150 volunteers celebrated Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as a day of service. Projects included nosew fleece blankets, “adopt me” bandannas for shelter pets, math skills games for elementary students, and cards of encouragement for veterans and home-bound seniors.

Hands On partnered with Belk to celebrate the department store’s 125th anniversary. More than 96 Belk employees engaged in projects at Avery’s Creek and Oakley Elementary Schools in Asheville and Hazelwood Elementary in Waynesville. They assembled 13 picnic tables and 32 bookcases, built an outdoor classroom and created colorful art to brighten school walls.

Nearly 900 volunteers from 60 local businesses contributed more than 3,100 hours of volunteer time to complete 64 projects supporting nonprofits, schools, and public entities at the annual Day of Caring.

A record 738 fully-stocked backpacks were assembled and distributed to low-income elementary and middle school students so they could start the school year equipped to succeed! The most successful Back-to-School Supply Drive was made possible by Mission Hospital’s employee donations and “Stuff the Bus” events sponsored by Mix 96.5, The Asheville Tourists and Paramount Kia.
