There are more than 40 major buildings and excellent athletic facilities. More than $120 million in new campus construction has been completed during the past decade, including several new Georgian-Colonial classroom buildings that support state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities. Most of Union’s on-campus housing was constructed in 2008. Student-suggested design features were incorporated in each new building; all residence buildings include a private bedroom for each student. The campus is situated along the U.S. 45 bypass in north Jackson and is adjacent to one of Jackson’s largest concentration of retail establishments and restaurants. For a second consecutive year, Union was listed among 77 “schools to watch” across the nation. Overall, the magazine ranks Union 16th among master’s universities in the South, which means Union has been classified as a Top Tier institution each year since 1997. Editors also identify Union as an “A+ option for serious B students.” * Princeton Review: Princeton Review ranks Union among the top 141 schools in the Southeast. Nationally, 640 schools received this regional ranking, which is only accorded to about 25% of the nation’s colleges and universities. * Forbes: In its second annual “America’s Best Colleges” edition, Forbes editors evaluated 600 of the nation’s 4,000 colleges and universities based on the quality of the education they provide, and how much their students achieve. Union ranked 278th on the Forbes list -- up four places from last year -- and was one of only two institutions in Tennessee west of Nashville selected for inclusion. * America’s 100 Best College Buys: An objective and independent research company surveys more than a thousand U.S. colleges and universities each year, then analyzes the information to find out which schools offer the best education for the dollar based upon academic performance indicators and comparative costs. Union University has been among schools identified as “America’s 100 Best College Buys” since 1998. * President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll: Initiated in 2006, this award recognizes colleges and universities nationwide that support innovative and effective community service and service-learning programs. Union is also one of only 160 institutions named to the list for three straight years, and one of only six four-year schools in Tennessee with that distinction. * College Access and Opportunity Guide: Union is listed among 220 U.S. colleges “committed to serving and supporting today’s first-generation, low-income and traditionally underserved college-bound students.” Union is one of only four Tennessee institutions so honored. * Colleges of Distinction: Union and the other schools chosen for inclusion in this guide exhibit four distinctives of superior colleges and universities: engaged students, great teaching, vibrant communities and successful outcomes. * Templeton Foundation: Union is listed in the Foundation’s guide entitled Colleges that Encourage Character Development. Schools included in this listing have “exemplary programs, presidents, and colleges and universities that inspire students to lead ethical and civic-minded lives.”

UNION UNIVERSITY

Director of athletics Tommy Sadler enters his 27th year of service at Union University, and the third in his role as the Director of Athletics for Union. Sadler was named to this position after serving the 2008-09 year as the acting athletics director. He follows in the footsteps of Dr. David Blackstock, who had been Union’s Athletic Director for the past 34 years. Sadler, a native of Jackson, is a 1972 graduate of South Side High School and a 1976 graduate of Union University. During his time at Union, Sadler played four years of baseball for the Bulldogs. In 1981, he received his Master of Education from the University of Memphis. His tenure at Union began in 1985 as director of public relations. After a year in that role, he became the university’s director of corporate and foundation support, a position he held for 10 years. In 1996, Sadler then moved into his previous role as associate director of athletics.

Sadler earned the Union University Staff Member of the Year in 1994. In 2010, Sadler was named the TranSouth Conference Athletic Director of the Year. Sadler has also been very active in athletics at the conference level. He is beginning his ninth year as the president of the TranSouth Conference, of which Union is a member. Prior to this time as president, he served the conference as its vice president.

“Tommy Sadler has faithfully served Union University in a variety of ways through the years, but his key contribution has been in his work with the athletic department,” Dockery said. “He is respected by all of our coaches, by those who support the athletic program and by the leadership of the university. At this transitional time in the life of our athletic department, I know of no one better to help us chart a future course for that department than Tommy Sadler.” Sadler and his wife Michelle, a teacher in the Jackson-Madison County School District, make their home in Jackson.

head coach Kelly Elliott begins her second season as the head coach of the Union University volleyball program. Elliott becomes the third head coach of the Union volleyball program since its beginning in 1998. In 2010, her first season as head coach, Elliott led Union to the TranSouth Regular Season title with a 13-1 league record. Elliott also continues as an Assistant Professor of Physical Education, Wellness and Sport at Union University since 2007. She maintains a teaching load in the Union sports management program. Prior to becoming a full-time professor, Elliot was a Resident Director at Union from 2004-2007 in the McAfee Residence Complex. During her career at Union, Elliott has compiled a 31-15 (.674) overall record. Elliott spent seven seasons (1997-2003) as the assistant coach at King (Tenn.) College under head coach Susie Toomey. Toomey, the mother of Elliott, spent 25 years at King accumulating a 749-229 record, which is sixth in the NAIA in total wins and seventh in the NAIA in winning percentage for a coaching career.

Kelly Elliott

Head Volleyball Coach 1050 Union University Drive Jackson, TN 38305 Phone: 731-661-5970 Email: kelliiott@uu.edu

Elliott earned her undergraduate degree in Psychology from King College in 1995 where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. Elliott also holds two Masters’ degrees. The first was a Master of Education in Counseling from the University of Louisville (Ky.) in 1997, followed by a Master of Arts in Physical Education, Sports Management concentration from East Tennessee State University in 1999.

As a student-athlete, Elliot was a four-year starter on the volleyball team at King from 1991-1994. She was voted into the King College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008 as part of the 1994 volleyball team, the only volleyball team to be inducted thus far. Elliott earned numerous honors including Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ Athlete of the Year in 1995, first team all-conference in 1993 and 1994, NAIA Scholar Athlete in 1993 and 1994, and earned NCCAA All-District and Scholar Athlete honors in 1993 and 1994. Elliott’s teams were also very successful as both a player and as an assistant coach. She was a part of four conference championships as a player and seven conference titles as an assistant coach. During her years as assistant coach, she helped lead her team to two NAIA National Tournaments, including one National Team Sportsmanship Award. Elliott also won four NCCAA District Tournaments and played in four NCCAA National Tournaments (two third-place finishes) as a player. Coach Elliott’s desire is to see the members of the Union volleyball team grow as players, but more importantly, as young women. She views her role of coach as one to challenge and mentor team members spiritually, academically, and athletically. Elliott and her husband, Michael, reside in Jackson and are the parents of Isaac and Anna. They are active members of Englewood Baptist Church, where Michael serves as the Minister to Families with Children.

UNION UNIVERSITY

season outlook The Union University volleyball program will begin the 2011 season under the leadership of second-year head coach, Kelly Elliott. Last season Elliott was named the TranSouth Conference Coach of the Year as she led the program to a fifth TranSouth regular season title. Coach Elliott says, “We come into this season with excitement and anticipation because of the talent and potential. With six returning players and six new additions, we are truly a new team this year. Fans and opponents will see a lot of different looks as we seek to find the right combination on the court with this young team. The 2011 team will have greater depth and will push each other at every position.” Last season’s team posted a 24-9 record overall and a league best 13-1 record in the TranSouth Conference. Union lost three starting seniors to graduation, and return two starters from the 2010 season. Six total returning players for 2011 will join six newcomers to the program. Three seniors will take the lead as they attempt to stay on top in the TranSouth. The seniors for Union include Anna Sims, Emmie Moroski and Cassidy O’Hair. Sims returns as a four-year starter for the Lady Bulldogs and was named to the TranSouth first team all-conference last season. Moroski returns for her second season at Union and was also named first team all-conference. O’Hair returns for her second season and will be called on to contribute even more in 2011. The junior class is made up of three players who will see a significant amount of playing time. Lauren Sprouse returns for her third season and will help solidify Union’s defense. Shelby Swink returns for her third season after playing in 32 matches as a sophomore. Amanda Deem, a junior college transfer, is a newcomer this year and will be expected to contribute right away for the Lady Bulldogs. The sophomore class is made up of only one player. Jami Humphries returns for her second season after playing in twelve matches as a freshman. She will be expected to contribute more this season as a sophomore. The five freshmen that make up the Lady Bulldog roster include Lydia Wright, Casie Logan, Kami Dickerson, Abbey Wainwright and Savannah Hughes. Wright and Hughes each played on state championship teams in high school, while Wainwright’s team was a quarterfinalist in the state tournament. This group of young players will get the chance to contribute early and continue the winning tradition that Union has established over the years. Union will be playing in the final season of NAIA competition this year as the university has been accepted to begin the NCAA Division II membership process. Union has just seven home games this season, including the home opener on September 16 versus conference foe Lyon (Ark.). Union will start the season in Johnson City, Tenn. at the Milligan College Classic. Union will also play in three other regular season tournaments this season including the Cumberland (Tenn.) Classic, Lindenwood (Mo.) Classic and the Savannah College of Art Design (Ga.) Classic. About the NAIA

The purpose of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is to promote the education and development of students through intercollegiate athletic participation. Member institutions, although varied and diverse, share a common commitment to high standards and to the principle that participation in athletics serves as an integral part of the total educational process. The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recognizes the importance of the individuality of each member institution, the value of the conferences and Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) structure, and the benefits of membership in a national association. The NAIA supports gender equity. Gender equity is an atmosphere and reality where fair distribution of overall athletic opportunity and resources, proportionate to enrollment, are available to women and men, and where no student-athlete, coach or athletics administrator is discriminated against in any way in the athletics program. That is to say, an athletics program is gender-equitable when the men’s sports program would be pleased to accept as its own the overall participation opportunities and resources currently allocated to the women’s sports program and vice versa.

Advancing sport with innovative change

The NAIA has 50,000 student-athletes participating at nearly 300 member colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 25 conferences and the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.), the NAIA offers 23 championships in 13 sports. Since 1937, the NAIA has continued a long tradition of pushing the envelope and making a positive difference in the lives of students, coaches and parents. The Champions of Character program is the latest cutting-edge addition to the NAIA’s proud history of innovation (www.championsofcharacter.org). Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator are committed to the true spirit of competition through the five core values: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.
