There are more than 40 major buildings and excellent athletic facilities. More than $120 million in new campus construction has been completed during the past decade, including several new Georgian-Colonial classroom buildings that support state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities. Most of Union’s on-campus housing was constructed in 2008. Student-suggested design features were incorporated in each new building; all residence buildings include a private bedroom for each student. The campus is situated along the U.S. 45 bypass in north Jackson and is adjacent to one of Jackson’s largest concentration of retail establishments and restaurants. For a second consecutive year, Union was listed among 77 “schools to watch” across the nation. Overall, the magazine ranks Union 16th among master’s universities in the South, which means Union has been classified as a Top Tier institution each year since 1997. Editors also identify Union as an “A+ option for serious B students.” * Princeton Review: Princeton Review ranks Union among the top 141 schools in the Southeast. Nationally, 640 schools received this regional ranking, which is only accorded to about 25% of the nation’s colleges and universities. * Forbes: In its second annual “America’s Best Colleges” edition, Forbes editors evaluated 600 of the nation’s 4,000 colleges and universities based on the quality of the education they provide, and how much their students achieve. Union ranked 278th on the Forbes list -- up four places from last year -- and was one of only two institutions in Tennessee west of Nashville selected for inclusion. * America’s 100 Best College Buys: An objective and independent research company surveys more than a thousand U.S. colleges and universities each year, then analyzes the information to find out which schools offer the best education for the dollar based upon academic performance indicators and comparative costs. Union University has been among schools identified as “America’s 100 Best College Buys” since 1998. * President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll: Initiated in 2006, this award recognizes colleges and universities nationwide that support innovative and effective community service and service-learning programs. Union is also one of only 160 institutions named to the list for three straight years, and one of only six four-year schools in Tennessee with that distinction. * College Access and Opportunity Guide: Union is listed among 220 U.S. colleges “committed to serving and supporting today’s first-generation, low-income and traditionally underserved college-bound students.” Union is one of only four Tennessee institutions so honored. * Colleges of Distinction: Union and the other schools chosen for inclusion in this guide exhibit four distinctives of superior colleges and universities: engaged students, great teaching, vibrant communities and successful outcomes. * Templeton Foundation: Union is listed in the Foundation’s guide entitled Colleges that Encourage Character Development. Schools included in this listing have “exemplary programs, presidents, and colleges and universities that inspire students to lead ethical and civic-minded lives.”

UNION UNIVERSITY

season outlook

The 2011 season for the Union University baseball team is one of high expectaons. The Bulldogs enter the season as the No. 16 ranked team in the NAIA preseason poll and are picked to finish second in the TranSouth Conference preseason coaches’ poll. Union is coming off back-to-back appearances in the NAIA Naonal Tournament Opening Round. The Bulldogs look to make the next step in 2011. Despite graduang their top weekend starter and five starters in the lineup, Union is reloading to connue the momentum started by the previous teams. Union head coach Brent Fronabarger and assistant coach Joseph Talley have assembled 15 newcomers to go along with 13 returning players. Of the 13 returners, three starters are back along with the second, third and fourth best starng pitchers from last season. The senior class has just five players, including two that are new to the program in 2011. Returning seniors include Kevin Kirksey, Derek Copley and Dan Beck. Kirksey is the only four-year player and returns aer posng a .997 fielding percentage and earning a TranSouth Gold Glove award last season at first base. He also was second on the team with three saves. Copley was a first team all-conference performer as a weekend starter last season with eight wins. Beck is coming off his first season as an offensive player, in which he excelled as one of Union’s top pinch-hiers. New to the program is right handed pitcher Ma Fike and ouield slugger Oscar Depablos. Both will be counted on oen this season. The junior class is the largest on the roster with 12 players. Five of the 12 are returning for Union. Jeremey Stack, Danny Grimm, Clint Barnes and Cody Dew are back for their third seasons with the Bulldogs. Stack was the No. 2 weekend starter last season before injury caused him to miss several starts during conference play. However, Stack remains one of the best arms on the staff and will be among the leaders in the rotaon in 2011. Grimm was named a second team all-conference player and gold glove winner at the shortstop posion last season. Barnes was one of the leaders in on-base percentage and led the team with 28 steals. Dew returns as a quality arm out of the bullpen, leading all relievers with three wins. Tim Anderson returns for his second season, having provided quality backup at the catching posion last season, demonstrang a great arm behind the plate by throwing out 4-of-12 would-be base stealers. R.J. Rayborn, Kian Jost, Doug Joyce, Bre Pawlen, Ben Moncello, Bryan Hill and Jusn Bryan are all new to the program this season. Each will be called on oen to contribute to the success of the team. Six sophomores are on the roster, including four returning aer a successful freshman season. Jared Davis went 8-1 on the season as a starter, earning a second team all-conference selecon. Benjie Fesmire pitched in six games and also played in the field for Union as a freshman. David Leisey saw limited acon out of the bullpen, but will be called on more after developing his game as a freshman. Cole McAdams sat out last season, but made a huge impact as a freshman in 2009, earning a gold glove at first base. He is the team’s most versale infielder, plus a very valuable sck at the plate. Colin Hatch will red-shirt this season aer going 2-0 with a save in eight appearances last season. He missed the second half of the season with an injury. Derek Roof is new to the program and the right-hander will add more depth to the pitching rotaon as a sophomore. The freshman class includes five players. Kyle Bryan, Logan McDougall, Jim Marn, Marn Key and Wacey Russell. Bryan, McDougall and Russell will each provide depth in the ouield. Marn and Key will solidify the infield. The Bulldogs face a tough schedule in 2011. Union plays at No. 1 Cumberland April 1-2. Cumberland is the defending NAIA Naonal Champion, and is picked to repeat as conference champs. Union’s win over Cumberland in the conference tournament last season was the only loss for Cumberland in their final 29 games of the season. Conference opponents Bethel (Tenn.) and Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) are receiving votes in the preseason rankings. In the non-conference schedule, Union plays several ranked opponents. Union host No. 18 South Carolina-Beaufort on Feb. 5. and No. 12 Belhaven (Miss.) on March 16. On March 21, Union plays No. 6 Embry-Riddle (Fla.) in Lebenon, Tenn. and then at No. 12 Belhaven on March 29. Union host NCAA DII opponent North Alabama on April 26. Fronabarger will be leading this team in his sixth season. He is just 30 wins shy of 200 for his career (170-98-1, .633). KEVIN KIRKSEY

6-4 • 225 lbs. • Senior • R/R • 1B/Pitcher Hometown: Gastonia, North Carolina Previous School: Ashbrook High School Birthday: October 16

Coach’s Comments. Kevin is a solid player that contributes as an everyday player and a pitcher. From the beginning of his freshman year to now, he has made the biggest improvement of anyone on our team. Kevin is the best first baseman in the country when it comes to defense. Offensively, he has developed into a complete player. I expect Kevin to provide pop to the boom third of our lineup. On the mound, Kevin is a versale guy that can start or pitch in relief. We expect Kevin to contribute in relief this season.

Union Career. 2008...played in 33 games, starng 24 mes...hit .250 with one home run and 12 RBI. DEREK COPLEY

6-3 • 215 lbs. • Senior • R/R • Pitcher Hometown: Dyer, Tennessee Previous School: Univ. of Southern Mississippi Birthday: August 23

Coach’s Comments. Derek is the hardest worker on our staff. We expect him to anchor our weekend rotaon this spring. Aer a first team all-conference selecon in 2010, he is poised to improve on those results in 2011. Derek is a fierce competor that wants the ball when it maers most. He possesses a good fastball to go along with a great curve ball. His leadership and desire are what makes him special.

Union Career. 2010...was 8-2 with a 4.67 ERA with one save...tallied 63 strikeouts in 69.1 innings with one shutout and five complete games...was named first team all-conference and was a TranSouth Scholar Athlete. Before Union. Copley played baseball and basketball at Gibson County High School. He earned All-District, District MVP, and All-State Two Way team honors. DAN BECK

6-2 • 195 lbs. • Senior• R/R • OF/Pitcher Hometown: Columbus, Georgia Previous School: Middle Georgia CC Birthday: September 23

Coach’s Comments. Dan was our best pinch-hier last year. He has shown the ability to drive the baseball. He will have the opportunity for quality at-bats early. With solid defense, he can be an everyday contributor. Dan provides punch from the right side of the plate. His ability to give us quality at bats off the bench makes him so valuable. Union Career. 2009...pitched in nine games, all in relief...was 0-1 in 9.1 innings with 12 strikeouts. 2010...moved to the offense...hit .300 with six hits, eight runs, two home runs and eight RBI in 20 at bats, mostly in a pinch hing role. Before Union. Beck transferred to Union from Middle Georgia Community College where he played one season of baseball. As a freshman at MGCC, he posted a 5.28 ERA. Beck prepped at Columbus (Ga.) High School where he played four years of baseball and football. He helped lead Columbus to the state tle in 2004 and 2005, while finishing runner-up in 2006 and 2007. Beck was named All Bi-City twice and was named Top-100 underclassmen list as a junior. He hit .444 with seven home runs and 58 RBI, while posng a 1.38 in 7.2 innings as a senior. CLINT BARNES

5-10 • 175 lbs. • Junior • L/R • Outfield Hometown: Bolivar, Tennessee Previous School: Bolivar Central High School Birthday: May 2

Coach’s Comments. Along with Danny, Clint is our offensive table seer. Coming of a great sophomore year, we expect much of the same in 2011. Clint can handle the bat and run. He finds ways to get on base (.456 OB%) and steal bases (28 last season). Because of hard work, he has made himself into a solid all-around player. On defense, Clint will move from le to center field. Clint will lead our ouield this spring. Expect a great season from Clint. Union Career. 2009...played in 40 games with 32 starts...hit .226 with 10 RBI and two stolen bases. 2010...played in all 59 games for Union with 55 starts...hit. 342 with 61 runs, 12 doubles, two home runs and 30 RBI...led the team with 28 stolen bases.

Before Union. Barnes played four seasons of baseball at Bolivar Central High School for Coach Mark Fulghum as an ouielder and catcher. He also played four seasons of football at Bolivar as a wide receiver and linebacker. In baseball, he helped lead his team to a district tle in 2007, followed by region and seconal tles in 2008. Barnes was a three-me All-District and All-Tournament player, twice named All-West Tennessee, and was named District MVP as a senior in 2008. As a senior, Barnes hit .452 with 45 runs, 16 doubles, one triple, six home runs, and 29 RBI. He recorded only six strikeouts in his 124 atbats. DANNY GRIMM

5-9 • 175 lbs. • Junior • R/R • Shortstop Hometown: Jackson, Tennessee Previous School: University School of Jackson Birthday: October 15

Coach’s Comments. Danny is one of our all around best players offensively. He sets the tone from the leadoff spot (.456 OB%, 14 SB, 55 R). Danny handles the bat beer that anyone on our team. About the NAIA

The purpose of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is to promote the education and development of students through intercollegiate athletic participation. Member institutions, although varied and diverse, share a common commitment to high standards and to the principle that participation in athletics serves as an integral part of the total educational process. The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recognizes the importance of the individuality of each member institution, the value of the conferences and Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) structure, and the benefits of membership in a national association. The NAIA supports gender equity. Gender equity is an atmosphere and reality where fair distribution of overall athletic opportunity and resources, proportionate to enrollment, are available to women and men, and where no student-athlete, coach or athletics administrator is discriminated against in any way in the athletics program. That is to say, an athletics program is gender-equitable when the men’s sports program would be pleased to accept as its own the overall participation opportunities and resources currently allocated to the women’s sports program and vice versa.

Advancing sport with innovative change

The NAIA has 50,000 student-athletes participating at nearly 300 member colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 25 conferences and the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.), the NAIA offers 23 championships in 13 sports. Since 1937, the NAIA has continued a long tradition of pushing the envelope and making a positive difference in the lives of students, coaches and parents. The Champions of Character program is the latest cutting-edge addition to the NAIA’s proud history of innovation (www.championsofcharacter.org). Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every studentathlete, coach, official and spectator are committed to the true spirit of competition through the five core values: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.
