ASTRO WORKS WITH THE HUB AND ERIK LIDBOM FOR “GATEWAY” ASTRO has returned with their seventh mini-album, “Gateway”, which includes the work of European producers! The group’s title track for the album, “Knock”, is written and produced by THE HUB. Despite being a Korean-based producer collective, the songwriters credited for the song (Charlotte Wilson, Rajan Muse, Frankie Day, Noerio, AyU and Chanti) are based in Europe.
BTS’S “MAP OF THE SOUL: 7” GOES SILVER IN THE UK BTS’s latest album, “Map of the Soul: 7” is certified silver in the UK! On 1st May, the BRIT Awards announced the news via social media. In the UK, albums must reach 60,000 units in sales to reach a silver certification. “Map of the Soul: 7” was released on 21st February 2020. As well as sweeping the country’s iTunes Top 100, it became the group’s second chart-topping album in the UK.
This is not THE HUB’s first Kpop writing credit. In March, the producer collective worked on Kang Daniel’s “Jealous”. UK-based songwriter Charlotte Wilson previously worked with The Boyz on “Bloom Bloom”. Also, Amsterdam-based producer Rajan Muse wrote TWICE’s “Breakthrough” and NCT 127’s “Kitchen Beat”. As well as this, Swedish producer Erik Lidbom produced ASTRO’s fourth song, “We Still”. Lidbom is no stranger to the Kpop industry, having worked with SF9, NCT 127, SHINee, Girls Generation and BoA.

MONSTA X WORKS WITH WILLIE WEEKS AND OLLIPOP FOR “FANTASIA X” MONSTA X has enlisted the help of European composers for their upcoming album, “FANTASIA X”. The album’s most notable credit is Willie Weeks. Having worked on the group’s previous title track, “Follow”, he is back with two album credits for “Fantasia” and “It Ain’t Over”. The British producer is no stranger to Starship Entertainment. Last month, it was announced that he participated in the composition for Cravity’s debut album, “Hideout: Remember Who We Are”. Also credited for the composition of “Fantasia” is OLLIPOP. The Swedish producer has an extensive kpop discography, having worked with artists such as Red Velvet, LOONA, WJSN and VIXX.
MONSTA X is gearing up for a comeback on 26th May. This will be the group’s first album as six members, after rumours led to Wonho’s departure in October 2019. As well as releasing the tracklist for “FANTASIA X”, the group has released trailers hinting the theme of their comeback.

ON FEBRUARY 28TH SUPERM BROUGHT THEIR WE ARE THE FUTURE TOUR TO THE O2 ARENA, LONDON. The atmosphere inside the O2 was electrifying as fans eagerly awaited the performance. Light began to illuminate the arena in an array of colours; a mixture of the new SuperM lightstick along with the official lightsticks from the respective groups within this recently formed SM Entertainment fusion. Working as an “Avengers” type scenario by gathering idols from different groups to create music and perform collectively, they’ve effectively united the different fandoms under SM Entertainment. The selection of different colours brightening up the arena created a rainbow which connected fans who were all here for the same reason, and when the lights began to dim – accompanied by the deafening cheers from the audience – created a fan unity. Before the show officially began, the excitement of the crowd exploded into new heights when ‘Jopping’ boomed through the speakers – you could physically feel the music beating through your chest as the audience raced to their feet. The leg room was small and the distance between each chair on the floor seating had you practically hip to hip with one another. This didn’t discourage the enthusiastic crowd from letting loose however, as fans were singing at the top of their lungs while they danced and jumped around with what space they had available to them! With the crowd successfully hyped, the group finally made their big entrance. The screams from the audience amplified the intense and heavy drumbeat that starts ‘I Can’t Stand the Rain’ – the perfect opener for the current rainy London streets. The choreography was especially powerful and intricate, although this was soon interrupted by some technical issues! The lights and sound suddenly cut off and you could see the shock clearly on vocalist Baekhyun’s face, who was the focal point on the big screens as he was about to build up the track towards its climax. The group handled this professionally by reassuring fans that they would be back momentarily, but before they could go backstage the beginning of ‘I Can’t Stand the Rain’ echoed throughout the arena once again. The fans were more than happy to experience this commanding performance a second time while Baekhyun blew everyone away with his breath-taking high notes. Everyone in the crowd felt incredibly lucky to witness this masterpiece again, with members mentioning several times throughout the night that London is the only place blessed with listening to this song twice!
SuperM currently have five officially released songs as a group on their EP. Following the (two) opener(s), SuperM filled their set list with solo and unit stages while also incorporating unreleased tracks. This did mean the seven members were not on stage together as often as I would have liked considering this was intended as a group tour, but this was to be expected as their discography as a group is still limited. Despite this, they succeeded in filling the 18 song setlist perfectly. The enthusiasm from the fans was just as strong for songs they had not heard before to the tracks they were more familiar with. The first to perform their solo stage was Taemin, presenting his iconic 2014 hit ‘Danger’. This was beautifully intermixed with elements from SHINee’s ‘Sherlock’ which complemented and refreshed the track, leaving SHINee fans feeling all the feelings! His stage presence was mesmerising by looking suave while donning a fedora hat and commanding attention. Directly following was the Korean version of ‘Goodbye’. The whole
set up was gorgeous; a thin fog filled the stage, the backdrop displayed falling petals and the stunning lighting along with Taemin’s hypnotic vocals created a dreamy atmosphere inside the arena. Taemin threw his whole body into his movements, really showcasing his spectacular dancing and capabilities as a performer, wrapping the whole audience around his finger as we all forgot how to breathe. Taeyong was next to take the stage for his solo performance, completely changing the previous tone with his unreleased track ‘GTA’ (Grand Trouble Artist). Arriving on stage decked out in a glittering mask while the arena illuminates in a red. Taeyong’s performance was fierce, intense and unforgettable, showcasing his individual style as he moved across the stage delivering his rap with perfect flow and charisma. Taeyong left the audience feeling hyped and more than ready for when his solo stage transitioned into another original SuperM song ‘Super Car’ which included more perfectly synchronized choreography.
Once ready for his solo stage, introduced by Mark as his “best numbered friend”, Ten returned to the stage dressed in an angelic white ensemble as he first performs ‘Dream in a Dream’. The contemporary-esque choreography was beautifully captivating and the whole performance was dripping with emotion. Ten moved gracefully as the music blended into ‘New Heroes’, showing his abilities as a strong performer with confident vocals that had a delicate and natural quality that was simply charming. When it was time for Lucas’ solo stage he completely shifted the tone into a playful and fun atmosphere. Performing the unreleased, full English track ‘Bass Go Boom’ the whole audience was dancing and feeling the energy from Lucas’ addictive and contagious smile and carefree aura. The stage was vibrant as the song was paired perfectly with the colourful screen displaying videos of Lucas dancing and singing to the track with a 90’s vibe visual. Jumping straight into another solo stage, Baekhyun reeled us in with two tracks from his popular EP City Lights, ‘Betcha’ and ‘UN Village’. Baekhyun held himself with confidence during both performances, vibing on stage with a level of cool and collectiveness one can only dream of achieving! Starting off UN Village behind a microphone stand, feeling the beat and sharing with the audience his charismatic energy. His extensive vocal abilities were showcased the whole night but he especially
displayed this during his solo stage; his clear vocals carried through the music easily and effortlessly, like it was as easy as breathing, and perfectly balanced with the beat. The group finally resembled for the next stage, ‘Dangerous Women’ and ‘2 Fast’. Another unreleased song, Dangerous Women, was still well perceived by the fans, who although weren’t familiar with the track, didn’t shy away from their screams and dancing in the audience. So far into the night all 7 members had rarely been on the stage together, but when this happened they displayed powerful and perfectly executed choreography. What I loved most about this performance was getting to witness the member’s chemistry with one another and as a group, no choreography to follow, just the members joking around and being silly. There were a lot of hugs, smiles, laughs and interactions between the members during this song, which was a pleasure to watch as these are talented artists we are already familiar with who are quickly bonding together as a newly formed group. Fans are already used to seeing the dynamic between EXO’s Baekhyun and Kai or NCT members, so it was really fun to see the friendships between the members we aren’t as familiar with seeing. Taemin had a huge smile on his face the whole performance, looking ecstatic and carefree as he danced around with Ten and Mark. This might have felt misplaced to anyone else, the contrast of the members laughing and messing around during what sounded like
a serious and sensual song, but it was nice to see the members so natural without the constriction of choreographed moves. ‘2 Fast’ followed the same sensual sound but this time paired with the same performance vibe, precise and stirring movements and sultry vocals, creating an atmosphere to match – and no one was complaining! Dispersing further, the stage was cleared for Taeyong and Ten’s subunit stage, performing a duet of NCT U’s ‘Baby Don’t Stop’. The fans were absolutely delighted by eliciting the loudest fan chants and singing we had heard so far. The performance was rather seductive, mirroring the previous songs in this concert segment and the crowd was getting more and more enthusiastic. Mark was up next for his solo stage with his performance ‘Talk About’. Mark demonstrated his dynamic talent, executing perfect flow in this high energy rap track. The lights and unique video backdrop created an almost club like atmosphere, and with the crowd moving to the heavy addictive beat it was impossible to stand still! Mark had a truly striking stage presence and looked right at home on the O2 stage, a memorable and strong delivery. Kai concluded the solo stages with ‘Confession’. Gracing the stage with his abs on show under his jacket had the crowd losing it – if they thought they were just about holding it together, Kai sent them flying over the edge!
Red strobe lights, fierce beat and aggressive energy, Kai was on fire and dominated the stage, taking no prisoners! Everyone was ready to risk it all for Kai and confess their sins before that godly performance. The choreography was both fierce and seductive, fan chants of the singer’s name “Kim Jong-in” erupted from the crowd in time with the beat as the song came to an end. With the solo stages now concluded, it was time for the encore. All 7 members took to the stage once more to perform the popular track from their EP ‘No Manners’. With raised platforms incorporated into the choreography, SuperM gifted fans with the provocative performance with almost fan serviceesque dance moves. The group’s penultimate song, ‘With You’ – another unreleased track – completely changed the tone. The exciting and lively sound contrasted with the previous atmosphere created by No Manners. I’m surprised I didn’t leave the concert with whiplash with how quickly the members went from sensual and serious to silly and playful! The full English song sounded cheerful and positive, with the members all throwing colourful balls into the audience with their signatures on them for fans to fervently try and catch. Teasing and banter was further displayed to the fans, their smiles and laughs were addictive from the audience as their happiness radiated off of them. Every few songs there would be a break where members would talk to the crowd either as a 7 or while other members were preparing for their next stage. Although there was flitting between a translator and English to communicate with the fans, the frequent English between the members was another step they used to connect with their fans in London and felt incredibly genuine. The chemistry and friendship between the members was obvious as they often joked and teased with one another, embarrassing each other with aegyo. Kai even tried to leave the stage in a burst of embarrassment over his aegyo performance and Baekhyun worrying dramatically that we would no longer want to wait for him to return to London if he performed his aegyo in front of us! Mark even
attempted a cockney accent, greeting the audience with an “ello London” which had the crowd in stitches! These charming segments created an intimate and personal engagement with the audience; sharing little details of their time in London, Mark and Taeyong buying lots of clothes at Dover Street Market, Kai and Lucas enjoying the Tate Museum. It’s always nice for fans to hear their idols are enjoying their country and what they get up to while on tour. They all expressed how meaningful and special performing in London was to them, especially Kai who emphasised how it has been his dream to perform in London since his debut and he was happy to have finally achieved that dream. Taeyong also took a moment to thank the fans that couldn’t be at the concert for supporting them and for their love. Ten and Taemin were also very confident and talkative in these segments, however Lucas was much more shy and quiet – but that didn’t stop him from wearing the widest grin the whole concert! Before their final song, the members came together to take a picture with the arena (which we are still waiting for SM!!) The night certainly went 2 Fast and before anyone even realised, it was time for the final song. I knew it was coming, you knew it was coming; everyone knew it was coming yet nothing could prepare the crowd for the intensity of ‘Jopping’ performed live. The screams were deafening, the fans couldn’t jump high enough and the energy radiated from SuperM and the fans in perfect synchronisation. It was a flawless song to end the night with – I’m still riding on the adrenaline from that incredible performance and it has been over a month! With multiple hints and promises for more music releases, surprises from the group and the fans reactions to the unreleased songs performed, fans will hopefully be hearing from SuperM in the near future. If SuperM are the future, I am perfectly happy to live it in.
With the current situation that has been happening all around us at the moment it is important to stay positive and for a lot of people, music can bring a feeling of togetherness and can calm those feeling anxious during times of uncertainty. This may have been the most recent Kpop concert we had in the UK before everything changed, but remember it won’t be the last! Not when Kpop tours have finally put Europe on their map!! Keep listening to Kpop, reach out to someone if you are feeling lonely or anxious and look after yourselves! We will all meet each other at concerts again soon! As Mark stressed to the audience, “Most importantly, take care of yourselves, be healthy, we’ve got to see each other next time ok?”
The team here at UKP have been really intrigued by their work and I was excited to be able to break the album down and review it track-by-track. See my thoughts on it below:
TOP OF THE CHAIN I personally love really powerful songs and this one really got me hooked. The song itself is anthemic and was really empowering to listen to. The production quality is really high and the instrumentation matches the lyrics perfectly. The electric guitar adds that little bit of extra dramatic flair and really adds to the dynamic feel of the song. With lines such as ‘This song is revolutionary’ and ‘This is our anthem, this is our moment’ alongside the powerful instrumentation, it is clear that the production on this song has been really meticulous and detailoriented and it really pays off. This felt like a very strong statement on a debut album and it makes clear that CRAVITY are not afraid to be bold.
BREAK ALL THE RULES
ALBUM REVIEW BY CAITLIN HOLLOWAY
IT’S ALWAYS SO EXCITING TO LISTEN TO A DEBUT ALBUM. TO SEE AN ARTIST OR GROUP BURST ONTO THE SCENE WITH SO MUCH ENTHUSIASM AND SINCERITY IS ALWAYS SO INSPIRING. CRAVITY ARE A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF THIS. AS A NEW 9-MEMBER BOY GROUP WHO DEBUTED UNDER STARSHIP ENTERTAINMENT IN MIDAPRIL, I FELT AS THOUGH THIS EP WAS A WELCOME BREATH OF FRESH AIR DURING THE QUARANTINE. THEIR DEBUT EP ‘HIDEOUT: REMEMBER WHO WE ARE’ HAS SO MUCH CHARACTER AND IT WAS VERY CLEAR THAT THIS GROUP ARE DETERMINED TO MAKE THEIR MARK VERY EARLY ON IN THEIR CAREER. IT PRESENTS SOME REALLY DIVERSE TRACKS AND A HIGH LEVEL OF PRODUCTION VALUE THAT WAS REALLY REFRESHING TO SEE, PARTICULARLY FROM A DEBUT GROUP.
This is another track that is clearly intended to make a statement. The instrumentation is a bit more simple than on Top of the Chain, but for what it lacks on the backing track, it makes up for in lyrics. One that stuck out to me a lot is the lyric that translates to mean ‘We don’t even know that we’ve lost the light in our eyes, a dystopia that blooms in the darkness of the planet that got used to despair’. It was really refreshing to see such bold writing on the album, especially as this is the title track of the album.
JUMPER As this song was written for CRAVITY by Joohoney of MONSTA X, I was really excited to hear this one. First of all, this song is ridiculously catchy. It may not be the most complex song on the album, the lyrics and beat are fairly simple, but as a dance track it is a lot of fun. I can imagine this song being played in a club and really helping to bring up the energy. Not my favourite on the album, but even so, I’ve had it stuck in my head all day.
BLACKOUT This is another example of some really solid production on this album. I really enjoy the 8-bit style beat on the song, it’s so unique and really caught my attention. With
the constant references to games throughout the song, the 8-bit style worked perfectly and really highlighted the amount of attention to detail on the album. This song really showcases the range of different vocals and quirks of each of the members and really allowed each of them to have a moment to shine. Blackout is another song that really encapsulates the determination of the group and makes me want to hear more.
STAY This is the point in the album where the songs begin to slow down and mellow out a little bit. With a soft beat and smooth vocals, Stay has a really wistful feel to it that suits the meaning and lyrics of the song, being about a yearning for love. The lyrics can come across a little bit repetitive but otherwise, this is a really pleasant listen.
CLOUD 9 The title of this song fits the mood of this song very well. This is a really euphoric song about the joys of being together and empowering each other. Not only was this charming on its own, It was really heartwarming to hear whilst being in self isolation. That message of togetherness made me think about the people around me as we learn to cope and make the best of the situation we are all in. It really captures that uplifting moment where you feel like you could conquer the world as long as you were with the people you love.
STAR As the last song on the album, this one really hammered home the intention of this debut. This song is packed with lyrical complexity and has a genuine sincerity to it that made for an absolutely beautiful song. This track was a really charming conclusion to the album and it has definitely ensured that I will be sticking around to see what CRAVITY release in the future. Overall, this album really surprised me. As a debut EP, I was not expecting this level of craftsmanship and nuance and yet I have been proven to be completely wrong. ‘HIDEOUT: REMEMBER WHO WE ARE’ is a really admirable first step into the industry and, just like they have said in the title of the album, they have definitely made sure that I will remember who they are. I know that everyone here at UKP will definitely be excited to hear what they bring out next and we hope you will be too!
AS THE WEATHER TURNS WARMER, THE SOUND OF KPOP IS BEGINNING TO GET FRESHER AS WE SLOWLY HEAD INTO SUMMER. VETERAN GIRL GROUP, APINK, CAME BACK WITH THEIR 9TH MINI ALBUM, “LOOK”. THE RELEASE DATE OF APRIL 13TH BROUGHT ALONG A FIERCE, GIRL CRUSH IMAGE THAT THE GROUP HAVE BEEN SERVING FOR THE PAST THREE COMEBACKS. The change in appearance also brings a change in sound. The title track “Dumhdurum” is a fresh sound. In an interview with Star News, where the group talked about their latest comeback, Naeun expressed what kind of song she thought “Dumhdurum” was; It’s a very attractive choreographed song that has an addictive melody, I expressed my calm
mind through “Dumhdurum”. We have tried a new side. The song itself has an infectious synth sound that shows the point dance affectively. The girls sound fresh and their voices really shine in this new comeback, where they continue to show their new image. Though, if you’re missing the lovely and innocent sound of Apink, such as Mr Chu and Remember, you don’t have to look far. Their album, which comprises of seven tracks, shows off songs about being in love, falling out of love and loving yourself. Their track, “Yummy”, keeps that carefree, easy listening sound. Paired with their light, smooth and sexy vocals, it creates an atmosphere
perfect for spring. This is simply a song about wanting to receive a sweet love from your lover, but it is so unmistakeably Apink. This album gives us unit tracks. The first being from ’JuJiRong’ (Namjoo, Eunji and Chorong). With “Be Myself”, we experience a message of having self-love before you can continue to love your partner. The girls sing about wanting to just be left to be themselves after leaving a horrible relationship. “Love is Blind” is another preppy song, the drumbeats give off a youthful glow. The sweet vocals by Bomi, Naeun and Hayoung, even though they are singing about a dangerous love, makes you feel happy whilst listening to it. The fifth song in the album, “Overwrite”, is one of my favourites from the tracklist. The melancholic ballad takes you on a journey of heartbreak with the lyrics; My diary which was full of you, is now filled with mundane stories, My days which only had you, are now days with different colours,
Overwrite, overwrite, overwrite, It’s a shame that our stories get erased word by word, So, I try to preserve them, but they keep overwrite, overwrite, overwrite “Moment”, written by Chorong, is a song that seems very personal. Listening to the song it seems to be addressed to their fans, or each other. It seems to be the most emotional song of the album, sure to tug at your heartstrings with the sincere words. Lastly the track, “Everybody Ready?” is a nice little addition from the group. The song itself was released last year on their anniversary for their fans. The song written by Eunji is a nice little energetic treat for the fans when listening to the album. Apink’s new album is a nice refreshing addition to spring. The Mini album shows many sides to the group. The tracks explore wanting, heartbreak and loneliness as well as the discovery of self-love. The title track did not disappoint as the girls continue with the new fierce style which is also unmistakably Apink.

HIP HOP SPOTLIGHT NAFLA BY NATHAN SARTAIN
AFTER THE OPENING HALF OF 2019 CONTINUED A FUN-LOVING, SONICALLY LIGHT PATH FOR NAFLA, IT WAS HARD TO PREDICT WHAT WOULD SOON COME. Heralded as a maestro of boom bap - a style which was prominent in East-Coast rap during the early ‘90s, favouring a heavy usage of the bass and snare drums - the only real deviations from his favoured approach came early in his career, or later on in collaborations with cloud-rapper and frequent musical partner Loopy. So, when part one of u n u dropped, complete with some pre-released singles, it marked a new phase for the hip-hop artist’s career; one that would see him become maturer, more sonically versatile, but still intrinsically Nafla. Split into two parts which would ultimately combine to form the full-length 19 track effort, much like how Zico amalgamated his Thinking EPs into one album, the somewhat conceptual offering documents lost love, new romance and all the feelings in-between whilst moving between tinges of R&B, trap and his typical boom bap sonics. From opener “ice coffee,” the tone is set. An R&B-infused track which utilises languid synths, shuffling percussion and a smart guitar loop, Nafla’s shaky vocals shine as he sing-raps about how small memories, such as drinking coffee, are gone because of his dedication to work. It’s reflective brilliance, a kind shown throughout the record and never failing to pack emotional vehemence. Whether it’s “good morning,” a solemn acoustic track or “burn,” a trap-leaning cut which allows for the 28-year-old to wear his heart on his sleeve as vulnerable vocals shine through the simplistic instrumentation, there’s something poignantly candid about everything. The listener can feel the emotion packed into each and every track with a frankness that is hard to find these days, and that’s special.
There are some tonal shifts, however. “under the ground,” a collaboration with formidable artist DEAN, sees a return to more confident, boom bap style. Fast-paced raps dominate the verses before a catchy hook, one which exclaims “you want it on a Thursday,” takes centre-stage, shifting towards a self-harmonising decree of one-sided love. It’s more carefree and fun than a lot of the more meaningful tracks but still serves a necessary purpose, allowing for a quick change of pace before the seamless transition into “I’m in love.” The vibrant, higher-key melody, percussive loops and subtle disc-scratches add a tangible sense of organised mess to the mix, perhaps leaning into the frenzy that is the emotion of love, but it’s the chantable earworm of a refrain that really earns the track some merit. But, as alluded to before, it’s the impactful poignancy of the record which stands out most ardently. The moody guitar riffs and trap beats of “far from home,” the scratchy, raw acoustics of “fate,” the languid groove of “merlot.” It’s these affecting touches on tracks that ultimately mould the disposition of the record, accentuating the rawness of u n u in an uncompromising way. Throughout the two instalments, each distinguished but yet somewhat transcendental in their sonic tones and discussed topics - the first leaning towards initial heartbreak, the second towards the personal psyche and new love - Nafla crafts something meaningful without being overbearing, and reflective without being exclusively solemn. With standout songs such as “slow motion,” which brims with trendy instrumental beats and breezy flow, it’s clear the 28-year-old has confidence in his own vulnerability, storytelling, and where he is willing to go with his style. There’s no telling where the MKIT RAIN star will end up next and that, over everything else, is the most exciting part.

A LOT OF PEOPLE WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT MUSIC IN KOREA, THEY AUTOMATICALLY GO TO KPOP OR THE MORE TRADITIONAL MUSIC YOU HEAR IN THE TOURIST SPOTS, BUT WHAT IF THERE WAS A WHOLE NEW WORLD OF MUSIC OUT THERE, IT’S NOT AS HIDDEN AS YOU THINK. WE ARE TALKING ABOUT KOREAN MUSICALS.
A long list of people who have been regulars in the scene include: Super Junior’s Heechul, Sungmin, Kyuhyun, Yesung, and Ryeowook; F(x)’s Luna, SHINee’s Key and Onew; Infinite’s Sungkyu; Vixx’s Leo, N and Ken; EXO’s Baekhyun, Xiumin and Chen; and Girls Generation’s Seohyun - This is just a very small handful of artists who have participated in stage shows or musicals.
Like other countries around the world, Korea has embraced the love of diversifying music by including musicals that involve rap, pop, opera, classical, country, dance and metal music, but why are musicals an untapped source of music that even the most die-hard fans don’t really access? Who are the upcoming stars of the musical world that could easily break into mainstream music entertainment?
Just like regular idols, musical actors are stars in their own right and have their own large fan bases. The rush to get tickets to the latest shows a can be even more cut-throat than getting tickets to a Kpop concert, especially if the starring roles feature more popular idols. With tickets being hard to come by, some musicals are available on DVD or release an album of the musical - Think of a musical audiobook, and yes, they have the elaborate packaging just like -pop albums with their own photo cards, photo books and posters.
A lot of Korean musicals are renditions of classic literature, telling a story through a mix of lyrical and spoken word, large sets, extreme costumes and a few familiar faces and upcoming stars. Whilst a lot of Kpop idols are part of groups, there comes a time where members are called into the military which in turn halts the promotions of the group through these moments, a lot of idols audition for parts in musicals, they already have the skill of learning lyrics and choreographies very fast, some also have a history of acting, and most of whom can sing live.
With the Korean musical scene being extremely popular in Asia, there is a treasure trove of songs and performances to be explored. Sadly it’s not as easy to get your hands on the performances of the shows, but a deep dive into YouTube will allow you to find some gems. A hotspot for some of the biggest musicals is the YouTube channel OD Company, where they release official music videos of the latest shows.
THERE IS A HUGE SELECTION OF MUSICALS AROUND, BUT WHICH ONES SHOULD YOU START WITH? HERE ARE A FEW THAT WE RECOMMEND:
MOZART! Originally a German musical, it was first performed in 1999 and has travelled around the world to ten different countries - the latest rendition being recast for the 2020 release in South Korea. The story is based on the famous composer and the flamboyant life he lived, it has amazing visuals mixing period attire with modern-day structures, addictive lyrics that tell a story, and modern fusion renditions of the classical music created by Mozart himself. Some of the key cast for past performances of Mozart! consist of Park Eun Tae, Kim Junsu (XIA), Kyuhyun (Super Junior) and Park Hyo Shin.
DRACULA Based on the original 1931 movie and the 1897 book by Bram Stoker, the show originated in California and expanded throughout twelve other countries. In 2014 it made its way to Seoul where Kim Junsu took the main role of Dracula - The role is currently being revived by the same performer for 2020. The production has caused a stir for having a technically advanced set design and for being at the forefront for use of modern techniques whilst keeping the essence of traditional musical standards.
JEKYLL & HYDE Created in 1990 and based on the original novel by Robert Louis Stephenson, the first show premiered in Houston,Texas. Telling the story of a power-hungry doctor and an experiment on his body that goes wrong and transforms his body and soul to a whole new being. There is a scene called “The Transformation� in which you see the main actor use the skills of stage magic to turn one half of his body from Dr Jekyll to Mr Hyde all whilst singing their heart out - Its truly impressive. We recommend you watch the version with Hong Kwang Ho.
DEATH NOTE Based on the manga and animated series of the same name by Tsugumi Ohioan and Takeshita Obata, the musical debuted in Japan in 2015. Featuring key characters L, Light, Ryuk, Rem and Misa, it became an instant hit with fans of the series as well as musical fans. The Korean cast had a strong presence with a mix of actors, kpop idols, and musical idols.

“Extraordinary You” is a fantasy romantic comedy that tells the story of Eun Dan Oh (Kim Hye Yoon). Dan Oh learns she is a character in a manhwa (comic book) and attempts to rebel against the plot to change her fate, encouraging Ha Ru (SF9’s Rowoon) to do the same.
“Dr Romantic” is a medical melodrama series that revolves around Doldam Hospital and its main surgeon, Kim Sa Bu (Han Suk Kyu). The genius, triple-board surgeon teaches his recruits – Kang Dong Joo (Yoo Yoon Seok) and Yoon Seo Jung (Seo Hyun Jin) in season one, and Seo Woo Jin (Ahn Hyo Seop) and Cha Eun Jae (Lee Sung Kyung) in season two – to fight against power and money for the sake of their patients.
“Strong Woman Do Bong Soon” is an action-packed romantic comedy that tells the story of Do Bong Soon (Park Bo Young). Her genetic superstrength leads Ainsoft CEO Ahn Min Hyuk (Park Hyung Sik) to hire her as his bodyguard after a series of anonymous threats. The two soon find themselves mixed up in a serial murder case in the Dobong neighbourhood, and Bong Soon’s strength must be enough to fight the evil that’s brewing.
For those in need of something bright and heart-fluttering in the midst of this pandemic, this is the Kdrama for you! This drama has everything you could consider a cliché – the stereotypical “boymeets-girl” plotline, a boisterous protagonist with a strong drive, a villain with a sob story and the adorable yet completely cringeworthy couple that you cannot help but root for. However, what makes this drama so appealing is its satirical take on the typical manhwa storyline. The drama focuses on the manhwa’s supporting characters who fight for their paths as they become aware of their fictional world, and although it might appear to be a predictable storyline, the plot consists of multiple twists and turns for our enjoyment. An interesting note to add is that it’s Kim Hye Yoon’s first role since Sky Castle, and if you thought highly of her acting there, this drama will only certify that. Her role as Eun Dan Oh is a complete contrast – she’s full of smiles and, strangely enough, not always studying. So, if you’re looking for something light and well-written, but also leaves you with something to take away, then make sure to catch this Kdrama on Netflix. ALSO WATCH: “W: Two Worlds Apart” (Netflix), “Chicago Typewriter” (Netflix).
This Kdrama was a commercial hit in South Korea, and it’s not difficult to figure out why. It’s got a well-planned story arc, a hilarious supporting cast and many thought-provoking messages for us to ponder over. In particular, each season has its own prominent feature. In season one, for instance, there’s a large focus on the medical aspect of the drama and the world-building of Doldam Hospital, creating this sense of realism for us to immediately engage with. In season two, this foundation gives more room for writers to focus on character development, with the drama’s messages reflected in the characters’ own lives. In both seasons, there’s one common thread that grabs your interest: Kim Sa Bu. Han Suk Kyu mixes the character’s selfless morals with a somewhat boastful attitude, making it impossible to look away. So, if you’re looking that will keep you engaged and fill up your free time during quarantine, catch this Kdrama series on either Netflix or Viki. ALSO WATCH: Doctor Stranger (Viki, Netflix), Good Doctor (Viki, Netflix).
If you’re in need of a good laugh, this is the Kdrama to watch. Not only does this script contain plenty of comical one-liners, but its goofy cartoon effects make it all the more entertaining to watch. This comical element is mixed with an eerie storyline – something you wouldn’t expect from the show – and despite its complete contrast in mood, it gives you a break from the extremes of each. There are a few drawbacks to the comical side. For instance, male characters become the victim of homosexual stereotypes and there is also the inappropriate depiction of a fake Indian monk. However, if you are able to overlook these aspects for the sake of completing the Kdrama, you’ll realise that the key highlight is the chemistry between the lead actors. The progression of Bong Soon and Min Hyuk’s relationship is utterly delightful to watch, and you cannot help but swoon over Min Hyuk’s caring, protective nature. So, if you’re looking for something adorable that’s mixed with dark, eerie elements, then catch this drama either on Viki or Netflix! CONTAINS SPOILERS Sometimes it’s hard to be a woman… What exactly are the main priorities when it comes to love? Is it looks? Personality? Their financial situation and profession? As a society, we form a construct of what love means. Of course, it means similarities, it means connection and it means an evident display of passion between two people. Most couples are within the same age and possess a similar individual and family wealth. However “Something in the Rain” redefines the meaning of love, emphasising that love knows no societal boundaries, displaying love between a couple with an age-gap and different familial situations.

JTBC and Netflix released “Something in the Rain”, also known as “Pretty Noona who buys me food”, in 2018. The sixteen episodes revolve around mid-30’s office worker Jin-A (Son Ye-Jin, known for playing Yoon Se-Ri in “Crash landing on you”) and the scandalous love she is faced by with Seo Joon-Hee (Jung Hae-Jin, known for playing Woo-Tak in “While you were sleeping”). Jun-Hee is a starry-eyed, games designer and talented artist in his twenties, whose eyes are certainly set on Jin-A from the very start. It is mentioned that Joon-Hee previously had an interest in Jin-A and he has been close to her family ever since the decease of his mother. When we are introduced to Jin-A in the very first episode, she gives the appearance of an overworked and
unappreciated woman, simply trying to get by, working in a Coffee-Bay office – which we soon discover has a problem with the treatment of female employees… She also seemed to have issues with her boyfriend GyuMin (Oh-Ryong) from the very first moment we are introduced to him. Instead of taking an interest in his girlfriend, he sits blank-faced and uninterested and even relating Jin-A and their relationship to a “konjac” - a bland Korean food with no taste or smell! However, we soon discover that Gyu-Min is worse than mouldy konjac, as Jin-A discovers that he cheated on her with another younger girl… Arguably, she is more of the main focus in comparison to any of the other characters, possibly due to the persistence she has in hiding the relationship, especially from her family. Two of the greatest dynamics have to be the relationship between the couple and the friendship of Jin-A and Joon-Hee’s sister Seo KyungSun (Jang So-Yeon).
JIN-A AND JOON-HEE’S RELATIONSHIP: Most dramas showcase intimacy between characters halfway into the series or towards the end, presenting little or no fan service. Some prefer this, but for those who enjoy loveydovey interactions, “Something in the Rain” is the one. One scene displayed rain trickling down the isolated alleyways and backstreets, each droplet hitting a ruby red umbrella in contrast with its surroundings,
the star-struck loves close together underneath. Another showed the first kiss in front of a glimmering harbour, away from the judgemental society that remains a threat. However, such threats are forgotten, as they perceive themselves as the only ones in the world who exist at that moment. Without a doubt, the scenes in Joon-Hee’s apartment are the most memorable, as he picks his love up and kisses her in the kitchen, her hair in a scruffy bun and makeup not done. These scenes could make anyone feel light and envious of such love, as their closeness and passion makes our hearts skip a beat and “Stand by your man” by Carla Bruni (as part of the OST) playing in the background certainly adds to this feeling of love.
JIN-A AND KYUNG-SUN’S FRIENDSHIP: Most friendships within K-Dramas are not that interesting, as the main storyline lies within the relationship of the main characters (“Fight for my way” is an exception). However, the friendship between Jin-A and Kyung-Sun is somewhat refreshing and enjoyable to see. Usually, the main relationship should be the most interesting element of a drama, but arguably, this friendship is just as important! They go very far back and have a genuine, close friendship! They drink together, eat together and see each other pretty much every day, making Kyung-Sun a very important character and an important element of the drama. They are more soulmates than friends and when
Kyung-Sun eventually found out about the relationship, despite her initial shocked reaction that her best friend is dating her younger brother, she very quickly forgives Jin-A and respects her decision. However, Jin-A’s mother is possibly one of the worst characters within the drama, due to her compulsive obsession to have Jin-A married, making her seem like the true evil in Jin-A’s life… Her mother even wanted her to get back together with Gyu-Min, which was only due to his profession and his family’s wealth! Her spiteful attitude towards Jin-A, trying to disallow her from seeing Joon-Hee, truly developed a clear hatred for her. She truly contrasts with her husband, who knew about the relationship from the start but was in full support of it. He is the parent with morale. What makes this drama more interesting and more significant in comparison to some cliché K-Dramas, is the forefront issue of age gap relationships between two adults. It grabs the societal taboo by the throat and demonstrates reactions to the secret relationship between the daring couple. To be honest, the reactions are quite extreme, as the gap between them is only around ten years and between two working mature adults. “Something in the Rain” will make you feel love for the two lovers desperate to be with one another and realise how judgemental society can be. It is certainly not a drama to be sleeping on!

T H E B RO S (2 0 1 7 ) The Bros follows two brothers as they return to their family home in Andong for their father’s funeral. The brothers couldn’t be more different but are both aptly described within the film as “empty vessels with loud mouthpieces”. On their journey home, they encounter a strange
woman called Oh Ro-ra (Lee Ha-nui) who suffers from memory loss after an accident, but ultimately she helps the siblings find out the secrets of their family. Netflix describes The Bros as a comedy which is a little misleading. The film does have many moments that will make you laugh out loud but, underneath the typical slapstick Korean humour, the film is actually very sentimental and emotional. It’s the extra depth that makes this film truly memorable with a few twists and turns (though some are predictable) and quiet moments that really draw you in to the characters. It comes across a bit confused at times, a
hotchpotch of two genres, but it’s surely an entertaining way to spend a few hours if you’re looking for a bit of a laugh (or a bit of a cry, maybe).
TIM E TO H U N T (20 2 0 ) Set in a corrupt dystopian future, Time to Hunt follows four friends as they hatch a plan to rob a gambling house. After pulling the heist off, they prepare to travel to Taiwan to start their lives over in safety but, little do they know, they’ve attracted the attention of a ruthless killer. This film may seem a little dark in the current situation but it is so immersive

that it makes you completely forget about reality. Starring experienced actors Lee Je-hoon (Where Stars Land), Ahn Jae-hong (Reply 1988), Choi Woo-shik (Parasite) and Park Jung-min (Entourage) its clear to say that the acting is phenomenal and makes you feel deeply for morally grey characters. Time to Hunt’s true magic, however, comes from writer and director Yoon Sung-hyun’s impeccable ability to build enormous amounts of tension through his cinematography, music and lighting. The movie’s talented direction allows for truly shocking moments of gore and sadness as well as jump scares. Time to Hunt isn’t for the faint-
hearted, especially at this time, but if you like gritty Korean cinema that will capture your attention then it is the perfect choice.
TUNE IN FOR L OVE (2019) Tune in for Love’s episodic narrative tells the stories of Kim Mi-soo (Kim Go-eun), a gentle part-time worker at a bakery, and Cha Hyun-woo (Jung Hae In), a mysterious and troubled teen. The film spans 11 years and follows the couple as they experience career troubles, budding romance and explosive arguments. But, deep down at the heart of the movie is the question: will love conquer all?
The film is a little less happy-go-lucky than the Netflix poster suggests, instead, it is both heart-warming and heart-wrenching. At around two hours, this film drags ever so slightly, but the amount of time spent with the main characters and the incredible acting makes them seem like they’re real people struggling with genuine problems but find comfort in each other. The film is very reminiscent of A Lot Like Love (2005) and 500 Days of Summer (2009) so if you’re a fan of those and you want to watch a film that will leave you with a warm, bubbly feeling in your stomach and tears in your eyes then check out Tune in for Love.

KPOP FANS ARE AS JUST AS FASHIONABLE AS THEIR IDOLS, TAKING TO SOCIAL MEDIA TO POST THEIR ALBUM-INSPIRED OUTFITS, INCORPORATING CRUCIAL AESTHETIC ELEMENTS INTO THESE ‘FITS. The viral fashion trend is a way for the Kpop community to come together during a particularly difficult time, with many countries enforcing social distancing measures as well as going into lockdown. Taking inspiration from the already popular ‘Outfit of the Day’ (OOTD) trend, fans have brought the designs of their favourite albums to life. The idea is that fans choose their album, pick a theme that matches and get busy snapping photos before uploading them to social media for others to see. Some fans have gone beyond just colour-coordinating their outfits, opting for creative looks similar to the styles and trends worn by idols during promotion.
UKP’s own Jessica Morrison was one of many fans to participate in the trend. She’s opted for a light and dark theme, taking her inspiration from albums by BTS, SuperM and EXO. She’s also taken inspiration from the concept photos in Astro’s Blue Flame and KARD’s Ride on the Wind. Her outfits are cute but super stylish. Jess has shown that less is more, and how to be imaginative and have fun dressing up. She’s kept it fun and creative, and the final result is absolutely phenomenal! While most viral trends die out pretty quickly, dressing as Kpop albums doesn’t seem to be going anywhere just yet. So get creative, whip out your cameras and get snapping!
