We utilise knowledge resources across many different fields to support industry - focus is placed on the pooling and linking of capability. We develop knowledge, train people and work with our partners to apply fundamental research with application in the field.
The University of Auckland is committed to helping our partners meet the demands of global, social and economic change AgriTech Initiatives at The University of Auckland • Joint Graduate School in Dairy Research and Innovation has been established in partnership with DairyNZ, LIC (Livestock Improvement Corporation) and AgResearch to facilitate increased collaboration within the sector and ensure high quality post graduate students. • The Wine Microbiology group has broad research interests spanning ecological and evolutionary process, population and community biology, and the mechanisms behind the biological and chemical formation of aroma compounds in grape juice and wine. They largely use microbes and wine production as our model system to test a vast array of both fundamental and applied research questions. • Cross Faculty Research - a number of initiatives have been embedded within the research environment to ensure the connecting of ideas across research areas. It is of critical importance to ensure innovation strength in the search for solutions to the major challenges that lie ahead.
Current AgriTech Projects at The University of Auckland Our AgriTech research brings together a unique core of expertise in engineering, biological sciences and processes, food and health. • Programme employing advanced molecular technologies (genomics, proteomics and metabolomics) to understand bovine function and ultimately contribute to the genetic gain of the national herd. • Robotics, mechatronics and computer vision technologies utilised to automate pasture measurement. The research will inform on-farm practices to optimise pasture utilisation and increase productivity on-farm. • Chemists, biologists and biomedical experts are undertaking ground breaking research in developing novel approaches to managing health and fertility in production animals. • Identification of “natural” biological controls and analogues to manage disease in viticulture, fruit crops, animal pests and pasture. • Animal nutritional studies investigating efficacy of supplements on a production animal’s early development, health status and lifetime productivity.
