4 Welcome to New Zealand (Aotearoa)

A beautiful piece of paradise in the South Pacific, New Zealand is a country of contrasts. From tropical forests to white sand beaches, and towering mountains to bubbling hot springs, the scenery is spectacular. Then there are New Zealand’s modern and vibrant cities bursting with world-class restaurants, galleries, theatres and museums. Keen for adventure? You can ski, sail, hike, sky dive and mountain bike your way around the country. Or simply enjoy the relaxed lifestyle and clean air that Kiwis take for granted.

Did you know that New Zealand is repeatedly voted one of the world’s most peaceful countries according to the Global Peace Index? With just over four million people, New Zealand has a really diverse population. The indigenous Māori people were the first inhabitants of Aotearoa and today New Zealanders come from all over the world, including the Pacific Islands, Asia, Africa, the Americas and Europe. New Zealand welcomes everyone, practises all forms of religion, and enjoys political debate and freedom of speech. We were the first country in the world to give women the vote, and are proud to be nuclear free!

Kiwi speak Choice/awesome – great! Dairy – corner store Jandals – flip flops Gidday – hello Kia ora – hello/greetings Tu meke – too much! Sneakers – trainers Ranchslider – patio door Lollies – sweets, candy Motorway – freeway Footpath – sidewalk Yeh yeh nah yeh –yes! No worries – that’s fine Sweet as – yes, that’s good

5 Living in Auckland (Tamaki Makau Rau)

The Māori name for Auckland is Tamaki Makau Rau, which means ‘city of many lovers’. And it’s true – we love Auckland and we are sure you will too!

Did you know? Auckland is New Zealand’s biggest city – around one third of the population lives here, about 1.4 million people. It’s also the largest Polynesian city in the world. According to Mercer Quality of Living survey, Auckland is currently ranked as the third best city to live in the world! Auckland’s major businesses include information and computer technology, biotechnology and the creative industries. Health, construction, viticulture and food manufacturing are also important. Auckland is often called the city of sails because the harbour is full of hundreds of yachts. In fact, there are more yachts per person than in any other city in the world. At 328 metres high, Auckland’s iconic Sky Tower is the tallest building in New Zealand.

Yearly events in Auckland

- check out the events calendar www.eventfinder.co.nz Music in the Parks From January to April every year, free music concerts take place in parks across the city. From international rock stars to New Zealand’s best jazz and blues musicians and every musical genre in between.

The Lantern Festival

Diwali Festival of Lights

Every February Auckland celebrates Chinese New Year in style with hundreds of beautiful lanterns, food, fortune telling and fireworks in Albert Park.

Each October, the Hindu festival of Diwali lights up the Auckland sky with fireworks. It’s a great opportunity to experience and celebrate Indian dance, music and food.

Devonport, Waiheke Island and Kumeu Wine and Food Festivals

Silo Sessions

Taste the best of New Zealand’s food, wine and beer at these popular food festivals that happen each summer.

Round the Bays Fun Run For a fantastic day out in March, join 40,000 participants in an 8.4km run or walk around Auckland’s beautiful waterfront and enjoy a barbeque at the end!

Auckland Arts Festival This dazzling event only happens once every two years and it’s worth the wait! During March more than 500 artists perform in over 75 different events at galleries, museums, parks and theatres across Auckland.

Pasifika Festival Held every March, this is a colourful festival of music, food and dance to celebrate the different cultures of the Pacific Islands including Fiji, Tonga and Samoa.

International Film Festival See the very best in international and independent film making from New Zealand and around the world at this annual festival in July and August.

Sports Events Aucklanders love their sport and there are always live games to watch. Whether you’re a rugby, netball, basketball or soccer fan, you’ll find these sports being played all over Auckland.

Fancy some free entertainment? Watch classic films on Friday nights and listen to live music on Saturday afternoons at Auckland’s new waterfront development, Silo Park. While you’re there, shop for crafts, fashion and food, as well as local wines and beer, at Silo market.

From your study to employment opportunities Choosing what to study

Variation to Work Visa

Part-time jobs

At Unitec you can build a study programme to suit you. This means starting your studies at the right level and then progressing to more advanced programmes as you need to. You will be taught by lecturers who are experts in their field and have excellent connections in their industry.

During your studies, if you are eligible to work 20 hours per week, Immigration New Zealand (INZ) will include this condition on your Student Visa. This allows you to work part-time during the academic year (February to December). You are then able to apply for a further Variation to Work Visa, which allows you to work full-time during the summer holidays (December to February). Visit www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant for more information.

There are all sorts of part-time jobs in Auckland throughout the year including hospitality, office work and retail. Some part-time jobs may continue throughout the semester, some may just be for a few days. Employers in NZ must abide by the laws when hiring staff so make sure you know what the law is: http://dol.govt.nz/er/

Many Unitec programmes include a work placement, which can give you a competitive advantage when you start applying for jobs.

Our graduates find jobs Many of our graduates find employment in Auckland or other parts of New Zealand because employers are always looking for the combination of theory and practical skills that you gain at Unitec. Others choose to settle in other countries, as your qualification will be internationally recognised. The practical experience you will bring to the workplace will be invaluable, no matter where in the world you go.

Graduate Job Search Visa (GJS) Once you have completed your studies and if you are eligible, you can apply for the GJS visa.

Inland Revenue Department (IRD) You must apply to the IRD for a tax number. This is the number you give to your employer and your bank so that you are not paying the highest rate of tax on your earnings. Visit www.ird.govt.nz for more information.

Where to look for work There are many places to find both full-time and part-time work, such as: > Student Job Search www.sjs.org.nz > Unitec's Career Centre at the Mt Albert campus. The staff here will help you with employment skills, including writing your resume, interview skills and advice about where to look for a job. Visit www.career.unitec.ac.nz for more information > Check out the local newspaper www.nzherald.co.nz > Popular job hunting websites are www.seek.co.nz www.trademe.co.nz and www.search4jobs.co.nz

Our qualifications are recognised both internationally and locally because they are also endorsed by wellknown companies who recognise the trade skills that Unitec provides.

“New Zealand is the first country that I have ever been to. I feel so lucky that I have such a great opportunity to visit such a peaceful country like New Zealand. I believe once I graduate from Unitec, the knowledge that I have gained will support my work in my own country because the institute provides practical courses and experiences that can apply in real situations. My favourite thing about Unitec is the campus, which has large green fields with trees and birds and peaceful areas; and it is not far from the city centre!”

Poini Palu, Tonga Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Civil)

"When I chose to study civil engineering, I was worried that I would not be ready for it. English was not my first language but when I started my first year in 2011, the resources that were available at Unitec helped assist me. The library facilities, Te Puna Ako, Pacific Centre, my tutors and one-on-one session with my lecturers all made things easier than I had expected. In my second year, I became a Tutorial Assistant as well. I'm now in my final year and I am also working part-time for a leading engineering consultant based in Auckland. The opportunities that I got are because of the recommendations from my brilliant lecturers at Unitec. They have helped me every step of the way and have prepared me for the workforce. I cannot wait to graduate; however, I will miss Unitec. The free gym, the friends I have made, the opportunities that were given to me and also the chance to improve my English. Malo 'aupito."

Hnin Pwint Soe, Myanmar Master of Education

"When I was looking for institutions in Auckland, I heard about Unitec's good education programme and I chose Unitec for its education faculty. I often communicate with my lecturers outside of classes to work on my assignments. I have learnt and experienced self-discipline, time management and self-learning which I think is an essential part of my postgraduate study. When I started to think about my thesis, I realised more about which education area I would like to work in (to find a job) in the future. By receiving an education from Unitec, I believe that I would be able to help improve my country's education through current education reform."

Education

www.education.unitec.ac.nz

All Unitec’s education programmes are underpinned by values that acknowledge students as diverse individuals with widely differing needs. Throughout your study, you will focus on improving your practice through self-reflection and critical enquiry. Unitec caters for both professional educators and research students, and offers a range of education programmes – from an undergraduate degree in early childhood education to a doctorate in education research. Our academic staff are actively engaged in research, supported by up-to-date technology and facilities, and responsive to the communities they serve. My teachers have been wonderful and they not only have good knowledge in their respective fields but also have great teaching skills. Unitec is the best choice. It is challenging enough for me, but the programme is practical and improves my English very effectively. The environment at Unitec is friendly and international. As with any new environment, it can be hard, but I didn't feel any difficulty in joining Unitec. In such a beautiful campus and with good teachers, every day is like a new day to me."

Ayesha Beyersbergen, Canada Bachelor of Applied Science (Animal Welfare and Management and Biodiversity Management)

“I learn by doing, I wanted to attend an institution that would enable me to use my learning style. I’ve always liked the idea of travelling, this way I could both study and see some of the world! I love my classes and they aren’t just based in the class room and my lecturers want to see me succeed. I feel I can easily approach any of my lecturers which has made the transition to a new country that much easier. I thought it would be hard to make friends, but I met great people on the first day that I am still close with.”

Maria (Masha) Alekseeva, Russia Graduated from the Bachelor of Sport (Management)

"As a graduate of Unitec, I love what I'm doing now where I get to apply my degree at work - the biggest recreation provider in the country, the YMCA. In my second year, I chose my specialisation which made it an easy study choice. Besides, I knew that Unitec is very supportive and emphasis is on real, practical knowledge. This does not get any better for a degree in sport! The classes are personal, lecturers see value in every person, the classes are small enough to get to know everyone, as well as to have time face-to-face with your lecturer. Several courses in the Sport programme are designed to build links with the industry as you study, so this was a big help."

Sport

www.sport.unitec.ac.nz

Turn your interest for sports into a career. The professional nature of sport today requires managers, coaches and consultants who understand the needs of recreational participants and high-performance athletes. Our programmes bring you into contact with top industry players in sport, fitness and physical recreation, as well as with professional athletes.

Start with a programme that suits your qualifications and/or experience, then progress to a level that achieves your goals. Check the programme admission requirements for details.

50 Your learning classroom

The theory, your knowledge Regardless of the programme you choose, your theoretical knowledge is an integral part of your learning process. You will attend lectures, tutorials, workshops and also participate in the classroom.

Your practice Practical knowledge goes hand-in-hand with theoretical knowledge so that's why you do both here. Industry Based Learning is part of the curriculum across the Unitec programmes, which allows you to put into practice what you have learnt in the classroom. This means when you step out into the workforce or further study, you have the knowledge and experience to succeed.

Your programme, your experience Accounting and finance, and management and marketing students apply to take part in Industry Based Learning, a work placement in an actual business organisation. Bachelor of Computing Systems students complete a semester-long work project for an organisation of their choice. Bachelor of Construction students are encouraged to work in the construction industry in the last two years of their degree. Boatbuilding students create a variety of project boats. In 2011, one of them, Karma Police, successfully held its own against much larger boats in the Round the North Island Race. Design and visual arts students can display their work at the on-campus galleries and at the end-of-year Grad Show. This is great exposure which often leads to commercial offers for their work.

Early childhood education students work in an early childhood education centre throughout their studies. Landscape students work on designs for real sites with real clients, contributing to the development of public and private spaces. Natural science students develop their skills through placements at the Department of Conservation, MAF Biosecurity, the SPCA or the Auckland Zoo. Performing and screen arts students perform in front of a live audience at our on-campus theatre and work together to create numerous short films throughout the year. Sport students take part in work placements in a variety of sport and fitness orgnisations. They also develop their skills in the Human Performance Lab, a sports science lab also used by upcoming athletes. Veterinary nursing students work on real cases at the Unitec Veterinary Clinic and the country's first dedicated Veterinary Specialist Group Hospital, located at our Mt Albert campus.

The exchange programme was easy because I was able to pay my Unitec tuition fees while I was overseas, and the courses were easy to crosscredit back to my degree. 63 Application for credit recognition/cross-credits from study at Unitec or other tertiary institutions in NZ or overseas – instructions for form SAF 005

Guidelines for credit recognition/cross-credits Please note:

The maximum credits ever granted is half a programme, but the actual credits granted will vary according to individual assessment, as credits are based on how similar your previous courses are to Unitec’s courses. If you want to apply for cross-credits, you need to: » Obtain detailed course descriptions (in English) from the previous institution you studied at » Complete the Application for Credit Recognition/Cross-credits (online or in the International Prospectus) » Please apply for credits at least two months before the semester begins; do not leave it too late as the process can take 2-3 months, and credits approved more than two weeks after the semester begins will not affect your enrolment (ie you will not be able to withdraw from the courses or apply for a refund due to the credits). Credit applications received less than two months before the semester begins may not be assessed in time, and applications received less than one month in advance will not be assessed in time. Note: If the previous qualification is from New Zealand – Please take these items to any Student Central office on campus. (If you are in your final semester, bring your results so far, plus confirmation of the courses you are currently enrolled in. Provisional assessment can be made on this basis; your final results will be required to confirm any credits provisionally granted.) If the previous qualification is from a country other than New Zealand – Please apply through the International Office; email the credit application form and course outlines as pdf or Word documents if possible as this allows faster assessment than hard copies. STEP 1: CHECKLIST

Please complete and sign the SAF005 form and attach the following documents** 1. Verified true copy of academic record stating grades achieved and/or NZQA record of learning (do not send original documents) 2. Prescription/course outline/full course descriptor for each course you wish to transfer credit from and where applicable: 3. Verified and translated to English a true copy of degree/diploma certificate for completed qualifications 4. Details of applicable work experience (eg for Nursing where regulations allow for credit on the basis of supervised practice following registration) 5. Verified true copy of related qualifications and details of any additional relevant courses completed ** Where a verified/attested/certified copy is referred to above, you must provide a copy of each document certified by a Justice of the Peace, solicitor or authorised Unitec agent with the following statement “I have sighted the original of this document and confirm that this is a true copy”. STEP 2: SUBMIT THIS FORM with the International Student Application Form (there is no payment required with the form) Please post, deliver or courier The completed SAF005 Cross-credit form and the other documents listed above, securely attached To: Unitec, International Office, 139 Carrington Road, Mt Albert, Auckland 1025, New Zealand or by mail to Private Bag 92025, Victoria St West, Auckland 1142, New Zealand. Further information All cross-credits granted are provisional until approved by the Programme Committee. The student will be formally advised of the Programme Committee’s decision in writing. Cross-credits are only applicable to the programme for which they are approved. They cannot be reassigned to another programme. The information on this form and on any attachments will be covered by the NZ Privacy Act 1993 and by Unitec’s Privacy of Information policy. Go to www.unitec.ac.nz and search for Privacy Policy for

further details. Unitec reserves the right to seek confirmation of the authenticity and accuracy of any documentation provided by other tertiary institutions or referees.

Definitions from Academic Statute: “Assessment of Prior Learning (APL)” is a process in which evidence of achievement of outcomes is assessed by Unitec staff. “Cross-credit” means the award of credit in recognition of successful equivalent study, at the same or a higher level, in the context of another programme and in accordance with the institution’s policy on credit recognition.
