will find folks doing every weekday from 10:30-11:30. Thanks to a wonderful program called Silver Sneakers provided by the company Healthways, seniors around the Lake Country are utilizing their FREE gym membership to increase their quality of life and well-being. Offering classes designed with senior citizens in mind that are varying in style and degree of difficulty, the Healthways Silver Sneakers fitness program is the wave of the future in preventative “medicine”. Healthways Silver Sneakers provides free gym memberships to medicare eligible individuals by cooperating with supplemental insurance companies nationwide. The membership provided at Bodyplex Lake Oconee is an all inclusive membership that includes unlimited group fitness classes, as well as a first time orientation with a qualified instructor. This first time orientation includes a health assessment and an introduction to working out on the equipment in the facility. Every instructor at Bodyplex Lake Oconee is certified for their specialized class as well as CPR certified, which leads to a more knowledgeable and relaxed atmosphere when working out. Bodyplex offers a wide range of the Healthways Silver Sneakers classes, and really does have something for everyone and every fitness level. The Muscular Strength and Range of Motion, or MSROM, class is an introductory class that focuses on improving balance, flexibility and overall strength. Using a variety of resistance tools, the instructor guides the members step by step through exercises that are related to every day activities and will help to maintain one’s independence. The Silver Sneakers Yoga Stretch class is more focused on main6

taining joint flexibility. The yoga stretch class offers gentle yet effective stretches, in a calm and relaxing environment, without having to get down on the floor, which is common with traditional yoga. Silver Sneakers Cardio Fit is a class designed to improve one’s overall tone and body condition, as well as strengthen the heart. Low impact cardiovascular exercises which are combined with strength training and functional stretching make this class an absolute must for anyone wanting to improve their cardiovascular health. The Silver Sneakers participants at Bodyplex Lake Oconee get fit by participating in the various classes that are designed and taught with them in mind all while they have fun and make friends. Occasional Silver Sneakers luncheons, contests, and celebrations

help this dedicated group to keep the fun in fitness and in keeping their independence. Sarah Clark, a member of the Silver Sneaker Fitness program at Bodyplex, has seen dramatic improvements due to her dedication to participating. When asked how the Silver Sneakers program has helped her reach her personal and health related goals, Sarah responded “I have maintained and stabilized my blood pressure and increased my muscle strength. I have also increased my energy level, decreased my joint pain, and lost 40 pounds! My favorite part of the program is working out, the conversations with other members and the friendliness of the staff.” What would Sarah say to someone who is considering trying the Silver Sneakers? “I would advise them to try it, they will see that it is beneficial in many areas.”

ssisted living is an alternative living arrangement available for seniors who, because of health and/or safety issues, choose assistance in a supervised setting. The resident lives independently while benefiting from support services. The services promote dignity and continued independence. Residents may have private accommodations, the luxury of considerable communal space for socialization and recreation and the safety of a secure environment. Amenities include 24 hour staffing, assistance with bathing, dressing and grooming, management of medications and provision of three meals per day. Other services may include snacks, housekeeping, laundry services, transportation and social, recreational and cultural activities. The number and scope of services may be dependent on the size of the facility selected. Specialized assisted living may be available for memory impaired residents in some facilities. Assisted living is a residential product determined by choice, whereas a skilled nursing home is need driven. The skilled nursing facility is generally cov-

ered by Medicare and supplemental insurance products, while assisted living is a private pay product. If short-term medical care is needed in an assisted living community, home health agencies can provide that care with a physician’s order and it will be covered by Medicare and/or insurance. If extensive medical care is needed, a hospital, rehabilitation center or skilled nursing home will be desirable. Flexibility and continuity of care are essential to seniors and their adult children. Communities that offer a variety of care options are ideal. Options may include adult daycare, respite care for overnight or weekends, and short/long-term accommodations and memory care. Assisted living is a healthy and enriching option for seniors needing discreet supervision and assistance. Veteran benefits, long term care insurance and personal funds are most commonly used to pay for care and service.
