There are more than 40 major buildings and excellent athletic facilities. More than $120 million in new campus construction has been completed during the past decade, including several new Georgian-Colonial classroom buildings that support state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities. Most of Union’s on-campus housing was constructed in 2008. Student-suggested design features were incorporated in each new building; all residence buildings include a private bedroom for each student. The campus is situated along the U.S. 45 bypass in north Jackson and is adjacent to one of Jackson’s largest concentration of retail establishments and restaurants. For a second consecutive year, Union was listed among 77 “schools to watch” across the nation. Overall, the magazine ranks Union 16th among master’s universities in the South, which means Union has been classified as a Top Tier institution each year since 1997. Editors also identify Union as an “A+ option for serious B students.” * Princeton Review: Princeton Review ranks Union among the top 141 schools in the Southeast. Nationally, 640 schools received this regional ranking, which is only accorded to about 25% of the nation’s colleges and universities. * Forbes: In its second annual “America’s Best Colleges” edition, Forbes editors evaluated 600 of the nation’s 4,000 colleges and universities based on the quality of the education they provide, and how much their students achieve. Union ranked 278th on the Forbes list -- up four places from last year -- and was one of only two institutions in Tennessee west of Nashville selected for inclusion. * America’s 100 Best College Buys: An objective and independent research company surveys more than a thousand U.S. colleges and universities each year, then analyzes the information to find out which schools offer the best education for the dollar based upon academic performance indicators and comparative costs. Union University has been among schools identified as “America’s 100 Best College Buys” since 1998. * President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll: Initiated in 2006, this award recognizes colleges and universities nationwide that support innovative and effective community service and service-learning programs. Union is also one of only 160 institutions named to the list for three straight years, and one of only six four-year schools in Tennessee with that distinction. * College Access and Opportunity Guide: Union is listed among 220 U.S. colleges “committed to serving and supporting today’s first-generation, low-income and traditionally underserved college-bound students.” Union is one of only four Tennessee institutions so honored. * Colleges of Distinction: Union and the other schools chosen for inclusion in this guide exhibit four distinctives of superior colleges and universities: engaged students, great teaching, vibrant communities and successful outcomes. * Templeton Foundation: Union is listed in the Foundation’s guide entitled Colleges that Encourage Character Development. Schools included in this listing have “exemplary programs, presidents, and colleges and universities that inspire students to lead ethical and civic-minded lives.”

UNION UNIVERSITY

season outlook

The Union University women’s soccer program is coming off their best TranSouth regular season in the five-year history of their program. Union finished second in 2009 with a 4-1 league record. Union looks to connue to build on the progress that has been made over the last five years. In 2010, Union will be replacing a class of 12 seniors, seven of which started for Union over their careers. Included in that class of graduates is the program’s only NAIA All-American and holder of numerous program records, Caitlin Zimmerman Courtner. Union head coach Brandon Boylan will be bringing in 15 new faces to help fill the void from the losses of a year ago. Despite the large graduang class in 2009 and the numerous newcomers to the program, coach Boylan and Union returns 10 players that started in 2009, including eight players that started over 10 matches. Union boasted five all-conference players in 2009, with four returning for 2010. “We are a young team this year with a mojority of our roster being freshman and sophomores”, says coach Boylan. “However for the second year in a row we feel really good about the contribuon that the freshman class could make depending on their transion to the college game. We feel the sophomore class is more understanding of the demands of college soccer and are ready to take their game to the next level. Our juniors and seniors know what it takes and what needs to be done in order to win a conference championship. They are going to do their best to lead the underclassman and connue to strive to come out on top of a tough conference.” The senior class of 2010 is made up of eight players, seven of which are returning. Samantha Gase was second team all-conference last season as a defender. Eboni Murphy led Union with nine goals and was a first team all-conference player and will redshirt in 2010. Also returning is Amber Lovelady, Kelly Bogdanovich, Courtni Kimble,Kae Johnson and Kori Elrod. The lone newcomer in the senior class is Kyndal Bradford. Three players fill the junior class led by second team all-conference playerBridjet Roney. Terilyn Wassell and Chrisna Reardon also return for their junior season. The second largest class on the roster is the sophomores with 11 players. Sara Weir returns as a first team all-conference defender. Steffi King is back aer leading Union with four assists last season to go along with her five goals. Also returning is Kelsey Gilbert, Lindsey McGary, Whitney Kramer, Becca Menhart, Elizabeth Cochran, Mary Jane Garro andChrisna Brimm. Sarah White and Natalie Stallings are newcomers to the Union program. The freshman class is made up of 11 players that will be starng their college soccer careers with the Lady Bulldogs of Union. The freshman class will be Christal Fisher, Nicole Sheffield, Genesis Regalodo, Carey Suter, Dionna Linn, Emily Warren, Racheal Boswell, Emily Crane, Megan Roney, Grace Boto and Ashley Zidan. Boylan says, “We are playing another tough non-conference schedule to prepare us for the demands of playing in the TranSouth conference. I expect the conference to be beer from top to boom. All of the conference teams will be improved from last year.” Union has improved their conference finish in each year of the program. Only one more spot is le to take in this tough conference that has produced a two-me NAIA Naonal Champion and the defending conference champions, Marn Methodist (Tenn.). Union has two matches with teams that finished in the NAIA top 10 in 2009, including William Carey (Miss.) at #3 and Marn Methodist at #6. Union also plays Asbury (Ky.) who was receiving votes in 2009 and advanced to the NAIA Naonal tournament, along with William Carey and Marn Methodist. Union will also face off against three NCAA DII opponents. “We lost a great class in our seniors last year”, says Boylan. “They sacrificed to help get us where we are today. They have laid the foundaon for who we are today both on and off the field. It is up to our current team to connue the success and even build upon what has been done in the past.”

About the NAIA

The purpose of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is to promote the education and development of students through intercollegiate athletic participation. Member institutions, although varied and diverse, share a common commitment to high standards and to the principle that participation in athletics serves as an integral part of the total educational process. The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recognizes the importance of the individuality of each member institution, the value of the conferences and Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) structure, and the benefits of membership in a national association. The NAIA supports gender equity. Gender equity is an atmosphere and reality where fair distribution of overall athletic opportunity and resources, proportionate to enrollment, are available to women and men, and where no student-athlete, coach or athletics administrator is discriminated against in any way in the athletics program. That is to say, an athletics program is gender-equitable when the men’s sports program would be pleased to accept as its own the overall participation opportunities and resources currently allocated to the women’s sports program and vice versa.

Advancing sport with innovative change

The NAIA has 50,000 student-athletes participating at nearly 300 member colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 25 conferences and the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.), the NAIA offers 23 championships in 13 sports. Since 1937, the NAIA has continued a long tradition of pushing the envelope and making a positive difference in the lives of students, coaches and parents. The Champions of Character program is the latest cutting-edge addition to the NAIA’s proud history of innovation (www.championsofcharacter.org). Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every studentathlete, coach, official and spectator are committed to the true spirit of competition through the five core values: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.
