On the morning of UN day all the Elementary School students will create a Collaborative Art project to demonstrate the concepts behind the theme of Rapprochement of Cultures. Through art they will seek to understand “cultural diversity by acknowledging the importance of the constant transfers and exchanges between cultures and the ties forged between them since the dawn of humanity.” http:// www.unesco.org/culture/pdf/2010/2010_leaflet_en Definition: rapprochement Synonyms: rapprochement Reconciliation Reunion Understanding Coming together Settlement Compromise Agreement Conciliation
The collaboratively produced art installation will be a giant weaving of fabrics, textures, ribbons and wishes where students can physically create harmony and unity through interconnections of colour, texture, pattern and shape. Each child in
the Elementary School will also write their wishes and hopes for intercultural understanding and intertwine these into the weaving. How can you help? If you have any ribbon,
threads, wool, strips of texture that you want to donate to the art installation please bring it to the donation box in the ES office. Come along and add
your wishes for world harmony to our art installation on UN day.

The spectacular Parade of Nations will as usual launch the ceremony when all the flags of the countries represented in the school – 67 this year! – will be carried on a parade through our audience and above their heads on the mezzanine balcony. Our Flag Bearers will be rehearsing during the week: Tuesday: 13.10 - 14:00 Wednesday: 14:45-16:30 (Buses will be available for students who USUALLY TAKE THE BUS) Thursday: 09:45-11.05 For a full list of the flag bearers that will be part of the Parade of Nations please CLICK HERE.
Invitations have already been sent to ALL parents and guardians but please don’t worry if you did not receive your parent invitation (as with all email distribution systems, we do encounter delivery failures). As parents and guardians you are NOT required to present your invitation for entry. The Assembly will start promptly at 10:30 am in the Sports Centre and we ask you to be in your seats by 10.20am. The central blocks of seating and our new tiered bleachers will be designated for parent seating. It is a first-come first served seating plan with the exception of the named community lunch volunteers who will have reserved seating at the front.
You and your children are welcomed and encouraged to wear something representing your “national” dress or clothes from a place where you have lived. With such a multicultural melting pot of nationalities represented, it is sometime difficult to identify with only one nationality, so we encourage the children to create or put together a costume that represents their own sense of identity. In the end, wear something you will feel comfortable wearing. Business dress is often preferred by parents and no one should feel any pressure to ‘dress up’.

Following the ceremony ALL parents/guardians are invited to join their children and the rest of the community for our wonderful ‘Potluck’ Lunch from 12:00 in the classroom areas (ES and MS) or Canteen for High School families. Every family should be planning to contribute food for the Community Lunch to ensure that we have enough to feed all the children and guests. You will have received emails from your SCO Class or Grade Level Parents and please do help with setting up the lunch too if you can. The culminating event for UN Day is the international community lunch which is enjoyed by students, staff and parents. It is truly international and fun! Our shared lunch is provided by parents and is again an opportunity for you to showcase your nationality. Many parents bring in their favorite national dish or something that is popular in their home country. All parents, family members, faculty and staff are welcome and encouraged to attend the luncheon which will start at 12:00 noon. UNIS Hanoi will provide: plates, napkins, cups, and forks. Children will have their water bottles and parents are welcome to bring their own non-alcoholic drinks. Drinking cups and water will be available for everyone.
Prepare one plate of food to serve 10 people (servings)
for each of your child’s classroom. Prepare food that does not require refrigeration or need
to be heated.
Please bring your dish to the following rooms between 08:00 - 09:30.
Prepare food that can be easily served and can be eaten
with fingers or forks — no soupy or runny dishes. Do not bring any food that contains nuts of any
kind; no peanuts, cashews, walnuts, almonds, etc or peanut oil or peanut products because of severe allergies. Label the food with name and country of origin;
decorate the plate/food with flags or ribbons. List the ingredients of your food for dietary restrictions and allergies (please see the sample below). If you bring food on a serving plate, please collect it after
the lunch is finished so it is not misplaced. It is recommended to clearly mark it with your child’s name and homeroom. Many people made a disposable serving container using a small cardboard container lined with foil which is then decorated to serve their food. If your dish requires a serving spoon or fork, please
provide. More appetizers and main courses are required than
desserts.

Yêu cầu không mang thức ăn có thành phần từ bất kỳ loại hạt nào họ nhà lạc, ví dụ như: lạc, hạt điều, óc chó, hạnh nhân, hoặc dầu lạc, các sản phầm làm từ lạc do khả năng gây dị ứng nghiêm trọng. Dán nhãn cho món ăn bằng tên món ăn, tên nước; trang trí khay đựng/thức ăn bằng cờ hoặc ruy-băng. Applications for the UNIS Hanoi Scholarship programme open this week on Tuesday October 1. And this year, we are expanding the programme both in number of students that we can enroll and the age range that will be eligible. The UNIS Hanoi Scholarship Programme gives the opportunity for Vietnamese students from a low socioeconomic background, who are excelling at their local Hanoi district school to enter UNIS Hanoi until graduation.
FOUR full Scholarships will be available for entry to UNIS Hanoi in the 2014-15 academic year. Students may apply to the UNIS Hanoi Scholarship Programme for entry to Grade 8, Grade 9 or Grade 10. In all cases, the 100% Scholarship will be valid until graduation from UNIS Hanoi. The programme was launched in 2011-12 and we have welcomed two scholarship students to UNIS Hanoi in the last two academic years.
Please help eligible students find out about this programme by spreading the word amongst your friends, colleagues and associates. UNIS Hanoi is a well-connected community and we ask you to mobilize! In addition to the fees waiver, significant support will be available for the Scholarship Students to access English support, to be able to participate fully in the activities programme in MSHS and for transport to and from school.
Deadline for applications is Tuesday 31 December. Full eligibility criteria, the timeline for the selection process and application documents are available on UNIS Hanoi website in both ENGLISH and VIETNAMESE. This Saturday, UNIS Hanoi will be hosting the 3rd Annual Hanoi Classic High School Volleyball Tournament in our Sports Center. The event will see the girls playing throughout the morning (9am-1pm) and the boys taking to the court in the afternoon (2-6pm). In addition to the host MRISA and APAC teams from UNIS Hanoi, also participating in the tournament is Hanoi International School and two UNIS Hanoi staff teams. Please refer to the schedule below to see the match times.
Come on out to support the UNIS Hanoi Volleyball programmes as the teams prepare for their upcoming APAC and MRISA tournaments. APAC Volleyball will be at UNIS on October 24-26. These organizations offer UNIS Hanoi students the rich experience of travelling to other schools to participate in cultural and athletic events. When our students travel to MRISA and APAC events, they enjoy the hospitality of the host school by staying with families like yours throughout the event. The APAC and MRISA organizations value the host family experience as it allows students to learn about another international student’s life and the country/city they currently call home. In exchange for their generosity, we as a community and as members of MRISA and APAC have the obligation to open our school and homes to visiting guests who come to events at UNIS. This autumn, UNIS Hanoi is proud to host the APAC High School Girls & Boys Volleyball Tournament from October 23-27. We are expecting to host 60 girls and 60 boys for the APAC tournament. We would like to give all of our visiting student athletes a warm welcome and provide for them the same hospitality that UNIS Hanoi students receive from other hosting schools. Maybe your child is currently participating in an autumn sport or performing art activity, and may very well be involved in further activities as the school year progresses. As such, we are asking you to be a Host Family for this event. To those who have hosted in the past, I’d like to say a big “THANK YOU!!”, and I hope we can count on your assistance again. Thank you to all those who attended our first parent tech session of the year! Here's a recap of last week's session (you can view our presentation here):
We kicked off our session by sharing our thoughts on how we define a balanced life in this day and age. We have differing opinions surrounding the role of technology in our children's lives - what one considers to be an 'unhealthy' amount of technology use may be different from another. Some adults struggle with the fact that we did not grow up with technology as our children have. This presents a challenge as parents figure out the right balance between providing the best 'digital discipline' to kids and giving them the freedom to learn about and explore the digital world.
We continued to examine more of the challenges parents grapple with by investigating several 'family' scenarios dealing with the following issues: communication, privacy, cyber bullying, gaming, parent surveillance and online vs. face-to-face interaction. What followed each scenario were thought-provoking discussions that addressed the different perspectives with which we viewed the situations. We also discussed the issues which may not have been apparent at first glance as well as possible responses to each scenario. Below is a summary of the guiding principles and effective strategies that parents can apply in similar situations:
The cognitive development of adolescents limits
their ability to self-control. Studies have shown that the part of your child's brain that governs judgment is not fully developed until they are in their 20's. This means that your child will need rules and structure to help them regulate their tech use. Steer away from banning or blocking the use of technologies as a consequence. This may work temporarily, but it can also encourage rebellious behavior. Give your child the opportunity to practice managing their online identity in a safe environment. Keep the communication channels open. Provide opportunities to engage in dialog with your child.
Multitasking is great for rote tasks, but may not be the
best option for activities that require you to focus on the job at hand (ex. finishing a project) Establish a common space where your child can access the computer. If the situation has escalated to a point where the child's school work is getting affected, do not hesitate to get the school involved.

We would like to give a SHOUT OUT to all the SPARKLY DANCE QUEENS and KINGS on the DANCE FLOOR at the School Community Organization’s (SCO) Sparkly Social last Friday! The ambiance at The Press Club was GREAT, food and drinks were FABULOUS and the entertainment was OUT OF THIS WORLD! Thank you to Dr Chip Barder for sharing his talents with us and starting off the night to the grooves of a Joe Cocker classic Unchain my Heart and the Hot Guys Band (UNIS’ very own UMA musicians) for jamming all night long! The stunning Filipina singer from the Press Club Ms. Anna Walter, with a voice to be reckoned with. And DJ Jody O’Dea laying down the beats from Operations!
We would also like to say a HUGE THANK YOU to the SCO Executives for arranging this fun-filled night! Without your time and commitment none of this would have been possible. In particular, we would like to recognize Ms. Pippa Wood for ALL the time and effort she devoted to everything from creating the tickets to decorating the venue, and everything in between! If so, now is the time to note your ideas down : WHAT it is, HOW you will do it, WHO will it benefit, how HOW MUCH your idea will cost to make happen? Any one from the UNIS Hanoi community can apply for the funds for their project idea/item. Once again the School Community Organisation has allocated funds collected from Spring Fair to be used for project ideas within our community. The application forms and information is currently being updated and will be available on the Portal soon. Science Teacher (Integrated MYP Science, Grades 6 and 8). The position is 40% employment with salary and benefits prorated – Very possible to live comfortably on the salary provided. The Science Teacher will report to the Middle School/High School Principal.
Teach one one class of grade 6 and one class of grade 8 Provide a differentiated program of instruction that
incorporates high expectations for all learners Deliver the curriculum within the MYP framework and philosophy of the school Work collaboratively with colleagues both within the Science Department and the greater school community Assess and report student progress Share in the overall responsibility for the academic progress, personal development, health and safety, discipline and well-being of students Provide timely communication to parents Attend bi weekly meetings with the Grade Level teachers to discuss student concerns, plan events, discuss test results etc. Participate enthusiastically in morning meetings, house events, and assemblies Become an active member within the UNIS community : advisory, sports, after-school activities, students clubs, and community service activities Contribute to the UNIS school improvement plan by serving on committees and other shared decisionmaking groups Pursue professional development and model life-long learning Participate in team planning and curriculum development Demonstrate a commitment and willingness work with students during community service activities
