COMMUNITY INVESTMENT

“Kansas City Strong.” Union Station first introduced this theme and call for strength and unity just weeks after COVID-19 forced us all out of public spaces in March 2020. That simple and powerful phrase resonated deeply and was echoed by the voices of countless local leaders, organizations, and media outlets.

One year later—by March of 2021—your Union Station had not only survived but thrived as we welcomed Kansas Citians back to their beloved spaces and traditions. Throughout, our visual voice conveyed optimism and pride in our diverse and dynamic city.

That year also validated our plans and promises to reach new heights and further our commitment to be “Where Kansas City CelebratesTM.”

Then, in 2022, “Celebrations” became our reality across our core attractions, touring exhibitions, seasonal events, and community gatherings of every size.

In fact, 2022 ended with Union Station setting records in nearly every measure of success. Could that be topped in 2023? The answer—as outlined in this 2023 Impact Report—is a resounding YES!

From a Super Bowl Rally in February of last year, to the NFL Draft in April, to the opening of yet another million-dollar Science City exhibition—Riveting Robots—courtesy of Burns & McDonnell, to a recordsetting Holiday Reflections season, the cascade of successes added up to historic and record-setting guest visits and revenue.

LETTER FROM OUR LEADERSHIP

The Barbie Movie, Taylor Swift, and Beyoncé in Kansas City were also part of that historic lift. As Union Station does so well, we leveraged our historic and modern venues to welcome tens of thousands of movie and music fans looking for a stunning backdrop to create forever memories with families and friends.

Then, in early November of last year, we made yet another monumental announcement by welcoming Walt Disney back to where his iconic career began— here in Kansas City (including essential ties to Union Station). Under our Grand Hall Clock—on November 1st—community leaders, dignitaries, and Walt Disney Executives gathered to share details of Disney 100: The Exhibition, opening in our Bank of America Gallery on May 24th of this year. Once again, history is being made here in Kansas City’s historic home.

25 years ago, your magnificently restored Union Station and all-new Science City opened to international acclaim. Today, the early promises have been fulfilled, and a grand vision guides us into a vibrant and vital future.

We invite you to now read within the following pages more about our 2023 achievements and all the ways you can be involved in helping us embrace 2024 and beyond with strength and a united commitment to celebrating the best of who we are and what we can become.

“Kansas City Strong and United.” It’s as meaningful and motivational today as when we first proclaimed it four years ago.

And when our community faces tragedy and needs healing—as happened this past February—those words of strength and truth are especially comforting.

All of this, of course, is possible because of wonderful friends and supporters like you.

With Endless Gratitude,

Our Vision

To be Kansas City’s iconic symbol of inclusion, inspiration, lifelong learning, and its center for civic celebration.

Our Mission

Union Station Kansas City is dedicated to preserving its historic monument and its stories, inspiring lifelong learning, and creating lasting memories for our community.

PRESERVATION OF HISTORIC MONUMENT & STORIES

Key Renovations

In preserving Union Station, we preserve our history, our landmark, our gateway, and the indomitable spirit of Kansas City. In 2023, we completed key renovation projects, including an upgraded concessions stand, elevator modernization, floor polishing and restoration, concrete and asphalt repairs, updated security system, and the new outdoor patio space.

Special thanks to the Edward F. Swinney Foundation, Bank of America, N.A., Trustee and the Sunderland Foundation for helping us maintain our historic building.

Dunn Family Wall Dedication

Union Station added a new installation to our permanent history exhibit, Union Station Stories, in honor of the prolific Dunn family, and celebration of Mr. William H. Dunn, Sr.’s 100th birthday. This installment honors the generations of Dunn family influence beginning in the 1870’s through today. The Dunn installment rededicates a substantial bronze plaque, originally hung in 2001 by the International Brotherhood of Carpenters for William T. Dunn’s “fine workmanship as a carpenter foreman in Kansas City’s original Union Depot.” The ambition, determination, and inspiration of countless individuals and families—like the Dunns—are preserved and presented for future generations to embrace.

Ramón Murguía Visitor Entrance

In October, Union Station unveiled the “Ramón Murguía Visitor Entrance” in honor of Ramón, the immediate past chair of our Board of Directors. Serving as a symbolic representation of our strong DEI initiatives and supported by sponsor Country Club Bank, the entranceway features a 360-degree domed “Welcome All” mural created by the celebrated Chicano artist, Chico Sierra. This heavily trafficked major entry point to the Station is here to welcome all, from all walks of life. In Chico’s words, “… the different symbols painted throughout represent the fabric of space and time on which we weave our literal and figurative cultural fabric to create a powerful quilt that represents a diverse and inclusive humanity.” At this time, Union Station introduced the “Ramón Murguía Scholarship Fund” to provide group scholarships for schools and Hispanic nonprofit community groups. Through this fund, we will perpetuate Ramón’s “All Are Welcome” vision and expand on our commitment to greater Kansas City’s Hispanic community.

Grand Hall Staircase

As the Ramón Murguía Visitor Entrance honored all that is to come, the renovations of the Grand Hall Staircase honored the history of Kansas City’sfounding.Inthe1930s,HildrethMeièrewascommissionedtopaint three murals—“Arrival at Westport Landing,” “Outfitting at Westport Landing,”and“Commerce of the Prairies”—as part of the modernization of the Westport Room Restaurant at Union Station. In 2023, Meière’s triptych has received new life, having been masterfully restored by our friends atVanWitt Fine Art Conservation, and installed in Union Station’s historic Grand Hall Staircase.

Special thanks to the William T. Kemper Charitable Trust, UMB Bank, n.a., Trustee and Richard J. Stern Foundation for the Arts – Commerce Bank, Trustee for making this transformation possible.

Riveting Robots

Robots have arrived at Science City! Science City's thrilling new exhibit, brought to life by Burns & McDonnell's Battle of the Brains, opened in September. Spanning nearly 2,800 square feet, this $1 million marvel invites you to engage with eight interactive spaces. You can build and code robots, witness lidar sensors in action, race robots, and discover tasks too complex for humans.

Battle of the Brains is Kansas City’s most exciting K-12 STEM competition. So far, more than 30,000 students have benefitted from this immersive educational opportunity, the most recent being the Raytown Challenge Gifted Program! This exhibit is a testament to STEM education’s power, thanks to the Raytown Challenge Gifted Program and Burns & McDonnell’s unwavering support.

SCIENCE CITY GUEST REVIEWS

Science City is a great place for kids of all ages. So much to explore. Been going here since I was a child and how it has grown since its opened is astounding. And I’m so happy they keep the old attractions as well as add new ones.

100% and A+! Our Science City family outings with the grandkids are always enjoyable! We’ve been visiting Science City with the grandsons since they were preschool age and now they are 10 and 11! They ask to visit Science City when they are with us and Science City has never disappointed them! The old activities are cherished and the new activities are thrilling and appreciated.

Our 9-year-old twins LOVE going to Science City at Union Station. We finally joined as members and have zero regrets. Check out the robot-building area, dinosaur bone excavation, outdoor climbing structure, and the SKY BIKE!

Expanding Your Horizons

In January 2023, Union Station was the proud host to 303 girls in grades 6-8 from across the Kansas City metro area for Expanding Your Horizons. This special “Girls Night in Science City” is designed to spark girls’ imaginations and transform their image of what is possible in a variety of STEM career paths. There were 21 after-hours hands-on workshops, ranging from aviation to cells to robotics, capped with a keynote from Emily Arnold, Assistant Professor at the School of Engineering at the University of Kansas. Our 2023 EYH was made possible thanks to the support of sponsor Olsson Engineering.

Sensory Sundays

As a nonprofit organization, it is our philanthropic mission to be a place that welcomes and serves all members of our community. With this in mind, we are taking steps to become more inclusive to guests of all abilities. Sensory Sundays returned to Science City every quarter in 2023. Before normal operating hours, Science City provides a welcoming space for our guests on the Autism spectrum and those with sensory sensitivities. Sound effects in Science City are turned off, with minimal lighting effects. Special sensory-friendly activities and designated quiet areas are available.

First Ever Cultural Influences Day

On November 11th, Science City hosted its first-ever Cultural Influences Day, a celebration of the world cultures that have contributed to the progression of science. Not only does Science City educate about the science of the world around us, but also about the diversity of those people and cultures that advanced these sciences. Keep an eye out for future Culture Days!

TRAVELING EXHIBITIONS

MAYA: The Great Jaguar Rises

Before we said goodbye to the culturally significant MAYA: The Great Jaguar Rises exhibition, which told the story of one of the world’s greatest civilizations and how their accomplishments continue to shape our lives today, Union Station hosted an “Inspired by MAYA” pop-up art gallery showcasing the works of 24 local Latino and Indigenous artists for the last 3 weeks of MAYA’s run.

Our friends at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art loaned us a 1,500-year-old inscriptionary stone as an additional, new piece of artwork to MAYA: The Great Jaguar Rises. The inscriptionary stone, originating from 514 C.E. is of Mayan culture and measures 23 ½” tall by 20 ½” wide and 2 ½” deep and weighs approximately 120 pounds.

Thank you to our exhibit sponsors: Bank of America, the City of Kansas City, Missouri Neighborhood Tourist Development Fund, and Missouri Humanities Council.

Spider-Man: Beyond Amazing

Everyone’s favorite neighborhood superhero swung into Union Station over the summer. Spider-Man: Beyond Amazing opened in May 2023 to take guests on a journey from Spider-Man’s humble beginnings to his presentday status as one of the world’s most popular fictional characters. Guests viewed priceless original art including pages and covers by many of comics’ most popular and influential figures— including Spidey’s infamous swing through the historic Jones Store.

Special thanks to Spider-Man’s presenting sponsor, JPMorgan Chase, and our supporting sponsors, Worlds of Fun, The Westin at Crown Center, and the Neighborhood Tourist Development Fund.

Bricktionary: The Ultimate LEGO® A-Z

Hot on the heels of Spider-Man: Beyond Amazing, we welcomed the international touring exhibition Bricktionary: The Ultimate LEGO® A-Z. This highly interactive hands-on experience featured more than 150 custom-built LEGO® models, pushing the limits of what’s possible with these classic bricks.

“We jumped at the opportunity to be the presenting sponsor of Bricktionary,” Mike Smith, Twin Lakes Insurance Agency CEO, said. “What better place to host an exhibit that features one of the world’s most beloved toys than at Union Station, the place of millions of great family memories? As a local company, it’s important to us to partner with organizations who have similar values: fostering education, valuing family, and serving the community.”

Bricktionary was made possible by our presenting sponsor, Twin Lakes Insurance Agency, and our supporting sponsors, JE Dunn Construction, Bricks & Minifigs, KC Brick Store, and the City of Kansas City, Missouri Neighborhood Tourist Development Fund

A PLACE TO CELEBRATE FOR ALL

Taylor Swift

All of Kansas City has been enjoying the Taylor Swift Effect, your Station included! In anticipation of her sold-out shows at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium (where her romance with Travis began, but we digress…), we pulled out all the stops, from friendship bracelets and charms in Science City’s Maker Studio to 100% sold-out Laser Taylor Swift shows in our Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium.

Barbie

Our 109-year-old monument turned pink inside and out in celebration of the iconic Barbie. Thanks to our friends at the Kansas City Museum, we curated a mini walk-through experience of 64 years of historic Barbie artifacts, including iconic Barbie and Ken dolls, clothing, Barbie’s Dream Pool, and more.

Beyoncé

No rest when it comes to pop icons! When Queen Bey made her stop at Arrowhead in October, Union Station welcomed the Renaissance World Tour to KC with an epic Alpha-Lit photo op and Laser Beyoncé tribute shows.

Chiefs

Union Station, the Visual Voice of Kansas City™, also known as Kansas City’s home of the CHIEEEEEFS. Chiefs Kingdom turned out in droves to support our champs with our Chiefs-themed events and activities, including a very special Giving Machine in support of various charities around Kansas City.

Union Station was also the proud hosts of the Chiefs Championship Ring Ceremony, commemorating their second title in four years.

Union Station Kansas City, Inc | Impact Report 2023 15

NFL Draft

Union Station has been the scene of so many celebrations, from intimate and personal to expansive and elaborate. Over an unbelievable three days (and many more in preparation and deconstruction), 312,000 in-person guests and 54 million remote guests watched the NFL Draft happening live in our front yard.

Holiday Reflections

2023 was the biggest and brightest season of Union Station’s iconic walk-through experience, Holiday Reflections, Presented by BOK Financial, yet! This massive indoor experience had spectacular new additions including a Liquid Fireworks Fountain, and the cutting-edge Proto hologram display, which captivated 185,000 guests with its lifelike projections and interactive experiences. This year, we were also the proud hosts of the first-ever Tinsel & ‘Tinis—presented by Russell Stover—a series of adults-only evenings celebrating the magic of the Holidays in the warm indoor embrace of Union Station’s historic halls. Miles of garlands, sky-reaching lights, a forest of decorated trees, and dazzling overhead ornaments created magic for new and returning families. Crowds have been gathering at Union Station to celebrate the magic of the season since 1914. That’s an honor and privilege we intend to carry on for many generations to come.

In addition to BOK Financial, thanks to the following supporting sponsors: CPKC, Helzberg Diamonds, PGAV Architects.

Volunteer Hours

There is no Union Station without the talents and generosity of our dedicated volunteers. They breathe life into our historic halls. They add personality to our worldclass exhibits. Our volunteers represent the best of who we are and what we do to ensure Union Station remains a vital place of innovation, celebration, and education.

Just take it from Elivorio (El) Ochoa, one of many familiar friendly faces around the station during the Holidays:

"My just reward for volunteering at Union Station today was running the mini train. I spied a little girl on the outside of the train fence, staring at me when I came around the corner. She made eye contact with me and asked if I was coming to her house. I waved at her and said of course I was. It was worth my five hours of time today."

USKC was lucky enough to welcome 475 volunteers throughout the year, many on a recurring basis.

In 2023, these individuals gave a collective 20,210 service hours = a value of $622,507.
