There are more than 40 major buildings and excellent athletic facilities. More than $120 million in new campus construction has been completed during the past decade, including several new Georgian-Colonial classroom buildings that support state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities. Most of Union’s on-campus housing was constructed in 2008. Student-suggested design features were incorporated in each new building; all residence buildings include a private bedroom for each student. The campus is situated along the U.S. 45 bypass in north Jackson and is adjacent to one of Jackson’s largest concentration of retail establishments and restaurants. For a second consecutive year, Union was listed among 77 “schools to watch” across the nation. Overall, the magazine ranks Union 16th among master’s universities in the South, which means Union has been classified as a Top Tier institution each year since 1997. Editors also identify Union as an “A+ option for serious B students.” * Princeton Review: Princeton Review ranks Union among the top 141 schools in the Southeast. Nationally, 640 schools received this regional ranking, which is only accorded to about 25% of the nation’s colleges and universities. * Forbes: In its second annual “America’s Best Colleges” edition, Forbes editors evaluated 600 of the nation’s 4,000 colleges and universities based on the quality of the education they provide, and how much their students achieve. Union ranked 278th on the Forbes list -- up four places from last year -- and was one of only two institutions in Tennessee west of Nashville selected for inclusion. * America’s 100 Best College Buys: An objective and independent research company surveys more than a thousand U.S. colleges and universities each year, then analyzes the information to find out which schools offer the best education for the dollar based upon academic performance indicators and comparative costs. Union University has been among schools identified as “America’s 100 Best College Buys” since 1998. * President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll: Initiated in 2006, this award recognizes colleges and universities nationwide that support innovative and effective community service and service-learning programs. Union is also one of only 160 institutions named to the list for three straight years, and one of only six four-year schools in Tennessee with that distinction. * College Access and Opportunity Guide: Union is listed among 220 U.S. colleges “committed to serving and supporting today’s first-generation, low-income and traditionally underserved college-bound students.” Union is one of only four Tennessee institutions so honored. * Colleges of Distinction: Union and the other schools chosen for inclusion in this guide exhibit four distinctives of superior colleges and universities: engaged students, great teaching, vibrant communities and successful outcomes. * Templeton Foundation: Union is listed in the Foundation’s guide entitled Colleges that Encourage Character Development. Schools included in this listing have “exemplary programs, presidents, and colleges and universities that inspire students to lead ethical and civic-minded lives.”

head coach David Niven begins his second season as the Union University men’s basketball head coach, and his 14th season with the Bulldog program. In his first two seasons at Union, Niven served as a volunteer assistant coach, and then became full-me in 1999. In 2003, Niven earned the posion of associate head coach for the Union men’s basketball program and became head coach in 2009. He spent the 1996-97 season as an assistant coach at Oklahoma Bapst. In his first season as head coach, Niven posted a 26-8 record overall and a 14-2 mark in the TranSouth. His team earned the conference regular season and tournament tles, and advanced to the NAIA Naonal Tournament. Niven is deeply commied to excellence both on and off the court. He aligns himself with the identy, mission and vision of Union in both his coaching and mentoring of his players. He is devoted to the development of his players physically, academically and spiritually.
“I feel a calling upon my life to fulfill the Great Commission as a college basketball coach”, says Niven. “I want to teach my players how to place their hope in eternal things and not the things of this world.” Union president Dr. David S. Dockery says, “Dave has demonstrated over and over again his deep commitment to the identy, mission and vision of this university. His life exemplifies a ‘team above self’ mind set that will, I am sure, characterize in days ahead the atude of his team both on and off the court.”

More importantly, the stasc he is most proud of is the 36 players that have graduated during his me as their academic advisor. “No coaching staff in the country will place more emphasis on the academic success of our players than we do here at Union”, says Niven. “Each player will have the commitment from our staff to prepare them for life aer basketball.”
Niven, a 1996 graduate of Oklahoma Bapst University, spent his playing career at OBU and finished with a four-year career record 12124. In those four years, he played on teams that were ranked No. 1 in the NAIA, advanced to the NAIA Naonal Championship game, and two Final Fours. While at OBU in 1997, as assistant coach for the Bison, Niven received his Master of Educaon degree from East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma. He received valuable coaching experience as the Bison went 36-4 and made it to the 1997 NAIA Naonal Championship Finals. Niven and his wife Mandy Beth have been married for six years. They have three children, Jacob (4), Zack (3) and Emma (1).

season outlook
The Union University men’s basketball team enters the 201011 season with a new excitement. It is David Niven’s second season as head coach of the Bulldogs. Union is coming off of back-to-back TranSouth Conference Titles and a second straight appearance in the NAIA Naonal Tournament. Union also welcomes in Trevor Lydic who is in his first season as assistant coach at Union aer spending the last three years at Pearl River Community College. Ben Easley is also new to the coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach aer spending last season as an assistant coach at Lane (Tenn.). Union graduated five players, including NAIA All-American Greg Truvillion. However, a solid group of three returning starters will help Union with a run at a third straight conference tle. Union also brings four impact newcomers to the floor this season, led by redshirt sophomore guard CJ Davis. Stan McNeil returns aer being named a second team all-conference performer in 2009-10. Samuel Danache returns for his sophomore year aer being named to the TranSouth all-freshman team a year ago. Antoine Joseph and Roland Banhoro join McNeil as the three returning starters from last season. Niven says, “We’re excited about 2010-11. We have a great group of returning players along with a solid recruing class. It should be a fun year at Union!” The senior class has four players, including three players that are compleng their fourth year at Union. Joseph, Banhoro and Veljko Petrovic each look for their third conference tle. Joseph and Banharo have started during their career and will be called on to be leaders in their final season. McNeil returns aer leading Union last season in three pointers made. Three juniors, all newcomers to the program, will look to make immediate impacts this season. Shane Burrell, Skyler Vaden and Antoine Hall will also see plenty of acon this season as they look to help offset the offense lost last season to graduaon. The sophomore class has four players, all of which were at Union last season. Danache, Daniel Kelley and Brady Sheppard return and will look to take advantage of increased opportunies to contribute this season. Davis was a red-shirt last season, but is expected to play a major role in Union’s success from the point guard posion this year. The two freshmen on the roster are Hollis Belton and Paul Valdor who will work to increase his skills and contribuons to the program over their first season. Union again will navigate through one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the NAIA. Union faces NAIA powers and naonal tournament parcipants including McKendree (Ill.) twice, Life (Ga.) twice, Campbellsville (Ky.) twice, William Carey (Miss.) twice, Faulkner (Ala.) and Tougaloo (Miss.) once. Union also faces tough compeon in the TranSouth with teams such as Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.), Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.), Cumberland (Tenn.) and Marn Methodist (Tenn.), all of which have made trips to the naonal tournament in recent years. (‘09-’10)...played in all 34 games for Union, staring three mes...averaged 7.3 points and 3.4 rebounds per game...was named to the TranSouth All-Freshman team. (‘08’09)...Red Shirt. Before Union. Danache prepped at New American School in Hai where he played basketball. Danache was named MVP and Slam Dunk Champion his senior year. Skyler Vaden
6-2 • 175 lb. • Junior • Guard Hometown: Los Angeles, Calif. Previous School: Bakersfield CC Birthday: December 8
#5
Coach’s Comments. Skyler has been a great late pickup for our team over the summer. We signed him because of his ability to defend and handle the ball. Skyler will be one of our best defensive players both on and off the ball. He has great strength for the guard posion. He has also shown a tremendous ability to get to the basket and make the open shot. Skyler will play all three guard posions for us this year. Union Career. (‘10-’11)...First season at Union. Before Union. Vaden transferred to Union aer spending two seasons at Bakersfield (Calif.) Community College. He averaged 11.7 points, four assists and two steals per game. Vaden was named first team all-conference in the Western State Conference. He ranked No. 3 in the conference with his 2.3 steals per game. Vaden, a nave of Los Angeles, played his high school basketball at Washington (Calif.) Prep. He averaged 17 points per game as a senior and was named first team in the Marine League.
Antoine Hall
6-6 • 200 lb. • Junior • Guard Hometown: Douglasville, GA. Previous School: Gadsden State CC Birthday: October 25
#23
Coach’s Comments. Antoine is another late pickup over the summer that will really help us this season. Antoine can play the 3 and the 4 and will be a really good shooter for our team. Last season he was one of the best shooters in Alabama. Antoine will be a player that can guard many spots on the floor. We expect him to be a versale defender and shooter on the wings. Union Career. (‘10-’11)...First season at Union. Before Union. Hall transferred to Union from Gadsden State (Ala.) Community College. While at Gadsden State, Hall averaged 11.4 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. He led the team with a conference 3-point shoong percentage of .413. The Douglasville nave posted season highs in a game versus Beville State (Ala.) where he scored 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds, including a 5-for-6 effort from behind the arc. Hall played his high school basketball for Douglasville High School. He averaged 15 points and four rebounds and was a 3-year varsity player. As a senior, Hall was named to the all-district team.

Shane Burrell
6-8 • 275 lb. • Junior • Forward Hometown: Los Angeles, Calif. Previous School: Trinidad State CC Birthday: July 25
#44
Coach’s Comments. Shane is a versale big man like some of best post players from previous years. Shane has great ball skills as a handler and passer. He has worked extremely hard condioning this off season and connues to improve as we approach the season. Shane can score and pass quite well in the post. If he becomes a great rebounder, he has the chance to be one of the best we’ve had. Union Career. (‘10-’11)...First season at Union. Before Union. Burrell transferred to Union from Trinidad State (Colo.) Community College. The forward averaged 14 points and a team high six rebounds per game. Burrell posted season highs with 30 points and 11 rebounds. As a freshman, Burrell played at Alabama A&M where he led the team with a 64-percent field goal percentage. Burrell played his high school basketball for Dorsey (Calif.) High School where he averaged 20 points and 11 rebounds. He was regarded as one of the top players in Los Angeles as a senior. Burrell played on an under 19 basketball team that traveled overseas.
CJ Davis
6-1 • 180 lb. • Sophomore • Guard Hometown: Nashville, Tenn. Previous School: Los Angeles City College Birthday: May 17
#32
Coach’s Comments. CJ really made the most out of his redshirt season last year. Because of his efforts, he is a much beer player today and has put himself in a posion to be a leader on our team. CJ can score from anywhere and is an incredible finisher at the basket. He has really worked on his point guard skills and does a good job of creang shots for his teammates. Union Career. (‘09-’10)...red-shirt season at Union. Before Union. Davis transferred to Union from Los Angeles City College where he played one season of basketball. His high school career started at Goodpasture (Tenn.) High School where he played three seasons, before playing his senior year at Southside High School in Atlanta. He helped lead his AAU Nashville Stallions team to the 2007 naonal tle. During high school, Davis was named district MVP three mes, region MVP twice, twice named first team all-state, and finished runner-up in the player of the year vong as a senior. He was named AAU Naonal Tournament MVP as a senior and was named AAU Kentucky Hoopfest MVP as a junior. In his senior year at Southside, Davis averaged 28.6 points, 8.5 assists and 6.4 rebounds per game. In the AAU Naonal Tournament, he posted 36.8 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. Hollis Belton
5-11 • 190 lb. • Freshman • Guard Hometown: Halls, Tenn. Previous School: Halls HS Birthday: May 11
#24
Coach’s Comments. Hollis came in as a student assistant and quickly found himself on the pracce floor. Not only does he serve our team willingly with a cheerful heart, but he really makes us beer in pracce. Hollis is a nice shooter that really understands how to play. I am excited that Hollis has the opportunity to play on our team this season. Union Career. (‘10-’11)...first season at Union. Before Union. Belton prepped at Halls (Tenn.) High School where he played basketball, baseball and golf. He was named MVP and team captain as a senior in basketball. Belton scored 21.2 points and shot 89 percent from the free throw line. He was also named team captain for his baseball and golf teams. Belton was a member of the Naonal Honor Society.
Paul Valdor
6-8 • 220 lb. • Freshman • Forward Hometown: Cap Haitien, Haiti Previous School: Notre Dame HS Birthday: August 28
#42
Coach’s Comments. Paul has been quite a surprise early into his redshirt season for our team. Paul is an excellent outside shooter. Considering his limited basketball background in Hai, he has picked up both offensive and defensive concepts quickly. Paul’s main goals this season will be to get faster and stronger. If that occurs, he will contribute next year as a freshman. Union Career. (‘10-’11)...first season at Union (red-shirt). Before Union. Valdor played high school basketball at Notre Dame in Hai. He helped lead his team to championships in 2003 and 2004.

About the NAIA
The purpose of the Naonal Associaon of Intercollegiate Athlecs (NAIA) is to promote the educaon and development of students through intercollegiate athlec parcipaon. Member instuons, although varied and diverse, share a common commitment to high standards and to the principle that parcipaon in athlecs serves as an integral part of the total educaonal process. The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recognizes the importance of the individuality of each member instuon, the value of the conferences and Associaon of Independent Instuons (A.I.I.) structure, and the benefits of membership in a naonal associaon. The NAIA supports gender equity. Gender equity is an atmosphere and reality where fair distribuon of overall athlec opportunity and resources, proporonate to enrollment, are available to women and men, and where no student-athlete, coach or athlecs administrator is discriminated against in any way in the athlecs program. That is to say, an athlecs program is gender-equitable when the men’s sports program would be pleased to accept as its own the overall parcipaon opportunies and resources currently allocated to the women’s sports program and vice versa.
Advancing sport with innovative change
The NAIA has 50,000 student-athletes parcipang at nearly 300 member colleges and universies throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 25 conferences and the Associaon of Independent Instuons (A.I.I.), the NAIA offers 23 championships in 13 sports. Since 1937, the NAIA has connued a long tradion of pushing the envelope and making a posive difference in the lives of students, coaches and parents. The Champions of Character program is the latest cung-edge addion to the NAIA’s proud history of innovaon (www.championsofcharacter.org). Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator are commied to the true spirit of compeon through the five core values: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.
