Sick of turkey yet? Here’s some food for thought, a dozen facts about the festive foods, sights and traditions of the season in Korea.
It’s a day off!
Just like in the UK, Christmas Day itself is a public holiday. Korea is the only Asian country to observe this holiday, but it’s back to usual on Boxing Day. For Brits, Christmas is definitely a family affair. But for Koreans, it’s known better as a romantic date day, much like Valentine’s Day.
The traditional turkey and trimmings is hard to track down in Korea, though many go out to eat instead of cooking at home. Christmas Cake is popular, but it’s not the fruit and marzipan affair you may imagine. The major bakery chain Paris Baguette usually whips up a reasonably-priced range of cakes.
Stuff the turkey, . bring on the cake
In Korea, you can expect to see decorations only in the main city thoroughfares. Inspired by London and New York in recent years, Seoul decks out department stores with lights and huge Christmas trees. Shinsagae, akin to Harrods, goes all out with its lights, and Seoul City Hall has an ice skating rink.
Deck the halls
I’m dreaming of a white Christmas
Make it a date
Santa Claus is coming to town Santa exists in Korea, but he’s known there as ‘Santa Haraboji’, a friendly grandfather who delivers gifts to children. Whether in red, blue, or traditional hanbok, just as in the UK you’re likely to find him in a department store meeting children.
All I want for Christmas is ... You’ll hear Mariah Carey in Korea too, but there’s also a plethora of Kpop releases in the festive season. Many regular music shows air a Christmas special, with elf costumes and tinsel aplenty.
If you’ve ever dreamed of waking up to a proper snow-laden scene at Christmas, Korea is a great place to go. It snows heavily around the country in December, as temperatures regularly fall below zero. Of course that means you could spend Christmas Day just like in the movies, building snowmen and sledding!
UNITEDKPOP EMAG XMAS 2014
Socks again? You shouldn’t have ...
In Korea if gifts are given it is usually only to children, and then you can still forget that santa sack under the tree. This means there’s no mad rush to the shops on Christmas Eve. Though winter sales do start pretty early in December.
Amen to that!
While still a Buddhist country, around 30% of Koreans are Christian. The illuminated crosses of Seoul’s churches are easy to spot, and are decorated even more brightly at Christmastime. Just as in the UK, many people will go to a church service at Christmas regardless of their religion.
With every Christmas card I write
Instead of ‘Merry Christmas’, cards in Korea often say ‘Season’s Greetings and ‘Best Wishes for the New Year.’ Santa and snow-capped houses aren’t very common designs; expect to find illustrations of people in hanbok, playing traditional Korean games and instruments instead.
Get Outdoors!
Whether with the family, friends or a sweetheart on Christmas Day, Koreans don’t tend to linger indoors. The most popular places to head are amusement parks. Lotte World, Everland and Seoul Land all hold parades and music shows, and Everland’s Santa Penguin Parade even includes real penguins.
One Christmas tree in South Korea made global news earlier this year, as it lies close to the North-South border. The 60ft tree, made of steel, was illuminated every year in December, and could possibly be seen in the North. The tree was dismantled this year, apparently due to structural safety concerns.

kdong Musician (commonly referred to as AKMU) are a duo made up of a brother and sister – 18 year old Lee Changhyuk and 15 year old Lee Suhyun. Many will know of the two from their participation in, a subsequent winning of the second series of SBS talent show K-Pop Star. However, before this, the two worked briefly under a company called the Proteurment Agency, and even released a song entitled Galaxy. Nevertheless, the two were striving for more, and their time as contestants on the talent show series earned them a lot of praise from the Big Three judges. The pair showed their talent and versatility as the covered a range of songs from different genres and performed a selfwritten track called Don’t Cross Your Legs among many others. Of course, the two were also given constructive criticism throughout their stages, with the judges mainly citing their lack of confidence as one of the things they needed to work on in order to improve in the future. A lack of confidence did not hold them back from achieving victory though of course, and shortly after winning the programme, the siblings were snapped up by YG Entertainment. Their fresh
and often stripped back style served as something quite unusual and refreshing compared to the usually heavy hip-hop styles that come from other YG artists. Since signing to YG Entertainment, Akdong Musician have released a debut album (entitled PLAY), with 4 singles. Tracks from said album have had over 4 million downloads in total and have captured many hearts with the impressive vocals and great sense of creativity featured. Even though they often have a quite soft and gentle image, they are able to maintain more modern elements in their songs. Changhyuk often raps a verse or two within a piece otherwise full of harmonic vocals. However, everything coalesces effortlessly and still achieves that smooth sound. Suhyun has also recently formed a sub-unit with her label mate and SBS K-pop Star Season 1 contestant Lee Hi. This has shown a more grown up and edgy side to the young girls. You will love Akdong Musician if you are a fan of more acoustic sounds and often enjoy softer songs. Don’t write this group off too quickly if this is not your cup of tea though, as their aforementioned versatility allows for quite a few surprising sounds.

Let’s face it, who wants to wait for English subs and translations? Get your friends a head start on learning Korean with a hangul handwriting practise book! Hangul is the writing system used in Korea, and despite how intimidating it looks, it’s possible to learn to read and write the whole alphabet in just one hour! Even for those who aren’t up for learning the language, understanding how to read hangul alone can help tremendously when visiting Korea, using Korean sites or even trying to understand song/drama titles! Besides, this is a skill that looks mighty impressive to others. We are now lucky enough to have a few places dotted around London to buy your K-pop gifts from, a top hit being H-Mart in New Malden! H-Mart is well known for their reasonable prices, and their large range of products from cosmetics to merchandise to food! You will sometimes see a H-Mart stall in some Korean related events – they were
also at the KBS World Festival in London! The customer service provided at H-Mart is brilliant, and they even hold concert ticket giveaways online. The reviews from customers shopping at H-Mart are all at 5 stars, commenting on how kind and welcoming the staff are. If don’t live near New Malden, you can go online to our top recommendation KpopMart and do your Christmas shopping there! There’s always the risks of ordering online, and the disadvantages due to postage fees and miscommunications, so be sure to choose a trusted seller which has good reviews before purchasing anything from them.

Holly
Okay, so this is a cover of a Western song, but I personally prefer it to the original! It gives me the feeling of going to events around Christmas and really allowing yourself to get in a festive mood. Christmas is a time where you can really let your hair down and indulge in food and drink with loved ones without feeling guilty. Those happy and warm feelings come to me when I see this performance. Despite the fact that 2PM look a little awkward, seemingly aching to move around a bit more instead of dance on the spot and Taecyeon’s microphone malfunction, this performance looks like a really nice Christmas moment shared between the idols and their audience. 2PM - Last Christmas

I’m not overly into christmas songs, though I can’t resist watching the fancams from Son Ho Young’s Christmas Party Concert each year, particularly the ones of him singing western Christmas classics. Slightly deviating from the Christmas theme, towards New Year, I absolutely love Happy Brand New Year, the 2012 family project from BrandNew Music. BrandNew Project - Happy Brand New Year
Maisie
I love both Bom and Lee Hi’s voices, they covered the song well and put their own twist on it. I also like how the video is quite dark, but still let’s each of their quirky personality’s shine through. Bom&Hi - All I Want For Christmas
St eph
Though the song was realeased in April and doesn’t have any Christmas lyrics, you can’t help but get a cosy, winter-like vibe from it. Definitely a song to listen to while bundled up with a cup of cocoa! Eddy Kim - The Manual
T ing
While this is definitely a sad song and fitting for the lonely-hearted or broken-hearted who want to console themselves during the winter time, Miracles In December is sung with emotion and depth that really shows what EXO’s vocal line can do. EXO - Miracles In December

CHRISTMAS IN AUGUST
W
hen considering which Korean films would be suitable as recommendations for Christmas, the first film that sprung into my head was ‘Christmas in August’, purely because of the title. Moments later, I dismissed the film, deeming it the opposite of a typically cheesy, snowy, winter-set Christmas film. However, I realised that ‘Christmas in August’ is actually one of my favourite films to watch at this time of year, regardless of the lack of gaudy wrapping paper. It isn’t even set in winter. The film takes place mostly throughout the summer, as you may have guessed from the title. There are Christmas themes though - the story is about spending time with people you love and appreciating them. It’s rather slow-moving and focuses on character development rather than action. However, we see a beautiful friendship and bond blossom, though it is tinged with melancholia which gives the film depth and substance.
UKP MAG XMAS 2014 // page x
‘Christmas in August’ (dir. Jin-ho Hur, 1998) tells the story of a photo-shop owner who is living his last days in the knowledge that he is terminally ill. A young woman who works as a meter maid frequents his shop often to print her photos of illegally parked cars. The love we see develop between these two characters is delicate and selfless, despite the quiet sense of impending tragedy due to the illness of the protagonist. But he is the ultimate definition of selflessness. He knows he is seriously ill but he keeps this from the other people in his life. Christmas in August’ is a film about love, but it is not a rom-com and it is not a melodrama. This film has a sad and lovely tone, but it is a rewarding and warming watch - it is the perfect Christmas film.
UNITEDKPOP EMAG XMAS 2014
“THIS FILM IS A BRILLIANT CHOICE TO WATCH WITH THE FAMILY.”
ONE FINE SPRING DAY Hur Jin-ho’s ‘One Fine Spring Day’ relies just as little on excessive dialogue and passionate bursts of emotion as ‘Christmas in August’. This film focuses on two characters similar to those in ‘Christmas in August’ but the story is by no means the same, and it stars Lee Young-Ae and Yu Ji-Tae. Due to these films being made by the same director, they have distinct similarities regarding style and execution but they both tell separate, beautiful stories. ‘One Fine Spring Day’ concerns itself with the interactions between a sound engineer and a radio host who meet to record the sound of wind in a bamboo forest – you can imagine that this film is not only visually beautiful but audibly stunning, too. The quiet pace and elegant narrative make this another perfect film for a lazy Christmas afternoon, not to mention that it provides a refreshing and relaxing break from the overbearing red and green monstrosities that saturate the film channels over the Christmas period.
MY SASSY GIRL If something more upbeat is what you’re looking for, you might want to try the classic Korean rom-com, ‘My Sassy Girl’ from Kwak Jae-Young. This heart-warming, witty romance stars Jun Ji-Hyun and Cha TaeHyun and tells the farcical tale of a college student and his progressing relationship with his somewhat unhinged girlfriend. Delicate scenes of first realisations and confessions of love are paralleled by edgy one-liners and spectacular comic performances. This film is a brilliant choice to watch with family because the double-edged nature of the film provides something for those who like the romance genre, but it doesn’t get so bogged down in it that it becomes too sentimental and ‘dreary’ for those who don’t. Plus, the fast pace and comic story will keep everyone hooked and amused!

UNITEDKPOP EMAG XMAS 2014
During the morning of the 27th of April this year, word quickly spread throughout social networking sites that some fans had been waiting outside Brixton Academy as early as 4AM in order to secure a good spot in the standing sections. Fast forward to around 5:30PM and the large line of fans was stretching along two sides of the building. Fans chatted excitedly, some eating fast food, some playing B.A.P tracks from their phones to get themselves ready for the event ahead. The doors opened at 7PM as planned. The singlular, large official goods stand became overcrowed in a heartbeat and many began queuing to collect their pre-ordered ‘First Sensibility’ albums at the nearby table. Fans ripped open the packaging, some screamed in delight and jumped around whilst others exhaled disappointedly after the breath they held in anticipation was released. Only one hundred albums had that prized golden ticket to the Hi-Five event. The concert hall filled slowly, and lime green Matoki light sticks illuminated the smoky atmosphere. Time ticked by and fans became a little impatient as 8PM approached, chants of “B.A.P! B.A.P! B.A.P!” began, repeatedly fading and picking up volume again. Finally, the main screen switched on, and fans were shown what appeared to be a news coverage of a UFO sighting. Fans became louder as they screamed in anticipation. The video footage became static and the signal was interrupted - B.A.P had come to Earth! As fans will know, teaser posters were released in anticipation of the LOE Tour. Each member’s photo included the sentence: “EARTH NEEDS [ ]” and fans were encouraged to guess what the missing words were. It was slowly revealed, in fact, that these words are: Justice, Love, Passion, Emotion, Happiness and You. The concert set list followed this theme.
UNITEDKPOP EMAG XMAS 2014
B.A.P performed each song with near perfect choreography and vocals, continuing without even talking until just before performing ‘Coffee Shop’. The boys expressed that they needed a little break after such a powerful opening, a special B.A.P coffee stand was wheeled out and everyone sipped coffees whilst dabbing themselves with towels. Some lucky fans standing near the front of the stage were given some cups of coffee and orange juice from a few of the members, before they continued on with a spectacular show. The member’s English during the talks was not the clearest, as they did not have the luxury of a translator as Super Junior did during their London stop. However, the members tried hard and fans were able to feel very connected despite that slight communication barrier. Towards the end of the concert, the members mentioned how very grateful they are for all the support they receive from UK fans and how much they love London. Yong Guk said that it was his dream to perform there and the members’ sincerity in their words was very much apparent. The boys then ended the night with a performance of their debut song ‘Warrior’.

UNITEDKPOP EMAG XMAS 2014
In this review, we’re recounting U-KISS’ London concert this year, held at The Forum in London. The concert both impressed and amazed the audience, and here’s why.
UK and European KissMe’s were in for a treat as 7-member group U-Kiss made their way to London for their first ever European tour. Stopping by Moscow, London and Paris, U-Kiss “Scandal in Europe” had fans line up outside The Forum, Kentish Town this last month, some queuing up as early as 2AM to see their favourite idols. Starting at 7pm, U-Kiss kept their audience entertained for almost two hours, with a classic mixture of their old hits and newer songs from their latest album. After the show, an exclusive meet & greet session was held, where group photos were taken with fans and members together. The members were happy to hug and hold their fans, though due to the rush not a lot of chatting was done. None the less, fans who attended the Meet and Greet can now find the photos on Azia Event’s Facebook Page. The concert started out from a high note with the 6 currently active members performing their latest single “Don’t Flirt”, following up with “Standing Still” before introducing themselves. Throughout the concert, Kevin and Eli acted as MC’s, communicating with the fans in fluent English – a rare treat for any k-pop concert. The two of them translated for the rest of the members who also tried their best to speak for themselves on occasion.
Through the years U-Kiss has faced many struggles through several crucial changes in image as well as members. With only half of the original members remaining in the current line-up, one might fear a half-hearted performance, but the group appears to be stronger than ever and ready to conquer the world with their strong variety in vocals, dance and rap. Speaking as someone who was lucky enough to be seeing the group a few years back, their image is as strong as ever, and the members all seem to be comfortable enough around each other, teasing and having a laugh on stage to take some pressure off.
UNITEDKPOP EMAG XMAS 2014
After some chatting, U-kiss kept the concert going with a few of their slower songs and ballads, including fan favourite “0330” and a personal favourite of mine, “Someday”. Some would say that U-Kiss might do well in going back to a ballad concept once more for their promotions. They have a number of strong vocals with Kevin and Soohyun especially shining bright in their respective lines, and being very well supported by Hoon and most recent addition to the group, Jun. The fresh maknae deserves a mention for himself, surprising me and, it would seem many other fans, with his performance. A talented rapper, he also showcased an impressive range of vocals and dance abilities. Judging from the crowd, the new maknae is a fan favourite on the rise and certainly a valuable addition to the group in every way. A highlight for many and especially one lucky fan was the surprise performance of “Mysterious Lady” where a random fan was chosen from the audience and brought up on stage to be serenated by not one but 6 charming members at once. Hoon gifted his jacket and Soohyun got on his knees to sing his lines along with the rest of the members fighting for attention in various ways. Kevin being his regular self is a big cheeseball, but his fans don’t mind at all, and he rightfully keeps going strong, no matter how much his members tease. The girls in front will swoon and his fans all love him for his quirky yet adorable stage presence. He happily expressed his heartfelt gratitude in seeing the fans cry at their ballads which obviously have meant a great deal to many.
All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable and fun concert with a group who are not giving up despite many hardships and who are being paid back in generous manners of love and affection by their fans who have waited to see them for years and were not disappointed. The members spared no expense in expressing their love for London and their fans here. Hoon stated he would like to come back and go on dates here with his fans, and Soohyun never knew London KissMe’s were so beautiful, promising they would return as soon as possible. They all even picked up some “slang” from the audience and impressed with their pronounciation of “Going to the Loo” among others. Finishing off their main segment with a row of dance tracks, U-Kiss managed to bring the atmosphere back up easily with several upbeat songs, especially lifting the roof with Neverland, an obvious fan favourite for everyone present, singing along with the entire song. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable and fun concert with a group who are not giving up despite many hardships and who are being paid back in generous manners of love and affection by their fans who have waited to see them for years and were not disappointed. Well done, U-kiss. By Mai Vabo

AT THE LONDON KOREAN FILM FESTIVAL By Mai Vabo
L
ondon Film Festival audiences were lucky enough to experience a short concert and appearance by none other than Super Duo Donghae and Eunhyuk from Super Junior. The two performed some of their most popular songs for a full audience of fans, and held a Q&A for Donghae’s role in the new film “The Youth Project”, which was also shown at the Odeon West End where the event took place. Read our review of “The Youth Project” Donghae and Eunhyuk were clearly enjoying the show and spending time with their UK fans, as they were joking around on stage and even tried their hand at some English phrases and words to the crowds immense joy, even if, as Eunhyuk started the concert by pointing out: “My English is very… not good”.
At one point, the Duo also seemed to become slightly miffed by the amount of cameras in the Audience, as they asked their fans to put their phones and cameras away and “simply enjoy the show!” Obvious highlights from the appearance seemed to be Donghae’s promise that they would return to Londno and the UK later with more songs, the duo’s profession that the audience were their girlfriends, as well as a mention of Super Show, which seems to be on the cards for London.
UNITEDKPOP EMAG XMAS 2014
As for their performance, a crowd favourite was their ending stage with Oppa Oppa, their debut song as a unit, which had fans singing along enthusiastically. Another favourite was, not surprisingly, their beautiful performance of Still You, of which the MV was even filmed in London.
Despite some broken English and a few awkward moments, the concert and screening was a huge success, and the Q&A afterwards was very interesting as Donghae seems to have impressed with his acting performance.
