Notes from the Head of School Dear Parents, As we come up on Spring Break, I wish everyone a restful and rejuvenating vacation. There are only six weeks to go once we are back and there is a lot packed into that time. Here are some highlights that will serve as reminders. May 10 - 08:15 - The final Breakfast with the Head of School will be on this day in the Community Room. We hope to share some of the Campus Development Concepts that were developed by our consultant architect, Perkins-Eastman, at the end of last school year. There will also be plenty of time for questions. If you are planning to come and have a question, I invite you to send it to me ahead of time so I can prepare a more proper response. I also call your attention to another announcement in this Tin Tuc regarding the re-establishment of the Summer Camp. If you are going to be around for the two weeks after school is out, I highly encourage you to consider enrolling your child in this Camp. Notes from the Middle/High School Principal CONGRATULATIONS GRADE 5! I would like to offer my hearty congratulations to all our Grade 5 students who have just completed a phenomenal 7 weeks work for their PYP EXhibition, culminating last night in an impressive and memorable evening of presentation to parents, family and friends in the Centre for the Arts. The children have been in the foyer since early Monday morning setting up their stands and then presenting to visiting groups of students from ES and MSHS as well as from the French school and Hanoi International School. Despite being somewhat tired by Thursday evening, they were also excited and enthusiastic and all the children rose to the occasion to ensure they explained their thinking and understanding of their chosen issue. The array of topics was broad and all subjects which the adult world continues to grapple with. Our young learners showed some great insight and indeed optimism about how they could begin to make a difference and take some action themselves whilst encouraging visitors to their stand to do the same. As one of the Expression through the Arts students commented when asked about the teaching of the song they had composed to the Pre- K students- "You need to get them when they're still young!" Much is rightly made of the process of the Exhibition and the students own comments reflect their understanding of the steep learning curve they are on throughout Exhibition time. It is about setting goals and meeting new challenges as well as negotiation and compromise and overcoming any frustrations along the way. They had clearly enjoyed the greater freedom to choose a topic they felt passionately about and then to develop their independence as they explored the topic and took on responsibility for their own learning and time management. One adult visitor commented on what great project management skills they had learned and how this will stand them in good stead throughout life. Whilst the children have done a huge amount themselves, they have also been very ably supported along the way by all the Grade 5 team as well as the mentors who stepped up from across the school community to offer their time, expertise and encouragement. Huge thanks to all those who have contributed to make the Exhibition such a success. I believe we are all very proud of our Grade 5 students and wish them all a very well earned Spring Break. Notes from the Director of Learning Grade 6-8 Students Finish Spring MAP Testing Our students in grades 6-8 have completed their spring MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) tests and the MAP reports will be sent home electronically on Friday May 10 via the ISIS Family system. You will receive an email on that Friday indicating that your child’s report is ready and with additional information on how to access the report in ISIS. Please join us on Monday, May 13 in the Community Room from 18:00 - 18:45 to answer questions you may have about the test or about how to read the report. The purpose of this session will be to help you understand how to read the MAP report and to learn more about the MAP test in general. We encourage you to attend this session if you are new to UNIS or to the MAP test. This will not be a time to discuss your individual child’s results, but a general session to assist parents in understanding how to read the reports. Notes from the Diploma Programme Coordinator IB Diploma Exams Begin on Thursday next week. After two years of hard work and study the 12th grade students will begin sitting their culminating exams. Please make sure that they are getting the sleep and eating well, so they can do their best. As can be seen in the schedule below, the exams are held over a three week period, which allows the students ample opportunity to study between exams. The morning exams will begin at 08:00am and the afternoon session will begin at 1:00pm. Students need to be sure to arrive on time, have had a good night’s sleep and be ready to do well. Missed exams cannot, except in extraordinary circumstances, be made up, so students should make every effort to attend every scheduled session. See IB Exam Schedule 2013.

Notes from the ES Librarian Parents, The Library shall be asking students to participate in Book in a Box end of year Library Project. This is a HOME project and Spring Break is a great time to get started! Similar to last year’s Book in a Bag (see picture), students shall be asked to select a book of their choosing (fiction or nonfiction) and create a representation from the book. This can be a landscape with created scenery (like a diorama), and include pictures and artifacts— anything your child wishes to use to share the book’s story or information.

Earth Day messages from Kindergarten This week Kindergarten are rounding up our ‘Sharing the Planet’ Unit of Inquiry “Our personal choices about waste can change the environment.” Kindergarten have reduced their waste by trying to use less and tried to reuse some of the waste we created over the past 8 weeks. Students collected it and created practical things and works of art to sell. The proceeds from the shop will go towards buying trees, one tree will be a threatened species planted on campus, the remaining money will go to buy trees in the Atlantic Forest, Brazil http://www.plantabillion.org/ for more information.

Bamboo Bicycle Shelter Just over one year ago, a group of Grade 5 students (now Grade 6) were concerned that our bicycle parking area was over capacity – so they decided to do something about it. The group gave a compelling presentation to the UNIS Buildings and Facilities Committee in which they explained, with evidence, that overcrowding was evident in our existing bike shelter. In their presentation they proposed that UNIS Hanoi build a new shelter to accommodate the increasing number of bicycles on campus each day. The student’s efforts of persuasion came at a time when the UNIS Hanoi Green Team was developing the tools of our sustainable school strategy – The Green Grid. As well as encouraging alternative transport to get to school, the student’s proposal provided the perfect opportunity to address various items on the Grid. One key item on the Grid advocates the “Use of rapidly renewable materials”. It was this clause which inspired the idea to create something out of bamboo. Using bamboo as a building material is not just sustainable, it also resonates with one of the recommendations put forward by the CIS/WASC accreditation team following their visit to UNIS Hanoi in 2010; “the Administration, staff and students more actively display and celebrate the host country for its rich and bountiful culture”. Fast-forward a year and a huge pile of naturally-cured Luồng bamboo has arrived on campus from Thanh Hóa province and is currently being prepared for the construction of our bamboo bike shelter. Even now, in its dismantled state, the richness and natural beauty of this most Vietnamese of building materials is evident. With touch and smell it has an almost antique quality to it which can be attributed to three months of immersion and smoke-curing in line with traditional preparation methods. This preparation makes it beautiful and durable – our bike shelter comes with a 15 year guarantee. UNIS Hanoi enlisted the help of architect Võ Trọng Nghĩa who is responsible for some incredible bamboo creations – most recently the Bamboo Wing of the Flamingo Dai Lai resort in Vĩnh Phúc province, for which he has gained international recognition. Mr Nghĩa’s team have proposed an elegent and contemporary design for the bike shelter at UNIS which will be visible between B9 and the Grade 5 building. Construction is underway now and due for completion before the end of the school year. Teachers will be invited to bring students to the site to observe and learn more about bamboo design – contact the Green Team for more information. Another item on the UNIS Green Grid promotes a strong relationship between the built and the natural environment. Our bamboo bike shelter will stand not only to protect bicycles from the Hanoi weather, but will also be a reminder to all of the sustainable choices that can be made and the benefits to the campus that they bring. Operation Smile Charity Concert Last Sunday, April 21, the UNIS Smile Club organized their second annual ‘Smile Charity Concert’. This year’s special venue - the Hanoi Opera House. The concert, under the name “The Gift of Smile” was a charity event designed for the purpose of raising money and awareness to support Operation Smile, whilst providing an opportunity for students all over Hanoi to interact with each other, cooperate and showcase their talents. The show began with a special performance from the Hanoi Youth Dancing Group, followed by participating acts meticulously prepared by students from a variety of different schools, including Hanoi Amsterdam, Hanoi International School, Singapore International School, Viet Duc High School, Yen Hoa High School as well as some of our very own talents from UNIS. Some highlights from the show included the outstanding dance performance by UNIS’ beloved dance group ‘Pixelated’ who brought a massive amount of energy into the Opera House; the mesmerizing classical guitar performance by Duong Nguyen (Grade 10 UNIS); and several other solo acts. Weaved into the program were several special guest performances by famous Vietnamese singers, most notably Tran Hong Nhung, and Luu Huong Giang with her husband Ho Hoai Anh. The well-loved artist Thuy Chi, known for her soft angelic voice, also made an appearance to support the cause by performing two songs. The representative of Operation Smile in Asia also gave a brief speech about Operation Smile, its goals and mission. The concert was an outstanding success and raised approximately 100,000,000 VND to be donated to Operation Smile so that children all over Vietnam could be given the ‘gift of a smile’. A very special thank you to all the members of the UNIS Smile Group; the Amsterdam students who came to support; all the performers who contributed their exceptional talents; and everyone who came to support this wonderful cause! We will see you again next year!

UNIS Hanoi hosts APAC Girls Soccer The Asia Pacific Activities Conference (APAC) Girls Soccer Tournament for 2013 was hosted by UNIS on April 17-21. This was the first APAC sports tournament that UNIS has had the opportunity to host. The UNIS team, coached by Alan Hough and Phi Nguyen, was one of six participating schools in the tournament. The APAC organization consists of 12 schools, which are broken into two divisions of six schools each. UNIS is currently part of the Pacific Division, along with the following schools: Shanghai American School – Pudong (SAS-PD), Seoul Foreign School (SFS), Western Academy of Beijing (WAB), Hong Kong International School (HKIS) and Taejon Christian International School (TCIS). The other six APAC schools comprise the Asia Division. Each year schools rotate between divisions. In APAC, the soccer is played on a full-size pitch with 11-aside teams. Each team has a maximum of 17 players on their squad. Over three days of action, teams play 6 matches in total (2 each day). After playing a full round-robin schedule (5 matches), teams then determine the final standings through a series of play-off matches on Saturday afternoon, with the following match-ups: 5th vs. 6th, 3rd vs. 4th, and 1st vs. 2nd. The heat and humidity were definitely a factor over the three days, as players and coaches alike attempted to stay well hydrated. Despite the difficult playing conditions, the competition was fierce as the six teams battled to see who would be crowned as the 2013 APAC Champions. The defending champions from 2012 (HKIS and SFS) were both amongst the teams vying for the title. This APAC Tournament was only the second soccer tournament that UNIS Hanoi has been a part of. In Hong Kong one year ago, the Phoenix found the competition to be very challenging, suffering a number of rather one-sided losses. The big question was how the team would fare this year in front of their home community. The answer was obvious by the time they had reached the first half of their first game, when they were up against one of the APAC powers in girls’ soccer – SFS. The UNIS girls showed character, commitment and a never-say-die attitude, that made each of their six games very competitive. It was no longer of a case of teams having an easy game when they came up against the UNIS girls. Despite the fact that their games all ended in narrow defeats, the players and coaches walked away from the tournament with their heads held high. Well done girls! Next year they’ve got the Super-12 tournament to look forward to in Shanghai! On an individual note, Sidney Hong from UNIS was selected as a member of the APAC All-Tournament Team! In general, the matches throughout the tournament were extremely tight and there was very little to choose between the six teams, with the majority of games being determined by only one or two goals. The parity amongst the teams was reflected by the fact that both the 3rd/4th place match and the championship match needed to go to penalty kicks before a winner could be decided. With darkness threatening to become a factor in the final match, SAS-PD overcame SFS on penalty kicks, after the teams had played to a 1-1 draw during normal time and with neither team scoring the decisive goal in extra-time. Congratulations to the girls from Shanghai American School-Pudong….the 2013 APAC Pacific Division Champions!

International SOS Clinic, along with the UNIS nursing staff, provided medical services throughout the event, ensuring the health and safety of all the competitors. Their contributions are greatly appreciated! Thank you for your time and effort! To all those who came out and supported the event and the UNIS, by watching matches over the three days….thank you for showing school spirit! The next APAC event on the UNIS campus will be next October, when boys and girls volleyball will take over the Sports Center. Hope to see you there! GO PHOENIX!!
By Jemima and Darikha It had been 8 months of football training for one tournament. We trained hard and we were excited to invite the coming teams onto our home ground, and have support from our peers behind us. We started the competition playing against the defending champions Seoul Foreign School . We battled hard and, unfortunately, lost 2-0. The scores did not always reflect the games, but everyone who was there to witness the tournament, can easily say that we were a challenge to each and every team. We'd like to say a massive thank you to our coaches Mr Hough, Mr Phi, and Mr Brennen. Without their continuing support, pressure, motivational speeches, commitment, dedication to get us in shape (everybody loves fitness…) we wouldn’t have been remotely close to being as successful as we were when the final whistle was blown. Even though half of our team is still recovering (forehead stitches, fractured wrist, broken ankles..) it was a fabulous experience and we'll be ready next year! LETS GO PHOENIX !

Job Opportunities Middle School English Immersion Teacher (Grades 6-7) UNIS Hanoi has experienced steady year-on-year growth in our student population, which currently stands at over 1,000 students from 63 different countries. We are now accepting applications for a Middle School English Immersion Teacher (Grades 6 and 7). The English Immersion Teacher will report to the Middle School/High School Principal. Key responsibilities: The English Immersion Teacher will teach all students assigned to the Immersion Class until they are ready to graduate from the programme and join mainstream classes. He/She will liaise with teachers of the EAL Mainstream programmes regarding exiting and transition. Additionally he/she will actively help promote a learning and teaching environment which builds on learners’ linguistic and cultural identities, acknowledging and understanding their past experiences and learning contexts. Teaching and Learning Ensure that EAL Immersion students are identified effectively through appropriate assessment and observation
procedures Teach groups of EAL learners across the two Grade levels Develop a timetable which best suits the varied needs of the group members Monitor the learners when they join their mainstream class for integrated activities in the classroom, in order to further
plan appropriate support Teach a broad curriculum that parallels mainstream learning objectives Establish a coherent partnership with subject teachers whereby they feel supported in meeting student’s EAL learning
needs Contribute to the development of the learning environment in all EAL learning areas, creating and maintaining a
comfortable, stimulating and well resourced environment which values learners’ achievements and promotes success and high self-esteem Monitor and evaluate the progress of EAL learners
Communication Meet regularly with the MSHS Principal, EAL and department members to participate in discussions, feedback and
planning sessions Communicate and cooperate effectively with the EAL teachers to ensure a smooth transition between the immersion
programme and EAL support in the mainstream (Grade 6-8) Communicate and work cooperatively with subject teachers and Heads of Departments Compile and maintain the EAL Immersion register Establish and maintain an Immersion handbook Assist with the induction and support of new EAL students and their families Facilitate and promote positive relationships between home and school Report to parents at parent consultation meetings and through reports Be available to parents at other mutually agreed times as needed
