Uniquely AWAY
Summer is here and with its arrival Uniquely Away is celebrating its third birthday. To mark the occasion we have put together a lively selection of colourful features and seasonal suggestions for our readers. In our first ever issue we focused on the contemporary art exhibition at Cley. Now in UA13, we revisit the exhibition, which promises to showcase another fascinating selection of work. We stay close to the coast in some of our other articles too, suggesting places you can head to that are a little off the beaten track and will guarantee some stunning landscapes and interesting wildlife. Our feature photographer in this issue is David Molyneux – we hope you like his work as much as we do – and of course we have plenty more photography and art for you to enjoy as well. Read our diary pages for ideas of what to do and peruse our pub and restaurant sections to find somewhere to suit your own tastes when it comes to delicious dining and something to drink. As ever, we have two great competitions for you to enter where you can possibly win a luxurious two-night stay away in either Norfolk or Suffolk. Please have a go – you never know, you could be a winner! We hope you enjoy this celebratory issue and don’t forget to give us your feedback and ideas – and to wish us a happy birthday on social media. Have a great summer, Abigail Saltmarsh editor@uniquelymags.co.uk

et at the end of a long, tree-lined drive, and with its sun-soaked terrace, verdant, parkland grounds and exquisite façade, the Oaksmere presents a picture of elegance and welcome to all who approach. Once inside, the stylish blend of magnificent history and contemporary comfort quickly becomes apparent, with one fascinating room leading into another and bedrooms offering individuality, interest and above all luxury. The Oaksmere in its present incarnation is the creation of current owner Fraser Duffin, who bought the country property near Diss last year, and has transformed it into his own vision of what a hotel should offer. Here guests now not only find beautiful surroundings, high quality accommodation and superb food, but also a friendly welcome and lively ambience. “This hotel does have a buzz about it,” he suggests. “I wanted it to be a place local people and visitors from further away could come to enjoy themselves. It was important to me that it appealed to a cross-section of people and that it had some life.” Nowhere is this more apparent than in the renovation and refurbishment work
carried out by Fraser. The building has a long and interesting history: it dates back to 1574, when it was built as the dower house for the estate of Lord Cornwallis, and has been a rectory, as well as a bar and restaurant. Yet Fraser is keen for it not to remain a shrine to its past. “I used to spend a lot of time here and saw it pass through various hands,” he recalls. “I had always loved the fabulous building and thought how beautiful the 17-acre grounds were and so when the opportunity came up to buy it I went for it. “It is a wonderful building with some lovely original features and we have retained those throughout yet at the same time this is the 21st century so I did want it to have a contemporary feel too; by keeping it simple and modern you also allow the older parts to really come through.”
supply us with wonderful, high quality ingredients, such as Blythburgh free range pork and Gressingham duck. We also have our own Victorian kitchen garden, where we will grow our own herbs, fruit and vegetables, and we are even going to have our own butchery on site.” Under executive chef Alan Dann, the restaurant is now making a name for itself, serving lunch and dinner every day and coming up with the likes of hot, home-cured salmon and asparagus salad, herb-crusted goats’ cheese panna cotta, with tomato chutney and olive croute and a trio of local Blythburgh pork, as well as fine desserts such as dark chocolate fondant with white chocolate saffron sauce.
Another key element to Fraser’s vision was the restaurant. He wanted to offer a dining experience that reflected the Oaksmere’s surrounding area, drawing from the very best East Anglian produce and serving delicious, contemporary British cuisine.
Indeed, delicious food emerges from the kitchen all day, beginning with homecooked breakfasts and continuing with homemade cakes and pastries (served with the Oaksmere’s own blend of Thistledown Cottage coffee, freshly roasted in the nearby village of Brome), light snacks and tapas. Afternoon tea, where every cake is homemade and every sandwich is hand-cut, has become something of a signature event at the Oaksmere, as has Sunday lunch.
“We are right on the border of Norfolk and Suffolk here, at the heart of an incredible farming community, which can

or enjoy a drink from the extensive wine or cocktail list before moving inside. The bar and cocktail bar at the hotel also serve a full range of other drinks, including Adnams ale and Aspall cider. With its beautiful setting, 14 sumptuous bedrooms (featuring the latest technology and luxurious bathrooms, many with whirlpool baths) and extensive food and drink offering, the Oaksmere has also proved the perfect place for wedding receptions, family celebrations and corporate events. “At the moment we can cater for wedding parties of up to 100 people but we will shortly be adding a large marquee and will then be able to host up to 250 guests. From spring 2016 we will also have a licence for weddings and will be extending our restaurant,” says Fraser. With longer term plans for even more accommodation perhaps, the Oaksmere is certainly not standing still. All through the summer, balloon rides will be offered from the grounds, and there will be live music and even theatre. Guests can ask for in-room beauty and spa treatments and the hotel is only too happy to organise any bespoke events for groups – and can even offer glamping.
cycling in the area, as well as a place to come for a special meal out, a night away or a longer break. We can organise transport to and from the hotel within a 10-mile radius and can pick people up from the station at Diss,” he points out. The aim, he stresses, is also to become a destination hotel, somewhere to arrive, unwind and just enjoy being away, as well as somewhere from which to explore beautiful Norfolk and Suffolk. “We offer elegant relaxation – if you have had a busy week at work in London, you can leave the city at 6pm and be sitting at our bar, choosing something from our menu by 8pm. “You can spend the weekend with us and you don’t even need to watch the clock on Sunday – if you stay overnight we can take you to the station in the morning to catch your train, ready to be at your desk in plenty of time,” he says. And he adds: “We want our guests to come here to enjoy themselves – because we are a unique and independent hotel, we can tailor-make their time with us to suit them and we always do all we can to ensure it is truly special.” Photography by Nick Read

“Just seeing a summer photo gives you that warm feeling and takes you straight back to the moment it was taken. Summer is a wonderful time to be out and about with a camera. When the sun is out, it just seems to bring everything to life and Norfolk’s scenery bursts into colour. The wildlife becomes more active too so you see so much more when you are out exploring. “I love summertime in Norfolk. I was born and have grown up in this lovely county. I am from a small village called Southrepps, which is close to the coast but well-placed for travelling inland too.
“I have been taking photographs for 11 years now – I started out taking a small compact camera along on my walks and my passion grew from there. It is great to look back at when I first started and to see how far I have come and how much my work has evolved. “Although I have never trained as a photographer, I have spent a lot of time reading books and articles on the subject; I also believe it is a case of just getting out there and trying new techniques and practicing your compositions. Even when you get it wrong, you can learn and improve the next time.
“My primary passion is landscape photography. For me it is about capturing that special moment in time. I love calm, serene scenes and, with so many amazing locations around Norfolk, I’m pretty spoiled for choice. I do cover other areas of photography too; my main aim with all my work is to try to see things from a different and interesting view. It is all about being thought-provoking and making the viewer feel as if they are really there. “This part of the country has something here for every photographer – seascapes and waterways, countryside and woodland. There is so much diversity from the sandy

beaches to the broads, nature reserves and National Trust sites – and even the cities hold great photo opportunities. I also like how the coastline changes as you travel along it, ranging from sand dunes and stones to high cliff tops and sea defences. “I love capturing sunrise and sunset on the beach here. The colours in the sky at these times are magical and it is so calming and peaceful to witness the sun coming up or dropping below the horizon. The light is so much softer and warmer too. “There are so many different places I like to visit, depending on my mood:
Blakeney Point offers some great marshlands, Cromer has its iconic pier and then, as you follow the shoreline down, there are the old sea defences at Walcott and the beautiful lighthouse at Happisburgh. All with great beaches and a towering cliff line too. “I have been trying my hand at more portrait work recently but with the better weather now here I will be heading out to the coast and into the countryside once more. I am hoping to exhibit my work next year and am looking at creating some photo books to showcase the different aspects of Norfolk, from
the coastline to the woodlands and countryside. Getting a website up and running is also a high priority too. “My photography is an ongoing project. Being a photographer means you are always learning and honing your skills, building on those you already have. Your work is always evolving and that is what makes it so interesting.” Poster front photograph: Overstrand Main photograph: Happisburgh For more information email davemoly@aol.co.uk or visit www.facebook.com/pages/DavidMolyneux-Photography/356615724352205 www.davidmolyneuxphotography.blogspot.co.uk

Contemporary art exhibition Cley 15 runs until Sunday 2 August, featuring paintings, sculptures, textiles, ceramics and installations by artists in five locations in the North Norfolk village. Curated by Suffolk-based Meryl Doney, who is known for her work on numerous exhibitions in cathedrals and churches – including St Paul’s Cathedral – and organised by the North Norfolk Exhibition Project, Cley 15 is an open submission event.

This year’s exhibition is called Marvellous in Ordinary, a title chosen by Meryl, which she believes brings her own interests together beautifully with the spectacular coastal setting. “I am very much a ‘making’, ‘hands-on’ individual and that is the sort of work that I like too. With this exhibition, I started with the lovely Margaret Mellis piece, which is being loaned to us by her son, the artist Telfer Stokes. I have always been very inspired by her collages,” she explains. “Margaret is best-known as one of the St Ives artists but was also based in Suffolk. She used to collect driftwood and create her work from it – and her aim was always to find the marvellous in the very ordinary. “Telfer works in a similar vein but in metal and as one of our guest artists, his piece will be there to echo hers.” Other guest artists Laurence Edwards and Charlie Hawkins are also featured, together with 49 other participants whose work was individually selected by Meryl. “I chose pieces that I knew would work well within the spaces,” she says. “Because the exhibition was open submission and so site-specific, it inspired

“This year we have also been able to use the chancel in the church and three works were proposed for the space – one is an altar cloth made from teabags by the Rev Wendy Shaw; then we also have a chalice and paten by Sarah Caputo and a ghost boat by Cass Wedd, which is suspended high up with its mooring rope attached to the altar rail. This is particularly atmospheric as it has sound.” The exhibition also includes a programme of workshops and other events for both adults and children.

“There is so much to experience and enjoy at this exhibition,” Meryl adds. “From exhibits, such as the single brick washed by the sea, to much larger pieces, like Bog Man, they do all reflect just how marvellous something very ordinary can be.” For more information visit www.cleycontemporaryart.org

“Take a glance through a looking glass – where maybe the grass really is greener on the other side.” Escape into the world of Samuel Thomas’s paintings where picture perfect moments exude with intense colour combinations and intricate patterns; influences range from pop art, art deco and psychedelic styles. There is a sense of nostalgia and timelessness surrounding Samuel’s artwork and his distinctive painting style is reminiscent of the iconic 1920s’ “come to the seaside” railway posters. A Norfolk based artist with a refreshing perspective and painting style that is truly unique, euphoric and mesmerising. I N TH E PICTU R E Trevor, can you tell us a little about yourself? I’ve always been observant; taking in more than just my surrounds. It’s about the atmosphere of a place and escaping from the ordinary. I’m also a perfectionist, so when it comes to my painting, and picture framing, it has to be absolutely spot on. I’ve always had a keen interest in painting and good design, with a particular interest in architecture. In 2001, I was able to realise my ambitions and began to paint in my spare time and sell my work in a few local galleries. Over the next couple of years I developed a very distinctive style and the skill of breaking down what I see in everyday life into shapes and bold colours, and it was then that my work began to take off. I decided to become a freelance artist in 2004 and since then my career has snowballed year on year. How would you define your work now? My work has always been strong and graphic in style, featuring instantly recognisable scenes without the everyday clutter, which encourages the observer to
look at everyday views in a new light. My style is always developing, and this year it’s become slightly more abstract, featuring flat areas of colour, broken up with rich painted texture and lines. But you can still see what is being depicted, and you can still see it’s distinctly my work. Why did you both decide to open Gallery Plus? We opened the gallery in 2009. Trevor was already self-employed as an artist and picture framer and Jo had been working at a local theatre as a designer and exhibition co-ordinator. We had previously worked together in a local art gallery and both had extensive experience in the field, so when we found out the large space on Warham Road was going to become available, we jumped at the opportunity to open our own gallery and picture framer’s, where Trevor could also have an open studio. How would you describe the gallery? The gallery boasts unrivalled natural light and offers a unique browsing and buying experience in a refreshingly open, bright
and airy exhibition space. Most importantly, we offer something different from other galleries in the area and there is a high quality, on-going mixed show of original paintings, original prints, ceramics, glassware, sculpture and jewellery by artists and makers from around the country, as well as solo and group exhibitions during the year. We pride ourselves on our friendly welcome and relaxed atmosphere, with an unpressured approach, which has proved popular with our returning customers. Tell us a little about some of the other artists and makers you feature? We have lino cuts by the hugely popular local artist HJ Jackson, for example, who celebrated 60 years of printmaking in 2013; hand-coloured etchings, books and cards by Graham Clarke, one of Britain’s most popular and best-selling printmakers; landscapes that reflect the changing light and seasons by East Anglian artist Paul Evans; and dramatic, atmospheric etchings by Anja Percival. Ceramics include contemporary

We also stock garden sculptures by local artist blacksmith Toby Winterbourn, whose work has been featured on the BBC. The exhibition space is regularly updated, so you’re sure to see something new every time you visit. Do you have any new artists you would like to tell us about? We were thrilled to take on board ceramist, Sophie Southgate. Sophie’s practice is an on-going exploration of the object and the vessel. She takes inspiration from the landscape, paring it back to abstract interpretations of space through basic geometric forms. Then we also have Penny Withers, who uses stoneware and porcelain, and fires her work in either electric or wood kilns. Her monochrome glazes reflect tonal ranges of light. And we’ve recently added a new glass artist, Laura Birdsall, whose blown-glass vessels with strong sculptural qualities really caught our eye. What other services does the gallery
offer? Gallery Plus offers a professional picture framing service. There is a wide choice of natural wood and aluminium mouldings, prices are competitive and conservation standard materials are used. We are on hand to offer our expert advice and friendly guidance. Trevor, can you tell us about your Underground, Overground exhibition in August? Underground, Overground will be an engaging colour field of London paintings. This exhibition explores graphic, abstract shape and colour around two central themes of the London Underground and London reflections. Featuring around 50 paintings, this is going to be an explosion of colour! Tell us a little about the theme and what inspired you to come up with it? These two series of paintings allow me to push my style further in terms of creativity, but still hold on to my core principles regarding the way I paint and choose subjects. Along with the central theme there will also be a selection of
paintings of familiar London landmarks, plus one or two surprises! Can you tell us about any of the paintings that might be included? As part of the exhibition there will be a series of 10 paintings that won’t be revealed until the opening day – so you’ll just have to come to the exhibition to see more! Underground, Overground opens on Saturday 22 August with a preview day and continues daily until Saturday 5 September. Also look out for the gallery’s Summer Through Autumn exhibition, featuring all its artists and makers, then the HJ Jackson showcase exhibition and book signing, from Saturday 24 October (when the artist will be at the gallery to sign his new book Afloat and Ashore) to Saturday 31 October. Sculptural ceramicist Blandine Anderson is to exhibit at Imagine Gallery, in Suffolk, revealing “life on the edge” in her beautiful porcelain and stoneware clay pieces

T
here is an innate beauty to the work of Blandine Anderson, which has captivated collectors across the world. Blandine, who lives in the West Country, produces ceramic sculptures and paintings, each individually hand-built and inspired by her surroundings.
to focus on the incredible way they adapt and the great feats they undergo just to survive, migrating across continents, for example.
Now, for the first time, her work is to be exhibited in Suffolk, when Imagine Gallery, in Long Melford, mounts Life on the Edge, from Sunday 20 September.
“After meeting John, however, Life on the Edge also seemed ideal as the gallery is in East Anglia, right on the edge of the country to the east, while I am based in the west, right on the edge in the other direction. There are some things these two areas have in common and others that are quite different”
Gallery owner John Foley says: “I have been fascinated by Blandine’s work for years now. The shapes and textures she creates are so tactile and the perspectives she takes with her sculptures are fascinating; her pieces are truly unique.”
Blandine, who runs a smallholding, was inspired to consider the various creatures inhabiting the different regions, both domestic, such as the rare breed Devon and Cornwall longwool sheep, and wild.
In her work, Blandine combines her love of nature with her desire to create. As a small child she was obsessed with making things and with wildlife. Following a degree in Fine Art Ceramics, she developed a passion for the pieces of Jean Arp, a German-French abstract artist and sculptor.
“Here, in the west, for example, we have a bird called the chough, which is a member of the crow family, while in the east, there is the avocet, which is very different.”
“His work was very organic and fluid, and sparked an interest that has stayed with me to this day,” she says. She also began to focus more on the creation of pieces featuring animals, allowing her work to reflect her own fascination with the world around her. “People respond to animals – I think it is because they have faces and they respond to them as they would to another person,” she suggests. “It is wonderful to think people fall in love with the character of an animal that you and the kiln have created between you.” Life on the Edge is a theme Blandine has been contemplating for some time now, one which seemed perfect for the solo exhibition at Imagine Gallery. “It embodies three different ideas – firstly, the way that animals live on the edge of the man-made world we inhabit and then also the sense that they are on the edge in terms of survival; I wanted
She expects to display approximately 50 pieces in the exhibition, including some of her paintings, which she creates by building up, and then often scratching into, the surface area; the colours and textures of these will echo the ceramics. “The pieces reflecting the east have been inspired by my visits to Suffolk; my memories are of hedges that are brighter, with more greens and yellows, and a countryside that is full of flowers. The colours of the west are a darker green, with blues and purples,” she adds. “In all my work, I am hugely affected by the colours of the seasons – and now of course these are very much the colours of summertime.” Life on the Edge runs from Sunday 20 September to Sunday 18 October. For more information on the exhibition or Imagine Gallery call 01787 378786 or visit www.imaginegallery.co.uk From Sunday 23 August to Sunday 13 September, Imagine Gallery will be mounting an exhibition of pottery by Maureen Minchin.

VISUAL IMPACT THIS YEAR’S SWAFFHAM VISUAL ARTS FESTIVAL OFFERS A LIVELY PROGRAMME OF EVENTS AND THE CHANCE TO SEE HUNDREDS OF WORKS OF ART
ith beautiful textiles, elaborate sculptures and some 300 other works of art on display, the Norfolk market town of Swaffham will become the place to visit during its exhibition of the visual arts.
W
In addition to the displays themselves, Swaffham Visual Arts 2015 is also including a series of events and activities, from its festival launch fashion show on Friday 9 October to talks, workshops, a film night and a sale. Denis Bishop, spokesman for the festival’s organisers, the Rotary Club of Swaffham, says the event has grown beyond all recognition and become something of an annual calendar highlight, not only for the town but also for visitors from across the county and beyond. “We started off 20 years ago with a very simple art exhibition in the village of Mundford but there has been such enthusiasm for it that it has grown considerably – and four years ago the decision was taken to make the exhibition part of a visual arts festival, giving us the opportunity to add other events.” This year there has been a gentle build-up to the main event with Surgery of Art, an ongoing display of work by artists Sonia Orr, Christopher
Hollick, Stephen Ward and Malcolm Whittley at the Manor Farm Medical Centre in Swaffham. The festival, which is sponsored by Abel Homes, launches on Friday 9 October with a fashion event at the Nicholas Hamond Academy, supported by Norwich Fashion Week and the Costume and Textile Association for Norfolk Museums. This is followed by a textile event, with specialist Yvonne Brown on Wednesday 14 October, a photography evening with Ipswich-based Tom Owens on Wednesday 21 October and a film night with a screening of the Book Thief on Thursday 29 October, all at the Assembly Rooms in Swaffham. “There will be a sculpture display at Manor Farm Medical Centre on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November and then the main art exhibition and sale of works over the same weekend at the Assembly Rooms,” says Denis. “A preview evening for the exhibition will take place on Friday 6 November.” Artists from Norfolk, Suffolk and across the country are being featured in the main exhibition, which includes pieces in a range of media. The Rotary Club of Swaffham, part of the
largest worldwide service organisation, has been supporting local, national and international communities through fundraising activities for more than 40 years now. Its almost 30 dedicated members, with associates, friends and family supporters, have raised tens of thousands of pounds during that time for a range of different charities. “Over £80,000 has been raised for good causes as a result of the festival,” says Denis. “It is exciting because we now feature such a broad range of artists, and of course we have photography, sculpture and textiles too. “Swaffham is on a very good north to south route so is easy for people to reach if they are already in the area. We also have lots of visitors who travel to the town because they know just how good the event will be.” He adds: “This year’s festival looks set to be a great success and once again we hope to raise as much as possible for our good causes.” The Book Thief image courtesy of Swaffham Visual Arts Festival, other images Huts and Poppies by Christopher Hollick The festival launches Friday 9 October and runs until Sunday 8 November For more information on events and tickets visit www.swaffhamvisualartsfestival.co.uk Tickets are available on the door or in advance from Ceres Bookshop, London Street, Swaffham

From detailed snapshots of the minutiae of daily life to larger pictures featuring the people, animals and places she loves, everything seems to elicit interest and evoke in her the zeal to capture it on canvas.
Janeanne, who lives at Shotley, in Suffolk, forged a career in painting relatively late in life but came from an artistic family and has always enjoyed the subject. Her great-great-grandfather was a founder member of the Royal Cambrian Academy of Art and her father was a technical engineer.
“Everywhere I go I see things I want to paint, whether it is something with particularly vibrant colours or a scene that just seems so beautiful,” she admits. “My art is heavily influenced by my surroundings – the countryside, the villages and the people of Suffolk – and I have a particular affinity for
“My father used to bring incredibly large pieces of paper back from work and I would use them to make scenery for the plays my four brothers and I put on,” she recalls. “I also had a wonderful art teacher at school who thought I was good but at that time I was lacking in confidence.”

For a while, Janeanne worked in the field of graphic art, helping a designer and then for a printing firm, before taking time out to have her children. “I still loved art and painted some murals on their bedroom walls. A neighbour saw a ceiling through a window and asked if I would paint some murals for a school. I agreed and then the story and pictures appeared in the local paper. From that piece a theatre company asked if I would paint a large backdrop for their production of Barnum at the Ipswich Regent.” The mural and scenery work rekindled Janeanne’s passion for art and, despite being immersed in bringing up five children by that point, she decided

Suffolk-born artist Janeanne Griffin is known for her bold use of colour and her passion for capturing her surroundings on canvas to take a BA Hons in Fine Art. “I graduated in 2004, having particularly enjoyed the animation, sculpture and applied art side. Then my mum asked me to take part in a local exhibition and I eventually agreed to submit five drawings,” she says. “I sold one and was so upset about it that I decided to paint the image for myself!” Before long, Janeanne was experimenting with acrylics, trying out different techniques and painting a variety of subject matter. “I love large paintings and bright colours; I like painting the water, flowers and birds. I often have a camera with me and take as many pictures as I can.
I enjoy photography in itself but I also try to capture moments in my pictures that I know I can go back and paint.” Over the years since her career really got going, Janeanne has taken part in numerous exhibitions, both with other artists and as a solo exhibitor. She has been involved in Suffolk Open Studios and this summer will see her exhibit in the Tourist Information Centre in Ipswich throughout July and August, and take part in Art on the Prom in Felixstowe on Sunday 6 September. She is also always happy to welcome visitors to her studio by appointment.

GUN HILL
BRANCASTER
This stunning beach certainly feels a million miles away from anywhere else but be prepared for a long walk. It takes about 45 minutes to reach Gun Hill from the car park and quay at Burnham Overy Staithe.
More accessible and with a tendency to be busier in the summer, Brancaster is a classic North Norfolk beach. Because of the sheer space and acres of sand, however, you can escape the crowds and if you want Norfolk at its wildest you will find it here.
To get to the beach head north on the track that goes towards the dunes. Follow it out through the fields and then between the reed beds and marshes, which are home to all sorts of birds, including flyover spoonbills and egrets in the summer. Once over the dunes, you will find stretching golden sands and unrivalled views out along the coast towards Holkham.
With a backdrop of sand dunes, and salt and freshwater marshes, this beach offers a chance to watch the terns whizzing by overhead from nearby Scolt Head Island. Take care not to disturb birds nesting in the sand beyond the tide line.

OVERSTRAND
Here you will find a very different beach, which is largely shingly but with sand at low water.
The joys of Cromer are many but if you want a quieter beach experience then head out east along the beach to Overstrand at low water.
Wander eastwards to leave the bucket and spaders behind you and you will see the exact point at which the cliffs of the Cromer ridge begin, rising in miniature from the shingle.
Here you will find an incredible record of the Ice Ages in the contorted cliff faces, and slumped soft cliffs too.
Gaze out to sea and you can spot, at low tide, the beginnings of an incredible chalk reef, where there are 20 miles of dramatic underwater gullies, ridges and arches, populated by a myriad of fish, plants and crustaceans.
These cliffs are wildernesses in themselves, with rare plants and invertebrates flourishing in their untouched expanses and springs flowing down to the sea. From the cliff top, you can sometimes spot pods of whales and porpoises basking.
Poster front photograph at Overstrand by David Molyneux Main photograph is courtesy of Ian Watts and the Holkham Estate Visitors are urged to take great care not to disturb ground nesting birds, and to look out for signs advising where they might be. All these beaches are accessible after walking from public transport stops. ood food, a seasonal menu and above all what the team at the Bell at Sax like to eat themselves – the East Suffolk “restaurant with rooms” is known for its flavoursome food. Chef and owner Jonny Nicholson says his menu focuses on elegant yet simple dishes, breakfasts, brunches, lunches and dinners that he considers “comfort food classics.” “Our cooking might be described as ‘modern British,’” but put more simply, it’s the food we like to eat ourselves,” he points out. “We want to be known for good food at a good price, served within a welcoming

he Library Restaurant in Norwich has always been known as a stylish place to eat – now it has been refurbished and its menus have been given a slightly different flavour. Jayne Raffles, who runs the restaurant with her husband Nigel, says the idea was to create a more relaxed ambience, with more opportunities for casual dining. “We have a new ethos and in some ways it feels like a new restaurant,” she admits. “We have now opened up an all-day lounge area, where people who do not necessarily want to sit down to a three-course meal can come in for coffee and cake or perhaps a glass of wine or a cocktail. In addition to a more formal style of dining, we now offer
restaurant, where people can take their time, celebrate with family and friends or just come in for a bite to eat because they want to escape the washing-up at home.” Dishes are created using fresh,
tapas and light lunches.” Head chef Jake Garwood has enhanced the menu with some fresh, new dishes, based as usual on seasonal, local ingredients but offering a broader choice. “We are known of course for our woodgrilled dishes and will continue to do those but there will be lots of other options too. This summer, for example, we will be serving asparagus, with free range eggs and parmesan; tempura artichokes, with ibérico ham, manchego cheese and aioli, and salt and pepper squid.”
seasonal produce, sourced from as close to the Bell as possible. Beef, for example, comes from Clarkes of Bramfield, owned by Jeremy Thickitt, who has his own Suffolk Red Poll herd. The likes of Shipcord and Suffolk Gold cheeses, baked Bungay brie, Suffolk spring lamb and Cromer crab also feature on the menu. Set in an early Victorian building, on the site of a centuries-old coaching inn in Saxmundham, the Bell also offers 10 comfortable bedrooms for those guests keen to stay overnight. “This is a great place to come to for a break or the odd night away,” Jonny adds. “It is a perfect bolthole, somewhere for some rest and relaxation, delicious feasting and to just get away from it all.” Photography courtesy of the Bell at Sax For more information call 01728 602331 or visit www.thebellatsax.co.uk
Formal seating is now up on the mezzanine level of the historic building and the restaurant can still accommodate its own events and those that are privately booked, including weddings and corporate functions. “We have such a great space here: it is very flexible and can accommodate all sorts of events,” Jayne adds. “This is a lovely, grand building but we want people to know we don’t just offer fine dining here – there are all sorts of other ways to enjoy what we offer. “This is now somewhere people can pop in for something to eat or drink before or after shopping, perhaps, or somewhere central they can arrange to meet up with their friends while they are in the city.” Photography courtesy of the Library Restaurant For more information call 01603 616606 or visit www.thelibraryrestaurant.co.uk

ward-winning Norfolk restaurant the Olive Tree offers modern British food in a stylish and yet relaxed setting. The idea, says restaurant manager Anna Denmark, is for customers to feel they can relax over anything from a cup of coffee or a light meal to a full à la carte lunch or dinner in the attractive surroundings. “There is a Mediterranean feel to the Olive Tree: in addition to the restaurant we have an outside terrace, with a water feature full of koi carp, as well as box hedges, olive trees and papyrus grass. Lee, who recently won the Chef of the Year title at the Suffolk Food and Drink Awards 2015, uses food produced as close to the restaurant as possible in his menus. “My aim is to keep customers coming in to the restaurant and enjoying the food - and part of that is choosing ingredients carefully. This summer I will be using Tilbrook’s asparagus, which is grown in fields across the road from where we are, as well as local

Under head chef Craig Wadsworth, dishes could include the likes of twice-baked, Norfolk Smoked Dapple soufflé, with an apple and pecan salad, pan-fried Cajun sea trout fillet, with wild garlic, crayfish and pea potato cake, mangetout and tomato salsa. The Olive Tree, which can cater for weddings and special occasions, also has a lively programme of events. “Guests can find full details of these on our website and have the option of also booking a set, three-course meal,” Anna adds. Lee has been at the restaurant since February 2014 and has already earned a two AA rosette award and won the prestigious Good Food Guide Editors’ Award 2015 for the best set lunch menu in the UK. Tuddenham Mill is a restored historic water mill situated in between Newmarket and Bury St Edmunds. As well as the restaurant, it has 15 bedrooms. “I like working here with the team and have enjoyed the challenge of developing the menu. For me it is about making sure guests have a lot of choice, with plenty of offers, so we are open to more people. UNIQUELY AWAY SUMMER 2015
W
hether you love the delicacy of a fine flaky pastry or the spicy flavour of a freshly cooked curry, there is sure to be something at the Sandringham Food and Drink Festival to tantalise your taste buds. Living Heritage Events is staging its first ever Sandringham Food and Drink Festival and with some of the biggest names in the business ready to give away their culinary secrets it looks set to be a sizzling affair. Taking place on the Sandringham Estate on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 August, the festival will include food theatres, halls, a real ale marquee and a piazza, as well as live music and crafts. There will be food demonstrations to watch, produce to buy and freshly prepared dishes to sit down and enjoy. Director Mark Hulme says the decision to stage the event at Sandringham was taken after the overwhelming success
of a similar festival in Nottingham. The idea, he stresses, is to introduce people to new and exciting dishes from across the world and to showcase some of the fine produce we have right here in Britain. “We have a great line-up of celebrity and television chefs, including musician Levi Roots, who is, of course, known for his Reggae Reggae Sauce, and now makes regular television appearances, and Dean Edwards, from ITV’s Lorraine,” he says. “Both Levi and Dean will be appearing on the Saturday while on the Sunday, we have the Fabulous Baker Brothers, Henry and Tom Herbert, also familiar faces from television, and Shelina Permalloo, who was crowned the winner of Master Chef 2012 and is known for her Mauritian cooking.” Well-known chef, presenter and forager Mark Lloyd will be both compèring and cooking on the main stage while other experts will be demonstrating their techniques at the Food Road Show.
“There will be four main food halls at the festival, as well as other marquees and smaller stands on site. The Piazza will be where people can stop for a while over food chosen from a wide selection of dishes from around the world and enjoy some live blues or jazz music. There will also be a real ale marquee and a small craft village.” Some local producers will have stands at the event and others from across the country will also be present, keen to introduce festival-goers to their wares. “This is an event for families to come along to, take part in and enjoy,” says Mark. “It will, of course, be of great interest to foodies and those with a passion for cooking themselves but it will also be a lively and fun day for those just keen to come along and enjoy themselves.” Photography courtesy of Living Heritage Events For more information call 01283 820660 or to book tickets in advance visit www.sandringhamfoodfestival.co.uk

Delicious, locally brewed beer, superb home-cooked food and a welcoming ambience – Norfolk and Suffolk have more than their fair share of exceptional pubs
RAISING THE BAR
THE SHIP BRANCASTER, NORFOLK
t has been six years now since television chef Chris Coubrough launched the Ship at Brancaster, adding it to his select group of pubs and hotels. Set at the end of the beach road, in the popular North Norfolk village, and with nine individually designed bedrooms, this member of the Flying Kiwi Inns group has a warm and inviting bar area and can cater for up to 100 discerning diners in its restaurant. “We have retained the genuine pub feel in our renovations of the old building and also managed to keep Brancaster at the very heart of it, with
I
lots of wonderful black and white photographs that were taken here in the 1930s,” says Chris. “People come here for our food and drink but they also come to Brancaster for Brancaster, as they come to Norfolk for Norfolk.” In the summer, visitors flock to the Ship straight from the sweeping beach and dunes; they sit inside or out, over something to eat or drink, with families particularly enjoying the garden. “We are known for our fresh, local seafood – oysters that come from just 500m away, small brown shrimps from
the Wash and crabs that are also caught close by,” Chris points out. “Our grilled fish is always popular at this time of year – we have mackerel first, then delicious bass, sole and plaice, all beautifully cooked and available with a range of drinks from our bar, including, of course, Jo C’s Norfolk Ale, which is brewed locally at West Barsham, with Norfolk-grown and malted maris otter barley.” Photography courtesy of the Ship For more information call 01485 210333 or visit www.shiphotelnorfolk.co.uk

ERPINGHAM ARMS ERPINGHAM, NORFOLK
fter a long summer’s walk along Weavers’ Way, the Erpingham Arms might be just the right place to unwind with a pint of beer or to tuck into a hearty meal. Having recently reopened following a change of management, the pub and restaurant aims to focus on high quality dishes created with fine local produce, says manager Richard Lodge. “Our head chef Simon Marsh is also

a keen forager and cooks with mushrooms, wild garlic and wild Alpine strawberries he has found himself. He also uses locally caught, fresh fish and other ingredients from the surrounding area in his dishes,” says Richard. Families are welcome at the Erpingham Arms and particularly enjoy the landscaped gardens and play area. The main bar has a relaxed feel, welcoming visitors with dogs, and
offering a range of local real ales. “We have lots of events going on here throughout the summer and want people to come to the Erpingham Arms to relax and enjoy themselves,” says Richard. “We are a friendly team and this is a welcoming place, which also prides itself on its high end pub food.” Photography courtesy of Erpingham Arms For more information call 01263 761591 or visit www.erpinghamarms.com
THE VEGGIE RED LION G R E A T B R I C E T T, S U F F O L K tep into the Red Lion in tranquil Great Bricett and it looks like many other inviting, traditional Suffolk pubs. Open its menu, however, and you will discover a very special selection of dishes to tuck into along with your pint of beer or glass of wine. Jan Wise, who has owned the pub for eight years now, is passionate about vegetarian food and, just as she has at her Norfolk restaurant, River Green Café, has created an all-veggie or vegan menu. “I had always wanted to run a vegetarian pub and the Red Lion was perfect,” she says. Some visitors come in just for a drink but most sit down to choose something from the extensive menu or the specials boards. Wherever possible, dishes are made with local produce. They might include the likes of roasted mushroom
S
Wellington, halloumi and vegetable kebabs or cannellini bean and courgette crumble. “I wanted to retain the old-fashioned feel of the place: people like going to a cosy, beamed pub to enjoy a delicious meal – and in the summer they like to sit outside somewhere peaceful and beautiful like this,” says Jan. “Whether they are vegetarian or not, by coming here they have the opportunity to enjoy good, homemade food, which is a bit different. And even those meat eaters who are not very sure about it when they come in, are surprised by the quality and are very much more open-minded about vegetarian food by the time they leave.” Photography courtesy of the Veggie Red Lion For more information call 01473 657799 or visit www.theveggieredlion.co.uk

The pub offers a selection of local ales, wines, spirits and soft drinks from its bar, which is made from a large piece of oak from the Holkham Estate. “Our bar area has a nice, old English pub style, which feels friendly and welcoming,” Marks says. The Dabbling Duck has six guest rooms within its beautiful old building, as well as three newly opened en suite garden rooms. On bank holiday Sundays a live band plays and on the last Sunday of the month there is acoustic music in the bar with Sally Taylor. “All our events are listed on our website, as well as our dinner, bed and breakfast offers,” he adds.
hile there is a focus on quality at the Dabbling Duck, in pretty Great Massingham, Mark Dobby, general manager of the pub, is proud of its lack of pretentions. “What we have here is a proper old English pub, serving really, really good local produce,” he says. “Our food is home-cooked, with a bit of a twist – so we might do burger and chips, for example, but our burgers are all homemade and come with the likes of Ogleshield cheese, bacon jam and hand-cut chips. “We also serve hanger steak, which is a really nice cut of Angus beef, with bone marrow and Marmite bread and butter pudding, our own ‘beerdalaise sauce’ and our dripping chips.” Food is served inside in welcoming spaces, with wooden tables and chairs. THE WHITE HORSE BRANCASTER, NORFOLK he White Horse, at Brancaster, has been under the ownership of the Nye family for the past 18 years and has built up a reputation for its good food and drink, as well as its incredible position, overlooking the saltmarshes. Managing director James Nye says it has a broad appeal because of its “down to earth” nature. “You often find fishermen and lords

and ladies drinking next to each other here. There are families eating and locals drinking, and being right on the Norfolk Coast Path brings lots of walkers and birdwatchers in,” he points out. “The bar is designed to create an inviting and friendly atmosphere, where you can relax and we have a great range of local and regional real ales, including beers from our own microbrewery Brancaster Brewery.” The White Horse is known for its stunning location: from its deck terrace, conservatory restaurant and some of the guest rooms, it takes in panoramic views across the tidal marsh at Brancaster Staithe to Scolt Head Island and the sea. “And there is always a real taste of North Norfolk on our menu too. Brancaster Staithe oysters are a staple to enjoy with a nice glass of wine at the end of the day on the terrace and the local
catches of the day that our village fishermen bring to the door are our specials every day. Currently, for example, we have taste of the sea tiger prawn ceviche and squid tempura, baked whole plaice and Cromer crab.” Photography courtesy of the White Horse For more information call 01485 210262 or visit www.whitehorsebrancaster.co.uk

Norfolk Country Cottages NORFOLK
F
rom coastal cottages with glorious views to country homes surrounded by golden fields, Norfolk Country Cottages has more than 450 different retreats available to those keen to escape to beautiful Norfolk. General manager Heather McCraith says the county offers such varied landscapes that it inevitably has broad appeal: “What we have in Norfolk is really quite unique - beautiful countryside, with quiet lanes, incredible stretches of coast, with stunning beaches and lovely saltmarshes, the unique Norfolk Broads, and our market towns and the city of Norwich. Then, of course, we have lots of visitor attractions too. “Geographically, we cover the whole area with the properties we offer – from
Diss in the south right up to the North Norfolk coast and then from east to west as well.” The company employs local people with years of knowledge of both the area and the properties. Each holiday home has been assessed and star-graded by Visit England. “We do pride ourselves on our customer service and attention to detail. We also have good visibility, with offices in Holt and Burnham Market.” Properties range from quaint fishermen’s cottages to the likes of Bessingham Manor, which sleeps 14. This grand house, with its decorative Dutch gables and chimneys, has recently been renovated and awarded the Graham Allen Award for Design and Conservation
by North Norfolk District Council. “It is a beautifully restored and decorated home, set within 4.5 acres of its own land, and surrounded by lovely countryside in the pretty village of Bessingham, in North Norfolk, just seven and a half miles from Holt,” says Heather. “It has been carefully modernised, with beautiful bathrooms, for example, and yet it also has some impressive original features, such as its marble floor and big sweeping staircase. It is the perfect place for a multi-generational holiday or a special celebration.” Photography courtesy of Norfolk Country Cottages For more information call 01263 715779 or visit www.norfolkcottages.co.uk

White Lodge Farm Cottages HINGHAM, NORFOLK
N
icola and Joe Berry-Glynn moved to Norfolk for a change of lifestyle and are keen to share their beautiful surroundings with their guests. The couple, who live at White Lodge Farm, near Hingham, welcome visitors into their five-star, luxury accommodation – the Barn and Dairy Cottage. “These are both former farm buildings, which have been beautifully
converted,” says Nicola. “The Barn is wonderful – it sleeps up to 12 guests (and two infants) and can be booked on its own for a family or group or in conjunction with Dairy Cottage. Dairy Cottage sleeps six (plus two infants), so in total we can cater for parties of up to 18 people.” Indeed, White Lodge Farm Cottages has been popular with those on big family holidays or celebrating anniversaries or birthdays. One group comprised four generations who were marking a 100th birthday. “People like the cottages because they are comfortable, well-equipped and dog-friendly. They know they can come here and either do nothing or enjoy everything Norfolk has to offer. “We are very centrally located for reaching the beach, the Broads and the city. People sometimes come here to stay
while they play golf or perhaps go to Thetford Forest,” Nicola adds. “This is an extremely peaceful place, where you can go for the most wonderful walks. We are so pleased that we made the move up here and are pleased that other people can enjoy it too.” Photography courtesy of White Lodge Farm Cottages For more information call 01953 850435 or visit www.whitelodgefarmcottages.co.uk
Grassmere BOUGHTON, NORFOLK
O
verlooking the picturesque village green in Boughton, West Norfolk, newly modernised Grassmere offers sumptuous accommodation. Complete with its own private spa, with hot tub and steam room, the luxurious holiday retreat sleeps up to eight people (six adults and two children). Owner Victoria McDonnell bought the property in 2013, having been drawn to the tranquil village, which is well-located for walking, cycling, bird-
watching and visiting beauty spots, such as WWT Welney, Oxburgh Hall and Gooderstone Water Gardens. “We have refurbished the whole house to a very high standard, integrating modern technology and creating the beautiful spa and relaxation area, which has floor-to-ceiling glass doors and overlooks the peaceful, private garden,” she says. “My aim with the décor was to do something a bit different – to give it a retro feel with some modern elements. The living room is a calm, open space, which is ideal for socialising, and the open-plan kitchen dining room also has a lovely flow.” Grassmere features a ground floor master bedroom, with en suite wet room, which is ideal for guests with mobility problems, while upstairs guests enjoy relaxing in the Pond View and
Garden View bedrooms. There is also a children’s room, with Zen-style beds and a porthole window. “This holiday property is quite different because it has such a modern feel,” she says. “It has been given four stars and a Gold Award by Visit England and is a great base from which to visit lots of places in Norfolk.” Photography courtesy of Grassmere For more information call 07771 636903 or visit www.grassmerenorfolkhols.co.uk

his summer Sowerbys Holiday Cottages will be welcoming guests into its many different coastal properties. Company owner Andrea Sowerby says of its 250 holiday homes in Norfolk, some 50 enjoy views out across the sea. “These are all sorts of different properties, from a beautifully presented, two-bedroom apartment in the iconic
Granary at Wells-next-the-Sea, with stunning views over the quay, saltmarshes and coastline, to others where guests can stay right on the beach,” she suggests. One such property currently available through Sowerbys Holiday Cottages includes Foam Crest, at Heacham. This beach house, which sleeps up to 10 people, has four bedrooms, three with en suite bathrooms, and is situated directly on the South Beach, adjacent to the RSPB Snettisham reserve. This is a beautifully presented, spacious, contemporary apartment, within a Victorian townhouse.
It has been refurbished to a very high standard and is located within steps of Hunstanton’s blue flag sandy beach,” says Andrea. “We have a real variety of different coastal properties, with very different views, in some lovely locations.” Photography courtesy of Sowerbys Holiday Cottages For more information call 01328 730880 or visit www.sowerbysholidaycottages.co.uk
Burlington Berties SHERINGHAM, NORFOLK

hose seeking a luxury bed and breakfast experience beside the seaside could consider staying at recently opened Burlington Berties in Sheringham. Set in an elegant Edwardian residence, just a short stroll from the beach and promenade, the exclusive establishment, owned by Jan and Richard Edwards, blends boutique chic with a warm welcome. “Our first luxury bed and breakfast in
Sheringham was Hooray Henrys, which was so successful that we decided to open Burlington Berties too,” says Jan. Those staying at Burlington Berties can choose from a selection of exquisitely finished suites, as well as king, double and twin rooms, all of which have been individually styled. “I wanted to try to keep as much of the atmosphere of the old building as possible, while also giving each room a very individual look. There is a theatrical feel too, with each of the rooms named after a famous theatre.” Those arriving at Burlington Berties, which is already making a name for itself for its delicious breakfasts, stay for all sorts of reasons – to walk, play golf, attend a special occasion or just relax at the seaside. “We are also becoming something of a destination ourselves – people come
because they enjoy the experience of staying at Burlington Berties,” Jan adds. “Our aim now is to look more at holding intimate wedding celebrations here. We recently hosted a wedding party, which was a great success, with all the guests saying how wonderful it was to stay in a place like this.” Photography courtesy of Burlington Berties For more information call 01263 821500 or visit www.burlingtonbertiesboutiquehotel.co.uk

hose seeking a stay in the fine city of Norwich could enjoy space and privacy through Luxury City Apartments Norwich. The company’s stylish, serviced apartments are located in the heart of the Medieval city, within easy reach of historic sites, shopping areas, cafés, restaurants and bars. Business owner Emily Bidwell explains
many of her properties are nestled in the Cathedral Quarter, where there are cobbled streets, ancient buildings and interesting independent shops. “We have 17 apartments in total, which vary in size from one to threebedroom,” she explains. “Our one and two-bedroom Samson and Hercules apartments have an exclusive feel; they are in a relatively new, gated development, set behind a historic frontage, in Tombland, which is the oldest part of Norwich. “Our Quayside apartments have two bedrooms and are located right on the river, along a lovely cobbled lane. This building is a conversion so the apartments have lots of character.” A stay in a serviced apartment offers great flexibility and freedom,
Emily suggests. “These apartments make travelling with children easy and can be somewhere to entertain as well,” she says. “You can explore the area while also enjoying your privacy – they are really homes from home.” Photography courtesy of Luxury City Apartments Norwich For more information call 07771 881456 or visit www.samsonandherculesapartments.com
Beach View Holiday Park SIZEWELL COMMON, SUFFOLK

rom the cliff tops between RSPB Minsmere and Thorpeness, those staying at Beach View Holiday Park enjoy glorious views out across the sea. Here, explains head of marketing Nick Thorp, holidaymakers can stay in accommodation including luxury lodges, caravans, ‘snugg-pods’ and apartments, or can book pitches for their own touring caravans, smaller motor homes and tents.
“People have been staying here since the 1950s because it is such a wonderful location,” he says. “We have been here for 10 years now and in that time have brought in the luxury two and threebedroom lodges, which are available to rent or buy and have sea views.” There are three apartments – two at ground floor level, with one bedroom each, and another on the first floor, with two bedrooms and a large roof terrace: “Our snugg-pods are also great fun: these are designed for ‘tent-free’ camping. They are self-catering, with two single beds, plus a bunk bed for children, as well as a fridge, heating and lighting,” he says. “We also have a retro, vintage caravan for rent, which sleeps two people.” The campsite appeals to a mixture of guests, from families seeking a beach holiday to those who like the great outdoors. The site is also popular with
birdwatchers because of its proximity to RSPB Minsmere, home to the BBC’s Springwatch programme. “We also have an on-site bar and café, which is open through the summer – this is a lovely place to have lunch or to enjoy an evening drink, overlooking the sea.” Photography courtesy of Beach View Holiday Park For more information call 01728 830724 or visit www.beachviewholidaypark.co.uk

ESCAPE TO THE COUNTRY The Northrepps Cottage Country Hotel is a tranquil retreat, surrounded by gardens that were landscaped by Sir Humphry Repton, and just a short distance from the coast at Cromer
T
This comes from the sea into our kitchen within 45 minutes.”
his summer visitors to North Norfolk are invited to enjoy the beautiful, landscaped grounds of the Northrepps Cottage Country Hotel.
The menu is modern, British cuisine, with a seasonal influence. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served every day (the hotel’s breakfasts have won a Visit England award) and visitors can also order morning coffee or afternoon tea. On Sundays, the restaurant pulls out all the stops with its traditional roast, featuring Norfolk-reared beef and lamb, accompanied by locally grown vegetables.
The historic building has recently undergone interior refurbishment and now the aim is to make much more of its gardens by encouraging guests to indulge in outdoor dining or even glamping. Head chef Jonathan Gardiner and his wife, hotel manager Laura Gardiner, are keen to raise awareness of just what the establishment can offer those spending time in the area, as well as guests booking an overnight break. “We are in an ideal location for those who enjoy the countryside, close to some beautiful nature walks,” Jonathan points out. “We have a dog-friendly bar so people can relax and have a drink after a long walk and of course we have our own beautiful grounds. “This summer we want people to come and use our gardens much more too. We are adding some gazebos, as well as a summerhouse on the hill, and are also concentrating on barbecues in the garden. Visitors will be able to book a table and a chef will then come and cook the likes of lobster, crab, smoked prawns or steak for them on their own barbecue.” Dating back to the 18th century, the property was built on the undulating, tranquil Northrepps Estate by Bartlett Gurney. It was designed in Gothic style by William Wilkins, with gardens by the celebrated landscape designer Sir Humphry Repton. Today the attractive flint building is still owned by the Gurney family and its
place in history is remembered not only in its architecture but also its rooms. “We have eight en suite bedrooms here, each of which is unique and reflects part of the building’s history. Some have been given the name of a famous family member, such as the Elizabeth Fry bridal suite and the Anna Gurney and Bartlett Gurney rooms,” he says. “Each of the rooms has been completed to a very high quality. We are a country retreat and people come here for the peace and quiet, and to relax.” Guests also come for the fine dining, however, and under Jonathan’s guidance, Repton’s Restaurant is attracting diners from far and wide. “We try to be as self-sufficient as we can be here, growing our own fruit and vegetables where possible and using the likes of Sharrington strawberries and locally grown asparagus. We source everything as close to the hotel as we can – we even employ our own staff to catch fresh sea bass on lines for us in Cromer.
“We have a function room, where we can seat up to 180 for weddings, charity dinners and corporate events, and we have a wedding licence for people to be married either in here or in the restaurant. When weddings are held here, we can take on the organisation of the whole event, or just part of it. Likewise, guests can book the whole hotel or just the function room or restaurant.” As the Northrepps Cottage Country Hotel broadens its offering and invites its guests to immerse themselves in its outdoor experience, as well as all it offers inside, its aim is to remain approachable, accommodating and to offer the very best North Norfolk hospitality. “We are in a wonderful situation, close to some stunning beaches, the Royal Cromer Golf Club and the Victorian seaside town of Cromer itself,” says Jonathan. “Yet because we are inland, this is a quiet place and even in the summer you can come here to enjoy the peace and tranquillity in a very beautiful setting.” Photography courtesy of James Neale Photography and Reflection PR For more information call 01263 579202 or visit www.northreppscottage.co.uk

TRAVELLING LIGHT W
hether you want to experience the natural beauty of wildflower meadows, are looking for a fun day out with the family or are eager to step back in time to the days of the steam railway, it could be worth heading to the station at Wells-next-the-Sea. From the North Norfolk seaside town you can board a train and travel the length of the world’s longest 10-and-aquarter-inch narrow gauge steam railway all the way to the beautiful village of Walsingham and back.
grandfather, the late Lt Cdr Roy Francis, who founded the railway. “The railway was very much his vision – he loved the fact he could indulge in his own passion for steam while taking people through this idyllic corner of England on a day out as they might have had back in the 1950s.”
Managing director of the railway, Nick Champion, explains the trains stop at Warham St Mary and Wighton along the way, before terminating at Walsingham where passengers can explore the village, which is known as a place of pilgrimage.
Lt Cdr Francis, who died earlier this year, had an illustrious and dramatic naval career. Settling in Norfolk after the second world war, he built a miniature railway in his garden, which he would take to local fêtes. In the 1970s he was asked to oversee the building of the railway between the harbour and beach at Wells, and, later that decade, he began to consider the possibility of bringing the old Wells to Walsingham branch line back to life.
“What we have with the railway is a visitor experience that allows people to see this wonderful corner of Norfolk and to enjoy visiting Walsingham,” he explains. “We are not a heritage railway or a regular train service – we take people on a journey by steam train through countryside, where they might see 200 species of wildflower in the summer, as well as butterflies, brown hares, red kites and even buzzards.”
“He walked its length and realised it was pretty much all there. After he was given the go-ahead, he then spent all his time clearing it and laying some 7,000 sleepers,” says Nick. “It took two and a half years of hard work, with him funding it himself through a variety of means – including baking cakes and life modelling. And with help from volunteers too, the line opened in 1982.”
Nick stepped up to the controls in May last year, taking over from his wife Lizzie’s
His first steam engine was Pilgrim, which was specially built for the railway. In
1987, a Garratt locomotive named Norfolk Hero came into service; it was joined in 2011 by Norfolk Heroine. Today some 85 passengers can travel on each train. A former signal box is home to a shop and tearoom, and events take place on the railway throughout the year. “Every day during the summer holidays this year we will be running the Enchanted Railway, a fairy-tale trail, where passengers can take a steam train ride into the magical domain of fairies, trolls and toadstools. Then on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 August, it will be Wells and Walsingham Go to War, with wartime vehicles, live music and a number of different activities,” he says. “We do have lots of plans. For example, we would love to do some mystery plays, where different scenes take place all along the route. “This railway was one man’s passion but he was hugely pleased to see it remain in the family and to know it was going to carry on. Our aim now is to continue what he started and to take that vision even further.” Photography courtesy of Wells and Walsingham Light Railway and Jodi Hanagan Photography For more information call 01328 711630 or visit www.wellswalsinghamrailway.co.uk

THE BEAUTY OF HOLT GOES FAR DEEPER THAN ITS ATTRACTIVE ARCHITECTURE AND MAGNIFICENT POSITION RIGHT AT THE HEART OF SPECTACULAR NORTH NORFOLK
T
here is something about Holt that keeps enticing people to return – time and time again. Whether they live nearby, are spending an hour or two in the area or are making the most of a longer break, visitors just enjoy wandering through a town that seems to have it all. Colin Rawlings, owner of the Red Dot Gallery, in Lees Yard, believes Holt has a unique appeal and stands out as the jewel in North Norfolk’s crown purely because of the variety of what it offers. “I often say that if you could put a glass dome over Holt you would probably have the best shopping centre in the whole country,” he says.
The beauty of Holt, Colin continues, is that its high street is still home to independent butchers, bakers, fishmongers and greengrocers, who take their time to display their wares and to indulge in a friendly chat with their customers. Likewise, the town’s boutique owners are only too happy to welcome browsers and to offer advice, if sought, on everything from a piece of casual clothing right up to a full outfit for a special occasion. “We have some fantastic antiques shops, run by people who are so enthusiastic about what they do and will always go into great detail about any piece you are interested in, and we have lots of charity and second-hand shops too that are also full of lovely things.”
Coffee shops, tea rooms and other places to pause over freshly made cakes and afternoon teas abound and, of course, those seeking something more substantial can book a table for a long lunch and a glass of wine. “The art galleries we have here are also so diverse – where else could you visit somewhere like Red Dot Gallery to look at paintings of Shakespearean characters and then go on to a gallery like Adrian Hill to see a Banksy?” He adds: “I challenge anyone to come up with anywhere else in the country that is quite like Holt – it is a unique place that manages to be both aspirational and inspirational, a place full of people who have passion and spirit.”
HOLT IS KNOWN AS A GREAT PLACE FOR A CUP OF TEA OR COFFEE – BUT WHAT ARE THE SECRETS BEHIND ITS SUCCESS?

The “perfect cup of tea” is, of course, subjective but we believe there are still some essential rules to follow.
Freshly ground coffee has been part of our DNA since we opened our doors in 2000.
For black tea, for example, we boil fresh water, pour over the tea leaves and infuse for three minutes before serving with or without milk. For fruit, herbal infusions and rooibos, water is also boiled and poured over the leaves, flowers and berries before being infused for three minutes. These, however, are always served without milk. Green and white teas are also served without milk but with these we heat fresh water to about 80 deg C before pouring over the leaves and infusing for three minutes. We also believe the “perfect cup of tea” should be served in a vintage fine bone china cup.

The freshness and quality of the beans is one of the most important factors when making espresso coffee. Our Sumatra blend is made from a blend of coffee beans that come from Java or Sumatra and Santos, Brazil. This blend is a medium to dark espresso roast, full-bodied and full-flavoured with a hint of caramel and chocolaty overtones, and with a lasting roasted finish and aroma The other key ingredient to making great cappuccinos and lattes is milk quality. Milk with a higher fat content produces a thicker and creamier texture than the lower fat versions. Full-fat, foamed milk has a richer taste and complements the espresso coffee by making the drink smoother, rounder and richer in texture.

“This is a place where you can get everything from half a pound of cheese to furniture, clothes, gifts and works of art. It is an aspirational place, where you can buy fine jewellery and beautiful evening wear but it is also somewhere to pop into for half an hour to pick up a selection of delicious items for your picnic or freshly sourced fish, meat or vegetables for your evening meal.”

C O A S TA L Fashion boutique Collen and Clare has just opened its doors on a new Burnham Market store, offering its “edited” labels to customers in Norfolk as well as Suffolk
F
rom a small womenswear outlet to a destination store, which has been listed among the 50 best boutiques in the country, Collen and Clare is one of Suffolk’s success stories. Now the enterprise, which is known for its “edited” collections has reached out across the border and opened a new branch in Burnham Market. Owner Vanessa Collen says she felt the new North Norfolk branch would complement her Southwold and
Aldeburgh boutiques beautifully, bringing her chosen brands to a whole new group of customers but with an identical service and ethos. “People visit places like Southwold, Aldeburgh and Burnham Market to have a relaxing time, go walking and enjoy the views,” she suggests. “But I do believe there is also a shopper in all of us – and when we are away from home we also like to spend time in shops and to be presented with high quality products within a friendly environment. “This is exactly what we do in our boutiques and why we felt Burnham Market would sit so well with Southwold and Aldeburgh. Our aim is to offer a lot of different brands under one roof but to edit them down for our customers, from more than 100 labels to the items we like best.” Launched back in 2002, in a small shop
at the end of the High Street, in Southwold, Collen and Clare became so successful that when the opportunity arose to relocate to larger premises on the Market Place, it seemed an ideal move. From its new base, which had a history in drapery and clothing stretching back to the 18th century, the shop was able to broaden its ranges of womenswear and accessories. Concentrating also on menswear and shoes, and offering more in the way of “coastal chic,” Collen and Clare became even better known for its selections of labels, including Eileen Fisher, Max Mara, Penelope Chilvers, Levi, Converse, Samantha Sung, John Smedley, Grenson and MiH. In 2014, Vanessa was joined at the helm by one of her loyal customers, Steve Sharp, who took on the role of chairman. As a former head of marketing at Marks & Spencer, he brought with him

areas behind and upstairs that we have now opened up. The space upstairs goes right up to the rafters and has exposed beams; it really is lovely.”
“Steve had always been a fan of Collen and Clare and felt there was real scope to take it to other places that were as special as Southwold. Aldeburgh seemed to be an obvious choice and so we opened a smaller store there last February.”
The boutiques appeal to those living in Norfolk and Suffolk, as well as holidaymakers, and have developed a reputation for their customer service and friendly ambience, she says.
A STYLISH SELECTION
Having always spent a lot of time in North Norfolk, Vanessa had often thought Burnham Market would be another natural home for Collen and Clare. So when the beautiful old Grade II Listed building on Market Place that had housed Groom’s bakery became available, she jumped at the opportunity and oversaw its renovation. “We are hugely fortunate to be the next guardians of this incredible building,” she says. “In addition to the space people have seen before, there are also
“We recently had a pop-up shop in Holt, which was very successful. Holt is a place where it would make sense to be if we were ever considering opening another store – so never say never!” she adds. “But for the time being we are concentrating on Southwold, Aldeburgh and Burnham Market. Just having someone like Steve involved has been hugely exciting for me and getting to where we are today has been a real journey.” Photography courtesy of Collen and Clare
Customers will find a full range of edited brands for both men and women, as well as the Collen and Clare label and a niche beauty and fragrance selection, in Burnham Market. “In all our stores the aim is to offer a whole range of prices and sizes to appeal to people of different ages,” says Vanessa. “We have clothes for everyday wear, as well as outfits for special occasions.” For more information call Southwold on 01502 724823, Burnham Market on 01328 730558, Aldeburgh on 01728 454976 or visit www.collenandclare.com

hat better time to think about heading out with a crabbing line and bucket than those endless weeks of summer? Susie Mason, owner of Gone Crabbing, has built her Norfolk and Suffolk-based coastal gift and clothing business on our love of seaside activity, but is also keen to get the message across that you can be environmentally friendly while having fun. “We made a video last year promoting good crabbing practice and we uploaded it to YouTube,” she said. “It suggests where you can and can’t crab and how to look after the crabs once you have caught them. We feel it has been successful and are keen for people to look at it before they go out this summer too.”

This year some new colours have been introduced, as well as some fresh designs. “We have our new Team Crab 2015 children’s range, which is a good allround design, especially for older children, and then our Big Crab Country items. As usual everything is bright and colourful but there are some new yellows and pea greens too this year.” As the year progresses, there will be more of a focus on the adult ranges too Big Crab Crew Member clothes and then a tongue-in-cheek “U-Nip” range. “This is a bit of fun – the United Norfolk Independence Party will be publishing its crabby manifesto!” she joked.
Deepdale will remain at the heart of Gone Crabbing. “People seek us out every year when they come here on holiday and they order products from our online shop after they have left because they have seen first-hand what we stock,” she said. “Although our clothes last long because they are made of good quality material and wash well, it is nice to see families coming back year after year to buy larger sizes as their children grow. “We are pleased to have such a good reputation and we want to extend that by urging people to have fun in a safe and environmentally responsible way when they are out crabbing.” Photography courtesy of Gone Crabbing

European Birds Directive. It is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Ramsar site (for wetland habitats), and considered to be among Europe’s most important sites for nature conservation.
Beyond the gargantuan, arching Orwell Bridge, where the river broadens into an estuary, waters swathe the flat landscape, creating mud flats, marsh land and vegetated shingle on either side – habitats that are home to vast numbers of endangered species.
Simon Amstutz, AONB manager for the Suffolk Coast and Heaths, says those wishing to experience the fascinating landscape for themselves can follow sections of the Stour and Orwell Walk, a 42-mile walk from Felixstowe to Cattawade and Manningtree, which loops the estuary. The route is linear and therefore careful planning is required; those taking on a stretch need to be confident about making the return walk too.
Part of the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), the estuary has been designated a Special Protection Area (SPA), under the

“A good starting point would be Orwell Country Park, which is in the shadow of the bridge and gives you an insight into the landscape, as well as a chance to look at the bridge, which is quite a feat of engineering,” he suggests. “You can then follow the path as far as you like and in the summer are likely to see quite a lot of wildlife. There could be all sorts of birds, including kingfishers, lapwings, golden plovers, avocets and Brent geese on the mud flats and then in the more wooded areas you might see a short-eared owl. If you go out early in the morning or at dusk you might even spot an otter on the banks.”
The path runs parallel to the estuary in some places and moves inland in others. Suffolk Wildlife Trust reserves Trimley Marshes and Levington Lagoon are on the shores and right at the mouth of the estuary, after the Orwell has joined the Stour, and probably too far to reach in a day, is the Landguard Nature Reserve and Fort. All the way along the route, walkers are urged to keep dogs on leads as birds nesting on the intertidal flats do not have a lot of extra food support and use up vital energy if disturbed. “All the way along here there is a sense of being in a very special place,” says Simon.
“It is a very subtle landscape and then there are hamlets and villages too. You have man-made features like the bridge, ports and cranes and yet this is a wildlife site of European importance. “My philosophy in life is very much about maintaining a balance: protecting the natural environment and wildlife while also considering the requirements that we as humans have – and one of the places you can really experience this incredible juxtaposition is the Orwell Estuary.” Levington Saltmarsh and Sunset by Andrew Excell With thanks to the Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB and Suffolk Wildlife Trust for their help with this feature For more information visit www.suffolkcoastandheaths.org

f you want to experience the more tranquil side of Norfolk this summer you could take to the water.
Angling activities can also be organised where experts guide participants and take them to stretches of water where they might be lucky enough to catch large fish. It is also possible to do standup paddle boarding.
Mark Wilkinson, otherwise known as Canoe Man, launched his business after deciding he wanted to escape into the great outdoors. Now he is on a mission to tempt other people to enjoy it with him, either by boat, bicycle or on foot. “There are so many environmentally friendly activities to participate in here in Norfolk, exciting ways of getting back to nature,” he suggests. “This summer is the perfect time to escape somewhere quiet and by canoe is the ideal way to do it.”

SUFFOLK IS NOT THE FIRST PLACE WE THINK OF WHEN CONSIDERING TAKING UP SURFING BUT STEPHEN MILLER AND HIS PARTNER FRANCESCA McDANIEL ARE RIDING THE CREST OF A WAVE WITH SURFWOLD Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? Francesca and I both live close to Southwold. I am an independent yacht broker at www.norfolk-boats.co.uk and have previously been a private yacht skipper (I’m a Master 200GT captain) and Francesca has more than 5,000 nautical miles as a deckhand on private yachts. We are both stand-up paddle board and surf instructors – I am also a windsurf and sailing instructor. How long have you been a surfer? My father got me into sailing at the age of eight and a couple of years later, I took to surfing and windsurfing as it was much more challenging and exhilarating! Since then, my excitement and passion for watersports has remained strong. Francesca and I met about five years ago when I taught her to surf. It is still a huge passion for both of us – we love the excitement of riding bigger waves, teaching others and taking part in one of the coolest sports on the planet. Are Suffolk and Norfolk good places to learn? At low tide, between May and October, Southwold is an ideal spot to learn to surf as conditions see one to three-foot waves most days and
(onshore) sea breezes, which help to form good waves for learning to surf.
wetsuit of your own. This can be bought second-hand for £250 upwards.
Can anyone of any age do it or does it require a certain fitness level? A basic level of fitness is required as it is a physical sport. Our students must be able to swim 50m and list any medical conditions before signing up. Our minimum age is eight.
Do you have any advice for anyone thinking of giving it a go? Come to see us at our surf hut on Southwold campsite. We are always happy to chat and give advice and guidance. Our surfing is hugely popular with children and we plan to run a kids’ Saturday academy this summer.
How safe are the lessons? Our school has qualified instructors (ISA and BSUPA), experienced in both stand-up paddle boarding and surfing. Our surf area is continuously risk assessed and marked with large sail flags to outline the surf school area. All our surf lessons run with no more than six students to one instructor and students are never taken above chest deep in the waves.
Do you offer anything else from Surfwold? Yes, we hire surfboards for keen surfers and body boards (from £4 a day) as well as wetsuits. We also hire mountain bikes, with a helmet, bike lock, repair kit and trail maps; there are some fantastic trails to Dunwich Forest, the beach at Walberswick and pubs, as well as longer coastal routes.
What equipment do you need and is it expensive? For our surf lessons, O’Neill wetsuits are provided, along with boots and a soft surfboard so all you need to bring is a towel, sun cream and drinking water! Our introduction to surf lessons start from £18. Depending on ability, we recommend five to six surf lessons before considering buying a surfboard and
What makes surfing a thrilling experience? Catching your first wave – which is achieved 90 per cent of the time in a first-ever surf lesson with Surfwold! We also have excellent instructors and professional surf school soft surfboards to give our students their very best chance of standing and then surfing their first wave within 90 minutes.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the two-day event that attracts visitors from across Norfolk and beyond.
“Our dog ring, World of Dogs, is also hugely popular. As well as all sorts of displays, such as terrier racing, agility and working dog trials, there will be six or seven different breeds with their own marquees around the edges and we will have a gun dog clinic,” says Mark.
olourful displays, lively competitions and all manner of activities and entertainment – the Sandringham Game and Country Fair is back.
Taking place on the Sandringham Estate, near King’s Lynn, on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 of September, the fair presents an array of action-packed arenas, daring displays and exciting events for visitors to take part in themselves and to watch, explains director Mark Hulme. “As usual there will be so much going on at the Sandringham Game and Country Fair this year,” he says. “We will have four arenas – many country shows have just one but we like to make sure there is always something happening that our visitors will be interested in.” The largest of these is the Andy Singleton Arena, where all the equestrian events take place. These include the likes of horse-boarding, scurry driving, shire horse logging and pony club and mounted games, as well as magnificent stunt riders the Horsemen of the Knight. The Countryside Arena will also be a hive
“Dog lovers will also enjoy entering their pets into the fun dog show classes at Sandringham, such as Waggiest Tail and Prettiest Eyes!” The fourth focal point is the Vintage Arena, where a variety of different vehicles and machinery will be displayed. These will range from classic cars and bikes to steam engines, tractors, miniatures and stationary engines. Another highlight of the event is always the Craft Village, where there will be up to 60 different stands and visitors can watch artists and craftspeople demonstrating their skills. The Food, Glorious Food section is also always a great success, with its live cookery demonstrations, stands laden with delicious produce and tasty, freshly prepared dishes.
“We have places where people can watch food being made, buy it to take home and of course sit down to enjoy it while they are at the event,” he says. “There are so many attractions at this year’s fair – we also have chainsaw carving, clay pigeon shooting, air rifles, fishing on the lake and the English Backswording Championships, where competitors fight in pairs and have to hit each other with wooden sticks. As you can imagine, this caused quite a stir last year!” Mark adds: “I think the Game and Country Fair operates on two levels – certainly those who love the countryside and country sports always come along to watch, compete and join in but we do also have lots of visitors who just come along because they enjoy it all so much. “They like watching the displays, taking part in some of the fun activities and generally enjoying the whole experience of what is essentially a great day out.”

UNIQUELY AWAY SUMMER 2015
In the know good independent shops – I think it’s really important to support local business. In the summer, any of the National Trust properties are also great. I particularly like Felbrigg Hall, where they have a great walled garden.

Wendy Hills, Flower farmer Have you always lived in Norfolk? I’ve lived mostly in Norfolk since my parents relocated from Hertfordshire when I was a baby. I’m lucky to live in such beautiful countryside close to the Norfolk and Suffolk border. I have a strong sense of belonging to Norfolk, particularly to Breckland. What do you enjoy about living here? The big skies! And the fact that where I live is rural but not isolated. Norwich and Bury St Edmunds are only 30 minutes away and it takes just an hour to get to the coast or to the forest for a walk. Where are your favourite places here to spend time? I love Norwich for its
Tell us about your flower business? I was looking into a form of selfemployment that would combine my love of horticulture but also give me a degree of flexibility while my children are still young. I stumbled across flower farming and I was hooked! In 2012, I took on a disused walled garden of approximately 1.2 acres and, as the demand for my flowers increased, slowly brought more and more land into cultivation by hand. I plan to have the whole garden in production next year. Can you tell us about some of the flowers that will be in season this summer? The summer garden brings such a choice of roses, delphiniums, antirrhinums, sweet peas, zinnia, eryngiums, sunflowers, and my favourite, dahlias. These come in all colours, shapes and sizes and are fabulously productive as cut flowers. Which flowers grow particularly well in Norfolk and Suffolk? As we have less rainfall than a lot of other counties I’d always choose more drought tolerant plants like lavender, poppies and verbena. There are a lot of annuals that will happily survive with less water if planted the previous autumn – this gives the plant time to develop a stronger root system that can draw moisture deep within the soil during dryer periods.
Why are you keen for people to buy local and seasonal flowers? Currently 80 per cent of all flowers bought in the UK are imported, which is such a shame as so many of the flowers in our gardens are overlooked and not selected for our vases. Local flowers offer a greater, everchanging choice and can be picked at their best. You only have to compare an imported rose, which is often straight, scentless and of a uniform size, with a British garden rose, which may be big and blousy or small and delicate but either way will fill the air with its scent – there’s no contest really! Will you be at any events this summer that you would like to tell us about? I’m part of a network of flower growers called Flowers from the Farm; we shall be at Sandringham Flower Show this year, with flower demonstrations, displays and our beautiful local flowers to buy. At least 10 of us will be present to answer questions and put people in touch with their local flower farmer. What else are you looking forward to doing in Norfolk or Suffolk this summer? Summer is my busiest time, there’s always lots to do - harvesting and weeding, as well as starting the biennials and prepping the ground for autumn sowing. I will, however, be making some time for day trips to the beach and the Norfolk Broads with the kids. And I keep saying I’ll visit Helmingham Hall, maybe I’ll make it this summer!
