Still deciding on your next getaway? The picturesque city of Virginia Beach, Virginia, may offer everything you’re looking for in a destination and more. Susan Pender from Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices RW Towne Realty shares her local perspective on the best places to stay, play, dine, and relax in this oceanfront paradise.

Stay

Virginia Beach has many popular accommodations, including The Historic Cavalier Hotel & Beach Club, which originally opened in 1927. In terms of newer lodgings, Pender recommends the brand new, luxurious Moxy Virginia Beach Oceanfront hotel, which features both “smart rooms and stylish communal spaces” and is located right on the oceanfront. She also suggests the Bees Nees Pink House, which, as the name suggests, is an idyllic pink bungalow moments from the beach, “stylish and cozy, with a heated plunge pool.”

Dine

The restaurants in Virginia Beach all seem to take advantage of the natural beauty of the area. One of the newest and most exciting places, according to Pender, is The Porch on Long Creek, an American/ seafood establishment known as a prime spot for boat watching and taking in gorgeous sunsets. Pender also suggests another new destination not to miss is Oscar’s Oceanside, a fine dining location directly on the ocean.

Play

The region offers no shortage of compelling destinations. Pender recommends visiting the Military Aviation Museum just south of the city or venturing off the coast to enjoy a dolphin-watching boat tour. One of the newest places recommended by Pender is the ViBe Creative District. This area is “known for its trendy restaurants, museums, and brightly colored murals by local artists.”

Relax

When not unwinding on the beach, if you’re trying to find a nice spot to relax while in town, Pender says one of the best places to look is First Landing State Park, which is “known for its nice walking trails amongst the trees and along the water.” She also suggests taking a walk to see the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, which is 9,200 acres of protected wildlife land filled with an abundance of plants and animals.

Twenty years ago, fashionable options for outdoor living were limited, with unimaginative aesthetics and synthetic finishes dominating even high-end furnishings. But with sophisticated outdoor spaces now de rigueur in luxury residences, exciting new design solutions have emerged.

The trend was already accelerating, but demand for designer-quality products for exterior living spaces skyrocketed during the pandemic. Homeowners developed a greater appreciation for the outdoor spaces available to them— not just in mild climates, but across the nation. Amenities like fireplaces and chandeliers are making their way outside, while entire furniture lines are being redesigned to accommodate indoor-outdoor lifestyles.
