Minzy opens up about struggling with mental health and life after 2NE1 by Ann Amarawansa In a recent interview with Billboard, Minzy opens up about that the pressures of being in one of K-Pop’s biggest girl groups and how it led to depression and suicidal thoughts. Formerly a member of the now disbanded 2NE1, Minzy was known for her powerful dancing and onstage charisma. But the 24-year-old singer reveals that she’d spent much of her time feeling lost and isolated, which only got progressively worse due to the group’s prolonged hiatuses and her own delayed solo. During the interview, Minzy also weighs in on the K-Pop industry’s beauty standards and how 2NE1 was often criticized for looking “different” and “not as pretty” as other girl groups. She states that constant barrage of negative comments from netizens affected her deeply.

When the subject of suicide is brought up, the singer mentions SHINee’s Jonghyun — who passed away almost a year ago — and reflects on her own struggles with mental health. She goes on to explain that his death “struck her” because she could understand the feeling of wanting to escape. Minzy shares her thoughts on her departure from 2NE1 and how she’s since felt more secure in herself and career. While she views her members as her “sisters”, she explains that the decision to leave was based on a need to find what she needed and her future. Now, Minzy is moving onto the next chapter in her life, with a flourishing solo career and embarking on her first-ever solo dance tour. We look forward to what she has in store for the future and wish her all the best!

UK ARMY have raised £3360 for UNICEF through BTSLDNWristband. UNICEF revealed the amount on Twitter recently, and thanked fans for their hard work. The fan project consisted of a commemorative wristband. It aimed to be an affordable souvenir for BTS’ concerts back in October. It soon became popular, and UK fans who hadn’t gone to the concert also joined in to raise money for BTS’ UNICEF Campaign. Titled ‘LOVE MYSELF‘, the campaign aims to end youth violence around the world. Wristbands costed £3. There was also the option of purchasing a PVC alongside the wristband, costing only £2 extra. As a result, the project has sold over 1,500 wristbands.

BTSLDNWristband took to Twitter to thank everyone involved in the project. They also announced that they will be creating more projects in the future. The ‘LOVE MYSELF’ campaign kicked off in November 2017 and is in partnership with UNICEF’s #ENDViolence campaign. UK ARMY can expect their donations to make a difference, as funds will be used to protect and support child victims. This includes victims of domestic violence, school violence and sexual assault. The charity also aims to educate local communities in order to prevent violence. If you’d like to know more about the ‘LOVE MYSELF’ Campaign, visit the official website. Alternatively, you can donate here. Congratulations to BTSLDNWristband and UK ARMY on the success of the project!

Blackpink set to make Western debut in 2019 by Samera Iqbal Blackpink is expected to make their Western debut in the first half of 2019. NAVER released an article recently announcing YG’s plans to follow the growth of the US market. This growth, according to the article, aims to center on Youtube views and sound sources. Blackpink currently have 543 million views for ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’ and it is the 10th most-viewed online Youtube video in the first 24 hours. As for Jennie’s ‘SOLO’, the MV has racked up a whopping 115 million views, despit being released a month ago. It appears that they are on track to gain even more views. If Blackpink debut in the US, this could see the UK to also pay attention to the girl group. They have already entered the UK Top 40 in June, and again with Dua Lipa last month. Are you excited to see Blackpink in the Western music industry? Stay tuned to find more!

WHICH CONCERT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE?

BTS X London BTS’ concerts in London are arguably the largest K-pop concerts in the UK to date. So to celebrate the New Year in style, we’re taking a look back at your favourite moments of BTS in London.

10

What was your favourite moment of the concert(s)? “Seeing my daughters face light up when BTS came on stage for first time. The screams and cries. To see them was amazing.” – Kaley, Barnsley “The way they group supported Jungkook when he got upset when he thought he’d let people down after hurting his foot. He was amazing that night and so were they. ” – Ryan, Colchester “When me and my friend gave away our version 2 light sticks to fellow ARMY. Their faces lit up, 2 separate girls. I’m a non hugger but I took the hug from the girl who was so happy. It made my day.” – Kirsty, Milton Keynes “The amount of work that went into creating such a great enviroment and a lot of energy. From the group themselves down to the sycing of the light sticks to each song. The fans sang along even if we didn’t know what we were truly saying, we still made an effort for a group we love.” – Abby, Northern Ireland “My favourite moment was the very moment I walked into the O2. ARMY made me feel so comfortable and confident that I was able to be myself, with no one judging. I began talking to people and getting to know the family I am a part of and I couldn’t be happier

because as soon as BTS came out they proved it all to be true. Army really are BTS’ wings just like how BTS are our wings.” – Cerys, England

If you could tell BTS anything, what would you say? BTS are known to pen a moving lyric or two (‘Spring Day’ says hello from the Melon Weekly Chart, which it hasn’t fallen off of since its release in February 2017), and the skill doesn’t end with the band. We asked you what you would say to BTS if given the chance, and you showed us that you’re just as capable with words as the idols you admire. “Never change.” – Liam, Cambridge “You ask us to love ourselves–make sure you take good care of yourselves, too. Demand that you have time to relax and recover.” – Linda, Wales

“It says ‘Jungkook is Mia’s galaxy’. I’m really happy I could make him smile because I saw him break down on the Tuesday. As a wheelchair user, I know what it’s like to have to sit to the side and watch others do what you want to do but you know you can’t. I know what it’s like to not do something because of an injury and feel like you’ve let the whole world down. So to know that he felt that way too actually broke my heart, and I decided to let him know how special he is to me. I’m so glad it made him happy!” – Mia Allen last 5 years, through thick and thin, and have helped me through a lot. Please come back to the UK soon, it was the best night of my whole life. Never forget that UK Army loves you and will always support you!!! Thank you for helping me love myself.” – Jessica, Derby “I love you so much and I hope you come back again, keep doing what you are doing, I’m so proud of what you have achieved. Please take care of yourselves and remember; love yourself and you will be loved by all.” – Laura, Nottingham “Keep going, you are doing an amazing job, don’t put yourself under so much pressure as you are giving so much energy/time already. Take time out for yourself, look after yourself and each other!” – Aatiqah, Coventry

“Please come back to your in the UK again, you guys are truly an amazing group! I wasn’t able to stay to the very end so I really want to see you guys again!” – Sophie, UK “I would just love to tell BTS how much I love them and I hope that once the tours over and they’ve had plenty of time to rest they’ll come back to England during their next tour!” – Toni, Suffolk “Thank you so much for your music, your happiness, your passion and your strength. You’ve been by my side for the

TROUBLE FOR PENTAGON

BTS MAKE HISTORY AT THE UNITED NATIONS

2018 has not been a good year for CUBE Entertainment. Despite (G)I-DLE slaying with their first comeback and BTOB’s recent concerts, that has not stopped the massive stock blows they suffered from not one but MULTIPLE dating rumours and confirmations for Pentagon. The most hard-hitting of all was the confirmed news of rapper E’Dawn dating former 4Minute member and solo artist, Hyuna – who were promoting as Triple H during their current twoyear-long relationship. Fans have taken the news hard, demanding that E’Dawn leaves the group altogether after disappearing from recent promotions. In response, CUBE took decisive action and announced that they kicked Hyuna and E’Dawn out of the company due to broken “loyalty and trust”. The news caused a major uproar with fans as they have commented on CUBE’s loyalty to their artists by not even informing them until it reached national news. After months of discussion and rumours, both Hyuna and E’Dawn have formally terminated their contracts and have reassured fans through social media.

BTS have had an explosive year with their hit, “IDOL” and a huge tour that spanned across the world. In the American leg of their “Love Yourself” Tour alone, they performed on America’s Got Talent, appeared on Jimmy Fallon and even recreated Fortnite dances on television but one show topped them all. The BigHit group was granted the honour of being the first South Korean group to appear before the United Nations to help launch their Generation Limited initiative; a plan to offer education, training and employment to young people by 2030. RM spoke on behalf of the group, commenting on their Love Myself campaign and his own struggles while growing up & gaining fame as part of BTS. The speech has gained worldwide recognition for more than just their musical recognition as RM encouraged the Congress and the public to show their voice to the world; stating that “No matter who you are, where you’re from, your skin colour, your gender identity, just speak yourself.”

AUGUST

OCTOBER AKB48 MEMBERS DEPART FOR IZ*ONE DEBUT With WannaOne’s time soon coming to an end, another Produce group has joined the ranks. “Produce 48” celebrated its finale in August and the winning trainees have now become IZ*ONE. Releasing their debut track; “La Vie En Rose” in October, the girls have already attracted popularity from both Korea and Japan. AKB48 members, Miyawaki Sakura, Honda Hitomi & Yabuki Nako are part of the final twelve but they certainly left a parting gift for their fans. All three members took part in AKB48’s single, “NO WAY MAN” and Sakura also stood as senbatsu for the final time before their hiatus. However, the break from their original counterparts has not stopped them or the other members from performing fantastically among fans. “La Vie En Rose” has now become a monster debut and gained the group their first music show win; which has been the fastest win from a debuting girl group at only ten days after its release.

PRESENTS... Damnably is a London based record label & publisher, one of their ‘USPs’ is their collection of international artists, and the label certainly has the knack for finding artists with a British appeal. Damnably is the UK home of Busan surf rockers, Say Sue Me. In the latter half of 2018, they also signed up skate punk outfit, Drinking Boys & Girls Choir. Here’s the lowdown on the two groups.

T

SAY SUE ME

he surf-inspired indie rock quartet has a practice room located just five minutes from the Gwangalli Beach in Busan, though it is their love of 60’s surf rock artists such as The Ventures that really cements the inspiration for their sound. Thrown into the mix is a dose of 90’s indie rock melancholy for that perfect ear-worm sound. The group have already extensively toured the UK, both with Japanese rockers Otoboke Beaver and headlining, they have also played festivals such as Brighton’s Great Escape and Focus Wales. In 2019, Say Sue Me will head out on tour again, with an appearance at Cardiff’s Wales Goes Pop! Festival and a ‘Golden Week’ tour with labelmates Otoboke Beaver and Drinking Boys and Girls Choir.

18

U

nlike their labelmates, Drinking Boys & Girls Choir has not played shows in the UK yet. The skate punk trio (Bondu, Meena and MJ) formed in Daegu in 2012, famous during the 90/00s boom of Korean Indie for its hardcore punk scene - a scene that later moved to Seoul. Brought together by a simple ‘Let’s do a rock band!’ notice on MJ’s university message board, the group bonded over social drinks, and their love of music, leading to their descriptive group name.

UKP MAGAZINE | WINTER 2018

DRINKING BOYS AND GIRLS CHOIR Signing to Damnably should bring DBGC a similar experience of the UK scene as Say Sue Me, who were able to become full-time musicians in 2018! With UK shows already lined up it is only a matter of time before their loud and infectious sound firms its place on the growing international indie scene here in the UK.

GOLDEN WEEK The Otoboke Beaver Golden Week tour sees both Say Sue Me and Drinking Boys and Girls Choir play six shows in the UK together. UKP MAGAZINE | WINTER 2018

Debuting in May 2018 under Cube Entertainment, the girl-group is composed of 6 members: Miyeon, Minnie, Soojin, Soyeon, Yuqi, and Shuhua and is already en route to lead the next generation of Kpop. The group even snagged an award for Best New Artist (Female) at the 2018 Melon Music Awards. Despite being relatively new, (G) I-DLE quickly gained popularity achieving combined views of 2.2 million for the “Latata” music video within two days of its release and exceeding 5.9 million views within the first week. The mini-album debuted at number 13 on the Gaon Album Chart issued on May 10, 2018. After a month after debut, they earned their spot on Billboard’s Social 50 Chart by charting at number 36. However the (G)I-DLE’s members have been in the public-eye prior to debut, most notably group leader and main rapper Soyeon.

Soyeon first rose to fame after competing on Met’s survival show “Produce 101” where she placed 20th in the final episode, thus failing to become a member of the winning girl group, I.O.I. She also appeared on the 3rd season rap competition show Unpretty Rapstar, where she finished as the second runner-up. Following this, Soyeon debuted as a soloist, releasing two digital singles: “Jelly” and “Idle Song”. In early November, members Soyeon and Miyeon debuted alongside American singers Madison Beer and Jaria Burns as the virtual Kpop group, K/DA. The group was created by Riot Games as part of the popular multiplayer online video game, League of Legends. With Miyeon as vocalist Ahri and Soyeon as rapper Akali, the debut single “POP/STARS” became a viral sensation. It’s clear that (G)I-DLE have no intention in slowing down, and we eagerly wait to see what the future has in store for them. With a rumoured comeback in January 2019, we won’t have to wait for long! 21

SUNMI – ‘Siren’

100% - ‘Heart’ It has been a rough year for 100% as their leader Minwoo sadly passed away in March from a cardiac arrest. Despite this, it’s nice to see the group focus once more on Korean promotions given their success in neighbouring Japan. ‘Heart’ is a smooth dance track with a beautiful aesthetic in the music video.

SUNMI’s songs seem to me to have a real power about them. They are undeniably catchy and she always brings forth a femininity and style that is unusual and refreshing. ‘Siren’ completely fits into this framework – she is unapologetic in her presentation and explores unique imagery in bold colour. She is a female soloist that will surely stick in anyone’s mind.

Jennie – SOLO The long-awaited solo from BLACKPINK’s Jennie came along and was very well received by BLINKs everywhere. As expected, she shows off her beauty and attitude in this aptly titled track.

EXO – ‘Tempo’ Though many people were surprised at how little promotion this track received, I’m sure it didn’t mess up the tempo (sorry) for this K-Pop juggernaut! As slick and polished as ever, the boys of EXO show off some fast rap-like lyricism and switch it up frequently with harmonies. Typical of SM to keep it mixed and unpredictable!

Season’s Sounds

Girls’ Generation Oh!GG - ‘Lil Touch’ A titan in the K-Pop industry, this girl group have also had their fair share of unrest with changes in contracts causing members to part ways, though not writing off future reunions. What came out of it all was Oh!GG – a group made up of the remaining 5 members. ‘Lil Touch’ is a fast-paced number that wouldn’t be out of place within European charts in its ambient club sound.

We’re taking a look back at some of the best releases of September 2018 onwards! By Holly Smith

UKP MAGAZINE | WINTER 2018

TWICE – ‘YES or YES’ Speaking of K-Pop juggernaut, here is another. TWICE came back with their special brand of sweet and cute pop music. This track was likely getting fans bouncing from day one, and as always, the members give us some great choreography in the MV.

iKON – ‘Goodbye Road’ Topping the huge popularity of ‘Love Scenario’ is always going to be hard for iKON. However, ‘Goodbye Road’ has merit of its own. It’s a beautiful ballad with iKON signature, authentic sound. I am always impressed with iKON’s ability to walk the line between soft and tough in their image. They also manage to maintain rawness in their music that is often missing in many a K-Pop groups’ sound.

RM – ‘forever rain’ As always, RM doesn’t shy away from tough topics and feelings. He raps about a feeling of immense loneliness and how the rain provides a sort of company and reassurance for him in a tough and unfeeling world. Hopefully it gives many listeners comfort in that they are not alone if they feel the same way, but we also hope he is doing okay himself!

IU – ‘BBIBBI’ As IU has matured in the spotlight, we have seen her content mature along with her. She now frequently discusses issues in her songs such as self-image and expectations put on her as a female celebrity. In this track, she firmly asserts her boundaries to those that always try to delve into her business and criticise her for every move she makes. She has been able to maintain her cute a sweet aesthetic, but a real strength now lays within it. It seems she is using her music as a form of communication to those who need to be put in their place. There is an authenticity to her that comes from her speaking her mind and confronting these feelings in her work.

IZ*ONE – ‘La Vie en Rose’ Key – ‘Forever Yours (Feat. Soyou) How did it take this long for SHINee’s Key to be given a solo gig?! As you would have probably guessed, given Key’s love of bold fashion choices, the MV is full to the brim with colour. It has SHINee’s now signature surrealist flavour and Soyou’s additional vocals are always beautiful.

This newly debuted KoreanJapanese girl group is already making waves in the K-Pop industry. They were formed through the Mnet competition reality show ‘Produce 48’ and it will be interesting to see if they are able to create the same success as their predecessors and, perhaps, surpass it.

S

inger-songwriter, Sobae (소베) released her fourth single and music video, “ELEVATE” which collaborates the thoughts and feelings of her fans. Whilst her latest track conveys her “signature silky vocals”, she provides a change to her style from her previous tracks. From incorporating a combination of “hypnotizing jazz piano, powerful trap beat, and uplifting lyrics”, “ELEVATE” is her most ambitious track released yet! Sobae has recently been brought to spotlight for her unconventional route leading up to her music career and has openly shared the rewards and challenges she has faces diving into the “terrifying uncertainty” which accompanies her artist route. However, she is now living the “millennial desk worker’s fantasy” as a musician.

Please introduce yourself to the UKP readers? Hey UKP readers, it’s singer-songwriter, Sobae! I just released my track, “Elevate”, which is my most treasured song yet, because I built it with my fans. I hope you find that it’s a feel-good track to jam to this holiday season. Previously it has been mentioned that you took an unconventional route towards your music career, what inspired you to divert towards music? What difficulties did you have to overcome whilst making this decision? I was formerly trained as a news reporter and worked at a climate change foundation before making the dive. While both were very fulfilling jobs, I felt like I was always suppressing my creative desires. I have always been passionate about music, but dismissed it as an unrealistic dream until my current producer (Eddie Shin of Aziatix) heard something I put up on my Soundcloud and reached out to me. The thought of abandoning my stable career for a path full of uncertainty in the entertainment industry was absolutely terrifying, but I knew that I would regret it if I didn’t give it a shot. I’ve always believed that there’s room for opportunity and growth when you lean into fear. If you had to pick one song you’ve created which best describes yourself,

How did it feel to have already collaborated with 2 big names (San E and Mad Clown) in the South Korean hip-hop scene? Do you have any artists you aspire to collaborate with in the future? It was an honour to be able to tour the U.S. with San E and Mad Clown. They are not only talented rappers, but I learned that they were able to reach the top of the game through unglamorous, hard work. There are so many artists I respect and admire (so my answer changes depending on who I’ve been listening to), but I’ve been going through a Jay Park phase. His charm, talent, and the way he manifests a seamless blend of Eastern and Western influences is fascinating. We’ve heard for one of your songs, “Holiday” you spent time filming the video yourself? How was the process and are you hoping to film more productions like that in the future? We built a homemade body rig to have the camera as my first-person perspective, and the

weight of the camera proved to be much heavier than I thought. For two days we shopped, packed, travelled, and even walked my dogs whilst I was wearing the camera rig. I suffered from a little bit of back pain for a bit, but it was definitely worth it. In terms of filming more productions, I’ve been dabbling in video-related work and content creation for a while, but it’s an area I’d like to explore more seriously in the future! You said in an interview earlier, that being a budding reporter was quite like music in the storytelling aspect. What kind of story do you want to tell about yourself through your music? I hope that my music serves either as one, an uplifting and empowering purpose for others, or two, a vessel for me to vicariously experience emotions and events that I myself have not. This entire endeavour already feels somewhat surreal to me, so I’d like to use this opportunity to further push those boundaries and perhaps be a source of positivity along the way. How do you know a song is right for you, i.e. right for the sound you’re building? There’s usually an “a-ha” moment for me, in which a part of the melody comes to me first, and then I build the rest of the song around it. After completing a sketch of the track, I usually leave it for a day or two so that I can have

fresh ears to determine whether it’s worth developing. There are a lot of demos that haven’t passed the test! Is touring in the US as a Korean-American artist, with Korean artists, different from promoting in Korea as a KoreanAmerican artist? I definitely occupy a strange space in the K-music market. I have been releasing mostly English tracks, but am currently geographically located in Korea. This poses a lot of challenges, but I am embracing it as a part of my journey as a “struggling independent artist” which I speak openly about in my recent web show, “Sobae’s Balls”. This title serves a purpose and will make much more sense once you’ve watched it. You’ve recently opened up a personal web-series for your fans, providing a behind-the-scenes look of your life. Do you have any new ideas you want to implement in your series in the future? I don’t mean to give a copout answer, but we have a lot of exciting projects up our sleeves and can’t wait to share with you! If I had to describe your music in a few words, how would you describe it yourself?

It has to be “Elevate”! In my web show “Sobae’s Balls”, I invited everyone watching to provide inspiration for my next track. I received a lot of heartfelt messages about people’s ideas, stories, triumphs, worries, and everything in between— and they all made it into the final lyrics, melody, music video theme, in one way or another. Will you be exploring more genres of music in the future as a singersongwriter? If so, what genres do you intend to branch into? While my roots are in R&B, I think I have already been flirting with variations of trap and jazz—and will continue to do so. Finally, with the release of your latest track “Elevate”, explain to the UKP readers as to why they should give it a listen? I wanted to write a groovy and uplifting track that serves as a reminder “you deserve to be loved for exactly who you are”, in the words of one fan who inspired me. If not for the unique collaborative process of how I built it, I hope you simply enjoy this feelgood track when you need a little pick-me-up, because I made it with a lot of love! xx

Groovy, daring and fun! What has to be your favourite track to produce so far?

which would you choose? “Homegirl”! When I was writing it, I wanted it to be an anthem of sorts and dedicate it to all the amazing women in my life. I also aspire to be an approachable, down-to-earth, authentic “homegirl” to my fans and anyone who listens to my music.

Emily Stokes is a sixth form student currently studying English Language, Spanish and Music. In her free time, she likes to play videogames and listen to music. She is also a social media promoter/marketer from Radio Kimchi UK, a platform that aims to promote Korean culture and music via a weekly radio show.

It’s been on my mind recently, mostly the feeling of trying to comprehend my existential purpose in life. As a hormonal teenager, currently going through my final year of sixth form education, this is an expected feeling shared with minds like mine. I’m sure you can empathise with me if you’ve ever gone through further education. The ways in which we cope with the worries and contemplations of the future are definitely subjective and personal, however focusing on your mind, just stopping for a second and taking care of yourself instead of trying to please others and the system can be exceptionally beneficial. This can be done through performing yoga, writing your doubts in a notebook or simply just taking a walk outside.

The simplicities of life are, in most cases, the ones that are the most healing. Of

course, suppressing worries and negative 26

thoughts can be a lot easier than talking to a loved one because you have full control. Once these thoughts are revealed to the world, things start to become harder to navigate and focus is lost. However, I’d like to think that if we promote mindfulness and self-care in schools, online or even in the workplace, we can start to take care of ourselves first as a priority and then have guidance in making sure we have the option to speak vout if that is helpful to you. You’ve probably heard of ASMR right? A phenomenon in the YouTube community that is quite popular nowadays. It’s no longer a vague, fantasy-like adventure with haircut roleplays and torture chambers that you’ll casually stumble across on your recommended list; it’s now therapeutic. An alleviation of the effects of insomnia, depression and stress. When ASMR is taken seriously,

I’ve included the name to my favourite video and also a link to a Christmas themed video too, to get you into the spirit (in a relaxing way of course!).

They all have a plethora of content and if you’ve never experienced ASMR before, here is the official definition:

ASMR [ey-es-em-ahr] Autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR) is a calming, pleasurable feeling often accompanied by a tingling sensation. This tingle is said to originate in a person’s head and spread to the spine (and sometimes the limbs) in response to stimulation. The stimuli that trigger ASMR vary from person to person.

ASMR PPOMO

Favourite video: 10 Scalp Massage & Hair Brushing Christmas themed video: ASMR Christmas Makeup for Her

ASMR Ppomo has nearly 1.6 million subscribers and she is probably the most popular Korean ASMRtist, maybe even in the whole ASMR community. She is known for not showing her entire face, leaving a sense of mystery amongst fans. She is also known for producing long videos and due to her large amount of content, she does livestreams promoting her videos whether they be old or new ones. I love her content because of the sheer length of them and her microphones are sensitive too. She takes great care in making sure every sound and scenery is perfectly relaxing and appropriate!

it no longer becomes a taboo topic and it should never be an embarrassing thing to enjoy and embrace. So as an advocate of self-care, I thought I’d share with you 3 of my favourite Korean ASMRtists that I hope you’ll check out and enjoy!

DanaASMR hasn’t got a subscriber count on her channel but she has a total of 181,661,229 views from her videos, which can only mean that she is popular in the ASMR community. She uses a variety of microphones but my favourites are the Lewitt LCT 550s she uses. These microphones are a bit more sensitive than ASMR Ppomo’s which allows for a more clean, distinct sound that doesn’t sound harsh at loud frequencies. I recently discovered her, despite the fact that she has been creating ASMR for quite a long time! DanaASMR really thinks about the setting in her videos and creating an atmosphere which I think is very important.

BABZIASMR

Favourite video: Korean ASMR Tingly Trigger Words Christmas themed video: Korean ASMR Soft Spoken, Whisper Ramble

BabziASMR has 228,088 subscribers’ and has less videos compared to the ASMRtists mentioned previously and his microphones aren’t as advanced in his older videos, but they are definitely still of a high quality. His older videos include more traditional triggers like mouth sounds, tapping and roleplays. As shown in his newer videos, you can see that he has recently got new mics and his newer content is more based on mukbang. This is great for people who love eating sounds, but you do get hungry watching them so beware!

Here’s five ways you can beat the winter blues and enjoy the season in Korea.

Join a snow festival in a mountain village In the mountain villages of Gangwon province, winter can last up to six months long. Snowfall begins early, and cold winds blow from Siberia. Sounds like the perfect conditions for an outdoor mountain festival, right? Taebaek village seems to think so, as they host an annual festival, Taebaeksan Mountain Snow Festival (태백산 눈축제) this year from 18th January to 3rd February. There’s a huge snow sculpture event, a charming igloo cafe, a mountain hiking competition, and an ice fountain to enjoy. For more information, visit the official website: festival. taebaek.go.kr

See people making like penguins!

Seogwipo, a coastal small town on the southern end of Jeju Island, is home to one of the coldest and weirdest events in winter - the Seogwipo Penguin Swimming Festival. But there’s no penguins being forced into swimming here, it’s all people, who are daring enough to take a dip in the icy waters. The event is usually held on the 2nd of January as a way to welcome in the new year. Lots of fun activities and events are held on the beach and all swimmers get some hot soup and fish cakes. The southern port town of Busan is a good place to escape Seoul’s hustle and bustle any time of year, but those who love Christmas should head to the the Gwangbok-ro area of the Jung-gu District to check out the Busan Christmas Tree Festival. Gangwon province’s Yongpyong Ski Resort is the largest ski and snowboard resort in Korea, so if you’re a ski bunny, this will definitely be your jam. It hosted the technical alpine skiing events for the 2018 Winter Olympics and Paralympics held earlier this year in Pyeongchang. It has 31 slopes, and plenty of skiing and snowboarding lessons available for beginners. It also served as a drama backdrop for scenes in popular K-dramas Winter Sonata, Goblin, Sad Love Story and That Winter, The Wind Blows. KOREAN NEW YEAR’S FOOD In 2019, following the Lunar calendar, New Year’s celebrations will take place on February 5th. Known as Seollal, the festivities are not just to ring in another year, but also to pay respects to ancestors as well as to catch up with living family members. During Seollal, Koreans often wear a Hanbok, perform ancestral rites and talk well into the night. In Korea, the rush to prepare for Seollal typically begins a week in advanced. Food is prepared and people begin to purchase and prepare gifts for their parents and relatives. Gifts vary, but store gift cards and money are frequently exchanged. Popular gifts for parents include ginseng, health products and honey. It is a hectic time to travel, as everyone is making arrangements to go back to their hometowns for the holiday. Travel can take up to two or four times longer than usual due to the heavy traffic! Celebrations on the day vary from household to household, but generally, the morning of Seollal begins with family members gathering in their Seolbim (special Seollal clothes) for am ancestral ritual which focuses on expressing respect and gratitude to those before them. Everyone gathers and eats ritual food such as tteokguk (rice cake soup), beef and eggs. Eating tteokguk on New Year’s Day is said to add a year to one’s age. After the meal, the younger generation of the family lay their respects to the elders by performing a deep bow called sebae . The elders then offer their blessings and wishes for a prosperous year. Seoul is typically a busy city, but during Seollal, it becomes relatively quiet and peaceful. Shops and restaurants typically close for two days but recreational facilities such as national parks and major palaces will stay open. It is a truly special time for the city that never sleeps! 34

DRAMA AND FILM ROUND UP If you’re looking for another K-Drama to get your teeth into, then look no further than from this year’s releases of dramas and films! For the majority of the list that is discussed, you can find them on Netflix alongside many other excellent choices to binge on.

In addition, it was also boasted to be the highest rated Korean dramas in cable television history and was chosen as the winner for the Excellence Award for Korean Drama at the 13th Seoul International Drama Awards. In this light-heartened drama, it explores how their relationship blossomed from being acquaintances to something more.

The drama was perceived to be very well received by the general public for it’s strong storytelling and cinematography. It delves into the raw history of Korea with the main protagonist Choi Yoo Jin (Lee Byung Hun), having to endure a difficult childhood of slavery and later goes on to flee to the US to rebuild himself a new life. Once he returns back to his homeland, he meets the daughter of a high-class aristocrat Go Ae Shin (Kim Tae Ri), whom he develops strong feelings for. The plot thickens as he

uncovers a plot formed by foreign forces who are trying to colonise Korea.

BUSTED

The cast transform into sleuths to enlist on Project D and are later recruited to be private detectives who are tasked with finding out all the clues left behind on the victim’s crime scene and to take it upon themselves to uncover the culprit for each of the 10 episodes. For those who enjoyed this show, then there’s great news as it has been renewed for a second season!

YG FUTURE STRATEGY OFFICE

BIGBANG’s Seungri takes charge in this satire styled show, which features a variety of his own labelmates, from BLACKPINK, former 2NE1 member Park Bom, WINNER and iKON. Often at times, the frontman of the show Seungri is the butt of jokes, though he takes it all in his stride, making him the ideal candidate to host the entertaining show. It runs for 8 episodes on an average of 23-28 minutes, which makes for easy watching. Though for any fans familiar with how YG artists work, it’s an added bonus to see them collectively in one show.

FILMS STEEL RAIN

This action thriller movie was included in the Top 11 Films at the 38th Korean Association of Film Critics Awards. The film trails around the story of a former North Korean security agent, following the aftermath of a coup, his hand is forced to escape to the South with the unconscious, injured leader. In order to prevent a nuclear war erupting on their doorsteps, Eom Chul Woo (Jung Woo Sung) has to work together with the senior member of security services of South Korea Kwak Chul Woo (Kwak Do Won).

PSYCHOKINESIS

Korean superhero – protagonist Shin Seok Heon (Ryu Seung Ryong) was gifted with the power of telekinetic abilities by drinking water from a mountain spring that had been affected by a meteor. The film was released early on this year in January and was also wellreceived. The story looks into the life of his estranged daughter Shin Roo Mi (Shim Eun Kyung), the owner of a successful Korean fried chicken restaurant that is based in a traditional market. She is faced with the threat of

behind the scenes parts surrounding BTS’ sold out ‘The Wings Tour 2017 Live Trilogy Episode III’ which was a raging commercial success. It will show the raw cuts that we don’t normally get to witness, the turmoil of emotions that spirals nearly out of control and close calls of the members’ health from working themselves to the bone. There’s a saying that there’s a price for fame, but looking at the turbulent journey that BTS has endured from an outsider’s perspective, it seems clear that these same seven members who once shared a dream to become artists in their own right can now truly say that they have made it.

THE SMILE HAS LEFT YOUR EYES

DRAMA REVIEW

There’s a specific kind of pain to be had in watching a drama as it airs. There’s anticipation, extra suspense, and frustration that every cliffhanger is just a little too far away from the next episode. Having to wait does pay off in the end. The satisfaction is increased tenfold and there’s little to no chance of spoilers. This is where TVN’s drama for the latter half of this year, The Smile Has Left Your Eyes, comes into its own. This is a drama that’s made to be watched slowly. It’s meant to puzzle and confuse it’s audience, to make them second guess themselves and rethink how they view characters with each snippet of information revealed. And though the end is nearly in sight, there’s still so much that the audience is left guessing. Otherwise titled A Hundred Million Stars from the Sky, The Smile Has Left Your Eyes is a remake of the 2002 Japanese drama of that alternative name. WHilst this might have hindered the twist and turns of it’s plot, it’s safe the assume that most people watching the Korean version will not have much knowledge of that original. This has benefited the writer, director and entire cast greatly. It gives them scope to 40

to change certain elements without much criticism for diverting from the original plot, and allows the actors to make their characters their own. In this, they really succeed. The plot centres around three key characters, all of whom seem to have interconnecting pasts. There is the sibling duo Yoo Jin Kang (Jung So Min) and Yoo Jin Gook (Park Sung Woon), who both care about each other deeply. Jin Gook is far more protective of his younger sister than it first seems, carrying secrets that are at odds with the upstanding detective he tries to portray himself as. Jin Kang, by comparison, is a much more open book despite her past appearing murky. In the centre of these two is Kim Moo Young (Seo In Guk). Tying them together, Moo Young is a complete mystery. His actions appear sincere at times, but it’s clear that he’s skilled at manipulating and lying. What first becomes clear in watching these characters interact is that this drama isn’t interested in setting up the common bad guy versus good guy story. It can’t be when it’s good guys turn out to be not so morally perfect as is initially believed, and bad guys have

much more sympathetic reasoning behind their actions. Perhaps it would be easier to spot the difference if these characteristic were as clean cut as you try to believe. However, it’s clear from the first two episodes alone that they are not. Motives are murky. The lines between right and wrong are blurred. That’s exactly what The Smile Has Left Your Eyes tries to achieve - an unsettling distrust of characters the audience inherently wants to trust - and does it subtly enough to keep drawing viewers back. Of course there wouldn’t be enough drama to be drawn back to if it weren’t for the extended cast of characters. Each one of them seems important for one key aspect Moo Young. It’s quite apparent early on that Moo Young likes to toy with people. He enjoys influencing their decisions, seeing beyond their reasoning in order to mess with it. Yet he does this in an undeniably charming way. Seo In Guk is scarily captivating as the charismatic Moo Young, especially when considering that his previous well known roles in Reply 1997 and Shopping King Louie have been mostly light hearted and

UKP MAGAZINE | WINTER 2018

good natured. With Moo Young, it’s unclear if what his nature is at all. A possible suspect for murder? A bored sociopath looking for people lives to ruin? Or just a boy with a tragic past who can remember things with high accuracy? The interplay between all these possibilities is what keeps Moo Young’s character fascinating all the way through. The audience needs to, in some way, root for the main character. Whilst their is apprehension in this, it adds enough tension and unease to a character that otherwise is enthralling on his own. The way in which he interacts with Baek Seung Ah (Seo Eun So) and Jang Woo Sung (Do Sang Woo) establishes this well, as what initially starts as a seemingly innocent relationship between Seung Ah and Moo Young evolves into something far more dark. This is a lead character with the power to bring out the worst in people, and to do so in a way that removes himself of blame. All the while, Seo In Guk portrays much of Moo Young’s hidden agendas through body language and the look in his eyes. The smile truly is not there in most scenes and it’s hauntingly well acted. It may come as a surprise, then,

that when romance eventually does blossom between our two leads, it does so with a great deal of intimacy and gentleness. The Smile Has Left Your Eyes decides not to start the possibility of a relationship. Far from it. Jin Kang meets Moo Young officially through her friend Seung Ah, whom Moo Young is dating. It’s a rocky start, one not defined by the usual hate to love relationship. There’s distrust initially on Jin Kang’s part. However, because of this what does develop feels much more genuine and adds another level of redemption for the main character. In all the lies, Moo Young’s feelings for Jin Kang seem to be the one truth. Jung So Min pitches this gradual thawing perfectly, never over acting her dislike or eventually attraction. When the attraction appears, it feels natural, which is a blessing when there is so much to second guess in the dramas narrative. The way in which the drama is filmed helps to add to both this natural feeling, and the suspense that runs throughout. It’s film aspect ratio and muted, almost blue hue filter really adds to the feeling that you aren’t watching a drama made

for TV, but a film shot for the cinema. Sure, it does give a sense of seriousness that wasn’t really needed but it’s inobtrusive enough that most watching will simply forget about it after a while. However, it does stand out on first appearance and it’s nice to see a little variation in how dramas are presented. Even the cinematography looks more filmic at times, with a greater depth of field and some interesting shot set ups. Overall, whilst it’s unclear yet whether The Smile Has Left Your Eyes will step out of it’s source materials shadow, or just how the episodes will end, it’s done enough thus far to really put viewers on the edge of their seats. It has elements of thrillers, crime, melodrama and romance that never outweigh one another enough to veer into over the top territory. The performances from the main trio have made it worth the watch and will no doubt carry the show all the way through to the end. If you’re looking for something to watch that tries something new and will keep you hooked without too much comedy or sweetness, then give it a try! 41

ACTRESS SPOTLIGHT

CHAE SOO BIN

42

The 94 liner obtained her first main role in the TV drama, “House of Bluebird” which was released in 2015. However, some of her most recognisable characters she has played is the antagonist, Kwon Soo Ah in “Sassy Go Go/Cheer Up”. The drama exemplified the main issues which occur in school life, from pressure in school, to mental illness and violence. The drama was one which emulates emotions of hate towards yet demonstrates her skill in playing the antagonist. In contrast, she has also been acknowledged in her role in “Love in the Moonlight” in 2016, where she played an innocent yet straightforward lady dealing with her unrequited love for the upcoming heir to the throne. By 2017, Chae Soo-Bin continuously landed a number of successful main roles. Following her previous historical drama, she became the main actress of the 2017 drama, “Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People”. When she was asked about starring in two consecutive historical dramas, she replied “the difference between the two dramas was that one was hot because it was shot in the summer, and the other was cold because it was shot in the winter,” she joked. For her outstanding performance, she was awarded the excellence award as an actress in a Monday-Tuesday drama

from the MBC Drama Awards. FUN FACT: Did you know Chae Soo-Bin sang for the “Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People” OST? Check out her OST release, “That’s Love”! Drifting away from historical dramas, she became involved in an actionpack drama known as “Strongest Deliveryman” in 2017, where she played a money-focused delivery employee, who’s ready to kick anyone who gets in her way. Her bold, and fearless character, brought humour to the audience as the drama became nominated for 3 different awards at the KBS Drama Awards 2017. However, one of our favourite dramas to date has to be her performance in “I’m Not A Robot”. The drama aired between 2017-18, where she is seen playing a robot for a man who has developed a severe allergy to other people. The romantic-comedy, whilst it did not perform well in audience ratings, was a favourable drama worldwide for K-Drama viewers. The hot-topic couple, Yoo Seung-Ho and Chae SooBin have been acknowledged for their cute interactions, which are to die for.

UKP MAGAZINE | WINTER 2018

There has been a number of phenomenal stars for this year’s share of Korean dramas, however one of the most notable actresses for this year would have to be Chae SooBin. She first became active in the Korean drama industry in the year 2014, with her acting debut in the film, “My Dictator”. However since then her popularity has grown. With her charismatic personality its no wonder she has become such a wellacknowledged figure to her fans.

As of recent, Chae Soo-Bin was announced in a new 2018 drama known as “Where Stars Land”. She plays a clumsy passenger services team member, who has a good heart and strives to do the right thing if it means breaking the rules to do so. In contrast, her co-star, Lee Je Hoon, plays quite the opposite. As a perfectionist and top-graduate student, he withholds a mysterious secret which distances him from forming interpersonal relationships. So where will the 24-year old venture next? What genre of drama would you like to see Chae Soo-Bin featured in? Let us know your thoughts below.

ANN AMARAWANSA

The 2018 London Korean Film Festival (1-14 November) introduced a diverse lineup of Korean films, ranging from gritty crime thrillers to light-hearted romantic comedies. We got the pleasure of attending a few screenings — check our reviews below!

PRINCESS AND THE MATCHMAKER (DIR.HONG CHANG-PYO, 2018)

As famine continues to ruin the country, the palace arranges Princess Songhwa’s (Shim Eun-Kyung) marriage in an effort to correct the cosmic misfortune. Renowned matchmaker, Do-Yoon (Lee Seung-gi) is recruited by the King to find the perfect suitor who will have the best marital harmony with the princess. From candidates all over the country, four prospective husbands with different astrological signs are shortlisted. Refusing to accept that her partner will be chosen solely based on fortune reading, she decides to check out the candidates herself before the final decision. However, it becomes clear that she soon finds herself falling in love with Do-Yoon instead. Packed with playful gags, this romantic-comedy is a guaranteed laugh. Eun-Kyung’s Princess Songhwa is the clear standout with an endearing charm that makes her naivety more loveable rather than frustrating. Following closely behind her is Jo Bok-Rae as Gae-Shi, Do-Yoon’s comical apprentice, who manages to steal a few laughs with some slapstick gags. As for the love story, there is certainly an undeniable chemistry between the two leads but the film’s several (unnecessary) subplots interrupt any sort of build up, making the romance ultimately fall flat. The film’s weakest moments come from its decision to squeeze in way too many characters with individual storylines; diluting the overall plot. The main villain is perhaps the weakest element of the story, as the film never explores his motivations and instead paints him as a one-dimensional character that serves no real purpose. The audience, as a result, begins to lose interest in the third act due to the needless flashbacks, characters and concepts, which prove to be more exhausting than entertaining. Overall, Princess and The Matchmaker makes for light viewing and an enjoyable watch, but the multiple plot-holes might leave you scratching your head by the end.

(DIR. KIM DAE-WOONG, 2018)

HEART BLACKENED (DIR.JUNG JI-WOO, 2017)

A remake of the Chinese film, Silent Witness (2013), Heart Blackened follows Tae-san (Choi Min-Sik) a business tycoon whose famous wife tragically dies. Soon after, his daughter becomes the prime suspect in the case and Tae-san puts himself through extreme lengths to prove her innocence and find the true culprit. The film is an enthralling, twisting ride that keeps its audience on the edge of their seat. While the pacing slows down within the second act, momentarily settling into a courtroom drama, the film launches into a twist for its final scenes which reveal that our main character is not all that he seems. It goes without being said that Choi Min-Sik brings his powerhouse chops to the table. As Tae-san he delivers a remarkably nuanced performance. We are never really sure what lurks beneath the cool facade, at least not until the end — but that lingers too far into spoiler territory. Other key cast members include Park Shin-hye, as the lawyer TaeSan hires and Park Hae-joon as her rival prosecutor. The film tries to force a former romance between Shin-hye and Park Haejoon, which only detracts from the story and comes across as unnecessary detail.

This light-hearted comedy tells a tale of father and son, with an amusing twist on the love triangle trope. Gui-bo (Yoo Haejin) has dedicated his life to ensuring his son Sung-woong (Kim Min-jae) becomes a national-level wrestler. Unfortunately, Sung-woong doesn’t share his father’s interest for wrestling in the slightest. Their relationship is put to the test when Sung-woon’s life-long crush Ga-yeong (Lee Sung-kyung) confesses her feelings for his father instead.

UKP MAGAZINE | WINTER 2018

LOVE + SLING

Initial goofiness aside, Love + Sling turns out to be a really good self-discovery story, where the characters come to find their individual paths towards happiness amidst all the drama. The wrestling element of the film can almost be seen as a metaphor, as both leading characters are “pinned down” in a co-dependent relationship that is preventing them both from finding their own happiness — a refreshing take on the genre. The three main leads manage to sell this bizarre storyline by giving nuanced and emotional reactions to typical situation comedy tropes, making it far more engaging. Hae-Jin and Min-Jae give solid performances as a father and son struggling with their filial responsibilities. Love + Sling is an easy watch with its straightforward storyline and amusing characters. If you’re able to look beyond the slightly odd comedic moments in the film, then it’s worth a watch.

Heart Blackened makes for an interesting watch, particularly as its twists come as a genuine surprise. It’s a well-crafted story, with complex characters, that completely operates within the grey area.

AN INTERVIEW WITH

JOAN KIM Korean-American YouTuber, Joan Kim, stopped in London recently. Famous for her ’Joanday’ travel vlogs in Korea, she collaborated with Inspire Me Korea for her first official London Meet and Greet. We were fortunate to get an exclusive interview with her at her Meet and Greet with Inspire Me Korea!

Congratulations on your Joanday and night cream. Could you tell us more about the experience making the cream, and what the cream means to you? “Creating the cream has been a journey. I‘ve spoken more about it in detail in one of my YouTube videos, but in short, a lot of work went into it. My friend, Erin, is in the group so we were able to stay professional and personal at the same time. It did take a while to make the product, but I’m happy with the result. The cream is like my baby. After Joanday, of course. I want people to use it and have a good day and night. Have a Joanday and night – that sort of meaning.”

46

You travelled to London for the Meet and Greet. What’s been your favourite moment so far? Inspire Me Korea organised the event, as well as the VIP Lunch at Yori London and Bingsoo Afternoon Tea at Cake and Bingsoo in New Malden. How did you find it?

“I love how this Meet and Greet has been intimate. In East Asia, there’s a timer for each person, so there isn’t a lot of time to talk to my subscribers. Here, I’ve had the opportunity to be more up and personal with everyone. So this experience is very special to me. As for yesterday, I don’t like to eat too much at Meet and Greets. I also get nervous. But the food was good. I enjoyed being able to meet my subscribers and enjoy lunch and afternoon tea together. Though, I would like to eat more European food in the future. That’s what I always tell Diana!” (CEO, Inspire Me Korea)

Diana and Alice, the co-founding sisters of Inspire Me Korea, also gave you the opportunity to curate your own boxes for the event. How did you find the experience, and did the girls give you any advice? “No, they trusted me a hundred per cent. I wanted the boxes to be good, so that they’d be worth a hundred dollars. I didn’t have a specific plan for each one. As you see in the vlog, I picked

Each box is different. The only common product is my Joanday and night cream. Since I worked on it all year, including it was a must.”

You‘ve made a name for yourself on YouTube with your travel vlogs in Korea, but you’ve also travelled to many countries. Do you have a favourite country that you’ve been to? “That’s difficult. I love every country that I’ve been to. Of course, I love Korea and America. Malaysia was special because it was my first fan meeting abroad. I also love travelling to Europe because it reminds me of when I travelled here with my friends. I can’t really say I have a favourite.”

How about somewhere you haven’t been to before but you’d like to? “I‘ve never been to Greece or Australia. Also, the Philippines – many subscribers ask me to visit the country and I’m waiting for that opportunity. I hope I have a chance to do so in the future. Maybe for the cream launch.”

Let’s hope so! Could you recommend a must-have item that UKP readers should to take to South Korea? “I don’t think you have to take anything specific because it’s all there. However, I would recommend that while they’re in Korea, they make the most of K-Beauty products. There’s a huge range of products – some more affordable, others more high-end. There’s something for everyone! And sheet masks especially! You can get great deals, so it’s best to stock up on them while you’re there.”

That‘s something to look forward to! On your channel, cafes have become your signature vlogging space. Are there any you would recommend to UKP readers?

“Mmm Records, for sure! Also, I’d recommend Ikseon-dong itself. There are loads of cafes there that you’d need to try.”

Since you’re always travelling, what’s currently on your travel playlist? “It‘s always changing. Right now, I’m listening to a lot of Frank Sinatra. These are probably more basic but – Jennie’s SOLO, Ariana Grande’s Thank You, Next, Crush’s Lay Your Head On Me. I went to his concert when I was in Chicago and I love his voice. And of course, Ladies Code’s The Last Holiday is also on my playlist. Ashley is a good friend of mine.”

What’s next for Joan Kim? “I don’t have a set plan for the future. The only thing that’s certain is Joanday Season 3, and figuring out what to do with my main channel. Ideally, I’d also like to work on lipsticks but I’m not too sure yet.”

UKP MAGAZINE | WINTER 2018

up whatever I thought would be nice to include. I also have a shelf of products at home, so I used them to fill up the gaps.

I wanted the boxes to be good, so that they’d be worth a hundred dollars.

How about any personal goals? “For personal goals, I don’t like to think too much about it. Joanday has changed me as a person. I used to focus a lot on planning, but I realised I get discouraged if I didn’t achieve those goals. So now, I try to have realistic aims. I mentioned in the talk that I’d like to work on relaxing more in 2019, but that’s something.”

Of course, as much as you travel you need rest. Lastly, do you have a message for UKP readers? “It’s great to be in London again. I’d love to come back! I hope you guys get to visit Korea in the future and enjoy the culture, the language and the pop-culture.. My tip would be that there’s more to the country than Seoul. So make a trip outside of Seoul, and definitely visit Jeonju. That’s my favourite cultural spot.” Thank you, Joan! We hope you enjoyed your stay in London! You can subscribe to both Joan’s main channel and Joanday channel.

A UKP TIP If you do plan to travel to Korea soon, check out Inspire Me Korea’s Secret Travel Guide to South Korea! Thank you to Inspire Me Korea for giving us the opportunity to interview Joan!

T

he idea of KPOP being fake or manufactured isn’t anything new. It’s an idea that has been around for almost as long as the industry has - a sticky, pervasive label that’s hard to do away with. To start with the bottom line: KPOP is manufactured, and to a large extent it can also be fake. Former-JBJ member and Produce 101 Season 2 contestant, Kim Yongguk’s recent controversy is testament to that. His private Instagram was littered with damning snippets of the degrading, mocking, and sexist way he spoke of others. That includes strangers on the other side of a game console, his former bandmates, and his fans. That last note struck a particularly sour note amongst general KPOP fans who, at the beginning of 2017, were reeling from former-BOYS24 member Hwayoung’s scandal. He, in leaked audio, also harshly insulted his fans. KPOP idols sell an image. That image is often of politeness, kindness, even deference to and with their fans. Ask any KPOP stan. Most would tell you about their idol’s kindness, their humble nature, how much they care for their fans. So who’s lying? Is anyone? That image is what attracts fans to idols, in addition to obvious things like visuals and music and talent. But it’s also the first thing to be pointed out as fake or manufactured when scandals like Yongguk’s and Hwayoung’s break out. This is where the thread stretches thin. SM Entertainment’s EXO undeniably have the image of courteous, charitable, and humble idols. But it doesn’t make their charity, both in money and time, less valuable or genuine.

48

Sehun spent Children’s Day volunteering at an orphanage, while Lay single-handedly set up a scholarship fund in 2015. They, amongst other members including Chen, Kai, and Suho, have been known to donate money frequently and quietly - without expectation of pomp. An image of an idol only works, longterm, because it’s an exaggeration or amplification of their best or most attractive qualities. It doesn’t mean that it’s inherently fake. After all, most of us present a more polished version of ourselves at work or at school too. So why do we view it negatively here? Partly, it’s because many idols already have so little control. But regardless of how little control an idol has over their career or image, that idol doesn’t ever stop being human. In my opinion, the most damaging issue with this ‘manufactured’ argument is that it leaks far too often into casual dehumanisation. That, in turn, causes both fans and antis to lose sight of the right and wrong ways to address someone, their mistakes, and their character flaws. Most importantly for KPOP, as an industry, it strips away the significant development and growth of many idols as influencers and artists. Girl’s Day, for example, debuted in 2010 with ‘Tilt My Head’ - the very kind of sugary, overlyprocessed music that’s criticised as stereotypically KPOP. Their colour-coordinated outfits were loud and brash, their hair styled in stiff wigs: a cohesive, alienating look. Among KPOP fans, it’s still heralded as one of the worst debuts ever. Fast forward a few odd years and not only has their sound matured

and grown, but their individualism as idols has grown to be respected too. From Sojin - a power vocalist and songwriter with a degree in mechanical engineering, to Hyeri - an established actress in her own right. Groups, who are often generalised into extreme ends of the spectrum - cute concept, ‘hip hop’ concept, or sexy concept - have incredible nuances between them. The MAMAMOO sexy is not the same type as EXID’s sexy. And neither of them are the same type of sexy as Laysha. Similarly, the cute concept that EXO has done in songs like ‘Peter Pan,’ is not the same as Monsta X’s ‘Amen,’ or ASTRO’s ‘Hide & Seek’. Speaking to Forbes Magazine earlier this year, GOT7 showed a characteristic sensitivity to the perception of KPOP. “I understand that people see it as factory made or cookie cutter,” Jinyoung says. “I’m kind of curious if people will still say that now because there are so many groups right now that are producing their own music.” While leader JB, himself an idol and producer, notes, “Even if [idols] are being instructed to be a certain way they are trying their hardest and putting in their best efforts [...] even if an artist doesn’t make their own songs they’re becoming the vessel for the music that someone else has made, and there’s a lot of effort and time that goes into that, which itself is art.” It’s entirely possible to scrutinise the KPOP industry, how overly controlling and manufactured it can be, without leaking that negativity to the idols who we depend on for entertainment. We’re taking baby steps towards that, but still, we’ve got a long way to go.

cookie-cutter idols how manufactured is kpop ? By Tania Tavares-Pinto

PATRICK SO FAN TALENT Patrick has been avid contributor to the K-Pop community in the UK as of recent years. Since attending university in London, he has accomplished various K-Pop dances along with his group, GIRLOS as well as becoming a recent addition of the new sub-unit, UJJN Boys, from UJJN. He has also featured in dance covers as part of the Saders Dance Family. Not only can he dance, but he can also sing and recently was announced as the overall winner for the K-Pop UK National Competition.

50

I’m Patrick So, and I am 23 years old from Hong Kong. I recently finished a master’s degree at Kings College London.

How did you become interested in K-Pop and how has that inspired you to start dancing? I became interested in K-Pop approximately 7-8 years through my close friends. Not longer after, I became self-teaching myself K-Pop choreography with my friends. Later, when I was studying at UCL, doing my bachelor’s degree, I joined the Dance Society and started doing hip-hop and street dance as well.

What has been your favourite dance to do so far? Do you have any recommendations to refer to? I love most choreographies for Dreamcatcher’s songs, especially Chase Me and Fly High.

If you had any top tips on how you go about improving dancing, what would you say? I don’t think I’m the best person to ask, but what I would do is play the music or just count with beats. I would complete each move by looking at the mirror and attempt to adjust the way (particularly the angle) I complete the moves. Also, listening to the music is really important as I think dancing gets much easier If you’re familiar with the song. E.g. knowing when the beat is going to drop/ hit.

You’ve recently won the overall winner prize at the K-Pop UK National Competition in Kingston; how did that feel? It’s still unbelievable! I still remember being really happy already with the fact I

got into the final stage of the competition since I have never participated in a K-Pop cover competition before. I’m so thankful to have met all the people who supported me all the way.

Being originally based in HK, was it difficult to adjust to the UK culture? The cultural difference took me some time to adjust at first, but it wasn’t too bad since London was basically as busy as Hong Kong.

You’ve recently been announced as a member of UJJN boys, how did you get involved? The London K-Pop cover community is actually not that big so we actually knew of each other but never talked to each other properly. I think I got to know UJJN more through Sunny (SJ Han).

If someone was to start completing K-Pop dance covers, where would you suggest them start off? Since not many people can learn from just watching videos, there are people who make tutorials for others. I’d definitely recommend it as it is a good way to start learning K-Pop choreography. If not, there are also dance studios or organisations, like LoKo (London K-Pop Workshops), which hold K-Pop classes regularly. This is another good way to start as well!

We’ve also heard you can sing, what is your all-time favourite song to sing? I don’t think I have one as it changes time to time. For now it’s WJSN’s ‘Save Me Save You’ and IZ*ONE’s ‘La Vie En Rose’ are my favourite songs at the moment. If I really have to pick one, then it would be Davichi’s ‘행복해서 미안해 (Sorry, I’m Happy)’.

How do you overcome performing on stage, or in front of a camera? I had quite a lot of dance performances/ competitions when I was in UCL’s Dance Society, so I think all those experiences helped me overcome stage fright. Confidence is also very important. If you are well-prepared of something, you shouldn’t be scared! You should be confident and show everyone what you’ve got!

UKP MAGAZINE | WINTER 2018

So, could you please introduce yourself to our UKP readers?

What has been the most difficult choreography to do so far? For girl groups, I think Dreamcatcher has a few of the hardest dances because of the speed and tight choreography of their songs. For boy groups, I think most of their choreographies are quite hard in the sense they require you to be in-sync like BTS and Seventeen. Their moves are normally harder and require more/better isolations.

If you could give any words of inspiration to our UKP readers interested in dancing, what would you say? I would say don’t give up and keep practicing!! Dancing in general is not something you can accomplish perfectly within a short period of time (there are always exceptional cases). Just keep practicing and we should be able to get to the level we want!

WHO WORE IT BETTER? SUZY vs GYMAST SON YEON JAE

Here we have JYP’s Suzy and Gymnast Son Yeon Jae both sporting the same poofy, pastel skirt. Suzy has a more casual look, pairing it with red flats and a tshirt, whereas Son Yeon Jae is sporting a more refined look. The Winner: Son Yeon Jae I have to say that Son Yae Jae’s styling is better suited to the skirt. I prefer her pairing of pink ballet pumps as opposed to Suzy’s red shoes. However, I do think she should ditch those yellow marigold gloves!

GUGUDAN’S SE JEONG vs CHAE YEONG Would you believe this blue dress with a cherry pattern actually costs a whopping $180?! Still, both these ladies are looking great in this dress as they enjoy the summer sun. Gugudan’s Se Jeong has gone for a cooler style, adding some red earrings and a necklace. Typically for TWICE though, Cha Young has gone for a cute and pretty look – adding beaded earrings and pinning a flower in her hair. The Winner: Chae Yeong I think the award goes to Chae Young for this one. She has rolled with the quirkiness of the dress and really embraced the fresh feel of the print with her casual summer style.

54

Now, this is a true clash of the titans – EXO and BTS! Both EXO’s Kai and Jin are looking very dapper and handsome in this Gucci suit. Look closely and you will see a cute bumble bee print. The Winner: Jin Though Kai does look great; I prefer the more snug fit that the suit has on Jin. I also prefer his more dressed up version (with shirt and tie). In my humble opinion, if you are going to wear a suit, go all the way and dress it up formally.

UKP MAGAZINE | WINTER 2018

EXO’s KAI vs BTS’s JIN

V and JIMIN vs KYLIE JENNER AND KIM KARDASIAN Now, I bet this is a battle you thought you would never see! BTS vs. the Kardashians! This Calvin Klein denim number has been sported by both. It’s certainly a strange piece that manages to be both casual and quite smart at the same time. The Winner: Kylie and Kim As much as it pains me (and it REALLY pains me because I cannot stand the Kardashian/ Jenners), I have to give this one to Kylie and Kim. I think this piece is just better suited to a woman’s physique and it flatters their shape more. Perhaps it is also just because I don’t really like the outfit in the first place!

We take tips from two of the biggest names in KPOP on how to put a little bit of spark in your winter wardrobe. Winter is finally upon us. It’s cold, it’s windy, sometimes it’s rainy. Mostly we’re insulating ourselves in big coats, thick scarves, and sturdy shoes whenever we’re outside.

On stage, and in their music videos, they’ve been bringing out two brilliant displays of cheerful femininity edged with touches of casual grunge and accessories that will become huge trends rolling into 2019.

For idols, however, summer seems to be an evergreen concept. This season, two of the biggest names in the female side of the KPOP industry, IU and Twice, have been going toe to toe on the charts.

The 90’s trend has been huge in k-pop this year. In particular, the coordinated plaid outfits of Cher Horowitz in the 1995 movie ‘Clueless’ has inspired the outfits of everyone from LOONA to Red Velvet. Needless to say, plaid and tartan are definitely in. It has been a mega feature of Twice’s wardrobe throughout all of the ‘Yes or Yes’ era. They kicked the trend up a notch by pairing half-and-half tartan skirts with thick-soled work boots and tall socks. It wouldn’t be Twice without a bit of romanticism. Their look 56

is softened by peachy-pink makeup, coloured contacts, sparkly accents, and loose, bouncy hair. Like Tzuyu, you can dive right in to the tinsel hair trend, by weaving strands of glittery extensions into your hair. Or, like Jeongyeon, you can rock a patterned denim jacket over a black layered ensemble. Top off the look with boxy overcoats and slouchy cardigans. Shape is important - from the frill of your skirt’s pleats to the puffed roundness of your outer-layers. Just make sure it’s not too frosty outside!

UKP MAGAZINE | WINTER 2018

Sparkle Tweed Skirt, £12 Women’s Patchwork Casual Pleated Skirt, £13.48 - £16.87 Sketchers Pilot Utility Boots, $41.26 $89.99 Patterned Denim Jacket, £14.00 Hairdazzle Glitter strands, £14.99

IU also leans heavily on retro trends for her comeback with ‘Bbi Bbi’. She takes a hardier, simplistic approach to her ensembles.

Biancoghiaccio Blouse (Yellow), £38

Less Cher Horowitz and more Joss Stone. Instead of weaving glitter into her hair, she wraps thick cords of rope in solid purples and oranges.

Dress with broderie anglaise, £15

For this look, swap out a printed denim jacket for a dark indigo classic, close-fitted, sleeves rolled up. Instead of black boots, opt for plain white sneakers paired with longer dresses and hair pulled loosely away from the face.

Lolothreads Banana Knot Headband, £6.02

White & Silver Sneaky Trainers, £30 Feral flirt leopard beret, $12

Yellow is a prominent colour and motif throughout IU’s music video. To incorporate this into your wardrobe, don’t be afraid of the loud, happy yellows this winter. Canary, sunshine, and even mustard hues work. So rock it loud and proud. It’s all about keeping coordination, but casually, like you almost didn’t try. Finish off the look with some sleek berets and headbands and you’re out the door. But don’t forget your yellow card! 57

UKP MAGAZINE / WINTER 2015 REAL LIFE

ETUDE HOUSE Collagen Eye Patch

PRODUCT REVIEW I am someone who is afflicted with a horrible curse – the curse of permanent bags under the eyes! No matter how much sleep I get or how well-rested I am, the eye bags remain. Whenever I do get less sleep, they simply get deeper and darker. So, when I came across the ETUDE HOUSE Collagen Eye Patch, I thought I had found the perfect product for me! The product comes as a small, thin packet with a slightly creepy doll-like face on the front. Within that are two, wet patches inside a plastic case. You are instructed to place the patches under your eyes and leave them there for 15-20 minutes.

58

UKP MAGAZINE | WINTER 2018

PAGE 34

GOOD: - The patches are quite wide, so they will likely fit on a range of eye and face shapes. - They are very quick and easy to use. Not overly fiddly like some of these products can be. - They give the feel quite like that of putting cucumbers on your eyes – instantly refreshing! BAD: - It’s fairly easy to get the liquid in your eyes given the close proximity of the patches and their moistness, so you have to be quite careful when applying them! - Though they do stick well to your eyes, you do have to be careful in ensuring they stay there. The patches went slightly over my nose, so they weren’t completely flush with my face until I patted them down. Of course, you should also keep your face movement to a minimum while wearing them to avoid any unsticking or slippage. - From what I have seen, a pair of patches costs about £1 each. Pretty expensive! But if you factor in a possible cost of import, it’s not too bad, I suppose… I didn’t get a miracle from these eye patches, my eye bags were indeed still there. However, the area did feel a bit firmer and refreshed. Perhaps, after a few more uses, a more visible benefit will come. I recommend these patches for anyone that likes to pamper themselves. Having these on underneath your eyes encourages you to lie back for a while with your eyes closed. I think they are great to help you de-stress and have the potential to make a positive difference to your under-eyes. However, nothing can substitute a good night’s sleep, obviously! 59
