Holiday Reflections...

Holiday Reflections. It’s so much more than the name of our beloved, seasonal celebration. It’s an expression of our passion for this place that’s helped create millions of family stories and memories. Union Station.

Here, for more than 110 years, people have gathered for some of their most meaningful moments. To celebrate, commemorate, and capture the powerful presence and deep nostalgia that lives in our expansive marble halls and smaller, more intimate spaces.

And during the holiday season, those moments at Union Station crescendo for families from every corner of our community and beyond. In fact, it’s not unusual for us to hear from guests how they cherish their annual holiday visits to Kansas City’s visual voice to reconnect with their favorite memories again and again.

From a family photo around our magnificent Grand Hall holiday tree, to an afternoon or pure delight watching Polar Express in PJ’s, to little faces pressed close to marvel at our magical model trains, to the more recent addition of Kansas City’s largest indoor holiday experience, Holiday Reflections . . .

These are moments we feel absolutely privileged to provide. And for each corresponding warm smile and big embrace that comes from our hard work, the payback is profound.

Over 20,000 annual hours goes into planning, constructing, and staffing Union Station’s brilliant holiday offerings. And beyond the countable hours, we invest our hearts into creating a place you can be proud of as you bring family and friends.

Additionally, the financial support we receive from our community partners ensures our holiday destinations are either free or made most affordable for as many families as possible. This year, we owe a deep appreciation to BOK Financial, CPKC, The City of Kansas City, Missouri Neighborhood Tourist Development Fund (NTDF), Russell Stover Chocolates, PGAV and Ford Motor Company for their generosity in bringing you a glorious 5th edition of Holiday Reflections. And while you’re here during this magical season of festivities, be sure to partake in all the experiences that are uniquely Union Station . . .

that invites you to relive favorite childhood memories and learn about the dreams that manifested into some of the most beloved characters, movies, and places in the world. This rare opportunity must close on January 5th, so make plans and secure your tickets today!

• SCIENCE CITY AND OUR ARVIN GOTTLIEB PLANETARIUM –both celebrating 25 award-winning years of challenging and delighting explorers of every age. With continually refreshed experiences and hands-on fun, both Kansas City treasures are open daily throughout the holiday season to inject adventure into your favorite family outings.

• REGNIER EXTREME SCREEN THEATRE – the region’s largest movie screen, combined with state-of-the-art technology, to bring you Holiday Classics, exciting First Run Movies, and fascinating morning documentaries. For the fifth consecutive year, the wildly popular indoor holiday walk-thru village, “Holiday Reflections” -- presented by BOK Financial and supported by CPKC, Russell Stover Chocolates, Ford Motor Company, PGAV and The City of Kansas City, Missouri Neighborhood Tourist Development Fund-- will take place in Union

Station’s Grand Plaza November 22nd through January 1st. Filling 27,000 sq. ft., the magical experience (with all tickets only $10*) features spectacular sights and sounds of the season: sky-reaching lights, whimsical trees, thousands of sparkling crystals, historic Kansas City holiday streetscapes and more. Primed with anticipation, this Holiday season will be the Station’s biggest and brightest yet.

“With spectacular new additions – including a walk along historic Downtown’s Petticoat Lane – guests of every age will be delighted,” said George Guastello, Union Station president and CEO. “We have even recreated the massive and iconic crowns that once hung above nine Downtown intersections and welcomed shoppers to the heart of Kansas City for the holidays. Everywhere you turn will be a festive feast for your senses. Plus, all proceeds from this magical season stay right here and help preserve and protect our historic and beloved Union Station. That is a passion and privilege we intend to honor for many generations to come.”

Union Station is a privately owned 501(c)(3) non-profit that depends on ticket sales and donations, as we receive no Federal, State, or Local support for ongoing operations. This community backing is vital for maintaining traditions like Holiday Reflections and keeping our 15-acre campus vibrant. Your contributions help create a magical holiday atmosphere, allowing families to celebrate cherished traditions and make lasting memories together.

POLAR EXPRESS

(in your PJ's)

Wrestling with burgeoning doubts on the ever-present question over Santa Claus' existence, a skeptical youngster hears the familiar sound of a locomotive which interrupts his already troubled sleep. And then, much to his surprise, a conductor invites him to board the magnificent Polar Express on an unforgettable and magical adventure all the way up to the frozen landscapes of the vast North Pole, Santa Claus' realm. Will he and the rest of the young non-believers aboard the train finally find the true spirit of Christmas?

2024 was a big year for the Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium. 160 new chairs, 2 new shows, an upgrade to our cutting-edge software, and one BIG 25th anniversary celebration. Who would have guessed on November 10, 1999, when the planetarium first opened, that 25 years later it would still be finding ways to grow and evolve?

Although there have been some changes over the last 25 years, a few constants have always remained true: a priority on cutting edge technology, pushing the boundaries of what it means to be an immersive theater and continuing to educate the community. All of this can be seen in the umbrella of events and programming that fall under the Planetarium: countless live telescope viewings, weddings, solar eclipse watch parties, live seasonal star tours, laser shows, live performances with community partners, educational films, and realtime scientific data sets from NASA that allow our educational team to provide current cosmos updates to the public as they happen in real-time.

“Some of my favorite moments and experiences over the years have been when we've gotten the chance to collaborate with other local creatives and performers, like when we created the first-ever live puppet show in a planetarium with "The Little Prince" and What If Puppets (formerly Mesner Puppet Theater), or just this year when we partnered with the vocal ensemble KC VITAs to produce an immersive concert experience with completely live and original 3D visuals.,” said Patrick Hess, Planetarium Manager at Union Station

All of that culminated in a celebration on November 1st and 2nd this year when the Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium, in collaboration with Digital Dreams KC, brought a collection of new, never-beforedone programming to the dome. All the events were made possible because of a big upgrade this year, the purchase and installation of

160 new lightweight, easily adjustable chairs. While the old chairs were bolted to the floor, these new chairs can be moved, rearranged, and even removed if the situation calls for it.

But all these changes don’t mean that family favorites are gone! This holiday season features the return of two classic shows: Holiday Laser Magic and Stars of Faith. Laser Holiday Magic gathers a selection of your favorite holiday tunes and brings them to life with gorgeous laser choreography. Vibrant animations and gorgeous abstracts dance above your heads, as the music takes you away from the hustle and bustle. Stars of Faith is a special edition of Sky Station LIVE featuring holiday stars and traditions from around the world. In addition to learning about the stars, planets, and constellations that fill our night sky, guests will also learn about the many ways in which faith connects with the night sky.

“One of the things I am most proud of for my time at the planetarium, is introducing our live holiday show "Stars of Faith," Hess said. “It's so special to bring people of all faiths into the planetarium to celebrate the wonder and beauty of humankind’s shared reverence for the cosmos.”

Planetarium upgrades were made possible by The Arvin Gottlieb Foundation and the Hulston Family Foundation.

U NION S TATION

Disney100: The Exhibition—presented in Kansas City by Bank of America— opened in Union Station Kansas City’s Bank of America Gallery in May 2024. Since then, more than 115,000 guests from near and far have experienced hundreds of treasures from the collections of The Walt Disney Company.

As you might know, Walt Disney’s roots in Kansas City run deep. In fact, there are few significant Kansas City organizations that Walt did not touch during his early “K.C.” years. As a young boy, he delivered newspapers on his father’s paper route and took Saturday drawing classes at the Kansas City Art Institute. He frequented the Kansas City Public Library, where he checked out books on animation. He walked the marble floors and halls of Union Station, often arriving and departing by train. It is here, in Kansas City, where his budding career as an entrepreneur began—where he met Ub Iwerks and created and marketed some of his first original animated cartoons. And it is here in our hometown where he honed his storytelling skills and applied his creative passion in a professional sense.

A MAN AND A MOUSE

Walt was born in Chicago, Illinois, on December 5, 1901. His father, Elias Disney, was Irish Canadian and his mother, Flora Call Disney, was of German American descent. Walt was one of five children, four boys and a girl.

Raised on a farm in Marceline, Missouri, Walt became interested in drawing from an early age. His talent for drawing and love of nature and animals became a touchstone for the rest of his life.

The Disney family would leave Marceline and move to Kansas City, Missouri, in 1911. Here, young Walter would rise at 3:30 in the morning to deliver The Kansas City Star newspapers on his father’s paper route. He attended Saturday drawing classes at the Kansas City Art Institute, and at fifteen, he worked on the railroad selling magazines and peanuts. During his time in Kansas City, Walt discovered and fell in love with animation.

In 1918, Walt attempted to enlist for military service. Rejected because he was only 16 years of age, Walt eventually joined the Red

Cross and was sent overseas, where he spent most of a year driving an ambulance and chauffeuring Red Cross officials. His ambulance was usually covered with drawings and cartoons. Walt’s creativity was evident in everything he touched.

In 1919, Walt returned to Kansas City and began pursuing his dreams. He began his career as an advertising cartoonist, and in 1920, he created and marketed his first original animated cartoons, later conceiving a new method for combining live-action and animation. Before leaving Kansas City for Hollywood in the summer of 1923, Walt made a “pilot” film with four-year-old Virginia Davis as Alice who, with the magic of animation, stepped into a cartoon world.

Heading west, Walt had but a few drawing materials, $40 in his pocket, and his animated and live-action pilot film, Alice’s Wonderland. Walt’s older brother Roy O. Disney was already in California with an immense amount of sympathy and encouragement, and $250. Pooling their resources, they borrowed an additional $500 and constructed a camera stand in their uncle’s garage. Soon, they received an order from a distributor in New York for the first “Alice Comedy” short films, which propelled the brothers into their production operation in the rear of a Hollywood real estate office.

Five years later, in 1928, Mickey Mouse changed the world. Mickey made his on-screen debut in Steamboat Willie, the world’s first fully synchronized sound cartoon. And as the saying goes, “the rest is history.”

During Walt’s 43-year Hollywood career, which spanned the development of the motion picture medium as a modern American art, Walter Elias Disney, a modern Aesop, established himself and his product as a genuine part of Americana. A pioneer and innovator, and the possessor of one of the most creative imaginations the world has known, Walt, along with his team, received more than 950 honors and citations throughout the world, including 48 Academy Awards® and 7 Emmys® in his lifetime.

But we know that it really all started with a man and a dream. A dream that became a story. A story now being told in an entirely new way . . .

A VERY SPECIAL STORY – 100 YEARS IN THE MAKING

Walt Disney’s philosophies are at the heart and soul of Disney storytelling and experiences; they include telling meaningful stories, creating believable characters, summoning the spirit of adventure and discovery, appreciating the wonders of the world around us, feeling the magic of sound and music, and always experimenting and innovating.

“We at the Walt Disney Archives are incredibly excited to present this new and unique exhibition marking a century of unparalleled innovation and storytelling, celebrating the wonder of Disney, from 1923 to present and on into the future,” says Becky Cline, Director of the Walt Disney Archives. “We are thrilled to have the incredible opportunity to showcase how Walt still inspires and informs new generations of storytellers at Disney, and to provide a glimpse of the wonders yet to come in the next century of Disney magic.”

Filling the expansive, state-of-the-art, 20,000-square-foot Bank of America Gallery at Union Station with more than 250 objects and artifacts across ten imaginatively themed galleries, the Walt Disney Archives has opened its vault of treasures to showcase works of art, costumes and props, and Disney memorabilia.

Celebrating a Century of Magic:

Disney100: The Exhibition Extended in Kansas City

October 16, 2024, marked a momentous occasion as The Walt Disney Company celebrated its 101st anniversary. In a special event at Union Station, officials revealed some thrilling developments regarding Disney100: The Exhibition, which is proudly presented in Kansas City by Bank of America. Originally set to conclude on November 30, the exhibition has been extended through January 5, 2025, in response to an overwhelming demand, especially during the holiday season.

Becky Cline, Director of the Walt Disney Archives, shared that after its run in Kansas City, the exhibition will make its way to Europe, offering a final opportunity for attendees to experience this incredible showcase before it leaves the city.

“We knew we had something special with Disney100: The Exhibition from all the connections that Walt himself had with Kansas City and our region,” said George Guastello, president and CEO of Union Station. “So far, we’ve welcomed guests from all 50 states and 11 countries, and the takeaway is the same: they come to relive the magic and memories of their past. They grew up with Disney shows and characters in their homes. They were swept away by Disney movies in theatres. And many visited Disney theme parks as some of their most special moments. Walt made history during his time in Kansas City and like him, we feel that it’s our obligation to keep moving forward and pave new paths. With exhibitions like Disney100: The Exhibition, we know we’re doing just that by connecting generations and encouraging people to pursue their dreams with passion.”

The exhibition's extension—thru Jan 5th—means that visitors, especially those traveling to Kansas City for the festive season, can immerse themselves in the magic that has defined Disney over the past century.

Already, over 115,000 tickets have been sold, positioning Disney100: The Exhibition to become one of Union Station’s most attended exhibitions yet. The Exhibition has also received one of the highest guest satisfaction ratings in the history of the station.

“We at The Walt Disney Company are pleased to announce the extension of the exhibition here in Kansas City,” said Becky Cline, Director, Walt Disney Archives. “It’s truly special to see Walt’s story, both personally and professionally, presented in a place that was so impactful in his early career. We hope everyone will have the opportunity to experience the magic of 100 years of Disney that has spanned generations and touched the hearts of fans around the world. For people here in the Kansas City region, that magic is, understandably, especially personal.”

Adding a personal touch to the day’s festivities was Roy Patrick Disney, grandson of Roy O. Disney and great-nephew of Walt Disney, who reflected on the enduring ties his family has with Kansas City. His presence served as a stark reminder of the historical significance of the event as he walked through the storied halls once graced by his relatives.

In addition to the impressive ticket sales, another 30 Disney-themed events and programs have attracted thousands of attendees, featuring influential figures from the Disney universe. Presenters as part of Disney100: The Exhibition Speaker Series have included luminaries such as Disney Legend Bill Farmer, the official voice of Goofy, Bret Iwan, the official voice of Mickey Mouse, and more. Topics have ranged from the history of Walt’s time in Kansas City to costume and design and even Walt Disney’s favorite foods.

As Union Station gears up for the holiday season—an annual draw for over 250,000 visitors—this extension of Disney100: The Exhibition is a perfect gift for families.

“Union Station is where Kansas City comes to celebrate,” noted Ray Kowalik, Board Chairman of Union Station. “Families from across the region gather here to reminisce and forge new memories together. With the holidays approaching, extending Disney100: The Exhibition could not have come at a better time. We invite guests of all ages, both new and returning, to experience the magic of Disney’s century-long journey right here in Kansas City.”

A JOURNEY OF INNOVATION, DISCOVERY AND CURIOSITY.

. .

Celebrating 25 Years of Science City

As we celebrate the remarkable 25th anniversary of Science City, we embark on a journey that began with a vision filled with hope and potential: “To ignite a passion for discovery by creating one-ofa-kind adventures.” This vision has not only driven the evolution of Science City but has also inspired generations of learners, dreamers, and innovators. Housed in the beautifully restored Union Station, Science City embodies the spirit of community, curiosity, and the limitless possibilities that science offers.

The roots of Science City trace back to September 1993 when a dedicated group of visionaries, the Science City Volunteer Council, kicked off their first major event. Their passion and collaborative spirit brought together an array of Kansas City businesses, organizations, and creative minds, all united to create unforgettable experiences. More than 22 exhilarating community events were planned and executed, each one aimed at raising awareness and supporting Science City and the restoration of the historic Union Station. Together, these volunteers, over 500, raised an incredible $1.45 million, a foundational investment in what would become an unparalleled science center.

Fast forward to November 10, 1999, a day that ignited excitement and anticipation across Kansas City. After years of careful planning, raising funds and construction, the dreams of both a world-class science center and a revitalized historic rail depot came to fruition. The grand opening of Science City welcomed families from all walks of life, eager to explore this innovative hub of learning. Science City’s $20 million exhibits included Family Medicine, City Golf, Farm Environment, Challenger Center, Secret City, Sports Training Center, Dinosaur Films, LTD., Test Kitchen, Mister E. Hotel, Crime Lab, Storm Center, Astronaut Training Center, Balanced Bicycle, and 17 other exhibit spaces.

In the following years, Science City continued to reimagine itself, introducing new exhibits and experiences that catered to the evolving needs of its audience. Since 1999 Science City has welcomed nearly 6 million guests including hundreds of thousands of school groups and scholarship programs. Reaching all audiences, Science City is able to provide exciting adventures where students conduct hands-on experiments, STEM programming, and more leaving students and guests with a spark of curiosity.

Burns & McDonnell created a gigantic idea: a competition to inspire kids to think big about STEM in support of Science City. The concept was truly unique in the academic space – students would compete to design a science center concept, which would come to life as a million-dollar exhibit at Science City. Since then, Burns & McDonnell Battle of the Brains has grown to become one of the most robust K-12 STEM competitions in the United States. And here in Science City, that effort has resulted in the creation and opening of truly world-class experiences including Unplugged in 2013 followed by Genetics: Unlock the Code and Every Last Drop in 2014. And since then, four more Battle of the Brains exhibits have come to life in Science City: Simple Machines at Play (2017), Amazing Brain (2019), Step Right Up! (2021) and Riveting Robots (2023) with more to come. Battle of the Brains has had more than 25,000 student participants across 55 school districts, fostering a competitive spirit in STEM education. With eight unique exhibits,

the program has left a lasting impact, encouraging hundreds of thousands of scholarship students to explore science.

In 2018, Science City established the "Science City Powered by Burns & McDonnell" initiative, a commitment to promoting STEM fields through a multimillion-dollar investment of $2.5-3 million over five years. This partnership has helped develop new initiatives and programming, ensuring Science City remains at the forefront of educational excellence.

Science City remains steadfast in its mission to ignite a passion for learning. Each day, as new visitors step through their doors, they are welcomed into a realm of discovery that highlights the beauty of science and the joy of exploration. Here is to 25 years of imagination, curiosity, and community, and many more years of inspiring futures we have yet to imagine. Join us in celebrating the journey that is Science City, where the possibilities are as vast as the universe itself!

LIGHT LAB – OPENING MAY 2025

Science City is primed for a thrilling future, continuing its 25-year legacy of lifelong love for science, learning and discovery. With the highly anticipated "Light Lab" set to debut in May 2025, visitors will embark on an extraordinary journey into the mesmerizing world of light. Art Around

Union Station is a stunning example of beaux arts architecture, characterized by its grand design and historic marble finishes that transcend back to a bygone era. Over the last two years, the Station has embarked on an impressive journey of restoration and preservation, of artistic offerings throughout the campus. Numerous artistic pieces have been meticulously restored, while

WESTPORT MURAL

Hildreth Meière was often commissioned to create art that reflected the location or theme of her work, and she took special care with a project for her friends, the Harveys of the prolific Fred Harvey Family and hospitality business. Known for her thorough research, Meière reflected the significance of Westport Landing on the Missouri River, a key starting point for trips west in the late 1840s. Provisions were economical, with prices like corn and oats at 30 cents a bushel, 20% cheaper than in St. Louis. This made Westport Landing a hub for those journeying west. In 1936, Meière created three mural panels depicting the scenes of arrival, outfitting, and commerce at Westport Landing, highlighting its historical role in provisioning and its eventual merger with Kansas, forming Kansas City, Missouri. Learn more about the mural by visiting the touch screen kiosk at the top of the Grand Hall Staircase.

These panels originally hung in Union Station's Westport Room restaurant and were recently restored thanks to support from

new installations have also been introduced, creating a harmonious blend of old and new. These carefully curated artworks not only enrich the visual experience for visitors, but also celebrate the Station's legacy as a vibrant cultural hub. The result is a captivating environment where history and contemporary creativity coexist, inviting all who pass through to appreciate the artistry that thrives within its walls.

WELCOME ALL MURAL

Welcome to the Ramón Murguía Visitor Entrance at Union Station, a space that celebrates cultural diversity and inclusivity. This B-level entry rotunda not only serves as a gateway to Union Station but also embraces unity and community. Admire the beautiful mural by Kansas City artist Chico Sierra. It welcomes visitors in multiple languages and features elements from the city’s rich culture and history. Designed to reflect Kansas City’s "Welcome All" spirit, the mural includes local landmarks and diverse faces, along with references to Murguía’s parents' home in Mexico. The word “welcome” is spelled out in nine languages, inviting all backgrounds to experience Union Station and the city.

The mural is a depiction of the diversity of Kansas City and highlights various iconic landmarks and people within the community. It shines a light on Kansas City’s rich cultural tapestry by highlighting people from the community. Notice the culture that is deeply rooted and tied to Kansas City, like the American Livestock exchange, bison, fountains, barbecue, and jazz.

Portraying community members was important in showing the diversity and the humanity of the city and the individuals who call Kansas City home. Portraits of Sue Moreno, resident, and artist of Womontown and Lea Hopkins, who formed Kansas City’s first pride parade are portrayed. Paintings of legend Charlie Parker and musician Hermon Mehari can be found. Local

sports teams, such as the Kansas City Chiefs and the Royals, are depicted.

Everyday citizens are portrayed as families, children, artists and more. People who make an impact on the community by truly living with a “welcome all” attitude and actions.

Elizabeth “Lisa” Lopez-Galvan was such a person and a beloved member of our Latino community. Born in Kansas City to Heriberto and Ana Margot Lopez, she grew up in the Westside neighborhood and remained a devoted resident of the Kansas City area throughout her life.

Coming from a family with a deep musical tradition, Lisa carried on the legacy as "DJ Lisa G," a soughtafter presence at various events including quinceañeras, weddings, graduations, and parties across the metro area. She hosted the “Taste of Tejano” music night on KKFI radio and made numerous guest appearances on other shows.

Lisa's vibrant personality shines through in her likeness most recently added to our "Welcome All" mural.
