GO
M A K E DIS CIPLE S
GO THEREFORE AND MAKE DISCIPLES... Making disciples is why we go. Making disciples is what we do. We share the Good News and teach others what Christ has commanded us.
“
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age. MATTHEW 28:19-20
”
Going is more than a matter of taking transportation to another location. Christians are always going, and we are about the work of making disciples in the process. Not only do we go across the street and make disciples of those who are closest to us; we also go throughout the world and make disciples of all nations. God graciously sent Christ into the world. He came to reveal the Father. Through Christ’s sacrificial life, death and resurrection, the peoples of the world may know God. The Apostle Paul said, “We are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” 2 Corinthians 5:20-21 Jesus said to his disciples, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” John 20:21 Through a GO Trip at Union University, students unite with other students, staff and faculty to join ministry partners throughout the nation and the world in the collective work of making disciples. Some GO Trips share the Gospel with those who have never heard. Others join the work of a church or a ministry organization to share in service or ministry. A Go Trip is a great way to join with others in being about the work of making disciples of all nations. GO.

Sharing and listening to each other’s testimonies and praying over one another was the most moving part of the trip. Through this experience, God opened our eyes to observe what community should look like.

The best aspect of the trip for me was having the opportunity to see Boston through the eyes of those working there. We were able to see the power of the gospel at work in the city.

The theme that kept repeating itself was that God has a calling for everyone’s life. If we are willing to listen, He will make that calling known. And if we will put our faith in Him, He will provide all we need.

I wept more over the lost than I remember ever having before, but through those moments I was reminded (both by the Lord and by some wise teammates) that I cannot save this city or turn people’s hearts to Christ. That is not my role here or in my life in general. It is God who calls, changes, and saves. He is the One who is at work – here and everywhere. My role is simply to sit at his feet, worship Him, and share His love with others out of the overflow of my own heart.

Even though we are different ages, from different cultures, and speak different languages, God didn’t let anything get in the way of what He wanted to do. I got to listen and share with my new friend as we talked about truth, prayer, and the future. I got to experience how real the unity of the body of Christ is across cultures.

As I struggled with my own inadequacy, it was so good to remember that this is His work, He will accomplish all of His purposes, and it is truly a gift and an honor when He works through us.

Our friend was hungry for the truth and listened attentively when we shared with her, but the enemy still has a grip on her heart. At one point she made a comment about the light coming into her bedroom window: “Sometimes the light disturbs me. It reveals too much.” This comment really struck me and I think it reflects the condition of her heart and mind. It is my prayer that He would deliver her out of the darkness and into His marvelous light.

We didn’t pour a big concrete driveway or build a house. There’s no physical thing that we left behind to prove to ourselves that it was worthwhile, but we got the chance to walk in obedience.
