For a second consecutive year, Union was listed among 77 “schools to watch” across the nation. Overall, the magazine ranks Union 16th among master’s universities in the South, which means Union has been classified as a Top Tier institution each year since 1997. Editors also identify Union as an “A+ option for serious B students.” * Princeton Review: Princeton Review ranks Union among the top 141 schools in the Southeast. Nationally, 640 schools received this regional ranking, which is only accorded to about 25% of the nation’s colleges and universities. * Forbes: In its second annual “America’s Best Colleges” edition, Forbes editors evaluated 600 of the nation’s 4,000 colleges and universities based on the quality of the education they provide, and how much their students achieve. Union ranked 278th on the Forbes list -- up four places from last year -- and was one of only two institutions in Tennessee west of Nashville selected for inclusion. * America’s 100 Best College Buys: An objective and independent research company surveys more than a thousand U.S. colleges and universities each year, then analyzes the information to find out which schools offer the best education for the dollar based upon academic performance indicators and comparative costs. Union University has been among schools identified as “America’s 100 Best College Buys” since 1998. * President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll: Initiated in 2006, this award recognizes colleges and universities nationwide that support innovative and effective community service and service-learning programs. Union is also one of only 160 institutions named to the list for three straight years, and one of only six four-year schools in Tennessee with that distinction. * College Access and Opportunity Guide: Union is listed among 220 U.S. colleges “committed to serving and supporting today’s first-generation, low-income and traditionally underserved college-bound students.” Union is one of only four Tennessee institutions so honored. * Colleges of Distinction: Union and the other schools chosen for inclusion in this guide exhibit four distinctives of superior colleges and universities: engaged students, great teaching, vibrant communities and successful outcomes. * Templeton Foundation: Union is listed in the Foundation’s guide entitled Colleges that Encourage Character Development. Schools included in this listing have “exemplary programs, presidents, and colleges and universities that inspire students to lead ethical and civic-minded lives.”

UNION UNIVERSITY
season outlooks
WOMEN
The Union University women’s cross country team is coming off their seventh straight TranSouth Championship. As Union tries to connue that streak in 2010, the Lady Bulldogs will return their top five runners from last year. Union has also added two runners to help strengthen their 2010 team. Union has two seniors, Kayla Hauss and Carrie Moore. Both Hauss and Moore were allconference runners on last year’s championship team. Two juniors star on the 2010 roster including Hannah Clardy and Carissa Wilson. Clardy won the TranSouth individual tle last season and represented Union as an individual qualifier in the NAIA Naonal Meet. Wilson was an all-conference performer as well. Sophomores Cally Howell and Lilli Harmon look to contribute more following successful freshmen seasons. Harmon was an all-conference runner as a freshman. Two freshmen join the Union cross country program in 2010. Ashlee Stewart and Allison Marn will try to make an immediate impact as they enter college with outstanding high school resumes. Union head coach Gary Johnson will be once again leading a team with the target on their backs. In addion to the regulars foes of Bethel (Tenn.), Blue Mountain (Miss.), Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) and Lyon (Ark.), Union will have one more team to run against as Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) has added cross country to their list of varsity sports.
MEN
The Union University men’s cross country team is coming off their sixth straight TranSouth Conference Championship. Union lost one runner from last year’s team, but is returning each of their top three runners. Union has also added a runner who was a state qualifier in high school. Union has one senior, Dan Ramer, returning to complete his running career. Ramer has been a solid runner and leader for Union during his career. Three juniors lead the way for Union in 2010 including Zach Covington, Joel Wellum and Alex Be. Be was the TranSouth individual champion last season, while Covington finished second. Both Be and Covington represented Union as individual qualifiers at the 2010 NAIA Naonal Meet. Wellum has been a steady runner for Union for two seasons. The sophomore class has two runners, Drake O and Logan Smith. O finished fourth in last year’s conference meet, earning him an all-conference award. Smith posted solid mes as a freshman and looks to contribute more as a sophomore. Union’s two freshman include Edwin Kurgat and Caleb Creel. They come in with solid resumes and will look to make an immediate impact on Union squad. Head coach Gary Johnson knows his team has a target on their backs as his squad has won the past six conference tles. New to the list of teams that will be chasing his squad is Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.), who has added cross country as a varsity sport. With each of the other four schools including Bethel (Tenn.), Blue Mountain (Miss.), Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) and Lyon (Ark.) improving, Union will have a tough test in 2010. Union’s men have been to two NAIA Naonal Meets as a team and have boasted six straight conference tles. Johnson is looking to lead his squad to their seventh conference tle and a third team appearance at naonals.
coach’s thoughts
Coach Johnson says, “We have high expectaons for the student-athletes who are members of the cross country programs at Union. We expect our runners to contribute to Union University spiritually, academically, and athlecally. This year should be especially rewarding in terms of naonal recognion with mulple runners being eligible for NAIA scholar awards, potenal naonal qualifiers, and the NAIA scholar team achievement.” Johnson adds, “I am excited to see how our new runners fit in with an established group. We have a strong cast returning for both teams and that encourages me about the prospects of compeng for our conference championship and trying to qualify for the naonal meet. We only graduated one runner from the top 5 of either team, so this group is experienced and understands the expectaons we have for them. It should be an excing and challenging year.”
