For a second consecutive year, Union was listed among 77 “schools to watch” across the nation. Overall, the magazine ranks Union 16th among master’s universities in the South, which means Union has been classified as a Top Tier institution each year since 1997. Editors also identify Union as an “A+ option for serious B students.” * Princeton Review: Princeton Review ranks Union among the top 141 schools in the Southeast. Nationally, 640 schools received this regional ranking, which is only accorded to about 25% of the nation’s colleges and universities. * Forbes: In its second annual “America’s Best Colleges” edition, Forbes editors evaluated 600 of the nation’s 4,000 colleges and universities based on the quality of the education they provide, and how much their students achieve. Union ranked 278th on the Forbes list -- up four places from last year -- and was one of only two institutions in Tennessee west of Nashville selected for inclusion. * America’s 100 Best College Buys: An objective and independent research company surveys more than a thousand U.S. colleges and universities each year, then analyzes the information to find out which schools offer the best education for the dollar based upon academic performance indicators and comparative costs. Union University has been among schools identified as “America’s 100 Best College Buys” since 1998. * President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll: Initiated in 2006, this award recognizes colleges and universities nationwide that support innovative and effective community service and service-learning programs. Union is also one of only 160 institutions named to the list for three straight years, and one of only six four-year schools in Tennessee with that distinction. * College Access and Opportunity Guide: Union is listed among 220 U.S. colleges “committed to serving and supporting today’s first-generation, low-income and traditionally underserved college-bound students.” Union is one of only four Tennessee institutions so honored. * Colleges of Distinction: Union and the other schools chosen for inclusion in this guide exhibit four distinctives of superior colleges and universities: engaged students, great teaching, vibrant communities and successful outcomes. * Templeton Foundation: Union is listed in the Foundation’s guide entitled Colleges that Encourage Character Development. Schools included in this listing have “exemplary programs, presidents, and colleges and universities that inspire students to lead ethical and civic-minded lives.”

UNION UNIVERSITY

director of athletics Tommy Sadler enters his 27th year of service at Union University, and the third in his role as the Director of Athletics for Union. Sadler was named to this position after serving the 2008-09 year as the acting athletics director. He follows in the footsteps of Dr. David Blackstock, who had been Union’s Athletic Director for the past 34 years. Sadler, a native of Jackson, is a 1972 graduate of South Side High School and a 1976 graduate of Union University. During his time at Union, Sadler played four years of baseball for the Bulldogs. In 1981, he received his Master of Education from the University of Memphis. His tenure at Union began in 1985 as director of public relations. After a year in that role, he became the university’s director of corporate and foundation support, a position he held for 10 years. In 1996, Sadler then moved into his previous role as associate director of athletics.

Sadler earned the Union University Staff Member of the Year in 1994. In 2010, Sadler was named the TranSouth Conference Athletic Director of the Year. Sadler has also been very active in athletics at the conference level. He is beginning his ninth year as the president of the TranSouth Conference, of which Union is a member. Prior to this time as president, he served the conference as its vice president.

“Tommy Sadler has faithfully served Union University in a variety of ways through the years, but his key contribution has been in his work with the athletic department,” Dockery said. “He is respected by all of our coaches, by those who support the athletic program and by the leadership of the university. At this transitional time in the life of our athletic department, I know of no one better to help us chart a future course for that department than Tommy Sadler.” Sadler and his wife Michelle, a teacher in the Jackson-Madison County School District, make their home in Jackson.

head coach Brandon Boylan begins his seventh season as head coach for the Union University Lady Bulldog soccer team. Boylan has built this young program from its inaugural season in 2005 to a conference contender. In each of the past six seasons, Boylan has led Union to finishes in the top half of the league, including a regular season runner-up finish in 2009, which was their highest finish to this point in program history. Boylan not only coaches the varsity women’s soccer program but also oversees the reserve team program that is now in its sixth year. Boylan and the Lady Bulldogs set a program record in 2007 and 2008 with 13 wins. In 2009, the team posted their best finish in the TranSouth with a runner-up finish. Union boasted third place finishes in the conference tournament in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. The team earned bids to two straight NAIA Region XI Tournament in 2007 and 2008, prior to the NAIA eliminating the region format. Boylan’s career coaching record is 58-44-5 (.565). In addition to coaching women’s soccer, Boylan serves the University on the athletic facilities staff to help maintain Union’s athletic fields. He is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), in which he has two soccer coaching diplomas. Boylan also holds a coaching license from the United States Soccer Federation.

A 1996 graduate of Union, Boylan received a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and Health. Boylan, a native of Jacksonville, North Carolina, has served on several different soccer staffs since graduating from Union. In 1996, he was hired as the acting head coach for Covington High School where he stayed until 1999. His responsibilities at Covington included all on-field preparation of the team during practice and games for both the men’s and women’s teams. Other responsibilities included scheduling, fund-raising and working closely with the athletic director in regards to eligibility. Boylan also served as assistant coach at East Tennessee State University, an NCAA Division I program, from 1999 through 2000. Some of his responsibilities at ETSU included contributing to on field preparation for the team during practices and games, and also traveling for the purpose of recruiting athletes for the soccer program.

He also has four years of international experience in Japan during his high school career. During his time at Union as a student, Boylan was instrumental in the starting and building of Union’s first ever men’s soccer program, which became varsity in 1998. He played four years for the Union club soccer team that participated in the Southeastern Collegiate Club Soccer League. Boylan is married to the former Rachel Rice of Munford, Tenn. She is a graduate of Union with a degree in Biology and is currently working as a Pharmacist with ‘Super D’ Drug Stores. UNION UNIVERSITY

season outlook

The 2011 Union University women’s soccer will once again look to compete for a conference title. Union posted an overall record of 9-7-2 last season, and a conference record of 2-3-1. Union finished third in the league and has been as high as second in the six-year history of the program. Union head coach Brandon Boylan says, “The coaching staff is excited for the new season. The incoming freshmen have brought a high level of play into our program. With the returning players dedicated to their fitness, and having a better understanding of the demands of the college game, we look to be an improved team from last year. Our success this season will hinge on how fast the freshmen adjust to the college game, and when the returning players and newcomers find their chemistry.” Union has a large group of returning players. Nineteen players return from last year from either varsity or reserve team roles. Twelve of the returning players started at some point on the varsity team. Union lost five players from last season’s team that started at some point. However, head coach Brandon Boylan will take fifteen newcomers and fill voids as he works to build this team. The senior class is made up of four players including Terilyn Wassell, Bridget Roney, Christina Reardon and Eboni Murphy. Reardon was selected to the second team allconference last season. Murphy sat out last season, but returns for her senior season as a former all-conference player. Eight juniors complete the list of upperclassmen. They include Sara Weir, Christina Brimm, Whitney Kramer, Steffi King, Sarah White, Natalie Stallings, Kelsey Gilbert, and Elizabeth Cochran. Kramer, Weir and White were all named second team all-conference players last season. The sophomore class is also made up of eight players. They include Emily Warren, Emily Crane, Megan Roney, Nicole Sheffield, Ashley Zidan, Sarah Helton, Dionna Linn, and Rachael Boswell. Only Helton is a newcomer on this list as the other seven are back for their second seasons. The freshman class is the largest class with fourteen players. They include Rainy Rasmusen, Mallory Wilson, Kelsey Graeter, Alex Taylor, Rebecca McDonough, Ashlie Watson, Kay Morgan, Sara Johnson, Karli Schumaker, Bethany Stiles, Whitney Moskovitz, Eliza Clark, Brittney Presley, and Megan Jay. These players will hope to impact the success of the program and be able to push this program to a higher level over the next four years. Coach Boylan and his assistant, Isaac Brooks, look to take this group of players and move challenge for the league title. Union faces the tough TranSouth Conference that boasts former NAIA National Champion and perennial power, Martin Methodist (Tenn.). Union’s non-conference schedule is also highlighted by a road match on August 30 at NCAA DI Austin Peay (Tenn.). This will be the final season for Union to compete in the TranSouth Conference and NAIA. The university has been approved to begin the NCAA Division II membership process.

About the NAIA

The purpose of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is to promote the education and development of students through intercollegiate athletic participation. Member institutions, although varied and diverse, share a common commitment to high standards and to the principle that participation in athletics serves as an integral part of the total educational process. The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recognizes the importance of the individuality of each member institution, the value of the conferences and Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) structure, and the benefits of membership in a national association. The NAIA supports gender equity. Gender equity is an atmosphere and reality where fair distribution of overall athletic opportunity and resources, proportionate to enrollment, are available to women and men, and where no student-athlete, coach or athletics administrator is discriminated against in any way in the athletics program. That is to say, an athletics program is gender-equitable when the men’s sports program would be pleased to accept as its own the overall participation opportunities and resources currently allocated to the women’s sports program and vice versa.

Advancing sport with innovative change

The NAIA has 50,000 student-athletes participating at nearly 300 member colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 25 conferences and the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.), the NAIA offers 23 championships in 13 sports. Since 1937, the NAIA has continued a long tradition of pushing the envelope and making a positive difference in the lives of students, coaches and parents. The Champions of Character program is the latest cutting-edge addition to the NAIA’s proud history of innovation (www.championsofcharacter.org). Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every studentathlete, coach, official and spectator are committed to the true spirit of competition through the five core values: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.
