LIVING THE LAKE LIFE

By Jamie Yoos

California’s Lake Tahoe is an esteemed national treasure and spectacular destination adored for its breathtaking scenery, crystal clear and cool waters, and rich history. Surrounded by the majestic Sierra Mountain range, its four distinct seasons welcome athletes, adventurers, and casual travelers alike, offering something for everyone. Here, we explore recommendations from Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices network members specializing in various areas of Lake Tahoe, along with some of their favorite hidden gems.

“South Shore serves the largest resident population around the lake and has the largest variety of businesses,” says Deb Howard of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Drysdale Properties. “It’s home to several resort casinos and the largest hotel and bed base in the Lake Tahoe Basin.”

Hiking opportunities are plentiful, and are a Tahoe staple. Howard suggests trails that scale the majestic Sierra Mountain scapes— what she calls “a mountain biker and hiker’s exploration nirvana.” Personally, she loves Fallen Leaf Lake and Tahoe Rim Trail.

Foodies will surely be pleased by the variety of dining options. Howard suggests Freshies Ohana Restaurant and Bar; “The outside deck is a must-do for lunch and dinner. Stop for ice cream at the Rainbow Island Ice Cream Shoppe, which you pass on your way to Freshies.”

“The nightlife is robust with outdoor dining, taverns and lounges with a vibrant social and music scene.” Howard endorses the American Century Golf Championship at Edgewood, Harvey’s outdoor music series, and the potholes: swimming holes carved out of the granite landscape at Silver Lake that she regards as a South Shore gem. Of course, she encourages folks to enjoy the lakes. “A day on the lake is the best day ever. A summertime must-do.”

Kimberly Boyle of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Drysdale Properties offers Tahoe City expertise. “Tahoe City is all about outdoor recreation with the whole family. Boating, kayaking, beach days, hiking, biking, and al fresco dining are just some of the attractions you’ll find on any summer day.” She enjoys the weekly concert series at Common’s Beach. “I love bringing all the fixings for a picnic during the concert. A great event for families.”

Boyle recommends the Tahoe City Farmers Market on Commons Beach and the the Tahoe City Food and Wine Classic, where guests can sample local restaurants. Sunset cruises on the Tahoe Gal, chartering a boat, wakesurfing, and appreciating the public beaches and trails are among her suggestions as well. “Blackwood Canyon is a hidden gem and wonderful if you’re looking to get away from the crowds.” For a bite, Boyle praises River Grill, popular amongst locals and visitors alike with a great happy hour and live music.

Lastly, Alison Elder of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Drysdale Properties, Elder Group Tahoe Real Estate, provides insight on Truckee—recently named one of the best places to retire and in the top 10 small towns with millionaires by Kiplinger. With a unique history as an early California railroad town, it has since become a recognized vacation destination just minutes from Lake Tahoe.

“A variety of indoor/outdoor dining with fantastic organic food is available, and a wonderful Farmer’s Market on Tuesdays in the summer months,” she says. “The integrated bike paths are fabulous. Truckee Thursdays is a big hit. The Old Town area is closed off and there are so many vendors—jewelry, food, beverages, live entertainment—it’s very popular.”

Truckee offers a myriad of ways to get active in the summer. “Northstar has a great outdoor adventure course and an amazing downhill biking adventure for all levels. Palisades offers rock climbing, Granlibakken offers zip-lining. Donner Lake and Lake Tahoe offer boat and jet ski rentals.”

Elder personally loves a 20-mile ride along the Truckee River on the Legacy Trail, breakfast at Squeeze Inn, a private boat ride on Lake Tahoe, and enjoying the sunset from a private pier at Donner Lake.
