ACCOMMODATION Looking for a place to live while you study? There are plenty of options – from renting a room in an off-campus flat to on-campus rental apartments and homestays. You’ll want to organise your accommodation prior to your arrival in New Zealand. If you’re an international student under the age of 18, you may live with a parent(s), a designated caregiver, or an approved homestay family. If you’re 18 and over you can choose a family homestay, shared-living homestay or arrange for your own accommodation.
OFF-CAMPUS: FLATTING Flatting is renting a room in a shared house. Your room is private, but the lounge, kitchen and bathroom are shared. You and your flatmates are responsible for cooking and cleaning, and for paying the bills. Rooms are often unfurnished, so you might need to buy some furniture when you arrive. You can find cheap options in local second-hand shops. See trademe.co.nz or nzflatmates. co.nz for more information.
ON-CAMPUS: RENTAL APARTMENTS As a budget-friendly option, you may want to rent a room in a shared apartment on the Unitec campus. These apartments are independently managed - visit crockers.co.nz or call 0800 2762 5377 for more information.
HOMESTAY For most international students, living with a local family is a great way to settle into a new country. Unitec has partnered with Host Families NZ for homestay services so that students can experience living a New Zealand lifestyle. This includes two meals on weekdays and three on weekends. As per the code of practice, students under the age of 18 would need to be in an approved homestay facility or live with a guardian or designated caregiver in NZ. Here are the costs: • Placement Fee: $235 • Admin Fee: $150 • Airport Pick- up: $100 (one-way) • Weekly Homestay Charge: $300-350 per week

CODE OF PRACTICE
Prioritising the well-being & care of our international students
We have an important responsibility to ensure that all international students that come to study with us are well-informed, safe, and properly cared for – and we take this responsibility seriously. Unitec is bound by the Education (Pastoral Care of International Students) Code of Practice 2016, as set out by the New Zealand Ministry of Education. The Code of Practice sets out minimum standards of advice and care that you can expect from us while you’re studying in New Zealand.

UNITEC’S COMPLIANCE WITH THE CODE OF PRACTICE If you have concerns about your experience at Unitec, the code provides a procedure you can follow for confidential advice or to lay a complaint. The first step is to try and resolve any issue by using Unitec’s internal student complaints process. If your complaint isn’t resolved, you can take your complaint to one of the following agencies:
NZQA
ISTUDENT COMPLAINTS

iStudent complaints is the appointed operator of the International Student Contract Dispute Resolution Scheme (DRS) which was set up to resolve financial and contractual disputes. Code signatories are required to comply with the International Student Contract Dispute Resolution Scheme Rules 2016.

INSURANCE AND VISA GETTING MEDICAL AND TRAVEL INSURANCE All international students who are studying a Unitec programme that is two weeks or more in duration are required to have medical and travel insurance that is Unitec approved. The insurance needs to cover travel to and from New Zealand, and the complete enrolment period, until the expiry of your student visa. This means your insurance should begin from the day you depart your home country until your final visa expiry date. There are two options:
UNITEC PLACED SOUTHERN CROSS INTERNATIONAL STUDENT TRAVEL INSURANCE (SCTI) All Unitec placed insurance will be with Southern Cross Travel Insurance. You’ll need to complete and sign the SCTI Insurance Application Form and email to International Student Support Services.
7
ARRANGE YOUR OWN INSURANCE If you have insurance with an alternative provider, it must be approved by Unitec, and emailed to insurance@unitec. ac.nz by the first day of the month your programme begins. The coverage must be effective from the date of your flight to New Zealand (please send us a copy of your air ticket and student visa) and cover up to the last day of your study visa. Unitec will review your coverage to confirm it complies with the Code of Practice. If not provided by the cut-off date, Unitec will arrange insurance for you.

For further information regarding insurance requirements while studying at Unitec, email insurance@unitec.ac.nz or visit unitec.ac.nz
YOUR VISA REQUIREMENTS
As an international student, it’s your primary responsibility to hold an appropriate visa to maintain the lawful status to study and live in New Zealand. It’s important you apply for your student visa as soon as possible, as the application process can take 1-2 months due to Covid-19. Once you have a valid student visa to study in New Zealand, you’ll need to upload a copy to your Enrolment Portal. If you don’t have a valid student visa, or don’t upload one, you won’t be able to study at Unitec. New Zealand Immigration require Unitec to comply with their rules and report on students failing to provide the above. For more information on student visas, contact our Visa team by sending an email to studentvisa@unitec.ac.nz. In some cases, you may need to speak with Immigration NZ directly.

MĀORI SUCCESS
ANGITU MĀORI
Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini. My success is not of my own making but the making of many.
TE NOHO KOTAHITANGA Te Noho Kotahitanga is our partnership between Māori and non- Māori – and it’s at the core of everything we do. Using the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi), Te Noho Kotahitanga is made up of five principles that help guide how staff and students engage with one another, with Māori knowledge, and how they behave in our local communities. This means you can expect to learn and experience New Zealand in an environment that respects and promotes tangata whenua (people of the land), and the valuable knowledge they hold and share. Our marae is also named Te Noho Kotahitanga because it is a living, breathing reflection of our commitment to the success of all students – and it sits at the heart of our Mt Albert campus. It’s a place full of learning opportunities – and connects us all together.
11
NGĀKAU MĀHAKI This is your entry point to Unitec – where you’ll officially be welcomed alongside other new staff and students with a traditional pōhiri. Our kaikaranga (woman caller) warmly welcomes you to this whenua (land) and starts to connect you to the rich history associated with these lands. Our kaikōrero (male speaker) continues to connect you to the people and the spaces that will provide safe havens during your journey with us, all the while providing assurance that we’re deeply committed to supporting your success. Your journey has begun - you’re now a part of the Unitec whanau (family) and this is your marae.
KURA PŌ – LEARN TE REO MĀORI AT NIGHT To add to your kete (basket) of knowledge, learn more about the language that has shaped Aotearoa New Zealand’s society, and is an integral part of our contemporary lifestyle – Te Reo Māori. There free night classes introduce you to Te Reo Māori from beginner level through to full immersion. You’ll be taught by some of the best lecturers, guided by authentic tikanga Māori protocols, and you’ll get to explore the beautiful Te Noho Kotahitanga marae and wharekai - hubs for teaching and learning, places for ceremonial and celebratory gatherings, and a source of local and historical knowledge.
Q&A WITH
TONI VAUGHAN DIRECTOR OF MĀORI SUCCESS Ko Pukenui-o-Raho te maunga Ko Waiotahe te awa Ko Maromahue te marae Ko Te Upokorehe te hapū Ko Te Whakatōhea te iwi Ko Toni Vaughan ahau
What’s your role at Unitec? While there are many facets to the role of Director - Māori Success, “manaakitia te rito” guides our practice. When you join us, you become a part of our pā harakeke. You, our learners are the rito and it is our responsibility to ensure you thrive in this environment.
Favourite place on campus? Puukenga is where you'll find me when I’m not running between meetings. Puukenga is the tuakana of the buildings at the marae, so when I'm there, I can’t help but be reminded of the legacy left by those who occupied the whare in the past - and my responsibility to continue that legacy.
How do I balance study, work and life? As a student myself, (I'm studying a post-graduate qualification), I understand the demands of work, study and whānau. Here are my biggest takeaways: 1. Create study groups – to keep each other motivated. 2. Keep your whānau in the loop – share your learnings and let them know how they can help you succeed. 3. Keep in contact with your friends as much as possible – they'll keep you sane. 4. If you need help with anything at all – please, please, please reach out to us.
Where to go for help Our marae whānau are here for you – call in to Puukenga, Ngākau Māhaki or Manaaki for a kōrero and a cuppa with our friendly whānau. We’ll walk alongside you from the start, to the end of your educational journey with us – Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini.

CIRCUS MEETS THEATRE
Our classroom is a circus theatre. If you love both theatre and circus, then you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how the two elements can be combined to form a social experience of circus theatre. Melissa Cameron is a Master of Creative Practice student who recently directed and performed in a show that hybridized these two creative elements, to showcase the nature of this new up-and-coming circus theatre industry. According to Melissa, the concept of ‘circus’, with clowns taking centre stage, is no longer the number one drawcard; instead, it has evolved into something much more enticing. “I was really interested in creating a piece of art that would bring joy to people, and help bring them together.” The production, ‘Get That Circus Out of my Lion’, not only spoke to socio-political themes in both Aotearoa and around the world, it also allowed people to walk out feeling refreshed and invigorated by experiencing something artistic and entertaining. Melissa and her classmates were tasked to take what they’d learned in the classroom and create something that would be interesting and reflective of a practical learning environment. With lecturers, looking into arts-based research and adapting the practical learnings according to what students were interested in, and wanted to learn more about, students were introduced to a broad scope of creative arts disciplines. “The experience I’ve had learning about the different disciplines in class has honestly just been incredible. The teachers care so much and are truly world-class in what they do, and the pastoral support I received was so special.” Because Aotearoa’s circus industry is blossoming, Melissa chose to research contemporary circus and acting to understand how these two disciplines might combine to form visual storytelling.

HOW OLIVER CAIN IS MAKING HIS MARK
Take every opportunity. Connect with people in your industry. Push yourself. If there was a formula for success for those breaking into the art world, this could be it – and it’s worked for Bachelor of Creative Enterprise (BCE) student Oliver Cain, who’s enjoyed impressive success even before graduating. Cain accumulated a number of awards in his final year at Unitec. He won the ECC Supreme Award and the Tuatara Ceramics Award at the ECC NZ Student Craft/Design Awards for his work Banana Bowls. He also became the first Unitec student to win the Eden Arts Art Schools Award, a competition that attracts students from Elam, MIT, Unitec, AUT and Whitecliffe, with his work Communal Conversation & Chewed Nipples. Other achievements include exhibiting at the biennial Sculpture on Shore exhibition (2018), and being a finalist in the Wallace Art Awards (2018 and 2019). “I’ve always entered and exhibited work through competitions,” he said. “I’d definitely recommend to people to enter anything they can and pursue contacts with people, because in the art world, it’s all about who you know. If you don’t talk to people, you won’t get anywhere very quickly.” Much of Cain’s work focuses on his experiences and those of the queer community, lightheartedly questioning social constructs of shame, anonymity and sexuality. He pairs items such as urinals and toilet cisterns with bananas, and uses pared-back materials to add a more textured look to his work. “Lots of my work is white, very simple and clean. I don’t like much to distract from the work. The white also references public spaces such as toilets, and the related presence of porcelain, and some of it links to public sexual experiences and cruising culture,” said Cain.

TEACHING IS IN THE BLOOD
For Ngāpuhi descendants, sibling duo Greg and Imogen Van Kan, teaching tamariki (children) is in their blood. With several family members already working in early childhood education, it’s no surprise the pair have ended up studying to become certified teachers – albeit at different times and for different reasons. Greg says he’s had at least 20 different jobs in his life – “I’ve done pretty much every trade, worked at every fast food restaurant, worked in hotels, bars, even printing” – and hasn’t liked any of them. When his partner challenged him to think about what he’d really like to do, he thought why not get paid to “hang out” with the people he enjoys most. And, coincidentally, his sister had just started studying the same thing. Imogen is in her final year, with Greg one year behind her. When they decided to pursue a career in early childhood education, it was important to them they found somewhere to study with the level of work experience they were after. “I don’t think I could get through this course without having the two days a week in a centre,” says Imogen. “There’s so much more that goes into the development of children than I ever expected. Being a visual person, it’s so much easier for me to learn something in class and then see it while working.”

ENGINEERING A BETTER FUTURE
Kevin Manalo was a mechanical engineer in aviation for almost 10 years until the global financial crisis of 2008. With work being outsourced overseas, stable work and income was scarce for many, including Kevin who had a family to support. It was time for a change. Kevin, 35, is a third-year student at Unitec, studying a Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Civil) part-time while raising a family and working full-time at civil engineering solution firm Pipeline & Civil. During the day, his classroom is a construction site, providing construction solutions for water projects across Auckland. Kevin says the integration of theoretical and practical learning that Unitec offers has enabled him to contribute immediately to his workplace. “There was a building boom around 2011, so I decided it was time to pursue a career that would allow me to change the world for the better – civil engineering is my way of doing that.” “There’s certain dynamic factors involved with civil engineering that just can’t be taught on paper. When you’re looking at a drawing from an aerial view, you can’t see or feel what the terrain is like, for example, the extent of vegetation for removal, whether wildlife needs relocating, how you’ll need to manage sediment erosion and traffic control. It’s that kind of stuff you can’t adapt to without being onsite.” Kevin explains that the world of civil engineering operates on three different levels; client, consultant and construction. Clients are usually government agencies or large-scale property developers, consultants design solutions for clients, and construction deals with building the designs of consultants. Each plays its own part in this ecosystem, but Kevin says by exposing you to all aspects of civil engineering, Unitec prepares you for the realities of the industry and supports you to become a more well-rounded civil engineer.

MY CLASSROOM IS A WEST-AUCKLAND SOCIAL SERVICE
Making the decision to become a qualified social worker has done more than just prepare Leastra Davis for a rewarding career – it’s helped her leave a physically and emotionally abusive relationship. Leastra is in her fourth and final year at Unitec, studying a Bachelor of Social Practice full-time, while also working part-time at Te Atatū-based social service Tū Wahine Trust, and raising her five children solo. Tū Wahine Trust is a kaupapa Māori counselling, therapy and support service for survivors of sexual harm and violence within whānau. The Trust works with people who have been referred by the New Zealand Police to set-up a support programme. Leastra is one of the first people whānau speak with once they’ve been referred. Work placements at organisations like Tū Wahine have been an integral part of Leastra’s studies and have helped her become a more confident social worker. “There are skills you learn from a work placement you just can’t get from sitting inside a classroom. For example, learning to build trust and practice compassion with the people you’re supporting can only be learned through experience.” Leastra says that, for her, social work is about taking proactive action, and connecting people with the services and resources they’re entitled to, to improve their lives. “One of the projects I’ve worked on is creating resources our Tū Wahine counsellors can give to our whānau when they need additional support.” Leastra says a lot of people take up social work because they’ve experienced some form of trauma in their lives that prompts them to want to support others in similar situations.
