Overall, the magazine ranks Union 15th among regional universities in the South, which means Union has been classified as a Top Tier institution each year since 1997 and has ranked among the top 20 regional universities in the South for five consecutive years. Editors also identify Union as an “A+ option for serious B students.” Princeton Review Princeton Review ranks Union among the top schools in the Southeast. Nationally, 623 schools received this regional ranking, which is only accorded to about 25% of the nation’s colleges and universities. Chronicle of Higher Education: Great Colleges to Work For After a survey of 44,000 employees at 310 colleges and universities, the magazine chose 30 four-year institutions for its honor roll of Great Colleges to Work For. Union not only made that short list, but was also among only three schools to be recognized in 11 separate rating categories. America’s 100 Best College Buys An objective and independent research company surveys more than a thousand U.S. colleges and universities each year, then analyzes the information to find out which schools offer the best education for the dollar based upon academic performance indicators and comparative costs. President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll Initiated in 2006, this award recognizes colleges and universities nationwide that support innovative and effective community service and service-learning programs. Union is among a select group of institutions that has made the list in each of the years it has been compiled. College Access and Opportunity Guide Union is listed among 284 U.S. colleges “committed to serving and supporting today’s firstgeneration, low-income and traditionally underserved college-bound students.” Union is one of only four Tennessee institutions so honored. Colleges of Distinction Union and the other schools chosen for inclusion in this guide exhibit four distinctives of superior colleges and universities: engaged students, great teaching, vibrant communities and successful outcomes. Templeton Foundation Union is listed in the Foundation’s guide entitled Colleges that Encourage Character Development. Schools included in this listing have “exemplary programs, presidents, and colleges and universities that inspire students to lead ethical and civic-minded lives.”

UNION UNIVERSITY
Director of athletics Tommy Sadler enters his 27th year of service at Union University, and the third in his role as the Director of Athletics for Union. Sadler was named to this position after serving the 2008-09 year as the acting athletics director. He follows in the footsteps of Dr. David Blackstock, who had been Union’s Athletic Director for the past 34 years. Sadler, a native of Jackson, is a 1972 graduate of South Side High School and a 1976 graduate of Union University. During his time at Union, Sadler played four years of baseball for the Bulldogs. In 1981, he received his Master of Education from the University of Memphis. His tenure at Union began in 1985 as director of public relations. After a year in that role, he became the university’s director of corporate and foundation support, a position he held for 10 years. In 1996, Sadler then moved into his previous role as associate director of athletics.
Sadler earned the Union University Staff Member of the Year in 1994. In 2010, Sadler was named the TranSouth Conference Athletic Director of the Year. Sadler has also been very active in athletics at the conference level. He is beginning his ninth year as the president of the TranSouth Conference, of which Union is a member. Prior to this time as president, he served the conference as its vice president.

“Tommy Sadler has faithfully served Union University in a variety of ways through the years, but his key contribution has been in his work with the athletic department,” Dockery said. “He is respected by all of our coaches, by those who support the athletic program and by the leadership of the university. At this transitional time in the life of our athletic department, I know of no one better to help us chart a future course for that department than Tommy Sadler.” Sadler and his wife Michelle, a teacher in the Jackson-Madison County School District, make their home in Jackson.

UNION UNIVERSITY
head coach
Brent Fronabarger begins his seventh season as the head coach of the Union University Baseball program after serving eight seasons (1996-2005) as the assistant coach. Fronabarger is coming off three straight appearances in the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round and a second TranSouth Tournament Title in the past three seasons. Fronabarger has a career record of 208-115-1 (.644). On April 15, 2010, Fronabarger recorded his 200th career win at Mid-Continent (Ky.). He notched his 100th career victory on February 27, 2009 versus Huntington (Ind.). In 2010, Fronabarger led Union to 42 wins, the first time as a head coach to reach the 40-win mark. Union posted runner-up finishes in the regular season and conference tournament. Fronabarger also posted a milestone 2009 season as he led the team to the TranSouth Tournament Title and a trip to the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round. It was the first for both in his young career. Fronabarger received a Bachelor of Science in physical education and health from Union in 1996 and received a Master of Education degree from Union in 1998. He spent his days as the assistant coach working mostly with the pitchers. Fronabarger was named the AFLAC Assistant Coach of the Year in 2003 selected by Scholastic’s Coach and Athletic Director Magazine. Fronabarger has accumulated a 208-115-1 (.644) overall record in his five seasons. In 2006, Fronabarger’s first year as head coach, he led the Union Bulldogs to the NAIA Region XI Tournament, the teams first appearance since the 2002 season. Fronabarger has reached the 30-win mark four times and 40 wins once in his six seasons at Union. After graduating from Union in 1995, Fronabarger returned to his hometown where he helped coach the Huntingdon (Tenn.) High School Mustangs in both football and baseball during the 1996-97 seasons. In 1997, he was hired by Union as the assistant baseball coach and head of grounds. During his eight seasons as an assistant coach, Union baseball posted a win-loss record of 293-146 (.667) with two conference championships and three Region XI Tournament Appearances. The teams boasted three seasons with 40 or more wins. Fronabarger, the 1995 Tennessee Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year, holds several Union pitching records including Most Victories in a Season (13), Most Victories in a Career (33), Most Strikeouts in a Career (306), and Most Innings in a Season (117.2). In 1995, Fronabarger led the team with the lowest earned run average (1.97) and had an incredible 11-2 record. Fronabarger was drafted out of high school by the Toronto Blue Jays. In addition to his head coaching duties at Union, Fronabarger teaches in the Physical Education, Wellness, and Sport department. He and his wife Sandy have two sons, Brady and Landry.

The Union University Bulldogs enter the 2012 season with high expectations. Last season the Bulldogs posted a 38-17 overall record and a 16-8 record in conference play. Union enters this season as the defending TranSouth Conference champions. The Bulldogs received a No. 14 preseason ranking in NAIA and are picked to finish second in the TranSouth.
season outlook
The Bulldogs lost five top players to graduation, including two starters. Head coach Brent Fronabarger and first time assistant coach Justin Hogan have assembled a talented group of players, including nineteen returning players and seven newcomers. The Bulldogs will be led by the largest class on the roster. The senior class is made up of eleven players, including R.J. Rayborn, Kian Jost, Clint Barnes, Danny Grimm, Doug Joyce, Brett Pawlan, Tim Anderson, Jeremey Stack, Will Irvin, and Justin Bryan. Ten of the eleven are all returners and nine started a majority of Union’s games last season. Joyce was named NAIA Preseason All-American and was named to the first team all-conference and received gold glove honors last season. Stack was also named to the first team all-conference. Grimm received gold glove honors for his defensive play last season. Barnes played in 51 of Union’s 55 games and will lead the outfield in center. Jost started 45 games in the outfield for the Bulldogs and will see a significant amount of playing time in 2012. Rayborn is a returning second baseman. Pawlan returns after leading the Bulldogs in stolen bases with 18. Anderson returns for his third season, having provided quality backup at the catching position. Bryan will redshirt this year after pitching in eleven games last season. Irvin will be an influential part in the Bulldog pitching rotation after transferring from Auburn University. The junior class is made up of seven players, five of whom are returning. Derek Roof, Benjie Fesmire, Cole McAdams, David Leisey, and Jared Davis all return from the 2011 season. Two newcomers join the junior class, including Kody Pinson and John Reed. McAdams returns after being named to the second team allconference and receiving gold glove honors. Davis returns as a top pitcher for the Bulldogs and was named to the first team all-conference last season. Roof returns and will see a significant amount of playing time on the mound. Fesmire played in twelve games last season and will be called on to pitch and play second base. Leisey played in two games and will contribute to the pitching rotation. Four sophomores make up the Bulldog roster. Kyle Bryan, Wacey Russell, and Colin Hatch are all returners and Hunter Smith will begin his first season with the Bulldogs. Hatch redshirted last season, but will be called on to help in the pitching rotation. Bryan played in 32 games last season in the outfield. Russell appeared in 51 games and stole 14 of 17 bases and will contribute with his speed this season. The freshman class is made up of four players. Jacob Alexander, Logan Wall, Jim Martin, and Will Embry will start their college careers with the Bulldogs. Martin redshirted last season, but will be called on to provide depth at first base this season.

The purpose of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is to promote the education and development of students through intercollegiate athletic participation. Member institutions, although varied and diverse, share a common commitment to high standards and to the principle that participation in athletics serves as an integral part of the total educational process. The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recognizes the importance of the individuality of each member institution, the value of the conferences and Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) structure, and the benefits of membership in a national association. The NAIA supports gender equity. Gender equity is an atmosphere and reality where fair distribution of overall athletic opportunity and resources, proportionate to enrollment, are available to women and men, and where no student-athlete, coach or athletics administrator is discriminated against in any way in the athletics program. That is to say, an athletics program is gender-equitable when the men’s sports program would be pleased to accept as its own the overall participation opportunities and resources currently allocated to the women’s sports program and vice versa.
Advancing sport with innovative change
The NAIA has 50,000 student-athletes participating at nearly 300 member colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 25 conferences and the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.), the NAIA offers 23 championships in 13 sports. Since 1937, the NAIA has continued a long tradition of pushing the envelope and making a positive difference in the lives of students, coaches and parents. The Champions of Character program is the latest cutting-edge addition to the NAIA’s proud history of innovation (www.championsofcharacter.org). Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every studentathlete, coach, official and spectator are committed to the true spirit of competition through the five core values: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.
