As we go through our third year in APAC, we have the wonderful opportunity of hosting our first indoor sports event next week – Boys and Girls HS Volleyball. It is described in much more detail later in the Tin Tuc (see p.3-4), but we have three days of competition planned and will host five other APAC schools in a round-robin followed by team relegation format. We are very proud of how hard our athletes have worked to get themselves tournament ready and hope you will be able to find the time to stop by, enjoy watching some outstanding volleyball, and support our UNIS Phoenix teams. Seeing it in action will also give you a better understanding of the level of competition we face in this new conference of schools that we joined only recently. It is not too early to remind you of some upcoming dates. One of them is that our next “Breakfast with the HoS” which is scheduled for Friday, 08 November with

Dear MSHS Families, Please set aside November 4 or 5 for Student/Parent/Teacher Three-Way Conferences. Complete instructions have been provided to make the signup process as user friendly at possible. If you have any difficulties signing up for Conferences please contact Ed Gilbreath (Director of Technology) or me at your earliest convenience. Conference signups via ISIS Family will begin at 09:00 on Monday, October 21 and close at noon on Friday, November 1. refreshments starting at 08:00 in the Community Room. The topic for discussion is being finalized but we hope you will be able to join us for our 2nd meeting of the year. And the 1st of two Board-Community meetings is scheduled for Tuesday, 12 November. Please mark your calendar and plan to attend this meeting where among other things we will discuss the budget for the 2014-2015 school year. Enjoy the cooler weather this weekend. Respectfully, Dr. Barder, hos@unishanoi.org

We wish all the best to who left UNIS Hanoi this week

The Report is being provided before Conferences so that parents can gain information and develop talking points with classroom teachers. Please note, because teachers are meeting with parents in person there will be no narrative comments on the Progress Report. As an MYP school reporting at UNIS Hanoi in Grades 6 – 10 is based on criteria. Students receive feedback based on achievement toward specific criteria. The Mid Semester Progress Report will contain levels for each criteria and a combined overall achievement level for each course. In some courses you will notice that a criteria level is marked as “N/A” (Not Assessed). This is simply a timing issue. Please note that we are still in the early stages of the school year and in some classes not all criteria have been assessed, thus the N/A. As we go further into the year all criteria will be assessed and reported. Should you have any questions about grading please speak with subject area teachers. If you require further clarification please contact Sibylle Harth (MYP Coordinator), Emma Collins (DP Coordinator) or me. Warm regards and happy conferencing, Pete Kennedy, mshsprincipal@unishanoi.org

On October 24-26, UNIS Hanoi will be hosting the 2013 APAC Volleyball Championships. The host UNIS Phoenix teams will participate with the following APAC schools: Canadian Academy (Japan) Hong Kong International School (China) International School of Beijing (China) Shanghai American School – Puxi Campus (China) Taejon Christian International School (Korea) There should be some great volleyball action over the three days of the tournament. The UNIS Community is invited to come out and support this important school event and cheer on the home team. See next page for detailed schedule. Thank you for supporting UNIS Hanoi Activities!! More information will be coming home with the ECC students soon!

Dear UNIS Community, On the 24 September the Advisory Taskforce members reconvened it efforts to find ways to develop and enhance health, nutrition and wellness at UNIS Hanoi. 13 conscientious members, consisting of students, parents, teachers and administrators met for the first time this academic year and a number of ‘Goals’ were identified. In an attempt to be more transparent to the UNIS community notes from these meetings will be published (and can be found here) along with an informative article related to our cause. This month’s publication ‘Food and Learning – are they linked?’ was written by our school nurse Kelly Havlin which illustrates how important and beneficial good nutrition is to learning. Adrian Hubbard, D-12 Physical Education and Health Coordinator ahubbard@unishanoi.org

The question of a link between food and learning is a valid one and one that benefits discussion. Due to the current research, we are becoming increasingly aware of the role that nutrition plays on the body and minds ability to grow and the performance of our potential learning capacity. In many countries, the diet of children has risen to the top of the political agenda, not only for the potential health repercussions later in life, but also for its immediate effect on the physical and mental health of children and their consequent school experience. According to the experts, what a child eats has a direct effect on energy levels, physical stamina, mood, mental clarity and emotional and mental wellbeing. Poor nutrition can lead to a decrease in the body’s immunity, increasing susceptibility to illness and causing children to have more absent days from school. Five food groups have been identified as keys to keeping the brain functioning and developing. 1. Vegetables of different colors, legumes and beans 2. Fruits 3. Grain foods, mostly wholegrain and or high fiber varieties such as breads, cereals, rice and pasta, noodles polenta, couscous, oats and quinoa and barley. 4. Lean meats and poultry, fish eggs, tofu, nuts* 5. Milk, reduced fat (Children <2 should have full cream milk), yogurt, cheese and their alternatives.

Studies suggest that a lack of proteins (found in grains, meats, cheese) to name a few, leads to poor performance, lethargy and withdrawal, all of which effect social development. A lack of carbohydrates found in grains, fruits and vegetables may cause a fluctuation in glucose (which is where the brain gets its energy) levels in the blood this effecting cognitive performance. A lack of fatty acids (Omega 3) obtained through some fish, tofu, soybeans may lead to poor memory, mood changes and low IQ. Vitamins A, C and E (found in milk, fruit vegetables and nuts*, cereals), play a role in message transmission and the thinking process. Vitamin B is aid to have a causal relationship with behavioral problems. A combination of diet and sleep has the potential to alter brain function. When it comes to overall brain health, exercise improves circulation which increases oxygen flow to the brain.

A useful equation is Good Nutrition + Exercise = Optimal learning Although not guaranteed to give your child straight A’s, there are solutions to help keep the memory sharp, keep them awake and alert and exercise safely. By encouraging your child to snack wisely, offering a winning combination of the five food groups, topping this up with plenty of water and encouraging participation in regular exercise, you will have your child staying in focus and raring to go. Engaging both children and parents in healthy eating behaviors and a concerted effort between schools and family can achieve an improvement in the nutritional intake of children thus linking food and learning. *Remember UNIS Hanoi is a nut free zone – save your nuts for home. Kelly Havlin, School Nurse khavlin@unishanoi.org

For our first unit in Humanities Nine, students were tasked with creating a unique thematic digital map that would give viewers new insight into the world. Students created their own investigative question based on a compelling world issue or a personal interest. Depending on their topic choice; they consulted databases, created ranking systems, and / or conducted surveys to gain data. Students presented their process and product on a blog post that embedded their digital map and a Google feedback form.

Dear Families, We are very pleased to announce that for session 2 UNIS Music Academy registration you will be able to use the new UMA student sign up section under the ISIS Family module that Ms. Cham and Ms. Sayeh have been very busy developing. This is similar to the way you sign up for ASAs. This means that you will be able to immediately see teacher availability and have instant confirmation of your allotted time slot and independently make any changes to your time, teacher or instrument if other more suitable times are available. We will also be able to use this database to send out invoices more promptly. PLEASE NOTE: Families who already indicated they wanted to have lessons for the whole year, for which they have been invoiced, will have their CURRENT teacher, instrument and time slot entered by Ms. Cham and secured prior to the session 2 registration opening. For these existing students – if you want to alter your time slot once you see the availability, we HOPE that you will be able to do so independently from 7:00 on October 24th via ISIS Family. However, this is still being perfected so if you have paid for the whole year but want to have a different time, teacher or instrument please email Ms. Cham so we are aware prior to Oct 24th.

October 23 at 7:00 UMA module is available for viewing. Here you will be able to see which instruments, teachers, days and times are available to enable you to make the best decision for your child.

THANK YOU to contributing parents from classes K1RT, K2CO, 1JH, 3SE, 3AL, 3NO and 3TS for all the time and love you put into creating such artistic homemade delights for ALL ES children to enjoy! Also, we need to express our sincere gratitude to ALL the cheerful volunteers who have come to help sell snacks outside despite the rain! And a SPECIAL THANKS to the extremely organized efforts of the Snack Sale Coordinators Akiko Nakano, Ikuko Mizuno and Bo young Hwang, for all the thought and behind the scenes work you did to ensure the snack sale ran smoothly! All of the money from the ES Snack Sale goes into the overall SCO account. This money, combined with other money, is then devolved back to the community through a Project Funding Programme (see p.14), and other SCO events, such as Vietnamese Teachers Day and/or SCO Community Socials. The ES Snack Sale is considered a fun opportunity for the small children to exercise choice and learn how to handle money. It is a tradition at UNIS Hanoi that has developed over a long time and the children love it! ES Snack Sale Committee, SCO Executives and Nathalie Grun, Community Liaison Officer

On October 6, just as the UNIS Hanoi holiday was starting some UNIS staff and their families participated in the Hanoi Moi run around Hoan Kiem Lake. This charity run is organized by the Hanoi Moi News paper, and this year was quite special as it was the 40th anniversary of when the race began. Kudos goes out to Mr. Grant Chamberlain our ES music teacher who not only plays a mean saxophone but won 3rd prize in this competition of running 2 times around the lake! Ms Deborah Vermeire who is often seen subbing around the ECC and ES narrowly missed coming in 1st place and proudly took home a silver medal in the woman's competition of one lap around the lake!. They really did us proud!

Great effort by everyone else who participated! SPECIAL THANKS to Mr. Phi for helping organize this for everyone.
