WELCOME

TO UNITEC OPEN DAY It’s your chance to look around, find out anything you want to know and get a feel for life on campus. Choosing where you want to study isn’t best done by only looking at a prospectus. You need to get a feel for what it’s like to be part of a place; to put yourself in the shoes of being a student and soak up the atmosphere. That’s why we proudly throw open our doors on Open Day so you can check us out first hand. We hope it lets you imagine what it might be like to study here. And, if you have questions on any aspect of campus life, feel free to ask one of the members of staff you’ll find around the place. Free Wifi is available on campus today Network: UnitecOpenDay Password: OpenDay2017

Sometimes a little help can go a long way to making you feel more at home on campus. Māori Centre

International Students

The centre offers support services for all students including cultural support, pastoral guidance and Māori community development.

However far you’ve come to study at Unitec, we want you to feel at home and know where to go for help if you need it. Our friendly team at the International Office (located in Building 48, Mt Albert campus) can help with visa or insurance support, choosing or changing your course or study programme, connect you with events and each other, and more.

Pacific Centre Current, future Unitec students and their families, can turn to the centre for support to achieve their goals. The Pacific Centre is open to everyone and offers all kinds of personal support as well as special events for Pasifika students and their fanau.

STUDENT SERVICES As a student at Unitec you’ll benefit from a range of support services to ease your way through academic life and deal with other issues you might face. Student Central

Student Council The Student Council is the collective voice of students. Its purpose is to support and encourage students through whatever issues or concerns arise on campus. If you want to give back, you can even become a Student Rep. It’s a great way to influence your education, contribute to campus life and learn valuable skills.

STUDENT ESSENTIALS

Unsure what it takes to make your way though student life? Fear not. Here are some handy tips on what you’ll need. Comms

Music

Just like normal life, student life depends on being in touch at all times. Whether that’s about finding your next place to refuel or wishing your mates good luck as they brave their exams.

Blocking out distractions can be crucial. Play Spotify through your headphones at all times.

Student ID Keep your student ID on you at all times. Use it to print, borrow library items, and book study rooms. If you end up at a party, make sure the ID you leave with is yours…

WIFI As you’ll find at Open Day free WiFi is available all over campus whenever you’re in range. Your free Wifi is UnitecOpenDay and the password today is OpenDay2017. 18

Open Day 2017

SOS Writing Material Using your phone to record lectures, rather than taking notes, can be a useful hack (if you're near the front), but never be without pens, pencils and paper. You never know when you’ll need to draw a map, take notes or write a phone number.

Nutrition The ‘caffeine and cram’ approach has a number of better alternatives. So, while there are places to grab a great Java on campus, healthy eating is also on the menu. Look after your body and your mind will look after itself…

Dress for Success Auckland might be warmer than Gore but there’s still all sorts of weather on offer. Will you need a puffer jacket? A raincoat? Shorts? Sunnies and hat? Yes.

HERE WHEN YOU NEED US There’s a saying in Māori: 'Kāhore taku toa i te toa takitahi, he toa takitini‘ or 'We cannot succeed without the support of those around us'. In other words, it's tough doing everything on your own. That’s why we have a range of services to help students with everything from sickness to IT support, and even housing. Health Centre

Pharmacy

The Student Health Centre on the Mt Albert campus provides all the medical and healthcare services you need to stay well. Domestic students can register here for cheaper doctor’s visits and prescriptions. International students are also welcome to register, and if you’re insured with Unicare or Unitec Southern Cross they can manage your claims.

Unitec Mart Pharmacy sells bus and train tickets, food and drinks, and general pharmacy items. Students get a 10% discount on over-thecounter pharmacy products.

Counselling The Counselling Service supports students with confidential counselling to get you through study or personal matters, and is available at both campuses. It’s free for domestic students, and international students are covered through their health insurance. 20

Open Day 2017

Disability Support The Disability Centre offers support and services for students with a range of disabilities or impairments. Support services include note-takers, readers/writers, sign language interpreters and information on accessible car parks. A range of assistive technology devices are also available to support your learning. Our centre is based at the Mt Albert campus, but learning support for students is provided across both campuses.

IT Support Our Information Management Services (IMS) are there to support you while you use Unitec’s IT systems, Wi-Fi networks and computer labs. They can help resolve any login or access issues, and offer free workshops to help you get the most from our IT services while you study.

Accommodation Campus Living Villagers (CLV) manage our on-campus accommodation for students. There are also a number of accommodation options local to campus.

Unitec Institute of Technology
