n exquisite former grain barn, a beautiful thatched farmhouse and five more Suffolk barns – all surrounded by scenic Suffolk countryside. In the five years or so since Carl Scott has been welcoming guests to Woodfarm Barns, his luxury holiday homes have been tempting visitors back time and time again. Set in two acres of wooded, landscaped grounds, and offering a range of sumptuous accommodation, the selfcatering properties appeal to all sorts of guests, from couples seeking a romantic getaway and keen walkers with dogs to large groups celebrating an event and even wedding parties. “We have repeat business here every single week,” he says. “There’s always someone who’s been before – we have one couple now booked in for their 12th stay! “For large groups we can offer a real opportunity for people to chill out with each other in a luxurious but relaxed environment.”

Carl had been renovating period property in Suffolk for many years when he bought Woodfarm in 2009. At the time it included a 500-year-old thatched farmhouse and some old barns, and his dream was to create a private collection of luxurious, award-winning, dogfriendly holiday cottages. “I spent a year renovating Woodfarm House, which is steeped in character, with exposed oak timbers in every room and so much quirky charm. I worked with a builder and we then set about converting the Granary Barn, a 300year-old former Suffolk grain barn.” While letting the farmhouse and Granary Barn, he then embarked upon a project to build five individual barns in the adjacent wooded meadow. “Most people think the new barns have been there for years because they are in keeping with the Suffolk barn style; we built them in a very mature meadow and they are surrounded by our superb landscaped garden so they have the appearance of having grown out of the ground among the trees.”

All seven properties have scooped the prestigious Quality in Tourism Gold Award from Visit England and thanks to consistent five-star reviews (well over 100) from guests, Woodfarm Barns has also been awarded Tripadvisor’s Certificate of Excellence. Woodfarm House sleeps seven but has plenty of room for many more to relax in. Each of the six barns sleeps two: “We can accommodate groups of up to 19 in total but the mainstay of our business is romantic breaks in the barns, with family celebrations in the farmhouse.” Woodfarm House has four bedrooms, three bathrooms (two with roll-top baths), a magnificent dining room, as well as a drawing room with an open fire and comfortable sofas, and a large farmhouse kitchen, with a range cooker. The six Suffolk barns are also full of rural charm and have been furnished and fitted out with comfort in mind. “We accept up to three dogs in all our cottages and they all have enclosed, private gardens, so they are perfect for toddlers and dogs alike,” he says.

“Included within the price of each cottage is a delicious, locally sourced welcome basket, with eggs, bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes, bread, butter, jam and marmalade and fruit – and we leave a jar of cookies so guests can enjoy a cuppa on arrival.” All the holiday homes have free wifi, plus flat-screen televisions, complete with DVD and CD players, as well as iPod docking stations. Travel cots, high chairs, bicycles, DVDs, CDs, books and games can be borrowed. “We also have a couple of barns with hot tubs and plans to put more in,” Carl adds. Guests come to Woodfarm Barns to relax and explore the surrounding area and Carl, who runs his own dedicated tourism website (www.wheredowe.co.uk), is always happy to suggest places to visit. “We are right in the rural heart of Suffolk but our great advantage is that all the county’s most popular tourist destinations and attractions are within half an hour. We also have some great

pubs and restaurants within easy reach, as well as proximity to the coast and the beautiful Medieval, historic parts of Suffolk,” he explains. “There are some fabulous walks, either directly from the door or a short drive away, and there is some great cycling. Eating out is a big part of our guests’ break with us and we are lucky to have so many fabulous pubs and restaurants within easy reach too. “I also host a fine dining, pop-up restaurant here twice a year, with Mark Peters, a friend who is a Michelin-star trained chef.”

“Norfolk is a beautifully unique place and I feel very lucky to both live and work here. From sweeping countryside, broads and wonderful seascapes to historic cities, any location I’m inspired to photograph is only ever an hour’s drive away. And that’s what makes being here great. “I was born in Norwich and have lived in Norfolk all my life. I’m only a parttime photographer – during the working week I’m a marketing manager for a company. It’s a great match though, as a large part of the full-time job involves photography, and the role

requires me to be creative in many different projects. “With the landscape work I do in my free time, I’m always chasing the best light, and I enjoy a sunrise more than sunset. No matter what the conditions, I’ll always look to drive contrast and clarity in my work, using the best light of the day, and I definitely prefer a wide vista or exaggerated perspective. “I absolutely love the changeability we have in this region within such a small geographic area. One morning I’ll be photographing a sunrise on the Norfolk

Broads, and the next shoot I can be scurrying around a crashing tide. The possibilities are endless. I also think that photographing the landscape where you live totally opens your eyes to just how much there is to see locally – before I started shooting landscapes, I had a pretty narrow view of the stunning locations within touching distance of my home! “Autumn is an absolutely great time to be out and about with a camera. It’s definitely the most colourful month; the rich oranges, yellows and browns are a great contrast against any kind of sky, whether it’s a dark and stormy one or a

UNIQUELY AWAY AUTUMN 2015

bright blue one. I love reflections too, so places like the Broads present magnificent scenes of colour and any local woodland glows at its best in the golden afternoon sun at this time of year. On a selfish note, sunrises are at a more reasonable hour too, which makes getting out of bed a little easier! “As a wedding photographer as well, a lot of my time over the last couple of months has been consumed with shooting and editing some fantastic weddings, which has limited the amount of landscapes I’ve captured. However, I’ve been working to get a catalogue sorted for fine art prints,

and I feel very lucky that a couple of places have asked to sell some of my pictures. As we head into autumn, the balance will begin to shift back to landscapes, and I can’t wait to get to some new locations. “I’m just in the process of upgrading all my kit and lenses, which will literally give me a new viewpoint on the landscape. I’ve also received a few requests for locations people would like me to go and shoot for them, which is very flattering, so this focuses the mind even more to capture the best images I can. I’m just keen to make sure my

photography is always improving. “My work will hopefully be on sale soon in a couple of places, including Hodge Podge, a fantastic gift shop in Hethersett, Norfolk. I’d also like to say a huge thank you to the Maids Head Hotel in Norwich – they’ve featured one of my images super-sized in a number of their newly refurbished bathrooms” Poster front: Maids Head, this page: Cow Tower For more information on Darren’s work email butterflyeffect@mail.com, follow him on Twitter @_realitypaused or visit www.facebook.com/butterflyeffectstudios www.realitypaused.com www.butterflyeffectphotos.wordpress.com

Magnificent obsessions

The Sainsbury Centre’s latest exhibition focuses on our passion for amassing unusual objects and presents the extraordinary, personal collections of some internationally renowned artists

ndy Warhol’s cookie jars, Damien Hirst’s insect specimens and Hiroshi Sugimoto’s glass eyes – the personal and often bizarre collections of 10 major artists are being displayed at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts (SCVA). Magnificent Obsessions: The Artist as Collector is curated and organised by the Barbican Centre, in London, and also features a selection of objects belonging to post-war and contemporary artists Peter Blake, Arman, Edmund de Waal, Howard Hodgkin, Sol LeWitt, Martin Parr and Pae White. On display at the Norfolk gallery until Sunday 24 January 2016, the unusual collections are juxtaposed with individual works of art by the artists, explains deputy director of the SCVA, Ghislaine Wood. “This is very exciting for us as this is the only other UK showing of the exhibition,” she says. “We started talking to the Barbican before it opened in London and what was so lovely about it was that – although it has been in the planning for some time – lots of the artists featured really resonated with us here for other reasons. “Howard Hodgkin, Sol LeWitt and Hiroshi Sugimoto, for example, all had close connections to the Sainsbury Centre. Sugimoto knew Robert and Lisa Sainsbury from when they bought pieces from his gallery in New York.” Sugimoto is now an internationally acclaimed artist working with photography. A career as a dealer of antiquities also led to personal acquisitions, and his intriguing collection now includes the likes of early medical illustrations and glass eyes. “Sugimoto’s collections are quite eclectic and are fascinating not only because they include all sorts of different objects but also because of the way they inform his work so much.” Another highlight of the exhibition is Damien Hirst’s extraordinary collection

of anatomical models, taxidermy, specimens and skeletons; his entomological cabinet entitled Last Kingdom is one of the centrepieces of Magnificent Obsessions.

paintings, including the colourful In the Studio of Jamini Roy, form part of the main exhibition but some of his Indian miniatures from the gallery’s own collection are being shown upstairs.

“The way Hirst uses taxidermy is just stunning and, of course, he is known for creating some really quite dramatic pieces of work from it,” says Ghislaine.

“There are also some of the pieces the Sainsburys bought from Sugimoto for people to see upstairs as well.”

The exhibition features collections ranging from mass-produced memorabilia and popular collectibles to unique curiosities, rare artefacts and specimens, she continues, providing insight into the inspirations, influences, motives and obsessions of the artists. There are such diverse objects as Peter Blake’s model elephants and Punch and Judy puppets; Martin Parr’s Soviet space dog memorabilia and 20th century British postcards; Sol LeWitt’s Japanese prints, modernist photographs and music scores, and Pae White’s textiles by prolific American designer Vera Neumann. London-based ceramicist Edmund de Waal has lent an assortment of objects and archaeological fragments from his childhood collection, as well as some of his pieces of Japanese netsuke. De Waal famously wrote the Hare With Amber Eyes, which focuses on his collection, as well as his family. “Some wonderful things have come out of bringing the exhibition to the Sainsbury Centre,” Ghislaine points out. “For example, we knew the amazing, super-kitsch collection of Andy Warhol’s American cookie jars would be coming and it prompted us to include his picture of the dog Pom, which relates really well to the cookie jars in its colours and style. But we have also included another piece, called Shopping Bag, which we realised we had right here in the Sainsbury Collection and would be a lovely addition.” Magnificent Obsessions takes place on the lower level of the SCVA but upstairs there are various complementary displays. Works drawn from Howard Hodgkin’s collection of Indian

Magnificent Obsessions is also moving out beyond the walls of the iconic gallery, right into the homes of avid collectors who are not artists. Members of the public are able to submit images and descriptions of their own collections for possible inclusion at the end of the exhibition and on the SCVA website. These are rotated regularly and aim to bring yet another dimension to the exploration of the concept of collecting. “What is wonderful about this exhibition is that it is so varied that there really is something here for everyone,” Ghislaine adds. “And it is an exhibition that children should enjoy too – after all, children are often the most obsessive collectors among us.” Magnificent Obsessions: The Artist as Collector runs until Sunday 24 January 2016 For more information call 01603 593199 or visit www.scva.ac.uk

“Take a glance through a looking glass – where maybe the grass really is greener on the other side.” Escape into the world of Samuel Thomas’s paintings where picture perfect moments exude with intense colour combinations and intricate patterns; influences range from pop art, art deco and psychedelic styles. There is a sense of nostalgia and timelessness surrounding Samuel’s artwork and his distinctive painting style is reminiscent of the iconic 1920s’ “come to the seaside” railway posters. A Norfolk based artist with a refreshing perspective and painting style that is truly unique, euphoric and mesmerising. Down to a fine art

The work of some of East Anglia’s finest artists is to be displayed in major exhibitions at Picturecraft Gallery in Holt this autumn

I

t has been a phenomenal year for Adrian Hill, owner of Picturecraft Gallery and Adrian Hill Fine Art, in Holt. Not only have successful shows been mounted in both Norfolk galleries but a major exhibition of the work of Rosa Sepple was also held in London in association with the renowned Mall Galleries. International, award-winning Rosa is a self-taught artist who is known for her striking, figurative work, which is based on water colour and collage. She has exhibited with leading British galleries, including the Royal Academy, and staged numerous, highly successful solo exhibitions. “I wrote a book, Out of the Blue, for the show and this was launched at the exhibition,” Adrian explains. “The whole event was incredibly successful: we ended up selling well over half the 122 paintings that were featured in the book. Rosa is a very exciting painter and we always have a very healthy stock of her work at Adrian Hill Fine Art.” His next focus, however, will be a major exhibition for the Institute of East Anglian Artists (IEA). Representing established artists of the area, as well as those who are up-and-coming, the institute’s show opens at Picturecraft on Friday 30 October and runs until Tuesday 10 November. “This is a relatively new group that was set up by me and Brian Ryder, a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI), in order to promote art in East Anglia and the quality of artists we have in the region.” The aim of the IEA is to organise exhibitions for its full and associate members, as well as open events for other East Anglian artists who are looking to be represented by the institute. This exhibition is open to new artists as well as members. “Last year we selected about 130 paintings from the couple of hundred that were submitted and this year we are expecting even more submissions,” says Adrian.

Then on Friday 13 November the gallery turns its attentions to the work of Norfolk-based Wrenford Thatcher, with a solo exhibition, which runs through until Wednesday 18 November. “Wrenford was quite fascinated by his two grandfathers who were engine drivers and this exhibition reflects his passions for both steam trains and paintings. Not only will it be interesting because there will be some fabulous new pieces in it but it will also be a consummate history of the age of steam and will include many East Anglian railway paintings.” Picturecraft has long been recognised for showcasing the work of some of Britain’s most prestigious painters. At Adrian Hill Fine Art all the artists represented have been carefully selected from the Royal Academy or royal institutions, federations or societies – and the collection also showcases individual works by established British artists. “There is always something exciting happening here,” says Adrian. “We have some lovely new pieces, from artists such as Deborah Walker RI and Lucy McKie ROI, for example. “But, at the same time, we are still cherry picking the work of past masters and some of the greatest living artists of our time. At the moment we even have a David Hockney for sale.”

UNIQUELY AWAY AUTUMN 2015

Can you tell us what you have been busy with recently? Well, we are delighted that it’s now 21 years since we first opened a gallery here in Lavenham, a real cause for celebration. Over the years we have been discovered by large numbers of people coming to the village, who then became collectors of my paintings. They always enjoy coming back to explore more of Suffolk and seek out the locations I use in my work. Last April I exhibited with Trevor Woods in the Colours of Norfolk exhibition at Gallery Plus, in Wells-next-the-Sea, which went very well. It was great fun showing with Trevor and Jo, as my work is a complete opposite to Trevor’s very precise paintings. It was also a good chance to explore more of Norfolk, and to use this experience in my work.

When does your Under a Suffolk Sky exhibition open and run until? My new exhibition begins on Saturday 7 November and will continue through until Sunday 20 December (during the exhibition we will be open every day apart from Mondays). The exhibition will run for a bit longer this year: people sometimes travel quite long distances to see the exhibition and it gives them a better chance to plan a visit, and possibly stay for a few days at the same time. How did you come up with the title? The theme seems very apt, as I have mostly concentrated on my work in Suffolk during the past year. Suffolk is full of terrific locations to base my paintings around, and I am fortunate to live in a very peaceful spot, where I can

just fall out of my door into fields and tracks full of my subject matter. And then with the open skies and light that we get, it seemed the perfect title. How many pieces of work will it include and when did you start working on them? I always spend a year painting for this exhibition, and I need that much time to produce a body of work of this size. We have about 85 paintings for the show, and these will also feature in a limited edition book produced to accompany the exhibition. Can you tell us about one or two of the pieces and where you gained inspiration for them? I do a number of paintings in my garden each year. I try to record any wildlife the garden attracts –

it’s a very peaceful haven, especially for birds and butterflies, and I try to make it as ecologically able to support these populations as I can. One of my favourite birds is the robin, and I make drawings and studies of my resident robins when the opportunity arises. One of the paintings, which will feature in the exhibition, is of one of the garden robins, and we will be using this image as the small limited edition print, which comes with the book. Further afield, I discovered a magical little village – Hawkedon – and drew and painted the cottages and church both in the heart of the village and along the secret lanes nearby. Are you taking any new directions with this exhibition? I’m always looking at new subject matter and places that give

me inspiration. I am fascinated by certain places and return to them over and over because of the changing light, weather and time of year – every place can look so different every time. My other priority is to always experiment with different materials and ways of working with the paint. This gives the work a vitality and enthusiasm as it is constantly evolving and moving forwards. Hopefully my passion for painting comes over in my work. I think everyone who comes to the exhibition each year sees something new and fresh in the work. What can those spending time at the exhibition expect? I hope a wide range of subjects: although the subject of the exhibition is “Suffolk,” the county itself is so varied and rich. I love snow, the sea

and the fantastic Suffolk landscape. What would you like to concentrate on with your work next year? I will be working on my November 2016 show all year. But I am also intending to return to my roots as a printmaker – my studies at college were children’s book illustration and printmaking, and I have always intended to get back to making original prints. I was very fortunate to get hold of an Albion Press dated 1844 – I used one very similar at art college – and fully intend to make good use of it! 1 Towards Hawkedon, 2 March Lane, 3 Stallington Wood, 4 April Fields, 5 Dandelions and Oxeye Daisies, 6 Harvest Field, 7 Robin and Rosehips, photography by Lee Curtis

in the mezzanine space at the Norwich gallery. It will feature drawings, paintings, photographs and iconic posters in the elegant, decorative style the artist became globally recognised for.

Now an exhibition exploring his work is to open at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts (SCVA), bringing with it 60 pieces from the collection of the Mucha Trust, including the iconic Gismonda, the Czech artist’s first poster designed for the actress Sarah Bernhardt.

Deputy director of the SCVA, Ghislaine Wood says: “Alphonse Mucha was the leading Art Nouveau designer of the era. He worked at the turn of the century creating these beautiful images and was one of the first people to bring art into advertising.”

Alphonse Mucha: In Quest of Beauty opens on Saturday 7 November 2015 and runs until Sunday 20 March 2016

The innovative design for the production of Gismonda that premiered in 1894 at the Théâtre de la Renaissance

in Paris was later described by Mucha as “a breath of fresh air,” which the public had been looking for. People were drawn to the beauty of the work and it resulted in commissions for a range of advertising designs for everything from cultural events and railway services to consumer products, such as perfume, cigarette paper, beer, champagne, chocolate and biscuits, as well as bicycles. His work reflected the rich texture of modern life in fin-de-siècle Paris and became synonymous with the Art Nouveau movement, says Ghislaine.

and was pleased his creations could be seen beyond the walls of private drawing rooms.

And his posters and panels featuring a single figure or the head of a seductive woman against a halo-like disk, arranged with flowers and other decorative motifs, are now instantly recognisable.

The term Art Nouveau is used to describe a group of styles that flourished in Europe and America between 1890 and 1905. It was popularised by Siegfried Bing, who opened a gallery in Paris in 1895 called La Maison de L’Art Nouveau, and it swept across Europe in a matter of a few years.

“Today we are so used to seeing women in advertising but he was also one of the first people to do this – through his wonderfully decorative work he used women and beauty to promote the idea of consuming products.”

“What is particularly exciting for us about the Alphonse Mucha exhibition is that we have our own significant collection of Art Nouveau pieces here at the Sainsbury Centre,” she adds.

Like artists of the British Arts and Crafts movement, Mucha (1860 to 1939) believed beautiful works of art should improve the quality of people’s lives

“It is considered to be one of the most important private collections in the country and gives us a connection to this exhibition. Our plan is to add one or two pieces of our own for people to enjoy as well.” Alphonse Mucha: 1 Rêverie, 1897. Colour lithograph, © Mucha Trust 2015. 2 Label for Lefèvre-Utile Gaufrettes Vanille. As autumn falls… …discover the secrets of

O

n the banks of the River Ant, at the heart of the Norfolk Broads, the How Hill Nature Reserve and Secret Gardens have much to entice the autumn visitor. Not only do the surroundings erupt into glorious colour, explains Simon Partridge, director of the How Hill Trust, but there is also an abundance of winter wildlife to spot.

HILL

Visitors can use the public car park free of charge and walk across the meadow down to the River Ant and How Hill Staithe. From here there are beautiful views out across the water and of the landmark Turf Fen Windpump. “People can also stroll over to our secret water gardens, which are hidden away in the woods and are now open every day of the year – they are signposted via

How Hill Woods, which are an absolute picture in the autumn,” he says. “We are lucky here – if the conditions are right then we get the most fantastic reds, oranges and golds.” Visitors can easily while away a couple of hours at How Hill in the autumn or winter, he suggests. A boardwalk runs around about one-third of the gardens, making much of it accessible to

everyone. The paths through the woods can be harder going with pushchairs, wheelchairs or mobility scooters if there has been heavy rain. “Wherever you go, however, there is always plenty to enjoy: you may see members of our healthy otter population, in the river or in the water gardens, and there are Chinese water deer, muntjac and roe deer too.”

Short-eared owls, merlin raptors, thrushes and finches may also be spotted, along with an abundance of autumn migratory birds and winter visitors.

“Other than salt water, we have every other kind of habitat you can expect to find in the Norfolk Broads – wet woodland, dry woodland, marshes, meadows and dykes.”

“You may well see lots of ducks, and possibly marsh and hen harriers too,” Simon adds. “Most of the winter visitors to East Anglia could well be seen here as the habitat we have is truly exceptional.

and flint building now offers nine bedrooms, all with en suite bathrooms and newly decorated, with a fresh coastal feel. There is also a bar, dining area and comfortable seating.

After a bracing walk along the point or a perhaps a more leisurely stroll beside the sea wall to spot over-wintering birds, those arriving to eat, drink or stay for the night will find the wood-burner stoked up and the atmosphere pleasantly informal.

“We have a beautiful conservatory, with a glass roof, which is a lovely light space to dine in and as the weather warms up next spring and summer, people will also be welcome to sit out in our sheltered courtyard.”

Owned by Adnams, and overlooking the Quay at Blakeney, the character-filled pub has recently undergone a complete refurbishment. But, explains general manager for Adnams Hotels and Inns Martin Edwards, the aim was always to retain the cosy ambience and the friendly welcome.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served to residents and non-residents when the White Horse is open and all the food has a distinctly local flavour, with

“The idea was to give the rooms a new look that was in keeping with Blakeney and the area while also retaininging the character and vitality of what was here already,” he says. “We have a lot of visitors who come to Blakeney to watch the birds, see the seals or walk their dogs – some are new to the area but others live here or come regularly. It is nice to have that mixture of customers.” Believed to have once been a coaching inn, with stables at the back, the brick

dishes including the likes of Cley Smokehouse haddock and chorizo fishcake, with sesame and soy dressing, Adnams Broadside BLT ciabatta and salt cod, leek and potato Norfolk saffron chowder. “We also have up to eight daily changing specials, depending on the fish or seafood that has come in that morning,” Martin says. “This autumn and winter there will still be plenty of fish on the menu but we will have plenty of local game too.” As expected, the White Horse serves a full range of Adnams beers and spirits, as well as a broad selection of other drinks. And this year, for the first time, it will be open for food and drinks over the Christmas period. “We are looking forward to being busy this season and to preparing a festive menu,” Martin says. “Autumn is a nice time of year to book a room or to reserve a table for a meal – or people can just come in, sit down beside the wood-burner and relax for a while over a nice drink as they warm up!” Photography courtesy of Adnams For more information call the White Horse on 01263 740574 or visit adnams.co.uk/hotels/the-white-horse

quick glance at the autumn menus at the Westleton Crown reveals not only its familiar emphasis on fresh Suffolk produce but also perhaps a new simplicity in its dishes. James Finch has returned as head chef to the hotel, pub and restaurant on the Suffolk Heritage Coast, explains general manager Gareth Clarke, and with him he brings a firm focus on the traditional. “As an industry I think we sometimes twist things too much and it gets confusing for our customers,” says Gareth. “People want to see what they are expecting on their plates and when this is good, simple food made with local ingredients they really appreciate it.” James, he explains, is passionate about using ingredients that are not only in season but are also sourced from as close to the restaurant, which has two AA Rosettes, as possible. He knows the surroundings well and has good connections with local farmers and food producers. “There are some twists on the dishes James serves but the simplicity and

quality of the food he is serving is going down extremely well with our customers.” This includes, for example, the likes of roasted tenderloin and slow-cooked cheek of Blythburgh pork, with fondant potato, celeriac purée, Savoy cabbage and an Aspall Cyder jus, as well as roast breast of Suffolk chicken, with Lyonnaise potato, cavolo nero, sun-blushed tomato and Madeira cream sauce. “James is very much into game and I certainly think that will be a focus this autumn, with venison on the menu,” Gareth continues. “I think we will also see some delicious cold weather food, such as suet puddings, too.” With its roaring fires, real ales and relaxed atmosphere, the Westleton Crown is always popular at this time of year. Customers include those who stop by for a meal or a drink while they are out and about experiencing the beauty of the Southwold and Aldeburgh area, as well as others coming to stay for longer, in one of the 34 stylish bedrooms. Dating back to the 12th century, the

traditional Suffolk coaching inn is known for its combination of warm character and contemporary comforts. Its bar is appealing for its local pub atmosphere but customers can also choose to dine in the cosy parlour or airy garden room. “Christmas is always a busy time for us. Our Christmas and New Year’s Eve breaks are popular and then, of course, people book for parties, private gatherings and nights out too,” he points out. “Our Christmas menu will be running throughout December and, again, it will feature some good, traditional dishes, such as roast turkey, roasted potatoes, cranberry sauce, chestnut and sage stuffing and turkey gravy. This year, however, we are going to mix it up a little with our Christmas pudding, serving our own version – a chocolate and cranberry Christmas pudding, with Baileys ice cream.” Photography courtesy of Westleton Crown For more information on the Westleton Crown call 01728 648777 or visit www.westletoncrown.co.uk

From field to fork Traditional British beef, locally grown vegetables and plenty of seasonal Suffolk delicacies – Emmerdale Farm is busily preparing for Christmas

T

here is always something happening at Emmerdale Farm, where husband-and-wife team Jeremy and Wendy Thickitt rear traditional British cattle breeds and run a lively shop. Since buying the farm, near Yoxford, in Suffolk, 12 years ago they have expanded the on-site business, selling their own meat, as well as other local and regional produce. They rear a variety of breeds, including red poll, Aberdeen angus, Hereford, belted Galloway and shorthorn, explains Jeremy. And, with the introduction of an in-house butchery, now offer a much greater range of products. “We graze our cattle on our marshes in the summer, and then bring the red polls up to drier land to be out wintered; they are fed maize, hay and barley, which is all grown on our land,” he says. “We find the red polls grow a thick warm coat and are so healthy that even the coldest weather does not affect them.”

and burgers in the shop; there is also free-range pork, lamb, poultry and game, which has been reared locally by other producers. “We also sell homemade pies, local bread and milk, and seasonal vegetables, plus the usual farm shop goodies, such as jams and chutneys. This autumn we will also have free range turkeys, reared in Bramfield and Cratfield, as well as home-cured hams and homemade pork pies. The farm shop starts taking orders for the festive season in October and we urge customers to request Christmas poultry as early as possible so we can guarantee the correct size of bird.” Last year Wendy’s sister Zoe Fordham launched the Red Poll Tearooms on site and now customers can also enjoy a light

lunch or tea while they are shopping, ordering or simply browsing. “She sells gorgeous, homemade cakes and also serves hearty breakfasts using ingredients from our butchery,” he explains. Jeremy says people are much more interested in where their meat comes from these days and members of his team are always happy to answer questions about provenance and to explain the best cooking techniques. “We offer a large enough selection of foods here for any daily shop or formal dinner party – and throughout December there will also be regular tastings,” he says. “Then after Christmas we will oversee a major refurbishment of the farm shop and expansion of the kitchen cooking facility. We are now making more pies than ever – and every year we just seem to get busier.” Photography courtesy of Emmerdale Farm Shop

hose staying at the Suffolk Escape often wish to enjoy nothing more than just unwinding in the warmth and luxury of their self-catering cabin. Owner Andrew Bryce says the exclusive, adult-only destination appeals to those seeking complete tranquillity within a picturesque, lakeside setting. “Our guests come here to relax, spend time together and make the most of the high quality of the log cabins,” he says. “We have had a busy summer, with people enjoying the hot tubs and spending time out on the decks beside the water, but autumn and winter are also wonderful times of the year to come.” Tucked away in the heart of the Suffolk countryside, on a 300-acre farm, the Suffolk Escape has four luxury log cabins. Within easy reach of Ipswich, the

Heritage Coast and charming Suffolk villages, the cabins each have two bedrooms, a private dining deck and a hot tub. “At this time of year people can relax by their wood-burning stoves, with a good book or a board game – or they can settle down to a DVD. Our private chef is often busy in the autumn and winter with our guests choosing to book him to come and cook some fantastic food for them, and we can also arrange special beauty treatments in the cabins if people would like them,” Andrew says. “There are also some fabulous walks in the area, with plenty to see at this time of year. There are lots of birds as we are so close to an RSPB nature reserve and someone even saw a kingfisher on the rail of the deck.” There is plenty of delicious autumnal

produce available for guests to enjoy and, as Christmas approaches, independent shops and boutiques in nearby villages and towns start to display new ranges of products, and festive markets and fairs appear at weekends. “In winter, however, we find that a lot of people come for short breaks because they just want to stop and get off the crazy wheel of life for a while – and this is the perfect place to do so,” says Andrew. “We are very pleased that more than one-third of our bookings are now people who are returning and that we are one of the few places on Tripadvisor, which has five out of five feedback from our guests.” Photography courtesy of the Suffolk Escape For more information call 01473 652149 or visit www.suffolkescape.co.uk

horpeness Golf, Hotel and Country Club invites its guests to celebrate a traditional British Christmas on the Suffolk coast. Those booking for the festive period itself are welcomed on Christmas Eve with mince pies, mulled wine and traditional Christmas carols in front of

a roaring fire in the clubhouse bar, before a champagne reception and three-course dinner, explains Lorraine Mitcham, events manager. “And with our Christmas golf packages, they can walk from their bedroom to the first tee in under a minute and play our James Braid-designed heathland golf course. Our mild micro-climate, low rainfall and quick drying soil mean our golf course stays open an average of 360 days a year and is perfect for building an appetite before Christmas dinner!” She continues: “On Boxing Day, guests can enter our Christmas golf competition or simply relax in a leather armchair by the roaring log fire in the clubhouse and read the papers or play Aldeburgh Monopoly. If they want to take in the fresh sea air, they can stroll by the Meare – the boating lake, which inspired JM Barrie to write his children’s

Heritage Hideaways NORFOLK AND SUFFOLK

ith a portfolio of approximately 80 high quality holiday homes in beautiful locations across Norfolk and Suffolk, Heritage Hideaways always has something new and interesting for guests to consider.

This summer the company took on Lampland House, at Walberswick, explains owner Marion Anthony. This sleeps six people in three bedrooms and has been beautifully renovated by its current owners. “It is in a private position and has an attractive New England look and a really interesting architecturally styled garden,” she explains. “Then as soon as you step inside there is even more wow factor. It has a very relaxing and stylish interior, with a lovely, spacious hall and two of the bedrooms, one of which has an en suite shower room, on the ground floor. “There is also another bathroom and the beautiful kitchen, which has an electric Aga, and the living area on this level. The master bedroom, with its stunning en suite shower room and a balcony, is upstairs.” She continues: “This is quite an

unusual property for Walberswick – most of the others we have here are more traditional cottages – but it enjoys all the same benefits of being in the pretty seaside village on the Suffolk Heritage Coast and is lovely to stay in all year round.” Photography courtesy of Heritage Hideaways For more information call 01502 724782 or visit www.heritagehideaways.com

ith approximately 300 different holiday homes on its books Norfolk Hideaways can offer accommodation for all seasons. Owner Hetti Simpson explains the business, which operates from offices in Wells-next-the-Sea and Burnham Deepdale, specialises in offering properties from Snettisham right round to Mundesley. “We have a really nice variety of

different kinds of places,” she says. “Our business has grown and we have more properties and a higher level of occupancy. Because of that we have taken on more staff and now have someone in a dedicated guest liaison role and someone else to look after taking on new properties. We put a lot of effort into making sure we offer a friendly, professional and efficient service to both our valued home owners and our guests alike.” Among the diverse properties offered by Norfolk Hideaways, for example, are the Magazine and Osier Carr Barn. The Magazine, at Sedgeford, which sleeps five in three bedrooms, was built in the style of a chapel in 1642 (at the time of Oliver Cromwell and the Civil War) to disguise its real use as an ammunition store. “Then Osier Carr Barn is one of our

larger properties, sleeping nine people in five bedrooms,” she adds. “It is in a beautiful location at Tatterford and is a wonderful conversion, with some fabulous features, such as a rotating wood-burner and a sauna,” she adds. legant town houses with open fires in period fireplaces or rustic cottages with roaring wood-burning stoves – Sowerbys Holiday Cottages offers more than 250 exceptional holiday homes, many of which are perfect for autumn and winter breaks. Company owner Andrea Sowerby says this time of year is the perfect time to retreat to scenic Norfolk for a holiday. “Not only are there beautiful places

to visit and walk but we have so many fantastic pubs and restaurants that are wonderful in the autumn and winter,” she says. “More than 70 per cent have an open fire or wood-burning stove.” Visitors might like to try Hope Cottage, at Holme-next-the-Sea, for example, an early 16th century Norfolk brick and flint cottage, which has been completely renovated and sleeps two. “This is right on the edge of Redwell Marshes and the Peddars Way. There is a new garden room, with a wood-burning stove and under-floor heating, and the sitting room has a stove too,” she says. “Then we have One Manor Farm Barns, which is a fantastic newly converted Norfolk barn, sleeping eight and with a lovely, large open-plan sitting area, where the original stone barn wall is exposed and there is a wood-burning stove.”

She adds: “Then if people want to have a nice winter break somewhere with lovely shops, such as Burnham Market, they could look at something like the House on the Green, a beautiful Grade II Listed property, which can sleep up to six, and has an open fireplace and is right on the village green.” Photography courtesy of Sowerbys Holiday Cottages For more information call 01328 730880 or visit www.sowerbysholidaycottages.co.uk

ith a portfolio of 25 different properties, Emily Bidwell of Luxury City Apartments is confident she can find something to suit the tastes of most visitors to the Norwich area. Much of her serviced accommodation is situated at the very centre of the historic city, within walking distance of some of its finest sights, while other properties are within a five-mile radius of Norwich, offering proximity to other Norfolk beauty spots as well. “What all the apartments and houses have in common is the high level of service,” Emily explains. “Whether someone is staying in a one-bedroom apartment or a larger country cottage,

“Bed linen and towels are provided; there is free wifi and parking, most of which is off-road, and for those who are booking for longer stays, the accommodation is cleaned and bed linen and towels laundered weekly.” The idea, she explains, is to be able to visit Norfolk for a holiday or on business without having to worry about home comforts.

Of the city centre apartments, nine are located at the iconic Samson and Hercules, with its unusual portico featuring columns shaped like the heroes. Set on Tombland, in the historic Cathedral Quarter of Norwich, the apartment development itself is modern and stylish yet offers fabulous access to the city’s Medieval streets, spectacular cathedral and many cafés, restaurants, bars and shops.

She is therefore interested in hearing from anyone with property they might like to let. “Norwich is such a wonderful place to visit and Norfolk has so much to enjoy as well,” she says. “And what could be better than arriving at your luxury apartment for a break and having nothing more to do than to unpack your belongings?” Norwich photography by Nick Read, except Quayside; other photography courtesy of Luxury City Apartments For more information on Luxury City Apartments call 07771 881456 or visit www.lcapartments.co.uk

I N D E P E N D E N T T H I N K I N G Bright, beautiful, interesting and elegant – independent retailers in Norfolk and Suffolk have some exciting items to browse this Christmas FRAMLINGHAM, SUFFOLK

Crafty Mrs Fox

icola Grayson has always had an artistic flair and a love of creating unusual crafts but it was only earlier this year that she started making a name for herself with her silverwork. Now working as Crafty Mrs Fox she produces the most exquisite fine silverwork – earrings, necklaces, rings and cufflinks all crafted to her own design and created through a fascinating process. “I was really excited to come across a relatively new product called silver clay,” she explains. “All the silver within it is reclaimed from things like computer pieces and photographic equipment and then mixed with woodchip and water to become a clay; this is then moulded and shaped, and air-dried. It is then fired in a kiln, which sinters it, removing the woodchip binder and just

N

leaving the beautiful silver.” This 99.9 per cent fine silver (purer than sterling silver) can then be polished, burnished and treated as normal silver: “I mostly like my pieces to have a simple, contemporary style, with a satin finish,” she says. “Occasionally the very edges might have a mirror shine.” Nicola crafts her pieces in her workshop at home. There she works to commission and produces her beautiful pieces to sell at a range of markets, including Framlingham Market, on most Saturdays, Snape Maltings Vintage and Makers’ Market and Woodbridge Vintage and Modern Market. “I think people often like to meet the maker when they buy a piece because it is nice to hear how it has been made,” she suggests. “For me, it is also important to meet the people who are wearing the

jewellery and to have their feedback.” Nicola is continually developing her work. She is starting to bring turquoise into some of her silver pieces and continues to focus on the other areas of craftwork she enjoys, including needle felt. “I love what I do,” she says. “I am so pleased to be making jewellery from something that has been recycled and I also embrace the handmade nature of what I do – and the little imperfections in my work. We live in a world where so much is mass produced that it is nice to be able to create something that is special because it is handmade and unique.” Photography courtesy of Crafty Mrs Fox For more information call 07896 704482 or visit www.craftymrsfox.com

Oriental Rugs of Norwich n the heart of the city, Oriental Rugs of Norwich has been supplying its magnificent handmade products for more than 30 years now. Owner James Durrant has run the business since the mid-1980s and personally selects every item that is displayed in the showroom on Bedford Street. “Everything we have here is Oriental – from countries such as India, Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan – and it is all handmade and hand-knotted,” he explains. Over the years he has seen demand for different styles and colours change as interior design trends have evolved and makers in the countries of origin have responded by producing contemporary shades and patterns, as well as more traditional ones. Customers can visit the Norwich showroom to see what is available or can

look online. Arrangements can be made for rugs to be taken away and tried out at home on an approval basis – or a selection can even be brought to the house. “We have lots of customers who have bought one or two pieces from us for

Recently relocated from Norwich, the store sells pieces ranging from large items of bedroom furniture to smaller gifts and accessories.

“We select furniture of a high quality and that we know our customers will like – everything is either in reproduction French style or contemporary,” explains Tracy. “We try to ensure there is always something new and different for customers to come and look at.” Among the many pieces are Frenchstyle beds, chairs and dining furniture,

as well as mirrors, coffee tables and chests of drawers. Some customers visit the store when they have a whole room to furnish while others might be looking for one particular piece. “We can always advise people as to which pieces work together,” she says. “It can sometimes work well if they mix and match the styles.” In the run-up to Christmas, accessories and decorative items are especially popular. “There are some lovely photo frames, perfume bottles, jewellery boxes and candles sticks,” she says. “We also have some beautiful mirrors and unusual items, including stags’ heads, which are often popular with the men.” Photography courtesy of Shades of Elegance For more information call 01508 218288 or visit www.shades-of-elegance.co.uk

Heirloom Toys and Clothing he shelves in Heirloom Toys and Clothing in Burnham Market and Sheringham are overflowing with colourful toys, interesting books and pens, paper, paint and other arts and crafts items. Owner Annie GordonGroom chooses each item with such care and attention that it is easy to see why they are irresistible to children and adults alike. “I do have a checklist,” she admits. “The clothing is all organic and either Fairtrade or fairly traded, and has to have a nice soft feel to it; the toys are all of a good quality and must be something I think a small child will just love.” While the idea is to encourage the development of children in safety – wooden toys are environmentally friendly and plastic items are made from recycled plastic and are chemical-free

– her philosophy is also to offer things that children will immediately want to sit down and play with. And Annie, who has four children and three grandchildren of her own, also wants her customers to know they can come in, browse and discuss gift ideas for as long as they like. “We have so many different things, some starting from as little as 50p and many that make ideal birthday presents for under £5,” she says. “When people

buy something it is gift-wrapped and popped in a bag – we want everything we sell to have that little bit of magic. We want to create a wonderful experience here so that whether they have chosen it themselves or someone else has bought it for them, every child’s eyes light up when they unwrap something from one of our shops.” Photography courtesy of Heirloom Toys and Clothing For more information call 01328 738950 or visit www.heirloomtoysandclothing.co.uk

The African Emporium he African Emporium on Lower Goat Lane is filled with baskets of all shapes, sizes and colours. The beautifully handwoven goods, which range from coasters and other small pieces that could be held in the palm of the hand right up to enormous laundry baskets and other containers for standing on the floor, have all been chosen and imported from Senegal by business owner Samantha Everitt. Samantha, who also teaches the African djembe drum, started off by selling the baskets at festivals and quickly realised how popular they were. She ran pop-up shops in Norwich for Christmas 2013 and 2014 and then decided to open a more permanent base: “I travel to Senegal about twice a year and choose everything while I am there – a few things come from other parts of West Africa but most of it is

T

made locally by the people I buy from,” she explains. The vibrant baskets she has become known for are made from seagrass. The thin pieces of coloured plastic used to hold the weave together in some of the objects are recycled from matting. As well as the baskets, the shop stocks a small range of clothing, cushions, jewellery, carved animals and other unusual gifts, which are always popular at Christmas. And Samantha also sells shea butter, which she refines herself. “I have bracelets here that start at 50p and my largest basket is £80 – I try to stock a complete range and to make sure there is always something different for people to see,” she adds. The beauty of BESPOKE his autumn at Francis Wain Jewellers they are expecting to see demand for vintage jewellery and rose gold continue to grow.

And, of course, as Christmas approaches, watches and diamond and gold gift sets are likely to be highly sought-after too. But, explains, Mallory Wilkinson, inhouse designer at the exclusive Norfolk jewellers, which has shops in King’s Lynn and at Chapelfield, in Norwich, bespoke pieces are also becoming an increasingly popular option. “We may be living in a world filled with choices, but it can often be difficult to find just what you’re looking for or have in mind,” she says. “Creating an individual design takes all of that away;

we listen to an individual’s needs and then customise each and every design until it is 100 per cent perfect for them. We create the perfect piece and tailor it to their own personal style and budget.” The bespoke journey takes approximately two months from start to finish. All Mallory needs to begin the process is an idea, which may be

7

something as simple as a colour, shape, number of stones or style of setting. “I then take that notion and produce several designs, taking into consideration all the preferences, and then sit with the customer to talk about their ideas. Once I’ve put together a few designs I like to meet with them again to discuss in detail which elements they absolutely love and which, if any, they would like to change or incorporate from other design options. It is vital at this stage they leave excited and truly pleased with every element of their dream piece,” she says. “Our customers are as involved as they choose to be. Many enjoy being a part of the process and in particular find choosing their own stones and learning about them incredibly interesting.”

“I explained to Mallory what I wanted and she drew up some designs and given the costs for both. If I wanted a design tweaked a bit, it was no problem.

“Many prospective husbands and wives have come to us to create their own unique engagement rings, as well as tailored wedding bands to fit around them,” says Mallory, who also designs bespoke pieces to sell in the shop.

“Depending on the customer’s desires, I can either make subtle changes to modernise an old piece, while

maintaining its character and meaning, or remove the stones, melt down the gold and create something entirely different,” says Mallory. And, she adds: “We encourage anyone who has jewellery they do not wear for any reason just sitting in their jewellery box, to consider having it remodelled. By bringing it to us, we can create something different from it – and they will then be able to enjoy wearing it once again.” Photography by Hanover Saffron and Mallory Wilkinson

rom outerwear suitable for a long walk on a cold day to outfits ideal for the pub or supper with friends, Gun Hill Clothing Company aims to offer everything its customers might need for a weekend in the country.

Owner Nick Fryer explains the first shop was opened in Burnham Market in 1994, originally to offer men’s casual clothing. Two years later, however, more space was created and ladies’ collections were added – and shops then opened in Holt in Norfolk, Southwold in Suffolk and Saffron Walden in Essex. “All our stores are in attractive old buildings, which are full of beams and features,” he explains. “And in addition to a wide selection of brands, including White Stuff, Ralph Lauren, Gant and Hackett, we have an ever increasing range from Gun Hill itself.” Gun Hill products are mainly made in the UK and include shirts from Northern Ireland, jeans from Yorkshire, socks from Leicestershire, Scottish knitwear and even handmade belts

from Hackney, London. “There are ranges of clothes for all ages. From the more unusual, such as Scotch and Soda, to a huge range of stylish yet practical items from Barbour and Barbour International. There are Gaucho belts from Argentina and Dubarry boots from Ireland. We have moleskin trousers and the famous RM Williams boots from Australia,” he adds. “We also have a huge range of gifts for Christmas, with particular favourites including the Made in the UK multicoloured socks and some beautiful leather goods.” Photography courtesy of Gun Hill Clothing Company For more information on Gun Hill Clothing Company call 01328 730015 or visit www.gunhill.co.uk

hen Katie Mayes opened the Norfolk Boutique in Coltishall her aim was to create a “destination boutique.” Today she offers a relaxed shopping experience within what she describes as a “living room-style space” in a beautiful Grade II Listed building. “We opened in April 2014 after several months of research, planning and buying. I knew for about two years before that this was something I wanted to do and set about honing the skills required to make it happen,” she explains. “My career history lies mainly in accountancy and project management, both of which have been more than useful in setting up my own business. I then set about learning all I could regarding fashion buying and how to create a relaxed but sophisticated retail space.” Today the Norfolk Boutique stocks designer womenswear and handbags, as well as designer children’s clothing from Lilly and Sid. The retail space, although small, comes complete with comfortable seating, free tea and coffee and even a glass of bubbly on Saturdays. “We are especially proud of stocking UK handbag brand Lamb 1887,” Katie says. “These bags are becoming a firm celebrity favourite and are designed in

this country and made with the finest Italian leather. We are also one of the only stockists in the area of Henri Lloyd womenswear, which is perfect given our proximity to the Norfolk Broads.” There is clothing to appeal to women of all ages, she continues. The Lilly and Sid children’s range was only introduced in late summer 2015. “It just seemed that many of our customers were coming in with small children and commenting on the lack of availability of designer children’s clothing outside Norwich city centre,” she says. “In the future we would certainly like to look at stocking menswear as we keep getting asked about that too.” This Christmas the Norfolk Boutique has an abundance of gift ideas, from Henri Lloyd roll neck jumpers in grey and off-white from to ponchos and scarves arriving shortly from Scottish woollen mill Johnstons of Elgin. “We have a very relaxed shop, where every customer is left to browse in peace and there is never any pressure to buy,” she adds. “And our prices range from £20 to £250 so we would hope there is something here for everyone.” Photography courtesy of the Norfolk Boutique For more information call 07786 167724 or visit www.thenorfolkboutique.co.uk

he beautiful high ceilings and natural light of the converted school building in Castle Rising have made the perfect backdrop for the boutique Cheryl Daubney had always wanted to open. “I always felt there was a lack of independent boutiques in the King’s Lynn area,” she explains. “I started the business in East Rudham but moved to the centre of Castle Rising at the end of February 2015 because these wonderful premises came up. I had always felt that we’d ended up with high streets dominated by chain stores that largely concentrated on youngsters and so I wanted to concentrate on offering stylish clothing for those of about 35 years and upwards.” She also, she continues, wanted to offer high quality clothing that was individual and not simply for special occasions: “I wanted to find clothes that were wearable all the time.” Today Allez Chic offers an eclectic range of styles, from beautiful soft knits to smart dresses, colourful jackets and tailored skirts. There are styles to suit

those who prefer a classic look, as well as others who might be looking for higher fashion. This autumn and winter the boutique is offering fashion collections from British and continental fashion houses, says Cheryl, who also likes to run popup shops at charity events. “We have a lot of Danish brands, which are always popular because of their appealing designs and high quality fabric. Then we have a lot of knitwear – graphic prints are big this year – and I do like to introduce quite a lot of colour. Although grey and black are prevalent this season I like to spice the autumn up with some colour!” When it comes to choosing gifts for Christmas, there is a good range of leather handbags at Allez Chic, as well as high quality scarves, from the likes of Fraas; Cheryl also hopes to be stocking a selection of gloves from French company Glove Story and woollen capes from Pierre Quioc. “We have some really exciting gift ideas here in lovely colours, patterns and designs, as well as some rather nice warm coats and other items not generally found on the high street.” Photography courtesy of Allez Chic For more information call 01553 631915 or visit www.allezchic.co.uk

ore than 20 years’ experience and an in-depth knowledge of the market meant Martha Fraser knew exactly what was required when it came to opening her Newmarket boutique. Today people travel from Norwich and even London to visit her town centre shop, which is known as much for its relaxed atmosphere as it is for the leading brands it offers. “In my years of managing fashion outlets I built up a team of like-minded assistants and very loyal customers,” Martha explains, looking back on her time in the town. “I felt Newmarket needed a business like this and since opening Martha V seven years ago it has really grown. As a team we have worked hard, offering a friendly service and really listening to our customers – and because of that we have won awards and our customers return to us time and time again.” Martha V stocks a wide range of more than 30 well-known labels and each season seeks out new and exciting designers. This autumn, she says, she is

especially excited about a number of collections, including special occasion wear from the likes of Luis Civit, Cabotine and Zeila. “Then in daywear we have some lovely outfits from Betty Barclay, Peruzzi and Taifun,” she says. “We also have some new knitwear ranges, such as Le Compte, including some beautiful wraps.” Those seeking Christmas gift ideas can also peruse Martha V’s own-label cashmere range, which comes in a spectrum of beautiful colours, as well as hats, scarves and snoods from different designers, including Powder. “Our scarves start at around £9.95 so we have items at all price ranges,” she adds. “Our gift vouchers are popular at this time of year and we can always offer advice on what might make a perfect present if anyone wants to come into the shop to talk to us.” She adds: “We are always more than happy to spend time with our customers or their family and friends to help find just the right item. After all, we all enjoy what we do here and I am certainly as passionate about it as I was when I first launched this business.” Photography courtesy of Martha V For more information call 01638 666320 or visit www.marthav.co.uk

n the heart of North Norfolk, just off the Cromer Road between Aylsham and the coast, Alby Crafts and Gardens is something of a hidden treasure. Here, tucked away in a collection of beautifully restored flint buildings, a selection of artists, craftspeople and other skilled individuals busily produce their unique pieces. Almost 40 years after the vibrant centre was opened by John and Valerie Alston it remains a hive of activity; home to thriving businesses and a hub of creativity. Paper cut artist and spokesperson for Alby Crafts, Claire Knight, who runs the Hare and Moon Gallery explains the centre includes the Upper Courtyard, where retail units and the café are located, and the Lower Courtyard, which is home to the creative businesses. “Then there are the beautiful gardens

that Valerie Alston still oversees – here there are lots of interesting shrubs, bulbs and perennials, with carpets of snowdrops and hellebores to see in late winter,” she explains. “There is so much for people to enjoy – sometimes I think we are Norfolk’s best kept secret, as even locals are often surprised at the diversity and quality of our offering.” Claire, who opened her gallery at Alby Crafts in July 2014, explores the relationship between the people, places and animals that touch her daily life in North Norfolk. Her work starts as an original pencil drawing and is then hand-cut with a scalpel, float-mounted and framed. “I also like to showcase other East Anglian arts and crafts: I have wood engravings by Andy English, lino prints by Amanda Colville, giclée prints by Kate Green, photography by Kate Barclay and sea glass jewellery by Buzz Mitchell, for example.”

Studio House is another of the galleries on site. This features the work of sculptor Mitchell House, as well as a selection of local artists, such as Michael Sanders, David Green, Samuel Thomas and Janice Gordon. It also showcases Art Deco, Art Nouveau and contemporary jewellery by Amy Christie. “Then we have another recently opened gallery called Unknown Norfolk, exhibiting the work of owner and artist Jamie Cooper, as well as others, including Alwyn and June Crawshaw,” says Claire. The lively community also includes Helen Dixon, who runs two businesses, Anglia Clay Supplies and Allbees. From her units she supplies clay and other items required for pottery to hobbyists and professionals, and equipment for beekeeping. “Helen also runs Learn Create, which is dedicated to teaching pottery, ceramics,

Another new unit will be shared by a wedding dress designer and a maker of soft furnishings.

“We also run courses here that people might like to take part in and of course there is plenty going on in the run up to Christmas,” Claire adds. “We have our Winter Barn Christmas Market on Sunday 6 December, from 10am to 4pm, with lots of exciting stands displaying art, crafts, gifts, food and other produce. “But this is the perfect place to come at other times too if you are looking for interesting shops to browse in and something that is perhaps unusual and a little bit different to buy.”

ven as George Agnew and Ady White are putting the finishing touches to Christmas at Blackthorpe they are already coming up with ideas for the following year. The pair live and breathe Christmas all year round and as a result offer an experience within the historic barn, at Rougham, which is quite unlike anything else. This year marks the 25th anniversary of welcoming British crafts to the venue and sees some exciting new makers set up their stands alongside the many more familiar faces that visitors have come to expect. This Christmas, say George and Ady, there will be other

exciting developments too, including a new chef at the helm in the café, a spectacular Santa’s grotto and even more events for children.

trees. The idea of a complementary craft fair in the beautiful oak beamed, thatched barn then emerged and Christmas at Blackthorpe was born.

“It is quite amazing to think back to how we started 25 years ago and just how much it has all developed since then,” says George. “It is important for us to keep updating what we do and to introduce new makers every year; we also make sure that there is something new here every week as Christmas approaches as many of our visitors like to come several times.”

This year the season begins on Friday 30 October when the Country Christmas Shop opens, offering an array of festive and home decorations, as well as make and bake ranges. Then at weekends from Saturday 14 November through to Sunday 13 December, a total of more than 130 of the country’s best craftspeople will display their exquisite products. Each weekend there will be some 60 stands presenting everything from delicate ceramics and glassware to stunning wooden creations, jewellery, textiles, knitwear and fabric prints.

The Rougham Estate, near Bury St Edmunds, has been known for decades for the sale of its famous Christmas

Visitors often make a day of it and like to pause in the café for a while: “Last year we enlarged our café to 120 seats and it was a huge success,” says Ady. “This year we have brought in a new caterer, Ruth Bolton, of the Little House of Cooking, who is very well-known in the food industry in East Anglia and will be coming up with menus that include lots of delicious local produce.” Christmas trees go on sale from Saturday 28 November until Tuesday 22 December, and mistletoe, handmade

“People love the workshops we offer here too and again this year we have tried to expand upon those as well.”

Christmas at Blackthorpe will be more family-focused than ever this year, with a children’s mini festival on Saturday 19 December and Sunday 20 December, which will include storytelling.

In recent years Santa’s Grotto has evolved into an even bigger highlight, becoming increasingly more magical and elaborate. “We are extremely proud of producing such an incredible grotto and this year we expect it to be twice the size,” says Ady. “It will have a woodland theme and we are really excited to have the involvement of designer Alice Bolton, who has worked on the opening of the London 2012 Paralympics among other

“There is so much going on – we are really looking forward to offering a full Christmas experience this year,” George adds. “It is exciting to think we have been doing this for 25 years and there will be a few surprises to celebrate the achievement.” Photography courtesy of Blackthorpe Barn For more information on Christmas at Blackthorpe Barn and to book tickets for Santa’s Grotto visit www.blackthorpebarn.com

he sights and scents of Christmas are in the air, and the streets of Norfolk and Suffolk are coming alive with people searching for gifts, decorations and festive fayre.

T

As the season of goodwill approaches stallholders across both counties start unpacking their produce and hanging their tinsel – and Christmas markets of all types appear in villages and towns, and even in the city itself. This area is well-known for its local produce – and where better to sample it than the Magical Christmas Market at the Great Hospital in Norwich on Saturday 14 November? A wonderful range of

products will be available in this historic setting. There will also be workshops and gluten-free cooking demonstrations. Visitors can also enjoy a free carol concert with the Norwich Occasional Choir on Monday 21 December, complete with mulled wine and mince pies. Another event with a local flavour is the Bury St Edmunds Christmas Fayre, which takes place from Thursday 26 to Sunday 29 November. There will be more than 300 stalls, including a new section in the beautiful cathedral courtyard, which is dedicated to homemade East Anglian products. Visitors can also enjoy a traditional funfair and street entertainment while

soaking up the rich, festive atmosphere with mulled wine, fine foods, carol singing and fireworks on the Sunday. The annual Mammoth Christmas Street Fair in Woodbridge also offers an array of handmade goods, including pottery, furniture, seasonal food and plants. This market, which will take place on Sunday 6 December, has more than 140 stalls for shoppers to browse. A Christmas market of around 50 stalls will complement Ipswich’s regular town centre market, providing something for everyone in the run-up to the big day. Among the special attractions from Friday 11 to Sunday 13 December will

be locally sourced foods and crafts, along with music, fairground rides and a festive bar.

Father Christmas will greet visitors on Saturday and tell festive stories in the Millennium Children’s Library.

For a truly international feel visitors can delight in the Norwich Global Village Christmas Market at the Forum in Norwich on Friday 4 and Saturday 5 December. Most of the traders are Norfolk residents and support smallscale producers from all over the world. This is a wonderful opportunity to buy some unique gifts, sample the global cuisine and support communities worldwide. A magician will entertain the crowds; there will be an African storyteller on the Friday morning and walkabout acts and a choir on Saturday.

There are also opportunities to step back in time and experience festivities from a different era. The historic village of Lavenham will host a Christmas fair from Friday 4 to Sunday 6 December. The weekend starts with the lighting of the tree in the Market Place, followed by entertainment and activities throughout the weekend, including the big wheel, music, displays and more than 80 stalls. King’s Lynn is also offering a bygone experience this year, with Medieval

Christmas celebrations from Friday 11 to Sunday 13 December. Look out for the three-day market, where visitors can fill their baskets with beautifully handcrafted wares. A variety of Medieval characters will welcome guests into the Middle Ages to sample food and drinks from the era in the tavern. ARCHITECTURAL APPRECIATION, CREATIVE INSPIRATION OR QUIET CONTEMPLATION – NORWICH’S MOST ICONIC BUILDING IS A SPACE TO TAKE PLEASURE IN FOR ALL SORTS OF REASONS

F

or more than 900 years Norwich Cathedral has been a place of joyful worship and spiritual meditation. And, of course, as the city’s most iconic building and one of the country’s greatest architectural treasures, it attracts tens of thousands of tourists every year as well. Yet until recently no-one has ever really considered the multitude of reasons why others might spend time inside the splendid building – and exactly who those visitors might be. James Shelton, marketing manager at the Cathedral, began looking more closely and was intrigued by what he found. “Norwich Cathedral has a real vibrancy to it and appeals to people of all ages,” he points out. “Of course there are those attending the services and the tourists and school children but there are so many others as well. There are those wishing to enjoy our beautiful new facilities in the Hostry and Refectory: people coming to exhibitions, to read the paper over a cup of coffee or to enjoy a live music or poetry evening – and there are others who come for more personal reasons.”

Hoping to unlock some of their stories, he began chatting to the different visitors and discovered the Cathedral was a space that offered inspiration and relaxation to people of all ages and backgrounds.

“Hal took some beautiful photographs that really show how important the Cathedral is to these different people; we then put their own words from my interviews with them on to the images – and it all just came together.”

“There is Mide, who is a student at UEA and a spoken word artist, for example, who comes to soak up the atmosphere and work on her poetry, and Ben, a trainee solicitor, who stays for 20 minutes in his lunch hour because it is still and quiet,” he says. “There is Kate, a nurse in her 30s, who comes because she finds the music so inspiring, and Tim, the chief executive of a large organisation, who tries to set aside half a day every month to sit here and think about the big issues he faces at work.”

Among them was a picture of Jan, one of many volunteers who helps out at the Cathedral, and who says she comes to “love, laugh a lot, give smiles and wipe tables.”

The Cathedral, James discovered, was something different to everyone; people of all ages valued it for the private space it gave them as individuals as well as its vitality. The idea was then born to try to portray some of the visitors within their favourite corners of the magnificent building, so James contacted renowned portrait photographer Hal Shinnie, who lives in North Norfolk, and a series of images emerged.

“Jan took us to an area of the Cathedral I wasn’t even aware of before and we all waited for about half an hour for the sun to come round. Suddenly it appeared and for just 10 seconds she was lit up. It was a moment of absolute perfection and sums up what we wanted to achieve with this project. “The Cathedral is important to so many different people in different ways – and I hope that when others see the pictures and hear the stories their perceptions might change. I hope they themselves may visit to find out how the Cathedral become a place for them as well.” Photography by Hal Shinnie (www.halshinnie.com) For more information on Norwich Cathedral visit www.cathedral.org.uk

IDIVE (IPSWICH DIVE CLUB) CHAIRMAN JOHN COOK DISCUSSES PLUNGING INTO SCUBA DIVING IN SUFFOLK AND NORFOLK Tell us a little bit about yourself? I live in Ipswich, was born in Ipswich, and my ancestors have lived in Ipswich at least as far back as my great-grandfather! I used to be a consultant engineer but I’m retired now. My wife Frances is also a diver and is membership secretary of the club. What made you take up the sport? We both took it up together in 1990 after taking adult improver swimming lessons and deciding we wanted to take the interest in a more adventurous direction. What has kept you doing it since then? The wide variety of experiences that diving leads you to: we’ve been diving all over the world and many of those locations have been wonderful and offered great but very different diving, from warm clear waters in the tropics, with bright fish and corals, to the cold but intriguing life of Canadian shores, with massive anemones, starfish and octopuses. What qualifications do you hold? Our club is affiliated to the British Sub Aqua Club (BSAC). I’m a BSAC advanced diver and Frances is a BSAC dive leader. I’m also a BSAC open water instructor, which enables me to train newcomers to the sport right through pool and open water training up to my own diving qualification level.

Tell us about the Ipswich Dive Club? Our members come from very diverse backgrounds. Our club offers training from newcomer level. We have the use of Fore St Pool in Ipswich on Thursday evenings (7.30pm to 9pm). Our club also has three inflatable boats that can be towed and used around the coast and its own sets of scuba equipment. We also organise diving trips round the UK and the world – and most importantly we have our members who give their time for no financial reward. Do you offer taster sessions? Yes. We ask for £10 to cover the costs, but offer to count this as part of your initial membership fee if you decide to join the club. We do “try-dives” in the pool on Thursday evenings but you do need to let us know you are coming beforehand via our website www.idive.org.uk. Is autumn or winter a good time to learn? Actually, yes it is. Although scuba diving activity in UK open waters tends to be very much reduced in the winter, we can do all the theory aspects and the pool training stages to becoming an ocean diver in the off months. Are there any good open water dive sites in Norfolk or Suffolk? Norfolk is more attractive than Suffolk in this respect because it has a wider “visibility window” but we do try to dive from

Felixstowe, Southwold and even Lowestoft when we can. Sea Palling and Weybourne are favoured Norfolk launch sites. There are many wrecks off the coasts of Suffolk and Norfolk that make excellent dive sites. Can anyone of any age scuba dive and does it require a certain fitness level? There are no specific upper age limits, just a required degree of health, particularly with heart and lungs. As a club we are reluctant to train anyone under 14, and only train those below the age of 16 if their parents or guardians are members of the club or join to learn with them. What are the safety issues? Scuba diving is really a very safe sport. Having said this, a scuba diver is in a rather unforgiving environment: if something goes wrong then the consequences can be very severe. The best defence a diver has against this is training to avoid problems in the first place and learning how to deal with them quickly if they arise. Do you have any advice for anyone thinking of giving it a go? Just come and try it. You’ll never know if it’s for you until you do. UNIQUELY AWAY AUTUMN 2015

Saturday 23 January to Sunday 24 January

Miss Nightingale: The Musical Norwich Playhouse

Joe Armatage (BoneshakerPhotography.com)

Sex, scandal and showbiz – all 1940s’ style. Miss Nightingale, a musical by Matthew Bugg, brings the on-stage glamour and off-stage affairs of war-torn London thrillingly to life. In times of war people will do anything to survive. The landed gentry rub shoulders with black-market spivs, songwriters take to the streets and working class girls want to change the world. Bootleg booze, blackmail and bombshells are a dangerous combination. And some secrets are more explosive than the Blitz... Audiences across Britain have adored this feel-good tale of love, loss and hope – performed by a multi-talented cast who not only act, dance and sing but also play all the instruments live on stage. This is the fourth and final UK tour of the smash-hit show, which has its audiences cheering for more. For more information or to book call 01603 598598 or visit www.norwichplayhouse.co.uk

It’s a family affair at the Norwich Arts Centre when siblings Kitty, Daisy and Lewis Durham step into the spotlight at 8pm. All three are songwriters and musicians whose background is rooted in the tradition where songs are handed down and sung at family gatherings, playing any instrument they lay their hands on. Their songs are an eclectic mix of pop, rhythm and blues, psychedelic rock, soul, country, jazz and

UNIQUELY AWAY AUTUMN 2015

In the know Jemma Mickleburgh (www.jmaphotography.co.uk)

Francesca Mann-Andrews, Singer Are you from Norfolk? I was born and grew up in Norwich and have lived here for much of my life. My husband Cliff and I, and our daughter, did spend four years living in Tuscany, where I studied for a year at the Siena Jazz Institute. Coming back to Norwich again reconnected us with some wonderfully supportive musicians – essential for developing our recent musical project Song Noir. What do you enjoy about living here? Each time I return, Norwich is more vibrant. I like the juxtaposition of historical architecture and new lively cafés and shops. It’s quirky yet there’s an ease to it as well – I like being able to walk or cycle into the pedestrianised city centre. I love UEA, Cinema City and the art college – varied places that bring positive energy. The nearby North Norfolk coast allows dream space and has a strong sense of the elements.

Where are your favourite places in Suffolk and Norfolk to spend time in the autumn and winter? West Runton woods, with its sheltered walks and blackberry-picking, and the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads or the muddy creeks at Stiffkey, where you can canoe and enjoy moments of stillness and discovery. The Holkham to Wells walk is an exhilarating favourite all year round – and wonderful in the winter when followed by comforting fireside seats at the Victoria Inn. We also love spending time at UEA when it snows – and going sledging! Tell us about Song Noir? Song Noir began five years ago and is a musical duo that can be more! We use vocals, saxophone, flute, keyboards and samples but can add more live musicians to the mix when it’s right for the gig. We play with an MPC (music production centre). This instrument, also used by DJs and hip hop and RnB artists, can give some satisfying, deep and contemporary sounds to improvise with. How would you describe your music? The music shifts from iconic jazz ballads and swing to more contemporary sounds such as soul, reggae and RnB. We provide music for events such as parties, art exhibition private views and intimate café bars. We also collaborate on projects with rappers, poets, visual artists, dancers and those involved in theatre and film as we do each month at our community project the First Wednesday Club. How long have you been performing together and individually? We have spent decades playing live music – firstly

in the 1980s, with the Mangoes, a local ska band where Cliff and I met. Then we joined in the jazz and blues jam sessions at Boswell’s, in Tombland, Norwich, in the 1990s. This was followed by involvement in the Boswell’s Big Band, and the Saturday live dance nights there. Then Cliff and I ran the Jazz and Blues Project at Norwich Arts Centre from 2000 to 2007. This offered exciting jam nights and workshops, with guests like Pee Wee Ellis from the James Brown Band. Do you have any performances coming up? Yes, the Blofield Courthouse jazz night, on Friday 27 November at 7.30pm, and our First Wednesday Club, held from 8pm on the first Wednesday of the month at Platform 12, St Benedict’s Street in Norwich. All welcome! What do you think about the music scene in general in Norfolk and Suffolk? Alive and creative! We meet and collaborate with talented artists who are both established and emerging, and who play, among other types of music, folk, Latin, African jazz and hip hop. What would your perfect night out in Norwich be? The relaxed atmosphere of the Workshop for an aperitif followed by a film at the arty Cinema City – and perhaps a satisfying glass of red wine at the Dining Rooms bar – or a 3D sensory experience at the Odeon, on Riverside.
