Hello! I still can’t believe is September already. Where did the year go? I guess time flies by when your surrounded by great friends and your doing what you love to you. Thank you to the wonderful QSacMagazine team for this amazing edition of QSac. It really wouldn’t have been possible with out the stylings and fashions found at Denim Spot Boutique in Midtown Sacramento. Pete and his team did a great job putting together the looks for our model Jose Mayorga. Last month we had our very first model casting call. We had several amazing, handsome guys come around and you’ll be seeing some of them on the covers of QSac in the coming months so watch out for the new talent we are bringing to you. Sacramento Red Dress Party is this month! So be sure to attend, it’s such a great event and it’s for such a great cause. The money raised is to create awareness for HIV research. HIV is still an epidemic specially among our LGBT youth. Just because people can live longer and we have found ways to control the infection it doesn’t mean we can’t still strive to find a cure and who knows maybe a vaccine at some point. Looking ahead we have two more editions this year. Next month we’ll release our BEAR edition of QSac just in time for Halloween. And in November we’ll be releasing our Holiday edition which will be a double edition so be on the look out for those coming soon to you. In January our list of Sacramento’s Q20 will be release. This list is compiled through nominations that range from best DJ to best Drag queen to best activist in our Sacramento community. So please go and nominate starting TODAY at www.QSacramento.com/20 the nominees will be announced next month, after which you can vote for your favorites and on our January edition of QSac you’ll be able to read all about them! Until then, please I hope you enjoy this edition of QSacMagazine and don’t forget to visit our website if you missed an edition, you can get caught up and follow us on Facebook and Instagram. Have a LOVELY, SAFE and HAPPY Month!

If you haven’t noticed, the gayborhood just got a new eatery, Pizzeria Urbano. Located in the middle of the M.A.R.R.S. Building,

Pizzeria Urbano spurned from the owners of Azul Mexican Food & Tequila Bar as they took over the location formerly inhabited by Luigi’s. If you haven’t checked it out yet, once you do, you’ll find that it is drastically different then it’s predecessor. With an artsy decor makeover, a great staff that picks up after you as if you’re in a traditional restaurant, and a gourmet selection of pizzas by the slice, it offers a refreshing experience for quick bite at lunch, a fun dinner option, and a tasty way to allow the alcohol to dissipate from a night of drinking. We had the opportunity to sit down with 1 of the owners, Carlos, to get the inside scoop on the place and find out some of their other selections. Q. How/Why did you choose the name Pizzeria Urbano? C. We were looking for a name that described what we’re offering to diversity group that makes up midtown. Q. Is it different then the typical pizza joint? C. Yes. You can order by the slice or whole pizza. There will be seasonal changes to the menu, as we are only using fresh ingredients. We also offer an assortment of salads. Q. I’ve seen some unusual ingredients not normally associated with pizzas. What are some of the pizza options? C. Kale & Sausage Pizza(a QSac fav), Roasted Mushrooms Pizza, and Pear & Gorgonzola Pizza. Q. The previous place was known for having some good happy hour specials. Will you feature some as well? C. Definitely! Q. Do you offer alcohol? C. Yes, Beer and Wine. Q. Are you offering extended/late hours on Friday and Saturdays? C. Yes, we will be open until 2:30am

Make sure to check them and their great priced pizza options out. You won’t be disappointed.

There are few names in American politics that reverberate through the public conscious quite like that of Hillary Clinton’s. Established attorney, First Lady of Arkansas and then the United States, junior US Senator for the state of New York and most recently Secretary of State under the first term of the Obama Administration, Hillary Clinton has name recognition beyond any other public politician in our country (with perhaps exception to her husband, former President Bill Clinton). In the 2008 presidential primaries, Hillary Clinton was a trailblazer. She became the nation’s first major female presidential contender, very nearly taking the Democratic nomination from eventual winner Barack Obama. She was also the very first First Lady to run for the presidency, and inspired millions of women to get involved in what has long been called “the boy’s game.” Her nomination battle against now-President Obama was one for the history books that ultimately culminated in a close friendship between the two powerhouses that remains to this day. Recently, speculation has been swirling around whether Hillary has it in her to try once again for the White House in 2016. Remaining mum on her decisions for now (Clinton has been quoted as saying “I will look carefully at what I think I can do and make that decision sometime next year”), Hillary Clinton’s potential candidacy has spurred a grassroots movement encouraging the former Secretary of State to run once again.

One such group, Ready for Hillary, has been rallying the troops and getting activists excited about 2016 using events across the country. Founded by supporters and a few former staffers from Clinton’s 2008 run, Ready for Hillary’s objective is to raise awareness and gather support in the event that Secretary Clinton does decide to step into the political arena once more in a run for the presidency. The early show of support translate into massive political power, helping encourage more support down the line as well as discouraging wouldbe contenders from joining the fray. One of Ready for Hillary’s now-famous grassroots events occurred in Sacramento on August 12th at KBar, one of the city’s newest bars in the soon-to-be revitalized K street district. Headlining the event was a long-time Clinton supporter, former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm. Currently a professor at UC Berkeley, Granholm stopped by the filledto-capacity event to address over 200 Ready for Hillary supporters. Climbing on top of one of the bar’s counter-height tables alongside Sacramento native and State Senate President Pro-Tem Darrell Steinberg, Granholm gave a fiery speech in support of a potential Hillary candidacy. Amongst the cheers of the crowd, Granholm, long rumored to be a potential Hillary Clinton administration cabinet pick, shouted “The time is NOW to break that final glass ceiling… we need Hillary Clinton in the White House making the change our country needs!” Not everyone in attendance, however, was there to cheer Clinton and Granholm on. Approximately 10 protesters from the Sacramento State College Republicans came wielding handmade signs and shouting out chants stood outside of

KBar in an attempt to get noticed. One of the students, David Morgan, explained “This great nation cannot afford another progressive liberal. As we approach the end of the disastrous years under the Obama administration it is time for some real change.” Despite the small group outside, interest was high in what was going on inside. Sarah, a new Sacramento resident by way of Chicago, was caught walking by on her way home from work. Peering in to see Granholm, she asked what the event was for. “I think it’s great to see so many people, of all ages, engaged in the political process! It’s a bit of a testament as to how powerful Hillary’s appeal is across the board.” Inside, Clif Roberts was one of the many in attendance who came to show their outright support of Hillary Clinton. “Secretary Clinton’s leadership and intuitiveness on the issues make her the clear choice for the Presidency in 2016. This event just shows how excited people are for her to get out there and put this country on track. I’m a big supporter, and it’s great to be involved at the ground floor of this movement.” The young and young-at-heart alike filled the room. Co-hosts of the event ranged from federal & statewide leaders to CA legislative titans to local council members as well as ardent Hillary supporters such as Claire Conlon, John Vigna, Lindsey Nitta, and in the interest of full disclosure, this columnist. Like Clif, the room was filled with excitement and eagerness to show support. One event co-host was Mariko Yamada, a CA state legislator retiring from the Assembly this year. Yamada said “Hillary Clinton is the most well-prepared possible Presidential candidate we’ve seen in years. She’s smart, seasoned, tough, and tested--and she knows the White House inside and out!” This Sacramento event broke a few West Coast records for the Ready for Hillary PAC. By the end of the night, an advisor to the PAC announced to the group that Sacramento had raised more money than their San Francisco event and had more people in attendance than their inaugural Los Angeles soiree. Sacramento truly proved that is was Ready for Hillary, and encouragement like that will play a factor in the former

Secretary of State’s decision making process. It’s hard to deny the appeal of Hillary Clinton. As with any political figure, there are detractors, but there’s no doubt that there are millions awaiting her next move with baited breath. Be sure to stay tuned in the following months. The Ready for Hillary PAC is already in talks to return to Sacramento with an LGBT-themed event, and many more similar parties will be springing up around the country for the rest of 2014.

j

ason Walker hit the national spotlight with a winning performance on American TV’s It’s Show Time at the Apollo. Soon afterward, Junior Vasquez signed him to his label where they released two dance albums, “This Is My Life” and “Flexible”. From their collaboration, Walker amassed three Top 10 Billboard hits and was nominated Best Breakthrough Dance Artist at the prestigious International Dance Music Awards. Four years ago, he set out on his own, releasing his third album “Leave It All Behind”. It, too, climbed the Billboard chart, landing at #15. Walker followed it with his “Live and Unplugged, the 6th Ave. Sessions” album. Then, he collaborated with C-Rod on two club singles “Raise Your Hands” and “Beat Don’t Stop”, his eighth and ninth Billboard charting dance records. Tell It To My Heart marks Jason Walker’s first collaboration with Bimbo Jones. It combines Hi-NRG, freestyle and EDM elements, resulting in a sound that has the potential to forge a new path in club music – just as the original version did in 1987.

Were you intimidated to take on “Tell It To My Heart”? Well, yes! Who wouldn’t be? I love the song and I love Taylor Dayne. I mean, who doesn’t? They’re both classics. What made you decide to record it? This was all Bill Coleman’s brainchild. Bill is the owner of the Peace Bisquit dance label and the manager of the great Ultra Nate, Chris Willis, and Cazwell. I’ve always wanted to work with him. When he suggested I cover the track, I jumped at the chance. How does your version compare to the original? I would never say it’s better or even near it. Taylor Dayne is a beast of a singer! One of my all time faves. I think it’s just a new take on a classic. Bimbo Jones (the producers) and the other remixers really nailed it! What did you do to put your special Jason Walker stamp on the track? (Laughing) I never kiss and tell. That’s a tough one. I don’t know really. I just sang it like me, if that makes any sense. What other diva track would you like to tackle? I’ve always wanted to do a new version of “Where Love Lives” by Alison Limerick, but I don’t know if it will ever happen. We’ll see. I thought for sure you’d name a Kristine W song. You’ve been very vocal about your love for her. I already recorded one of Kristine’s songs. I did “No More” on my first album with Junior Vasquez called “This Is My Life”. It was a real high for me! Since then, Kristine and I have been on the same bills together and I’ve done some backing vocals for her.

What do you love best about Kristine W? There’s no one best thing. It’s just her. Everything about her. Do you remember the first time you met her? I do! Kristine may not remember this, but I met her shortly after I moved to New York City in 2002. I was so new to the city. She was performing with Junior (Vasquez) at Exit and it was the first time that I had ever seen him live. Up until that point, I only had their music on cds but never actually experienced them in person. So I went to Exit at 8 AM and stood right up front and almost peed my pants. It was surreal. After the show, I snuck backstage and was able to say a quick “Hello” and “I love you” to Kristine and that was it. It was real quick but I’ll never forget it! If you had to choose between Kristine W and Taylor Dayne, who would you choose? (Laughing) Next question! What’s next? Well, promo for “Tell It To My Heart” is just getting underway so I’ll be performing a lot of shows throughout the US and hopefully Europe soon! I’ve got some new music brewing with Tony Moran that I’m really excited about. And I’m finally wrapping up my next album of “soul-inspired” music. So lots happening! It’s good to be busy! S

acramento has always been known for it’s gold rush era. Yet in late 2011 one young entertainer began her journey to make Sacramento synonymous with Diamonds.

Adriana Diamond is the creation of Jose Nikko Granados who as a young boy always dreamed of being an entertainer. “I used to perform for anyone and anytime” said Granados who admits her performances at times can be a little unorthodox. “I like to give it my all and then some every time I’m on stage” added Granados who has been known to perform with everything from backup dancers to flags to incorporating gymnastics into his performances. Granados sought to built a house of entertainers and naming it The House of Diamonds. He didn’t have to look very far for his first recruitment. Granados had been dating Sergio Garza for a few years who also performed in drag as Tatianna Lexani. Garza who himself had a lot of success performing, met Granados in Savanna Georgia. “We both didn’t know the other did drag” added Garza who initially was concerned about the reaction Granados would have once he would find out. “Once we both knew we both did drag, it was like, ok no big deal” admitted Garza. Together Adriana and Tatianna have performed in venues all across Georgia, Colorado and California to name a few. The House of Diamonds was formed once the couple arrived in Sacramento. Yet there was something missing. Enter Kenia Martinez, who is the creation of Ulises Arellano. Martinez launched into the Sacramento spotlight during the 2012 Miss Faces competition. Winning the runner-up title enabled Martinez to have weekly gigs in Sacramento’s largest and most established gay nightclub. In mid-2012 the three were separately booked in the Sunday Luis & Miguel Show. Co-host Luis Barrera asked the three to perform a musical number as a trio. Once the three hit the stage the sparks were undeniable. Soon after Kenia Martinez was reborn as Kenia Diamond. The three were regulars at Sunday’s The Luis Show and went on to host their own variety hour properly titled ‘The Diamond Showcase.” In June 2013 The trio was asked booked to performed at San Francisco Pride’s official Latin Stage. With several thousands of spectators watching, it was undeniable Granados dream of creating The House of Diamonds was finally realized. In late 2013, after the end of The Luis Show, the group , along with promoter Luis Barrera, headlined a three month residency at Havana Lounge where they proved once again that they were versatile enough to sell out other venues. Later that year the Diamonds were booked to take over the longest running eighteen and over club in northern California ‘Bojangles’ inside Sacramento’s Headhunters Lounge. Although successful at first Headhunters was eventually sold to Mangos Antro and along with the acquisition of the venue, the Bojangles nights ended. However as it always happens in show business when one door closes, another one opens. In Mid 2014 when Mangos Antro finally decided to open up their Sunday nights to the LGBT eighteen and over crowd they looked no further than the group that had previously been in charged of that night. The House of Diamonds were contracted to headline the new branded night called ‘Lollypop Nights’ inside the new Mangos Antro. The opening night of Lollypop brought a few hundredth guest and showcased what some people called “the best Diamond show to date.” Since it’s opening, Lollypop has grown week after week and most recently crowned it’s first very own Miss Lollypop 2014, Miss Jessica Monroe. With it The Diamonds have shown their unique view on the art of drag, which is to nurture new talent and along with creating a house built on sisterhood, which was Granados’ dream all along. While California will always be known for it’s gold-rush era, because of Jose Granados, Sergio Garza and Ulises Arellano the Sacramento drag scene will now forever be known for it’s House of Diamonds.

It’s Time sacramento!

Sept 27 @ Badlands

34

An expected 500 red dress-wearing guests will converge on Badlands Nightclub for Sacramento’s third annual Red Dress Party on September 27, 8 p.m.-2 a.m. The event raises awareness and funds for organizations that promote LGBT community health with a specific focus on preventing new HIV infections and supporting those who are affected by HIV/AIDS. The color red, found on the red ribbon worn on labels around the world, serves as a global symbol of HIV/AIDS awareness. That symbol is manifested the sea of red created by this event serves as a powerful statement of solidarity with people living with HIV/AIDS and also reminds us that we are all brought together for one night to raise awareness and funds to support a healthier community. While this is not a drag event, the required wearing of a red dress by all guests regardless of age, gender, or sexual orientation serves as a powerful symbol of solidarity with those living with HIV/AIDS and as a reminder that it is everyone’s responsibility to help end the epidemic. Sixty percent of youth ages 13-24 with HIV don’t know they are infected and young gay and bisexual men account for 72 percent of new infections. A hugely disproportionate number of these new infections are among homeless and marginalized youth who feel forced into situations where they are at grave risk of infection. “Regular testing, early treatment, and promoting safer sex practices are critical to reducing the spread of the disease, but it isn’t just about condom distribution and linkage to healthcare. These young people need to be supported with access to basic needs resources, a place where they can feel safe and welcome amongst peers, and encouragement to learn skills that enable them to make positive life choices that reduce their risk,” said David Heitstuman, Interim Executive Director of the Sacramento LGBT Community Center. “In just two years, this event has grown to nearly 500 people and contributed over $35,000 to local organizations. We are very excited, going into our third year, to be able to again support the Sacramento LGBT Community Center and Sunburst Projects with an event that people love to attend. It’s not the style, shade, or price of the dress that makes your Red Dress evening AMAZING, but the fun you have in it. You can come in full drag if you want, but you don’t HAVE to wear pumps or pearls, nails or nylons, you don’t even have to have your hair done up – you just have to wear a RED DRESS. Any shape, any size, any color – as long as it’s RED, will get you in the door.” This year international pop sensation Neon Hitch and San Francisco DJ Andrew Gibbons will headline the Sacramento Red Dress Party. The event will also feature live performances by a variety of local drag stars and character performers that will create an atmosphere of pure fun, dancing, and laughs in support of a good cause. Guests will be amazed at what’s included in this one of a kind experience.More information and tickets can be found at HYPERLINK “http://SacramentoRedDressParty. org/”SacramentoRedDressParty.org. Tickets are $50 for general admission or $90 for VIP. Advance purchase discounts are available from a variety of promotional partners. While the exact origins of The Red Dress Party are unknown Sacramento’s is modeled after those in Portland and Seattle. The earliest Portland event started out as a small band of committed supporters throwing a house party and has grown to a grand scale that today welcomes more than 2,000 attendees each year. Now in its third year in Sacramento, Red Dress continues to grow by leaps and bounds. The red dress network of parties now includes Chicago, Dallas, Palm Springs, and New Orleans
