EDITOR’S LETTER

There is something so inspiring about a change in season. No matter where you live, there is a significant shift, and almost as soon as the calendar flips to September, you can feel it. Sometimes it’s as simple as feeling the heat of summer slipping away while crisp, cooler breezes start to blow in. It’s pulling out your favorite sweater, starting a fresh school year, watching football, pumpkin everything, and planning for the holidays. Many people feel invigorated by each new season, which can feel like a reset on the year.

Here at Unique Homes, we are fortunate to be inspired daily. It could be hearing about the generous endeavors of the luxury real estate community, such as the work being done with groups like The Sunshine Kids Foundation, to more individual giving. It’s the creative people and places we cover in our blogs and stories, and the artistry and innovation we see in each unique home’s design.

Inspiration is everywhere, and it is triggered by something different for each of us. It could be living on the fairways (page 28), having a one-of-a-kind cup of coffee or a 23-karat-gold-enhanced milkshake (page 16), or finding “doorstep adventures,” the experiences that feed your soul, right in your own home (page 26).

No doubt such adventures are available en masse at the magnificent residence on our cover. Surrounded by breathtaking views of the Pacific, Villa Elia Bel Air marries serenity with state of the art amid its nearly 30,000 curated square feet. Stunning indoor and outdoor living spaces, numerous water features, and cutting-edge technology combine at this estate. For more, please see pages 9-11.

Until next time …

This grand-scale sanctuary was carefully crafted over the span of a decade, with its design boasting a rich combination of earthy tones, imported travertine floors, Riviera Bronze steel windows and doors, and split-faced limestone exteriors against exquisite vistas of Bel Air's lush landscape, the Pacific Ocean, Palos Verdes and Catalina.

warmth and comfort. The main-level living spaces seamlessly integrate with the outdoors via expansive sliding glass doors. All of these elements graciously harmonize to create a welcoming and tranquil ambiance.

Interior designer Errol Dejager helped create a home designed for sophisticated living and top-notch entertaining. UNIQUE DISCOVERIES

From lavish products to exclusive destinations, here are four unparalleled finds

that are bound to inspire.

Record-Breaking Cuisine: Serendipity3

Established in September 1954, Serendipity3 has delighted customers with its unique dishes for nearly 70 years. The restaurant on New York City’s Upper East Side “captivates its customers with rich history, whimsical ambiance, and innovative offerings,” says chef Joe Calderone, the creative director of the spunky restaurant.

Menu items such as the iconic Frrrozen Hot Chocolate — a secret blend of 14 exotic cocoas — draw people from all over the world for a sip of its creamy, dreamy, icy goodness. The Quintessential Grilled Cheese Sandwich is celebrated as the most expensive grilled cheese, and the LUXE Milkshake with 23-karat edible gold and Devonshire luxury clotted cream, was deemed one of the most opulent milkshakes in the world.

For decades, celebrity guests have elevated the restaurant to a must-see, cultural landmark. With vibrant hues and bold decor, “the restaurant attracts adults eager to reconnect with their inner child, evoke nostalgia, and savor delectable, one-of-a-kind dishes,” claims Calderone.

Brilliant Brews: Black Ivory Coffee

Black Ivory Coffee stands out as some of the most unique coffee on the market, priced at $3,000 per kilo. The tale of this sensational beverage began about a decade ago in Thailand, where founder Blake Dinkin observed disgruntled coffee farmers whose land had been destroyed by elephants. He was inspired to turn this human-elephant conflict from a negative into a positive, and the seed for Black Ivory Coffee was planted.

Dinkin’s goal was to “create a luxury beverage that actually helps rather than hurts elephants.” When you purchase Black Ivory Coffee today, you’re not only enjoying a unique brew, but also supporting the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation and the families who care for these majestic animals. “At the end of the day, I’m trying to create a memorable experience for people,” Dinkin explains.

According to Woodhead, the company’s goal is “to guide people on a personal journey to the last true wilderness and most remote place on Earth.” The South Pole and Emperor Penguins Adventure is one of the most luxurious and rare experiences available in the world.

UNIQUE LOCATION

Casa Orgánica in Juárez, Mexico

Javier Senosiain goes beyond the limits of traditional property design with this organic house.

Prepare to toss away the preconceived notions you may have about property design. Unique Homes is exploring Casa Orgánica, an unforgettable abode just outside Mexico City that is far different from the norm. At first glance, this property appears to be growing directly from the natural landscape. However, this is explained by the specific design, which aims to harmoniously blend every element of the home, including the interior rooms, exterior gardens, and even the residents.

This architectural masterpiece was designed by renowned architect Javier Senosiain, who also lived on the property with his family and extensively studied ferrocement, the moldable, elastic material used to build the home. He explains, “Part of the main aim and concept of Casa Orgánica was to return to the origin of things and to conceive of man as an animal, whose home can shelter him as it adapts to the human body, just like animals build their shelters, which adapt to their bodies.”

This sentiment is evident from the moment you first view the property, with its striking shape that is reminiscent of a shark, and the lush surrounding natural environment. Here, the garden and the roof are one, as the landscape even extends over the main home. According to Senosiain, the roof garden creates “a microclimate on which the vegetation filters the dust and carbon dioxide,” and is “a great thermal and acoustic insulator.”

Inside, the harmony between nature and the home continues to flow. The sand-colored floors and walls are chromatic and are meant to evoke the feeling of entering the earth. “The purpose of Casa Orgánica,” Senosiain explains, “was to merge the furniture with the house to call to mind both primitive and vernacular architecture. The idea was to avoid frames, paintings, and objects, leaving only furniture and space.” Combining these free-form aspects with breathtaking views from every window and the clever use of natural lighting, creates a truly unique space.

the ExperienceLiving

The physical characteristics of a residence are important, but homes that truly resonate with buyers provide the experiences they crave.

Discussions of luxury residential properties often focus on a grand scale, the contributions of celebrity interior designers, and, naturally, highly coveted locations. But homes are intrinsically personal and it is the experiential, rather than the physical confines, that truly defines luxury.

Whether it involves an ability to host worldclass culinary events, the integration of art and culture, or replicating a five-star resort spa, a home’s experiences can elevate the space. “Designing luxury homes offers the thrill of transforming clients' dreams into reality,” reports architect William Mungall, partner at Los Angeles-based Landry Design Group (LDG), a firm responsible for acclaimed residences around the world. “From dedicated art galleries and sculpture installations to car displays, champagne rooms to walk-in jewelry vaults, the possibilities are endless,” says Mungall.

Michael Nourmand, president of Nourmand & Associates, a prominent Beverly Hills real estate firm, reports, “Luxury buyers are using their homes as entertainment hubs, creating memories with friends and family.” He indicates that experiential spaces — amenities such as state-of-the-art screening rooms, pools, and elaborate gyms — are priorities.

Doorstep Adventures

For many, experiential luxury is the integration of a home into a spectacular natural environment, ensuring immediate access to outdoor adventures. Panoramic views may not be enough to satisfy buyers looking for inspiration, but an immersion into nature — allowing them to literally step out their doors to ski, hike, or sail — transforms views into experiences.

At Moonlight Basin in Big Sky, Montana, owners of contemporary, architecturally acclaimed homes enjoy world-class skiing, hiking, fly fishing, and horseback riding steps from their doors.

“Thoughtfully designed by Olson Kundig, floorto-ceiling windows bring the outdoors inside with expansive vistas and radiant sunlight,” says Ania Bulis, vice president of sales and founding broker of The Big Sky Real Estate Co. “When you’re ready to venture outside, miles of trails and activities provide an immediate connection to nature.”

Luxury meets rusticity outside Park City, Utah, where Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Utah Properties recently offered an 8,800-squarefoot luxury log cabin on 160 acres in the gated community of Wolf Creek Ranch. The $12.5 million property (sale pending) offers immediate access to nature's wonders. Listing agent Matt Mullin states,

“This luxury cabin is minutes from the Deer Valley ski runs and borders the Uinta National Forest,” adding, “Endless family adventures await in all seasons.”

Wining & Dining

The “heart of the home” can be an inspiration for creativity and hospitality. Passionate gourmands seek kitchens and wine cellars that can accommodate appearances by celebrity chefs or renowned winemakers. Jaw-dropping appliances like La Cornue stoves (customized models with all the bells and whistles can exceed $500,000) do not just add prestige, but soul to a kitchen. FAIRWAY LIVING

Golf properties have long been a symbol of the luxe lifestyle, and the demand remains strong among affluent buyers.

The allure of homes set against stunning golf courses is not difficult to decipher. The game alone entices many. Joe Rentfro, managing director at Loraloma and Thomas Ranch, explains that golf appeals to a wide demographic because of the social aspect and the connection to nature. “It fosters a healthy sense of competition, improving concentration, and forcing your brain to focus and get in sync with your body,” he says. The combination of the game and luxury homes continues to charm the masses.

Is there a demand for golf properties? Shelly Mitchell Lynch, broker and managing director at Carmel Realty Company, which just closed on the highest-priced sale in Pebble Beach history on the 18th hole of the world-renowned course, says yes. “Golf is an anchor attraction in the area.” The lifestyle is active and social, which makes these properties highly coveted. Brock Mackenzie, luxury real estate advisor for Silverleaf Realty, explains that it’s not uncommon to see waitlists for courses and clubs, and while the supply of golf listings in Arizona has stayed relatively flat, “the demand has risen in the last four or five years.”

Are golf properties a solid investment? The interest in this beloved sport is well established, and the limited inventory and strong demand create desirable opportunities. “The growth in value over the last 20 years has been huge, and we have every reason to believe that will continue based on the exceptional demand of this area,” says Lynch.

Top & Right: Loraloma residences have easy access to a course crafted by internationally renowned

Exclusivity, privacy and amenities. Typical properties include luxurious clubhouses, spa and wellness areas, fine dining options, and more to cement their elite statuses. In addition, “exclusivity and privacy tend to go hand in hand with golf properties and high-net-worth individuals,” says Mackenzie. Homes near the course are also an opportunity to embrace community. Mackenzie adds, “Not only do you have a network in your neighborhood, but also a whole social network of people who are members at the club.”

What are buyers looking for? “Location and access to great golf are the most important features,” notes Lynch. “If the buyer is a true enthusiast, things like a putting green or an indoor simulator would be a big attraction.” David McLayKidd, principal at DMK Golf Design, emphasizes the desire for simplicity and ease of use from buyers. “Folks I speak to are generally not looking for something large and complex, but rather a beautiful and understated property with ease of use for a family.”

uiet luxury’s influence is undeniable, reshaping everything from architecture to travel. Inspired by this trend, Homes & Estates delves into the true meaning of living in harmony. What fosters your sense of tranquility? How do you cultivate mindfulness and create meaningful experiences? How does understated elegance manifest in your living space and wardrobe?

Each story is an exploration of a harmonious lifestyle free from excess.

In “Harmony in the Home,” we talk to the architects who are designing homes around the concept of breath – the idea of “a space where you have room for breathing between materials and composition,” explains Spanish architect Aránzazu González Bernardo, one half of the creative duo behind Odami Design Studio. This desire for calm and restorative spaces has also led to a surge in décor and lighting products that promote tranquility.

Few materials in the home embody quiet luxury as beautifully as natural stone, explored in our feature “Stunning Stone.”

Next, our cover story takes you on a journey to the ultimate manifestation of quiet luxury – a 3.25-acre Seattle architectural marvel overlooking the Salish Sea. Completed in 2015, “The Bluff,” as its called, proves that luxury and environmental responsibility can indeed coexist.

Of course, harmony can be sought beyond the walls of home too. As Marlene Ridgway covers in “Quiet Luxury on the Runway,” the fashion world continues to debut timeless pieces that exude a sense of class without embellishments. Our travel feature whisks you away to the “Island of the Gods,” better known as Bali, where a mix of posh wellness resorts, nature, and a culture rich with warmth and spirituality captivates mindful travelers year after year. Finally, “Steering Through History” reminds us that even in the face of rapid technological advancements, we can never replicate the timelessness of a restored vintage car.

Throughout this issue, we invite you to discover your ideas of what living in harmony means. Read the stories, and let the extraordinary properties we’ve curated inspire you to create a lifestyle that whispers rather than shouts the most authentic expression of you.

he Bluff” offers an unparalleled blend of luxury and tranquil seclusion, complete with breathtaking panoramic views of the Salish Sea. “What defines 4315 W Semple Street is its status as the most incredible offering in Seattle,” says Darius Cincys, Coldwell Banker Bain Global Luxury Property Specialist. “The property’s privacy and integration with nature create a serene, remote-like atmosphere, yet it is conveniently close to downtown Seattle and essential amenities. This unique blend of luxury, seclusion, and proximity to urban conveniences makes it truly unparalleled.”

Situated on a low bluff pervading over 3.28 lush acres, the total estate boasts 18,823 square feet of living space and 293 feet of direct beachfrontage. The main residence was crafted in 2015, thoughtfully integrated directly into the hillside, providing residents with ultimate privacy. A separate guesthouse was added in 2018, offering solitude and flexibility for extended family, guests, or rental income, further enhancing the estate's appeal.

The abundant greenery that enriches the landscape fosters an incomparable, serene atmosphere. “Meticulously designed to blend seamlessly with the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest, mature trees, wildflowers, a 100-plus-year-old apple orchard, and native vegetation are thoughtfully incorporated, creating a harmonious environment that feels both cultivated and organic,” says Cincys. “The living roofs, adorned with a variety of plants, further enhance the property’s eco-friendly appeal.” The beauty of the rich landscape and endless water views can be savored from the home’s expansive outdoor spaces.

Serenity persists inside the home with soaring ceilings and expansive windows that allow natural light to flood the generous spaces. The use of natural materials, including board form concrete, structural steel, and reclaimed beetle-kill pine creates a perfect balance of modern, yet warm aesthetics. “One of my favorite rooms is the light-filled

dining room, complemented by a beautiful living wall,” says Cincys. “This space seamlessly opens up to the outdoor courtyard, creating an incredible indoor-outdoor ambiance ideal for entertaining. It’s truly the most impressive dining room I’ve ever seen, blending natural beauty with luxurious design.”

The eight-bedroom, 10.5-bath haven is brimming with remarkable amenities, including the kitchen, which can be best described as a chef’s dream that’s ideal for hosting. Other features include the expansive great room, showcasing resplendent views of the bay and Olympic mountains, a home theater, an indoor lap pool, and a jacuzzi. Sustainable features include the home’s solar array, green roofs, and a ground source heat and cooling system.

Throughout the home, guests will find unique salvaged elements such as a one-of-a-kind, multi-hinged front door fabricated from a decommissioned airplane wing and a doorbell fashioned from a scuba tank. “The house is full of surprises — from an internal slide to a large wall panel that swings open to access a wine tunnel leading to another secret door and cliffside hideaway,” says Cincys. Another surprise is a fireplace originally owned by the family of former President Franklin Roosevelt and the First Lady. In addition, the estate was built on a former orchard and home that was once owned by the daughter of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt.

E Blissful Bali

The very mention of Bali awakens an exotic wanderlust, and the Indonesian island offers an addictive blend of mystique, wellness, and quiet luxury.

xotic and mysterious , slightly forbidding yet hypnotically alluring, Bali, Indonesia has emerged as a popular destination, not just for rugged trekkers escaping civilization, but for luxury travelers seeking a more relaxed, sympathetic version of civilization. Posh resorts emphasizing health and wellness are ideal base camps for exploring a rich, inviting culture and an island of mesmerizing natural beauty.

Travel journalist Stephanie Brookes — her book “Indonesia’s Hidden Heritage” reveals the rich culture of Bali — reports that the Balinese people greatly contribute to making the island a special destination. “They’re warm and always smiling, and the Balinese culture is ever-present here,” says Brookes, who notes the island exudes a profound aura of spirituality. “There’s a genuine caring of the people and they share their culture so openly with everyone,” says the Bali-based writer. Brookes suggests hotel guests should take advantage of tours to nearby villages, markets, and holy temples, consider taking cooking classes, and venture out to lesser-known locales to fully immerse themselves in the culture.

Kensington Tours provides high-end adventures around the world, including bespoke itineraries throughout Indonesia. “Bali offers a magical spirituality that brings a sense of peace and serenity, creating a connectedness that’s missing in the Western world,” reports Jennifer Gardner, a product manager at Kensington,

specializing in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. “In this day and age, peace and tranquility equal luxury,” she adds. Edita Sgovio, Kensington’s vice president of yachts and villas, agrees that the island exudes a subtle luxury that is exceedingly rare, citing the presence of resorts that blend in with the environment while still offering super-premium amenities. “In Bali, luxury is not so much in your face, but quieter and more understated,” says Sgovio.

“Places like Cannes and St. Tropez are beautiful, but Bali definitely leaves its mark on you,” says Sgovio, reporting that yacht enthusiasts who have already conquered the Caribbean and Mediterranean are drawn to the more exotic destination of Bali. Kensington Yachts, with access to more than 3,000 vessels, offers bespoke sailing experiences in Indonesia and around the globe. Sgovio states, “We begin by finding the perfect vessel tailored to our clients’ needs. Then, we go above and beyond by creating all other aspects of the yacht experience.” Those Kensington voyages can be paired with private jet transportation and

insider access to highly sought-after attractions, shopping, or dining.

Aman Resorts around the world are renowned for providing ample luxury while leaving nary an imprint on the precious ecosystems they share. In Bali, the company operates Amankila, a serene coastal resort, as well as Amandari, a retreat on the Ayung River. Immersion into local cultures is a signature of the brand, and Jann Hess, Aman’s regional director of Indonesia, says of both Bali properties, “Having the chance to connect with Balinese culture is a highlight for many guests.” Hess reports that Amankila occupies a remote area of Manggis, East Bali, known for its breathtaking views, both on land and undersea. “Guests at Amankila are typically more adventurous, with interests in outdoor activities such as hiking, trekking, kayaking, snorkeling, and diving,” explains Hess. Amandari, whose design was inspired by a Balinese village, enjoys a close relationship with nearby residents who share their culture with guests, offering daily rituals, ceremonies, and cultural classes on the property.

A Morning Serenity experience at Amandari includes a privateguided Melukat (water purification) at Tirta Empul Temple before the shrine is open to the public. “This offers a unique and rare chance for our guests to explore the temple at dawn,” says Hess. Consistent with Aman’s approach worldwide, both properties feature curated wellness experiences that draw on the energy of the island and its local traditions. A Purifying Spiritual Journey package at Amankila includes daily spa treatments, as well as blessings or ceremonial rituals at some of Bali’s most sacred sites. Hess states, “Each of our properties in Bali tells a unique story and encapsulates the spiritual and cultural nature of the island.”

Six Senses is another collection of luxury resorts throughout Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, and its guests appreciate the brand’s emphasis on sustainability and wellness without sacrificing comfort. In Bali, Six Senses Uluwatu is an eco-conscious coastal property located on the southernmost tip of the island, close to the sacred Hindu temple of Pura Uluwatu. If the idyllic location fails to make guests feel grounded, a visit to the resort’s Zen-like spa surely will, and while the cuisine is sophisticated and indulgent, chefs showcase the healthy fundamentals of Balinese cooking.

“Six Senses Uluwatu integrates authentic Balinese culture through local greetings, traditional foods, and the Tri Hita Karana [loose

translation: “three causes of well-being”] philosophy in its design,” reports general manager Adnan Yücel. He notes the cliffside property, featuring serene suites and villas amidst lush vegetation, embodies local spirituality. “The wellness programs at Six Senses Uluwatu focus on quiet luxury with yoga, meditation, traditional Balinese and modern treatments, and the tranquil spa design is centered around flowing water,” says Yücel of the resort’s health and well-being priorities.

Opulent beachfront resorts draw most luxury travelers to Bali, but some prefer the seclusion of a private villa. Kensington Tours’ Sgovio suggests luxury villas provide travelers with the ultimate opportunity to fully escape. “Our clients are working year-round and want the peace, privacy, and serenity that even a luxury resort can’t offer,” she says. “At a villa, guests can have their own masseuses and yoga instructors, a private chef, even a driver who can organize unique experiences.”

Elite Havens currently lists more than 150 Balinese villas, many with exclusive chefs and drivers, even security details. This option is ideal for luxury travelers seeking complete escapism, enjoying yoga on a completely private beach, and consuming a sumptuous cuisine of their choice with nobody but their own hand-picked companions. The villas’ architecture varies from traditional Balinese design to sleek contemporary aesthetics and generally accommodates

extended families or groups of friends.

Among the luxury villas offered by Elite Havens is the Shanti Residence — the name means “peace” in Sanskrit — that offers elegant Balinese-inspired architecture in the Nusa Dua hills overlooking the Indian Ocean. In addition to seven private bedroom suites, common areas for dining and entertainment are enhanced with high-end finishes and custom furnishings from local artisans. A 50-foot infinity-edge pool with ocean views is the centerpiece of the lushly landscaped grounds.

Accommodations at the Ayana Resort, a luxury cliff-top property in Bali, range from oceanfront suites to a collection of 78 private villas — one is a sprawling estate encompassing about 30,000 square feet — with 24/7 butler service. Ayana is acclaimed as a wellness retreat that utilizes the talents of Bali’s finest fitness instructors and healers. In addition to meditative yoga amidst a stunning Jimbaran Bay backdrop, spa guests enjoy

the largest seawater thalassotherapy pool of its kind in Southeast Asia, harnessing the naturally soothing properties of the sea.

For travelers who wish to explore beyond the confines of exclusive resort properties, there is an authentic, largely untouched Bali well worth discovering. In addition to incredible surfing at Padang Padang (the “Balinese Pipeline”) or whitewater rafting on the Ayung River, visitors can tour rice paddies to view some of the last remaining pink water buffalos working the fields. Ambitious hikers can ascend volcanic Mount Batur, one of the island’s highest peaks, offering spectacular views of Bali. And while the dining rooms at chic resorts may turn out exceptional food, so do the street vendors Indonesia is famous for. These unpretentious cooks offer authentic renditions of babi guling (whole roasted pig), fish head soup, and peanut pancakes known as terang bulan. Bali continues to beguile those who venture beyond the predictable and comfortable.

Stunning Stone

From exquisitely crafted tiles to bespoke furniture, stone elements embody enduring beauty and timeless craftsmanship.

Leaning towards minimalism yet exuding warmth in their radiant mass, stone elements offer not just visual appeal, but a sense of repose, shaping a home into a serene enclave of quiet luxury — the latest trend in high-end interior and exterior design. However, “trend” may be a misnomer for an emphasis on the timeless, primordial, and elemental. As Deborah Osburn, founder of Clé Tile House and a pioneer of quiet luxury, explains, “It’s an alternative luxury: a new — but also old — way of thinking about our environments and the things that surround us.”

THE PRODUCT OF MILLENNIA

Clé, a leader in the artisanal tile movement in the U.S., “embraces quiet luxury as a way of living and feeling in a space, rather than just a specific look,” shares Osborn. Known for their expressive materials like Moroccan zellige, artisan cement, and Italian cotto tiles, Clé elevates natural stone tile into high art.

The company's approach through stonework emphasizes the authentic nature of the materials, the artisans behind them, and the rich heritage and history there, “we encourage design that respects and makes the most of stone’s character and origin. Stone is formed over millennia through almost unimaginable forces,” says Osborn. By meticulously selecting and working with each stone, Clé ensures that its stone tiles retain the raw, unrefined beauty that nature intended.

The Lapidary collection, inspired by the renowned Italian architect Carlo Scarpa, showcases a range of rounded and fluted linear stone tiles, smooth-cut ovals, and roughcut mosaics. Each piece in this collection is a testament to Scarpa’s vision, a quietly classic homage to the elegance of the 1970s in Milan. These tiles are more than just decor; they are sculptural elements that add depth and character to any space.

The Strata Linea collection focuses on sustainability and creative reuse. Architectdesigned, this collection repurposes stone remnants from architectural projects in the Eastern Mediterranean into elegant tile planks. A wall of Strata Linea tiles imbues a room with the quiet awe of discovery wandering through the serene backstreets of Essaouira or Yaffo. Sold in sets, these tiles reflect a broader ethos of valuing longevity and minimizing ecological footprints. They not only reduce waste, but also tell a story of transformation and renewal.

“We take our lead from nature’s blueprint, emphasizing the quiet beauty of stone, bronze, copper, wood, bamboo, and iron.”

NATURAL SANCTUARIES

Stone Forest, founded by Michael Zimber in 1989, seamlessly blends enduring natural materials with the serene beauty of the wilderness in these fixtures. Zimber’s journey with stone and water began in his early twenties as a climbing and river guide. Fascinated by the rock cliffs he scaled, he began sculpting stone in his spare time.

After a decade of guiding, he sought a new way to bring the essence of nature into people’s homes, and Stone Forest was born. Today, the company comprises artisans and designers dedicated to incorporating the elegant simplicity of natural materials into baths, kitchens, and outdoor sculptures. “We take our lead from nature’s blueprint, emphasizing the quiet beauty of stone, bronze, copper, wood, bamboo, and iron,” Zimber explains.

Stone Forest’s unique collection of bathroom and kitchen fixtures is carved from blocks of natural stone sourced from quarries worldwide, including marble, basalt, travertine, onyx, and limestone. Each sculptural piece is a testament to the essential energy and beauty of nature, “designed to evoke the expansive and restorative feelings of the outdoor world,” Zimber says. The meticulous craftsmanship highlights the inherent textures and colors of the stone, creating functional art that transforms everyday spaces.

The Papillon bathtub, a client favorite, is a perfect representation of quiet luxury: a commanding presence that is meticulously designed to elevate the space without overwhelming. Winnowed from solid blocks of stone and then refined with hammer and chisel, the Papillion evokes hidden forest pools and the whisper of wind over a silent rockface. The elegance embedded in the subtleties of craftsmanship and the natural beauty of the stone speaks volumes without shouting for attention.

ALLURING GEOMETRIES

The San Marco collection from New Ravenna is a tribute to the company’s Italian heritage and the timeless enchantment of Venice. Founded in 1992 by artist and designer Sara Baldwin, New Ravenna has established a reputation as the world’s most exquisite collection of custom stone and glass mosaics for both home and commercial installations.

Designer Jacquelyn Bizzotto shares, “I found myself reflecting on the skilled artisans who meticulously cut and laid each tessera to craft mosaics that have withstood the test of time.” The resulting collection interprets the craftsmanship of the lagoon city’s priceless Byzantine mosaics, alluring geometric designs, and the classic elegance of marble terrazzos, through a contemporary lens.

The San Marco collection embodies this philosophy of discreet sophistication, where serenity is found in the meticulous details and subtle elegance of each piece. The Luca and Caterina mosaics reimagine the tranquil seclusion of Venice’s secret gardens, uniting calming earth tones with organic shapes. The understated color palette — the gray nebbia of winter, the blue mist of the lagoon, and the subtle shimmer of the city’s ubiquitous gold silk — capture the essence of La Serenissima, Venice’s traditional name meaning "The Most Serene."

However, San Marco’s exploration of Venice goes beyond mere color and pattern. It honors the legacy of Venetian artisans, whose meticulous attention to intricate details and refined aesthetics forms the foundation of the city’s historical grandeur and enduring beauty. Effortlessly integrating classical mosaic techniques like handnipped stone with modern processes like waterjet cutting, the artistry behind the San Marco collection creates a harmonious

fusion. “When you see the gorgeous mosaics and pavimenti in Venice and realize they were made entirely by hand, you can’t help but be stunned at the work involved,” Bizotto shares. “San Marco continues this exceptional tradition.”

HEIRLOOMS WITH A TWIST

A first encounter with any piece from Zachary A. Design’s STONE collection is unforgettable. It’s not just because of the comfort — the modular settees are perfectly designed to cradle the body in repose — or the minimalist, monumental design that turns any yard or patio into a stone sculpture garden. Rather, it’s the sensory delight of perceiving a monolithic chair or table and being able to, as if by magic, lift it with a single hand. “They smile every time,” founder and designer Zachary Bitner shares, “It’s addictive.”

How does Bitner accomplish this sleight-of-hand? Each piece in the STONE collection is built from a thin shell of fiberglass reinforced concrete that is light yet durable. The incredibly stonelike textures are achieved through meticulously designed molds, influenced by Bitner’s familiarity with the raw texture of stone from

a decade working for a statue company. The furniture’s minimalist design, combined with its volumetric quality, makes it a standout in any outdoor space.

One of his notable pieces, the Wavebreaker, an ultra-minimal Adirondack chair, exemplifies Bitner’s unique blend of technique and innovation. The reference to the Adirondack chair — and all the quiet contemplation of looking out over the mountains or crackling waves — is featured in Bitner’s attention to clean lines and angles, holding the body just perfectly to admire the vista. And yet the nuanced shift from wood to stone makes Wavebreaker at once fresh and timeless: “It’s like its own thing. It doesn’t look like a normal chair or table; it looks like a piece of stone.”

For Bitner, quiet luxury is all about working with the environment instead of overwhelming it. Zachary’s pieces are designed to withstand the elements and are able to live outside indefinitely and be enjoyed year round. “When the snow falls on them, it creates these little discs of snow around these colorful pieces,” he shares. Their refined minimalist design and durability make them heirloom-quality additions to any outdoor space.

Across the luxury realm, a new trend has settled in and made its way into everything from paint colors to art, high-end products, interior designs, and inevitably onto the runway. Quiet luxury is a new take on minimalism and a pivot away from flashy materials, loud colors, and opulent displays of wealth. “Many traditional luxury brands have very clear and obvious prints that make their clothes instantly recognizable,” explains Vishal Bhogaita, the founder of Pomp Clothing, a sustainable clothing brand based in the United Kingdom. “This approach to fashion can seem ‘loud’ as it stands out, and so the phrase that gets repeated is ‘money screams, wealth whispers.’”

Fashion trends shift and reiterate as swiftly as the seasons change, but understated elegance, top-tier quality, and simple details are classic hallmarks of luxury.

In contrast, the latest luxury trend is highlighting premium materials, and unmatched craftsmanship, resulting in fashion pieces that simply exude sophistication and a sense of class without embellishments. The University of Fashion followed up recent festivities by publishing an article titled, “Quiet Luxury Stole the Show at New York Fashion Week Spring 2024,” affirming that this trend is just getting started.

THE ESSENCE OF QUIET LUXURY

Quiet luxury is perhaps the cause and effect of a tumultuous past few years and a natural progression from uncertain times during the pandemic. This discreet side of luxury fashion brings with it a sense of calm that we’ve all been craving. “Quiet fashion has always been popular, but as it goes hand in hand with discretion, it is not easy to notice and remark upon,” adds Bhogaita. “As popular TV shows, such as ‘Succession’ have brought this style of dressing to the mainstream, more people have become attracted to this approach.”

The hallmarks of quiet luxury consist of logo-free clothing, subdued tones, and refined materials, according to Bhogaita. Stealth wealth, another term linked to more subtle expressions of luxury, “is normally about muted colors such as beige, oat, and brown as well as variations of formal monochromes, such as ivory and cream.”

These hues often resemble more natural scenes, such as the lowprofile shade of gold in Giorgio Armani’s One-Shoulder Gown with Braided Detail. This dress displays small, elegant details against a soft but warm color that showcases the craftsmanship of the designer and turns heads without vying for attention. Other brands such as INNNA, Toteme, Peter Do, Jil Sander, and Khaite have also recently shared collections that utilize softer color palettes. Specifically, the KEENAN PANT W2969 yellow straw by The Row is a delicate shade that is elegant on its own. Another example is the gentle beige of the She is Capable Midi Dress by Victoria Bliss.

BRANDS TO KNOW

Standing out on the runway is ASKET, a Swedish brand that’s known for its ideology known as “The Pursuit as Less.” ASKET embodies the concept of the capsule wardrobe with timeless essentials that are designed to last. The brand’s focus is on perfecting a few key pieces rather than producing numerous collections each season. The idea of minimalism or quiet fashion is hardly a new concept. Linda Breen Pierce is the author of “Choosing Simplicity,” which relays her three-year evaluation of more than 200 people from various countries, who have experimented with simplifying their lives. “Simplicity

involves unburdening your life, and living more lightly with fewer distractions that interfere with a high-quality life,” says Pierce, as defined uniquely by each individual. The concept of less is more has once again made its way back into the luxury realm, though it’s no stranger, as we saw its immersion in the 1960s and its resurgence in the early 2000s.

Another recognizable brand, The Row, which was founded by the renowned Olsen twins, Mary-Kate and Ashley, perfectly demonstrates the essence of quiet luxury. The collections are recognizable, not by prominent logos, but rather by the clean lines, muted color palettes, and exquisite materials. From classic blazers to sumptuous knits, each piece is designed to be timeless and versatile, but also of a quality that can last for years.

BEYOND THE RUNWAY

The defining elements of quiet fashion extend beyond the runway. Interior designers, artists, furniture brands, and more are utilizing these characteristics to create spaces that are serene and

sophisticated. For example, Jordan Carlyle, founder and principal of Carlyle Designs, often incorporates these themes and elements in residential projects. Ashiesh Shah, the founder and creative director of Ashiesh Shah Architecture + Design in Mumbai, also practices a form of quiet luxury in his designs with natural materials and simple adornments.

Quiet luxury is a testament to the power of simplicity and quality, but also calls attention to sustainability. Bhogaita explains, “Other luxury brands that are hopping on the quiet luxury trend can easily replicate minimalist looks in muted colors. The tell that shows a company is merely a trend follower is that it does not use refined materials. You will find that it still uses synthetics or lower-quality cotton in its clothing.”

Trends are driven by all aspects of our lives. Bhogaita says, “Customers have been very supportive and appreciative of our focus on sustainable luxury fashion.” Sustainability, which often goes hand-in-hand with exclusive or one-of-a-kind pieces, continues to grow in popularity, especially in high fashion.

“Simplicity involves unburdening your life, and living more lightly with fewer distractions that interfere with a high-quality life.”
BELOW: INNNA epitomizes quiet luxury with designs that effortlessly blend professionalism and style, but remain comfortable.

Automobile manufacturers are racing into the future with new technologies, but lovingly restored vintage automobiles never go out of style.

There is an undeniable sense of romance associated with classic means of travel, whether it is the Orient Express winding through Europe, the maiden voyage of the Queen Mary, or a Pan Am 707 celebrating the Jet Age. But no mode of transportation is more relatable than the automobile, with now-defunct models serving as poignant footnotes to our lives. Collecting, restoring, and returning vintage cars to the road keeps treasured memories alive. Mark Hyman, founder of Hyman, Ltd., is a renowned dealer and collector of classic automobiles, serving a clientele of world-class collectors, celebrities, museums, and enthusiasts. “I have an affinity for pre-war coach-built French autos that are more like works of art than cars,” says Hyman of his personal tastes, who concedes the classic car business has much in common with the fine art market. His 70,000-square-foot showroom in St. Louis houses an inventory of approximately 200 premium vehicles that also includes European sports cars and 1950s-era American collectibles. Currently in stock is a rare 1929 Isotta Fraschini convertible sedan from one of Italy’s most revered manufacturers, offered for $725,000, while a 1953 Mercedes-Benz 300 Cabriolet D is priced at $325,000.

Throughout the last century, artistic expression has inspired automobile design as much as performance.
“My private collection is worth many millions of dollars, yet it’s not about the dollars, but the passion I have for those vehicles.”

In addition, Hyman, Ltd. quietly brokers automobiles valued from $2 to $5 million, the kind of rolling masterpieces worthy of prestigious Concours d’Elegance events around the world. “My private collection is worth many millions of dollars, yet it’s not about the dollars, but the passion I have for those vehicles,” explains Hyman, who still proudly possesses the 1937 Dodge pickup he restored at age 16. “Motivations of collectors vary, but usually a car represents an entry into a lifestyle,” explains Hyman, who notes that due to demographic shifts — people naturally purchase vehicles they can relate to — demand for recent-vintage models is increasing. Nonetheless, the exclusive dealer reports that the best pre-war cars are more valuable than ever, and advises that whatever category collectors focus on, they should buy the highest quality. Hyman observes, “Porsches have become a car of choice among collectors because they’re readily available and present a relatively easy way to get into the action.”

More than any city on the planet, Los Angeles grew up with the automobile, and car culture has shaped the development of the sprawling metropolis, from drive-in burger joints and theaters to housing tracts that continue to gobble up real estate. L.A.’s Petersen Automotive Museum pays homage to this love affair, exhibiting an impressive collection of vintage vehicles and automobilia. Leslie Kendall, the museum’s chief historian and a prominent authority on classic cars, reports that in L.A., collectors tend to focus on luxury brands, consistent with the status-conscious locals’ approach to car buying in general.

Insisting that younger people are equally enthusiastic about collecting as their older demographic counterparts, Kendall states, “Just because they don’t collect Packards and Duesenbergs doesn’t mean they aren’t passionate about cars.” Nostalgia drives most collectors, suggests Kendall, a contributor to the book “The Face of Change: Portraits of Automotive Evolution,” which examines the cultural, economic, and societal impacts of the industry. “Most collectors buy vehicles they admired in their youth, but couldn’t afford at the time, cars that take them back to happier days,” says the historian, who cautions people against letting potential investment returns overshadow passion as a motivation.

“Richard Dredge reports that Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Aston Martin are perennially in demand, but that Ferrari leads the pack. ‘I wrote a feature on the highest values at auction and found that in 20 auctions, a Ferrari earned the highest bid 17 times.’”

A regular contributor to auto magazines and buying guides, prominent U.K.-based automotive journalist Richard Dredge has authored 18 books, including his beautifully illustrated “Supercars: Masterpieces of Design and Engineering.” A collector himself, Dredge reports that Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Aston Martin are perennially in demand, but that Ferrari leads the pack. “I wrote a feature on the highest values at auction and found that in 20 auctions, a Ferrari earned the highest bid 17 times,” recounts Dredge. The aficionado notes that Mustangs and Corvettes are the most collectible American products and that some muscle cars are starting to attract seven-figure prices at auction. Dredge comments, “The cheaper the car, the more likely it’s bought for sentimental or nostalgic reasons, because there isn’t much investment potential; and the more valuable the car, the more likely it’s bought for investment purposes.” Many rare, ultra-expensive autos remain in storage because they are simply too precious to drive.

Dredge reports, “Over here, there was a lot of fear that the classic car scene was dying out. But thanks to social media, younger enthusiasts began starting groups and supporting one another.”

The journalist observes that not all young people are drawn to later-vintage automobiles, with some even attracted to pre-war models. As a restorer of his own classic cars, Dredge suggests, “At the lower end of the market, you have to home-restore to be able to get your money back, because professional restoration will cost you more than the value of the car.”

For some, automobile collecting and restoration is a means of expressing pride in American manufacturing, a nod to an era when the U.S. ruled the roads. To others, it is a way of honoring their own heritage. Lowriders — customized vehicles whose bodies are raised and lowered with special hydraulic systems — emerged in the 1940s and were originally a source of pride among Chicano car enthusiasts in Southern California. “The lowrider phenomenon is definitely not limited to L.A., as interest is now international and cross-cultural,” says Kendall, who notes the Petersen Museum currently has an extensive exhibit on display titled “Best in Low.”

The historian notes that lowriders are analogous to the hot rods of the 1950s and 1960s, in which the aesthetics of the autos reflected their owners’ personalities.

Barrett-Jackson is a premier auto auction company, and its Scottsdale, Arizona, event drew a record $207.6 million in sales last January, with a 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing attracting a winning bid of $3.41 million. “We continue to set the bar within the hobby with record-breaking sales like the 1956 300SL Gullwing, and our top sales reflect both the quality and diversity of our docket,” reports chairman and CEO Craig Jackson. The event also included a separate automobilia auction that netted $6.7 million, with the top price ($155,250) earned by a 1960s Cougar Oil service station sign. Like rare wine and fine art, classic automobiles can be promising investments, with Ferrari, MercedesBenz, and Porsche demonstrating reliable rates of appreciation. For aspiring collectors with limited budgets, several companies have begun offering fractional-ownership programs akin to those employed in the fine art and real estate markets. The duPont Registry Invest platform recently announced upcoming interests in a 1996 Ferrari F335 GTB at a modest $10 per share, representing a market capitalization of $295,000. This kind of offering democratizes a car-collecting marketplace that has long been reserved for multimillionaire hobbyists. The ultimate classic car event in the U.S. is the annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on California’s Pacific Coast. Last year, a 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster, one of just three similar cars surviving in the world, was awarded Best of Show. Concours chairman Sandra Button stated, “I was impressed by the time and thought invested in this restoration. Every piece of this beautiful Mercedes-Benz was researched so carefully to honor its history.” With its 2023 achievement, MercedesBenz pulled ahead of Bugatti for the greatest number of Best of Show honors at this revered event. Gooding & Company, the official auction house of Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, reported grossing over $92 million in sales at the last event, with an unrestored 1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta commanding a stratospheric $9.465 million.

Advances in electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, along with the emergence of self-driving cars, are creating a new Golden Age for the automobile, but appreciating what is in the rearview mirror will always bring nostalgic and financial rewards.

W Harmonyin the Home

The principles of quiet luxury are transforming everything from architecture to decor and lighting in opulent homes.

hen thinking of luxurious home designs , the focus is often on the physical structure — angles, lines, curves, unique features, and materials. However, according to Spanish architect Aránzazu González Bernardo and Canadian designer Michael Fohring, the creative duo behind Odami Design Studio in Toronto, the architectural harmony of quiet luxury offers a different perspective. It is centered around breath, creating “a space where you have room for breathing between materials and composition,” says Bernardo.

“We live in a time of overexposure in all kinds of spaces. We’re constantly bombarded with different materials, colors, and trends,” Bernardo explains. “Quiet luxury has the capacity to bring balance and harmony into your life.” Emphasizing tranquility and subtlety over grandeur and excess, Odami focuses on creating serene and sophisticated living spaces through clean lines, open spaces, and a seamless integration of indoor and outdoor environments

“We generally try to find a degree of richness in materials, so they have some depth and character. This balance between simplicity and texture allows the surfaces to come alive in a way that is both subtle and captivating.”

— transforming the home into a rejuvenating respite from the cacophony of contemporary life. “It’s about finding elegance in refinement and doing a little bit less, but being really thoughtful and intentional about it,” Fohring agrees.

Deer Park House

One of the defining characteristics of quiet luxury is the intentional use of highquality materials that have personality, in enough moderation to fully experience and appreciate them. Fohring says, “We generally try to find a degree of richness in materials, so they have some depth and character. This balance between simplicity

and texture allows the surfaces to come alive in a way that is both subtle and captivating.”

The Odami team found this perfect balance in their renovation of Deer Park House, a historical home in Toronto. Opening up the floor plan of the family areas while respecting the intimacy of the individual rooms on the upper floors, balanced the space with room to breathe and the aspects of a private retreat. New materials were incorporated to enhance the celebration of natural light inherent to the original architecture. “In the living and kitchen area, we used lime paint on the ceiling to interact dynamically with

natural light, changing the appearance throughout the day,” Fohring shares. Deer Park also showcases Odami’s use of natural materials and biophilic design elements — incorporating nature into the built environment — to further enhance the sense of tranquility and connection to the natural world. From the fluted white and gray-veined marble fireplace to honey-toned wood accents, Deer Park incorporates the warmth and timeless elegance of natural materials. “We’ve always tried to break down the barrier between exterior and interior, not just through landscaping, but by using natural materials that bring the outside

in,” Bernardo explains. This approach fosters a sense of continuity and harmony, making the interior spaces feel like a natural extension of the outdoors.

Collaboration is Key

Collaborations have become a way to effortlessly execute this growing trend. In London, Mylands has been mastering the art of finely pigmented paints with aspirational color depths since 1884. In their new collection, the company partnered with landscape designer Jinny Blom to create a palette of muted, earthy colors that reflect the subtle beauty of the natural world in both indoor and outdoor paint. Specializing in plant-based products, Mylands has collaborated with luxury builders and homeowners to achieve a seamless integration of indoor tranquility and natureinspired hues.

Mylands x Jinny Blom helps create environments that feel calm and restorative. “I was struggling to find the colors I needed for outside,” Blom explains. “In the Mediterranean, there are clear color palettes, but they don’t always work for the soft light and watery skies of the British Isles.” Using these high-quality paints, each tone exudes a rich depth of experience, setting a contemplative, relaxing mood in every room and bringing in the gentle light and hushed fogs of the British landscape.

Light and Reflections

The trend’s emphasis on slow, intentional relationships with objects and materials in the home is perhaps best experienced in Zieta Studio’s collections. This Polish design studio specializes

“Zieta’s creations are about forming a deeper relationship with natural light as it cascades across the surface, creating an ever-changing experience of the material and its reflections.”

in minimalist furniture, fixtures, and objects crafted from highly polished stainless steel. Yet Zieta’s creations are not just about enjoying sculpturally beautiful, meticulously crafted pieces of furniture or art. It’s about forming a deeper relationship with natural light as it cascades across the surface, creating an everchanging experience of the material and its reflections.

“Due to the surface’s uneven topography, light is refracted and diffused in various directions, generating a dynamic and visually stimulating display of color and texture — captivating and immersive installations that challenge the viewer’s perception of space and dimensionality,” explains Zieta spokesman, Rafał Ciemny.

The beauty of these reflections is a poignant reminder of the potential of design and the significance of meticulous attention to detail. These manifestations of light and color inspire a quest for further instances of beauty in the surroundings, elevating the space they inhabit.

Design as a Service to the Individual

One of the central principles of Odami Design is that harmonious architecture should serve the individual by creating spaces that allows them to escape the pressures of the outside world. The room or area might envelop individuals in serenity and understated opulence, prioritizing the emotional and psychological well-being of the occupants. “It’s more about finding a level of elegance in refinement and trying to do a little bit less. To be really thoughtful and intentional about how each home, each element, is going to be used and lived in,” says Fohring

In a palatial property in Asia designed by LDG, a portrait of Beethoven graces a music room well suited to string quartets or piano concerto recitals.

with showstopping wine cellars suitable for elite tastings. An Atherton, California, estate designed by LDG features a soaring cellar/tasting room whose two levels are theatrically separated by a see-through glass floor. In a classically inspired L.A. residence, LDG created a brick-accented, barrel-ceilinged wine cellar evocative of a Grand Cru château in Bordeaux. Representing a similar aesthetic is an 800-bottle cellar with triple barrelvaulted ceilings in a 16,600-square-foot home in Houston’s Tony River Oaks neighborhood, offered by Nan and Company Properties for $14.9 million.

Built-In Arts & Culture

Culturally immersive experiences may include virtual-reality rooms, sensory gardens, or home theaters. Elaborate screening rooms have long been de rigueur for studio execs in L.A., but are now essential to luxury lifestyles everywhere. Technology is transforming this amenity, reports Lisa Slayman, founder of Slayman Cinema, a firm that creates over-the-top home theaters. “Advanced technology has increased demand from luxury clients, as their private cinema rooms have become multi-entertainment spaces that accommodate esports, gaming, and multisport

simulators the whole family can enjoy,” says Slayman. In Dallas, a Neoclassical mansion offered by Allie Beth Allman & Associates for $40 million features a theater inspired by a Parisian opera house and an adjoining bar seating 22. In Bora Bora, Villa Aquamaris houses a 92,000-gallon aquarium – the largest private aquarium in the world – and is offered by Hurwitz James Company, for $52.5 million.

Maize, executive director of the Luxury Estates Division at Nourmand & Associates, reports, “There’s a growing trend towards personalized, culturally enriching home environments.” LDG integrated a jazz lounge with a circular stage and sculptural ceiling into a Northern California project whose stately façade might suggest a preference for classical music. In a palatial property in Asia designed by the firm, a portrait of Beethoven graces a beautiful music room well suited to string quartets or piano concerto recitals.

With expansive wall spaces and specialized lighting, “The Gallery Estate” in Beverly Hills, offered at $19.995 million by Nourmand & Associates, accommodates serious art collectors. Maize, the listing agent, explains, “The architectural layout includes designated gallery areas specifically designed to showcase artwork, creating a sophisticated environment where art can be the centerpiece of daily life.”

Location, Location, Location

Luxury homes naturally tend to be in extremely desirable destinations, which profoundly impacts their values. Some residences, however, are more directly defined by a unique or exotic destination, whether it be a private island or mountain retreat. The 10-acre, resort-like property occupies a pristine peninsula in Maui, a vision of serenity and privacy listed by Mary Anne Fitch

at Coldwell Banker Island Properties, for $30 million. For others, destination living means the wine country, where a hobby vineyard provides experiential opportunities beyond the sheer beauty of the idyllic countryside. Destinations are personal, and to some, a Manhattan high-rise with Central Park views is the ultimate experience.

Exertion & Restoration

A ranch in Aspen, offered at $46 million by Chris Klug Properties, is ideal for fitness buffs. The spread features a 15,943-square-foot indoor athletic facility with a regulation basketball court, tennis and racquetball courts, a swimming pool, game room, running track, and a professionally equipped gym. Equestrians will enjoy an eight-stall barn, paddocks, and large, polo-ready pasture.

For every expenditure of physical energy, there should be an equal investment in renewal and restoration, which makes in-home spas — few Beverly Hills or Hamptons estates are without one — essential indulgences. In a hillside L.A. home, LDG created a sleek, elliptically shaped marbleand oak-clad spa with elegant styling that would rival any five-star resort. Nourmand, a leader in the L.A. luxury real estate market, reports, “Buyers, especially celebrities, need a salon space for their stylist and hairdresser, as well as a room to get a massage … and, on occasion, a space for cosmetic surgery.”

Cruise Control

Car collectors typically seek out sprawling properties rather than condos. But the Porsche Design Tower in Sunny Isles Beach, Florida, where a 6,121-square-foot penthouse unit is offered for $14.95 million, was specifically designed for auto enthusiasts. Vehicles and their owners are rocketed skyward in state-of-the-art auto elevators, then parked in glass-clad exhibition “sky garages” adjoining each condominium. Reporting that the company’s next glitzy project is the equally car-crazy Bentley Residences, Gil Dezer, president of Dezer Development, states, “The design and ethos of these premier automobile brands are translated into the overall residential experience.” The Bella Vista Estate near Montecito, California, listed at $70 million by Aaron Kirman of Christie’s, is experiential on many levels, with a regulation-size polo field and disco/ballroom accommodating 200 revelers. For the car connoisseur, it offers an auto gallery that can showcase a collection of 32 vehicles.

Architecture for Sale

A home’s architecture, whether a farmhouse with centuries of history or a world-class expression of modernism, can be a profoundly experiential quality.

Some examples:

► Frank Lloyd Wright’s 1959 Norman Lykes House in Phoenix (his final residential project and vaguely reminiscent of the Guggenheim) is on the market for $8.95 million.

► One of New York's great Gilded Age mansions, a limestone Beaux-Arts townhouse on the Upper East Side, is currently offered at $58.5 million.

► The Galka Scheyer House by Mid-Century Modern master Richard Neutra, which looks as contemporary today as when it was constructed in 1934, recently sold for $3 million.

► Priced at $8.295 million, is a threebedroom condominium in Manhattan’s elegant, Neo-Gothic Woolworth Building, referred to as the “Mozart of Skyscrapers.”

► An 1883 Victorian residence on Harvard Square, listed for $9.995 million, is a celebration of vintage New England luxury.
