Notes from the Head of School Dear Parents, It has been exciting to have our three former heads arrive in Hanoi for the 25th birthday celebrations this weekend. We are already enjoying their stories and listening to them share their memories and look forward to more of that tonight. We have about 60 community members who indicated their attendance which is wonderful. And of course the Gala tomorrow evening promises to be a great event. Happy Birthday, UNIS Hanoi. And may the next 25 be even more memorable. Respectfully, Dr. Barder, Head of School

Welcome to UNIS Hanoi ! Thepthida (1BB) & Vanny Kittikhoun (9JG)

Photo Retake Day Dear Parents, The PHOTO RETAKE DAY is happening on Wednesday, April 17. The Photo Retake is for students who missed the first photo session in September. A professional photographer will be on campus taking individual portrait of each student. This portrait will be used for the UNIS Hanoi Yearbook and other school materials. As a parent, you will have the opportunity to purchase a package of different sized photographs of your child’s sitting. In a few weeks you will be provided a sample of the portraits and information regarding purchasing. If you have any questions, please contact advancement@unishanoi.org. Advancement Team

Notes from the Elementary Principal Dear parents, SAKURA CHERRY TREE DELEGATION ATTENDS ES ASSEMBLY We were honoured and delighted to receive a special Japanese delegation at our assembly for Grades 1 to 5 this week. Our guests were one of several delegations visiting Vietnam at the current time as part of the 40th Anniversary of Japan-Vietnam Amity celebrations. They specifically have been visiting organisations such as UNIS Hanoi to offer their thanks for all the support that was shown after the tsunami in Japan in March 2011. UNIS Hanoi students were amongst many who wrote letters of support at that time. The delegation comprised the following members: Mr Yoshihiro HANASHIRO, Okinawa Churashima Foundation, Mr Kei OYAKAWA Deputy Mayor of Nago City, Okinawa, Mr Koichiro NAKAZATO Chief of Public Relations, Nago City, Okinawa, Mr Yoichi HASEGAWA Space Seeds Project, Ms Riho TACHIBANA Canna Project, Mr Shigeo NAKAJIMA General Secretary of International Culture Association "WA", Mr Atsuki TOMOYOSE Representative from the Japanese Embassy. Mr Hanashiro explained that they were donating 10 Sakura trees to the school for planting on campus. He had samples on stage to show the children and Mr Hasegawa then gave a presentation about the sakura tree and its importance and showed examples of some very old trees in full bloom in Japan. The children were fascinated by his explanation about the Space Seeds project whereby Sakura tree seeds were sent into space to an International Space Station as part of the Asian Seed Project in 2010. Ms Tachibana then talked to the children about the symbolic importance of the Canna flower which was the flower that miraculously bloomed one month after the atomic bomb was dropped on the city of Hiroshima, in an area which it was would not be able to produce life for years. Ms Tachibana, beautifully attired in a kimono (with the design of a canna flower in full bloom on her obi), explained that her dream and indeed life’s work is to spread the message of peace by offering Canna bulbs to be planted around the world. She showed a short film clip of children in Japan working on the project and singing a Japanese song about the Canna flower. We now have some bulbs to plant on campus which we will do in the coming days. These trees and flowers will serve to reinforce the message of worldwide peace and friendship and be a continuing reminder of the special relationship between Vietnam and Japan. The assembly concluded with our students offering their thanks for the delegation’s presentations and donations by singing “This Pretty Planet” which complemented the theme of ‘One World’ and peace very well. Our sincere thanks to Chie Kimura, one of our Japanese parents, for translating for us throughout the assembly. Warm Regards, Carole Denny, Elementary Principal

Notes from the Director of Learning Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Test April 23-25 for Students in Grades 6-8 In September UNIS Hanoi students from Grades 3-8 took part in the MAP test. The MAP test is an online standardized test which is completed individually by each student on a computer. These computerized tests in Reading, Language Usage, and Math are called Measures of Academic Progress™ (MAP). At UNIS Hanoi standardised testing is one method of gathering information to promote and inform student learning. A standardised test should allow students, teachers and parents to identify a student's strengths and areas of need in the different subject areas that are tested. At the school-wide level the standardised test can help to identify areas of the curriculum that may need adapting. It will also help the school to determine how UNIS Hanoi students are performing in comparison to other students around the world and evaluate the effectiveness of our programme. The MAP test at UNIS Hanoi is done twice a year so that we can check for growth in student’s development of knowledge and understanding in the areas tested. This semester students in grades 6-8 will complete the spring MAP test during the days of April 23-25, 2013. The results of the assessment will be used by classroom teachers to better understand individual student achievement and future steps for learning. Results will be sent home to parents using a parent report that will be uploaded onto ISIS. MAP tests are unique in that as students complete the test it adapts to be appropriate for their level of learning. As a result, each student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude toward testing. Please be aware that there is no additional preparation that students can do to prepare for these tests. It is helpful for students to have a good night’s sleep and a solid breakfast prior to testing. If your child is anxious you can help to alleviate their worries by talking, listening and reassuring. Encourage your child to simply do their best as he or she would do with any school assignment, test or project. Please contact the homeroom teacher if you have a concern regarding your child’s reaction to the test. If you would like more information about the MAP test in general please contact Meagan EnticknapSmith, the Director of Learning at dol@unishanoi.org MAP Test Schedule Grades 6-8 Reading

Blood pressure – take control Key Messages: The problem High blood pressure (also known as raised blood pressure or hypertension) can lead to heart attack, stroke and other serious health problems. It affects more than one in three adults and leads to more than nine million deaths worldwide every year. High blood pressure can also cause kidney failure, blindness, rupture of blood vessels and brain impairment. Many people do not know that they have high blood pressure because it does not always cause symptoms. Even though it is easily diagnosed and treated, many people do not have access to basic health services, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.

The solution High blood pressure is both preventable and treatable. Controlling high blood pressure, together with other risk factors, is the main way to prevent heart attack and stroke. The risk of developing high blood pressure can be minimized by: cutting down on salt; eating a balanced diet; avoiding harmful use of alcohol; getting regular exercise; and avoiding tobacco use. For many people, lifestyle changes are sufficient to control blood pressure. For others, medication is required. Inexpensive medication exists, which is effective when taken as prescribed. It is essential that detection and control of high blood pressure (measurement, health advice and treatment), are coupled with simultaneous reduction of other risk factors that cause heart attacks and strokes, such as diabetes and tobacco use. They should be core elements of primary health care in all countries, and integral to efforts to reduce the growing burden of noncommunicable diseases. Civil society has an important role to play in helping to address high blood pressure. Industry can contribute to the solution, for example, by reducing salt in processed food and making essential diagnostics and medicines more affordable. As part of the Nurses contribution to Control your blood pressure – World Health Day – if you want a blood pressure check – drop by. UNIS Hanoi Nurse Team

Notes from the Director of Technology Phishing Expedition The email below is an example of serveral that I have received recently which can be classed as Phishing. We are experiencing a resurgence in this type of email. In my previous school Phishing seemed to peak during the 2007-08 school year when email of this type accounted for 31% of our incoming email traffic. Phishing as defined by Wikipedia: Phishing is the act of attempting to acquire information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details (and sometimes, indirectly, money) by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. Communications purporting to be from popular social web sites, auction sites, online payment processors or IT administrators are commonly used to lure the unsuspecting public. While Phishing expeditions appear to be legitimate tell tale signs always exist. In this case the From: address is worth exploring. From: PayPal [mailto:noreplay@netlogin.net] Sent: Wednesday, April 10, 2013 2:58 PM Subject: Attention! Your PayPal account has been limited!

Note that rather than the standard noreply@ it is noreplay@. Furthermore the domain name is netlogin.net which is clearly not a paypal domain. Phishing groups have improved the quality of the email they are sending. Earlier phishing attempts were filled with spelling and grammar errors. Apparently they are employing more skilled English speakers and their quality control efforts have had the desired effect. If you mouse over update in the email the link appears: http://jenny-fashion.com/aa/pp.html. Clearly it is not a PayPal site. We can assume that clicking on the link will open you and your computer to malware, possible fraud and potential identity theft. Always beware of links embedded in any email message. From the Activities Office Success At MRISA Senior Soccer Congratulations UNIS Hanoi !!! Last weekend UNIS Hanoi hosted the MRISA Senior Soccer Tournament on our campus. 160 boys and girls representing the eight MRISA schools competed over two long days in an attempt to become the MRISA champions for 2013. Cheered on by a very supportive home crowd, the two UNIS Hanoi teams both battled their way into the Championship Match. The UNIS Hanoi girls met the International School of Phnom Penh in the final and came out on top with a narrow 2 -1 victory. The home team won all five of their matches on their way to claiming the MRISA crown. Inspired by the success of the girls in their final, the UNIS Hanoi boys came out determined to show that they also had what it took to bring home the championship. The International School of Ho Chi Minh City was their opponent. ISHCMC came into the final without conceding a single goal in their previous four matches. Despite repeated attempts to score the opening goal, UNIS Hanoi was frustrated by the team from southern Vietnam. At the end of regulation time, the game still stood goalless. That meant 10 minutes of sudden death “Golden Goal” extra-time. With time running out on the clock and darkness starting to become a factor, the home team headed the winning goal from a throw-in to earn the MRISA title in an exciting 1-0 victory! It meant double success for UNIS Hanoi on their home turf! Well done Phoenix!! With the two UNIS Hanoi Middle School soccer teams having won both of their MRISA tournaments a few weeks earlier, the Phoenix have dominated MRISA Soccer in 2012-13! Congratulations to players and coaches! A special “THANK YOU” goes out to all the UNIS Hanoi families who hosted our 120 visiting guests! Your contributions to the success of the tournament is greatly appreciated! You’re the BEST!!! From the Activities Office ES Swimming Unit for Grades 2-5 and Invitation to Swim Meets For the last couple of weeks Elementary School students from Grades 2 to 5 have been participating in their annual PE swimming unit. The well-heated pool allows our students to have access to regular and enjoyable practices. The ES PE Swimming unit focuses on water confidence and strokes development, water safety activities, relays and preparation for the ES Swim Meets, scheduled on April 18th (Gr 2and 3) and May 24th (Gr 4 and 5). This school year the ES PE Swimming programme will be changing towards adapting the new Red Cross Learn-To-Swim programme (based on six levels). The new programme still focuses on teaching traditional swimming strokes, however new components of water safety and fitness swimming have been added. More information can be found at the portal’s Aquatics ES Learn-ToSwim page. In addition to changes in curricular swimming, the ASA swimming groups for next school year will be planned and offered based on this new six-level program, to support student learning. The ES PE Department are looking forward to the opportunity for students to demonstrate their skills and learning at the traditional PE Swimming Gala. On April 18 (for grades 2 & 3) and May 24 (grades 4 & 5), swim meets will be organized and will include dual parts to accommodate every student’s interests; individual events and team events, with short races and fun relays. All parents and friends are warmly welcome to attend the meets! Both meets will begin at 8:30AM. More information about swimming events can be found at the portal’s ES PE Special Events page. Please contact Aquatics Coordinator Ella Jaranova ejaranova@unishanoi.org for more info regarding upcoming swim meets or the new Learn-To-Swim programme.
