Music in the Parks

Waiheke Jazz Festival

International Film Festival

From January to April every year free music concerts take place in parks across the city. From international rock stars to New Zealand’s best jazz and blues musicians, and every musical genre in between.

In April you can listen to world-famous musicians and hear new talent at this weekend festival that celebrates jazz in all its forms.

See the very best in international and independent film making from New Zealand and around the world at this annual festival in July and August.

Every February Auckland celebrates Chinese New Year in style with hundreds of beautiful lanterns, food, fortune telling and fireworks in Albert Park.

During April and May comedians from all over the world travel to Auckland to make you laugh. With sketch shows, improvisation and even musical comedy there is something for everyone.

Each October, the Hindu festival of Diwali lights up the Auckland sky with fireworks.

It’s a great opportunity to experience and celebrate Indian dance, music and food.

Matariki Festival

For a fantastic day out in March, join 40,000 participants in an 8.4km run or walk around Auckland’s beautiful waterfront and enjoy a barbeque at the end!

Matariki - New Zealand’s Māori New Year – is celebrated each June when the Matariki star cluster rises in our sky. It’s a great chance to soak up New Zealand’s indigenous culture as Auckland celebrates with traditional dance performances, art exhibitions, kite flying and concerts.

Fancy some free entertainment? Watch classic films on Friday nights and see live music on Saturday afternoons at Auckland’s new waterfront development, Silo Park.

While you’re there, shop for crafts, fashion and food, as well as local wines and beer, at Silo market.

Devonport, Waiheke Island and Kumeu Wine and Food Festivals Taste the best of New Zealand’s food, wine and beer at these popular food festivals that happen each summer.

Pasifika Festival Held every March, this colourful festival of music, food and dance celebrates the different cultures of the Pacific Islands including Fiji, Tonga and Samoa.

Auckland Restaurant Month Sample the best of Kiwi cooking throughout August when Auckland’s restaurants showcase their specialities. With limited edition menus, foodie events and celebrity chefs, it’s a treat for food lovers.

Te Puna Ako Learning Centre provides course-specific support and help with general study skills.

Transport options

If you want the buzz and security of living on campus, Unitec has a range of accommodation available. The options range from studios to five-bedroom apartments which are all self-catered. Each apartment (apart from the studio) has a separate bedroom, lounge, bathroom (or two) and a well-equipped kitchen. Your furnished bedroom has a comfortable bed, some storage, space to study and a connection for a phone and computer (please note that if you require a fast broadband connection, then that is your responsibility). There is parking available and also an on-site laundry.

Living with a homestay family is a great way to practise your English language skills and experience Kiwi life. All homestay students have their own room and get two meals a day during the week and three meals a day at the weekends. The cost is approximately NZD 270 per week (for 12 weeks), plus a placement fee of NZD 250 and an optional airport pick-up fee of NZD 80. Meet and greet

Flats/Apartments You can also arrange your own accommodation in an apartment or flat. Rent is likely to be about NZD 170 to NZD 200 per week, and you also need about NZD 150 a week for transport, food, power etc. You can arrange to rent a flat or apartment when you get to New Zealand – either through a real estate agent or by answering advertisements in the newspaper or online. If you choose to stay at the Unitec Residential Village, a friendly pick-up service is available from Auckland airport for a fee of NZD 65. If you want to be met at the airport on arrival, please fill in the form at least five days before you arrive in Auckland. Airport Super Shuttle Super Shuttle is a reliable, easy and cost effective airport transfer option from Auckland International Airport to your final destination. Airbus Express The Airbus Express is available at Auckland International Airport every 15 minutes in the daytime, and every 30 minutes in the evening and through the night. This is a good transport option if you are heading into Auckland city centre. We recommend that you explore your transport options from the city to your final destination. Study Abroad or Student Exchange?

Student Exchange

The Unitec Study Abroad programme allows students from overseas institutions to enrol for one or two semesters. The courses you take at Unitec can be from different disciplines and you pay a set tuition fee to Unitec per semester. If you’re interested in enrolling as a Study Abroad student, please check with your university/institution to ensure that you can credit your Unitec courses back to your studies at home.

The Unitec Student Exchange programme is available for students from our exchange partner institutions. As a Unitec exchange student, you pay your normal tuition fees to your home institution for the one or two semesters that you will be enrolled at Unitec. Your application for exchange must be approved and processed by your home institution and you must ensure that the courses you wish to enrol in at Unitec can be credited back to your home degree.

Please refer to our website www.studyabroad.unitec.ac.nz for the current tuition fees. The all-inclusive fee applies whether you choose to take three or four courses, and covers services at Unitec, including student support and International Student Orientation.

Eligibility of health services

A listing of all courses enrolled in and grades.

Most international students are not entitled to publicly-funded health services in New Zealand. If you receive medical treatment during your visit, you may be liable for the full cost of that treatment. Full details on entitlements to publicly-funded health services are available through the Ministry of Health and can be viewed on their website www.moh.govt.nz

Attendance As required by conditions of your student visa, your attendance will be monitored.

Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students Unitec is a signatory to the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students published by the Ministry of Education. Copies of the Code are available on request from Unitec or from the New Zealand Ministry of Education website at www.minedu.govt.nz/goto/international

Cost of living The recommended living allowance you will need for each academic year is approximately NZD 15, 000 for accommodation and general living expenses.

Planning your application Entry requirements

Full-time study

Levels

Unitec aims to accommodate students in classes at an appropriate level in relation to their previous study experience and skills.

A full-time programme of study at Unitec is considered to be 45 – 60 credits per semester. Your decision to take a certain amount of credits will depend on the requirements of your home institution and the level of courses.

The levels are standardised across New Zealand to the standards set by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).

Level 5 courses are first-year bachelor courses and do not normally require prerequisite courses for entry. Levels 6 and 7 indicate increased difficulty and complexity and rely on prior knowledge of the subject area. Evidence of meeting prerequisites is required for entry to level 6 and 7 courses.

Academic Study Abroad students must meet equivalent requirements in their home country for entry to degree programmes and have a good academic record.

English language Students whose first language is not English must demonstrate their proficiency in the English language. Acceptable academic measures include an overall band score of 6.0 in academic IELTS with no band less than 5.5,or 550 (213) in TOEFL with a TWE score of no less than 4.5 or 79 for internet-based TOEFL. Where English is the medium of instruction at a student’s home university, this may be accepted as evidence of adequate English language proficiency.

Academic year Arrival dates should be planned carefully to include the International Orientation Day, which is usually the Wednesday before the semester starts. Leaving dates should be planned to include examinations. You must be available up until the last published date of the semester to sit an exam, so please do not organise return flights before this date. Course results and transfer of credit At the completion of your programme of studies at Unitec, you will receive a Notification of Course Results. An official academic transcript is available on application at a cost of NZD 25. Students should secure advance approval from their home universities for the particular courses in which they wish to enrol. It is strongly recommended that such arrangements be made prior to accepting a place at Unitec.

Unitec credits

Closing dates for applications Apply early! Applications that arrive three months prior to course commencement are likely to be processed in time for students to plan their travel and accommodation without difficulty. Later applications are less likely to get their first course choices.

Processing your application

One Unitec credit point is equal to 10-12 student learning hours. Hours include teaching, preparation of assessment requirements, reading and personal study.

Applications are considered individually, on a case-by-case basis. Fully-completed applications that include all requested information are processed more quickly. All applications are acknowledged on receipt.

Course codes

Accepting an Offer of Place

The course codes are usually four letters, which indicate the area of study (e.g. COMM for Communication, SPOR for Sport etc.) followed by four digits.

Full details about how to accept (or decline) an Offer of Place, how to pay tuition fees, and how to arrange accommodation will be included with your offer.

Complete the application form. Provide a reliable email address and write it clearly – most communication will be done by email.

List eight courses in order of preference, in case your first choice is not available, or there are timetable clashes. Choose courses that interest you, that are at an appropriate level for your previous study, and that are available in the right semester. Check that all course choices meet the requirements of your home institution.

Provide evidence of prerequisites (or prior learning), where required.

This should include your academic record, which lists courses you have studied at degree level.

Attach a certified copy of your passport and evidence of English language proficiency.

Submit your application and wait for your Offer of Place letter.

Students who wish to defer to the following semester must notify International no less than two weeks prior to the programme commencement. c. There is no automatic right to a refund of fees if a student changes his/her mind about studying at Unitec. d. If an international student is on a Unitec student visa and fails to enrol there will be no refund for the period the visa was granted.

e. All applications for refunds must be on the Application for Refund form (obtainable from Unitec International) and submitted in writing to the International office.

Applications for refunds will be considered under the following categories a. INZ has refused to grant an initial student visa for study in New Zealand. b. INZ has refused to extend a student visa.

Unitec is unable to proceed with the programme or classes offered.

Other refunds a. If a student wishes to withdraw from their programme and an International Application for Refund is received by International no less than two weeks

prior to the semester start date, a refund of 80% of tuition fees will be given.

There will be no refund for International Applications for Refund received after this time. All refunds will be paid into the student’s account in their home country on sighting evidence that the student concerned has returned to their home country, or to the student in NZ on sighting a changed visa (e.g. Visitors Visa or Work Permit). In all instances INZ will be notified. b. The Director of International may approve refunds on a compassionate basis in exceptional circumstances (such as serious illness etc). The amount of the refund will be at the discretion of the Director of International
