When John gets his report card he isn’t hiding it anymore. In fact, he’s bragging about it. And he is not alone. John is one of hundreds of middle schoolers attending strong after-school and summer programs across our county. For the last three years, United Way’s Middle School Success Initiative has provided quality program and professional support to programs serving middle school youth in an effort to strengthen services so that kids like John will not only survive those awkward middle school years, but thrive.

EDUCATION
Tiana had never asked for help before, not like this. Her pregnancy had been hard and her baby was born with a number of medical problems. She and her husband had used up their savings when they learned their lease wouldn’t be renewed. Without money for deposits, she couldn’t see how they could avoid homelessness. One phone call to NC 2-1-1 got Tiana on the right track and, with help from several organizations they’ve found deposit money for a new apartment and assistance with emergency food.

WITH YOUR HELP, WE CAN DO MORE Each year, we receive funding requests totaling approximately $1 million more than we have money to invest. If we had more funds, thousands more people could be helped. Would you like to see United Way invest more resources in EDUCATION, INCOME AND HEALTH solutions this year?

Have you ever heard the saying, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure?” A number of programs United Way invests in each year are rooted in prevention. Thanks to one of these programs, Arnie was able to finally tackle his pre-diabetes diagnosis head on. He’s working out and taking classes on nutrition. He’s also met some great people who understand his struggle and need just as much encouragement as he does. He likes being able to get and give help as a part of the group.

Help starts here.
Our NC 2-1-1 staff don’t just stay in the office, waiting for people to call. They also take the time to head out into the community, attending service fairs and conducting trainings to ensure that as many people as possible know how we can help.
United Way thinks so. That’s why we run the NC 2-1-1 Asheville Call Center. When you need help or information for yourself, your family or someone you know all you need to do is dial 2-1-1 or visit nc211.org to get connected. Dial 2-1-1, it’s FREE, 24/7, and available in all languages.
When you choose to give to United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County’ Community Investment Fund, your gift (big or small) is combined with those of your neighbors and is used to fund our programs (on this page) and programs that apply to our competitive grant process. one place dedicated to increasing volunteers? United Way thinks so. That’s why we created Hands On Asheville-Buncombe. We work with nonprofits and schools to help them find and keep great volunteers. And we can help you find the best ways to give back - just visit handsonasheville.org to start your next volunteer adventure!
Last year, United Way volunteers sent a record 738 FULLY STOCKED BACKPACKS home with kids to start their school year right. The only way to do this is with help from people like you and great partners like the ones pictured here from Mission Health and Asheville Radio Group!

CONNECT WITH UNITED WAY OF ASHEVILLE AND BUNCOMBE COUNTY WEB UNITEDWAYABC.ORG
United Way thinks so. That’s why we started the Middle School Success Initiative. One of many exciting projects: partnering with Enka Middle and programs like the YMCA to create a Community School - bringing resources and programming to students and families in their own school setting.
As a result of our investments at Enka Middle, many new, FREE, after school clubs were formed. In one club, students knitted hats and later delivered them to Mission’s Cancer Center. Talk about a WIN-WIN! Cancer patients get lovingly made hats and the students learn a skill, experience the value of service, build friendships and have a safe place to be when school is out.

WOULDN’T IT BE GREAT IF SOMEONE WAS... working on the big picture?
WOULDN’T IT BE GREAT IF...
even more people joined in making our community strong? They are! Here are a few:
United Way thinks so. That’s why we are growing our advocacy efforts. Among other things, we’ve set aside funding for programs working to improve policies that impact their clients and our community - all in the areas of Education, Income and Health of course. Changes have been made to NC voter registration laws. United Way, in partnership with Beth HaTephila, Children First and the Buncombe County Board of Elections, held an educational forum. Nearly 100 people attended.
Asheville and Buncombe County Public Service employees showed off their mad cooking skills at their annual Chili Cook-Off to raise funds and awareness for United Way. Also pictured is the Paramount KIA hampster - who donated a car to give away at the end of campaign.
Some people are willing to do anything to raise money to improve the Education, Income and Health of their community. The leadership team at Eaton are great examples year after year. We can’t wait to see what they’ve got up their sleeves this year.
How do you Live United? Send your picture and story to info@unitedwayabc.org and we may just include it in our newsletter or on facebook.
