Without harsh chemicals and tedious upkeep, these pools are a sustainable backyard trend making waves in the luxury realm.
Natural swimming pools, otherwise known as NSPs, are aquatic marvels that are redefining the concept of leisure and sustainability, promising a harmonious fusion of nature’s beauty and opulent relaxation. Powered by plants, they are the perfect addition to your private oasis.
As the name suggests, these beautifully constructed swimming areas are better for you and the environment than traditional chlorine pools. Originating from Europe, the NSP trend has slowly but surely picked up traction in the United States, due to the gorgeous designs and added sustainable benefits. Kate Miller, director at Natural Swimming Pools LTD, breaks down the need-to-know details of these
backyard additions and why the interest surrounding them continues to grow.
The rise of NSPs goes hand-in-hand with the increased awareness regarding the impact of harsh chemicals on our bodies and the planet. One of the major benefits of an NSP, according to Miller, is that they don’t require chemicals such as chlorine, which is known for drawing natural oils from our skin and hair, leaving them both rough, damaged, and dry. “You will be swimming in pure water, with no smell or irritation to the skin/eyes,” explains Miller. “The health benefits of swimming are well known, and without any harmful chemicals, natural pools are safe for humans, pets, and wildlife.”
Instead of chlorine, NSPs rely on aquatic

plants or a biological filter to keep them clean and clear through more natural filtration processes. In an aquatic ecosystem, phosphorus controls the pace at which algae is produced, so controlling phosphorus levels is a key component of upkeep. Miller explains the general science behind NSPs in simple terms: “A natural
swimming pool relies on biological filtration, where impurities are filtered out and bacteria removed,” she says. The plants naturally remove bacteria from the water. “In a pool with no plants, a filter will [remove] phosphorus from the water,” says Miller. A biological filter extracts naturally occur-

-ring contaminants and beneficial bacteria is left behind to help cleanse the water on a molecular level. Because of the natural filtration, regular dosing or testing is not required and it’s not necessary to empty the pool after the initial fill. Overall, the maintenance for an NSP is minimal when compared to a regular pool. “We recommend two services per year for our pools, plus there is some small ongoing maintenance to be done in between. The steps are very simple, but it is important that it is done regularly to maintain the pool at its best,” says Miller.
The list of pros for NSPs continues on, with nearly limitless designs attracting clients. A natural pool can be indoors or outdoors, designed to look like a seamless part of the natural landscape or to resemble a conventional pool, giving a great deal of creative freedom to those looking to perfect the aesthetic of their outdoor oasis. “They are building something that will work with nature, not harm it,” says Miller. “Each one of our pools is specifically designed for the landscape it is sitting in. The possibilities are endless and there are options for features and lighting to further enhance the design. It is really important to us that we design a pool to work in its environment.” Landing on a design that works with the landscape is the key consideration for the company.
In the hot summer months, the only thing that feels more luxurious than stepping into a beautifully designed swimming pool is stepping into a beautifully designed, heated swimming pool. Just like ordinary pools, NSPs can be heated with pumps, sunshine, or by utilizing floating solar panels or a dark-colored cover to absorb the heat from the sun.
Given the endless benefits NSPs offer, the trend is showing no signs of fading. Undoubtedly, the popularity of NSPs revolves around convenience and how they cater to sustainable needs. NSPs provide a serene solution for luxury homeowners who want to live a more sustainable life, and long for an ultra-unique or scenic backyard escape. This alternative swimming option also resolves the need for endless pool maintenance and harsh chemicals that can be harmful to the environment. Those who already own traditional in-ground swimming pools can make the switch to NSP without undergoing major reconstruction, as regular pools can easily be converted into NSPs.
As stunning as a high-end NSP can appear, Miller pinpoints the difference in water quality as being the true luxury. “To be able to swim in a naturally filtered pool is a wonderful experience,” Miller says. “Pools with plants offer the added benefit of being a year-round water feature.” A natural source of water is a highly desired amenity in the luxury realm and natural swimming pools create that possibility. ♦

“The design of Etéreo allows each of our rooms to have ocean-facing views, with easy access to the beach,” explains Vinod Narayan, Etéreo general manager. “The design is to give the impression that the hotel is hovering above the mangroves, which has allowed for all of our heart-of-the-house operations to reside under the guest areas.”
The resort’s on- and off-site experiences

Since opening in December 2021, Etéreo has gained a dedicated following. Narayan observes, “Our returning guests tend to be those looking for three- to five-day escapes. They are either a couple looking for some quality time together or families with young kids. Our target audience at the resort is searching for something intimate enough that everything is reachable within a five-minute walk, but, at the same time, has enough hidden spots for people to have moments to be able to detach.”
