PRIDE LEADERSHIP

New Leadership For A Changing Community According to recent census data, central Ohio is becoming increasingly more diverse. Our African American population has grown some 40 percent in the last decade and a half. The number of immigrants is on the rise. Columbus has a higher percentage of households occupied by same-sex couples than any other city in Ohio. Yet the composition of our leadership has failed to keep pace with the many changes in our population’s makeup. United Way of Central Ohio’s Pride Leadership program offers a solution to this issue by preparing members of the Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgendered (GLBT) community to serve in leadership roles on the boards of local nonprofit organizations.

Making A Place At The Board Room Table Pride Leadership provides lectures, hands-on workshops and other activities to help GLBT community members enhance their board leadership skills. The eight-month training curriculum includes monthly sessions of two to four hours in length. In addition, each of the program participants applies his/her learning from the workshops toward a community service project. Program participants not only gain knowledge and skills, but they also build confidence through Pride Leadership’s preparation for effective service. With training focused on organizational planning, leading through conflict, fundraising, fiscal management, parliamentary procedures and more, Pride Leadership prepares GLBT professionals to take a seat at board room tables across central Ohio.

LEADERSHIP The Results of Leadership Pride Leadership gives underrepresented communities a voice, diversifying all levels of the organizations they serve. The program increases the number of GLBT professionals who are qualified and well prepared to make decisions in our community. In 2008, Pride Leadership’s first year, the program graduated 11 participants. These future decision makers will address the challenges and help craft lasting change in our community – change that is relevant to everyone.

The need in our community • Franklin County is home to 17 percent of Ohio’s Gay and Lesbian couples. • According to the 2007 GLBT census, the GLBT community believes there is a lack of leadership within their community. • The number of diverse populations served by nonprofit organizations continues to increase.

You can make a difference. we hope to raise $50,000 to give GLBT professionals the tools necessary to expand their leadership skills and offer their perspectives in policy-making situations. If you believe, as we do, that the leadership of our community needs to reflect the diverse population of central Ohio, then please invest in United Way’s Pride Leadership initiative. We know that the GLBT community has tremendous, untapped leadership potential and deserves to have a greater role in decisions that are made in central Ohio. Your investment gives people the voice they need and the future they deserve. Join us. Invest your money, use your voice, volunteer your time to help give the GLBT population a greater voice in community leadership.
