Letter from the Chairman FRIENDS OF UNITED WAY, In the past few years, we’ve all felt the effect of the recent recession on our decision-making and our perception of what the future may hold –in other words, our “hope.” As unemployment rates continued to rise across the country, Oklahomans affected by this financial climate began to feel despair set in when faced with issues like not having enough money to pay their utility bills, feed their children, or mounting medical debt. Reduced federal funding to social services also cut deep into the economic safety nets for families resulting in increased rates of homelessness and hunger in our community. For many, “hope” was fading quickly. In spite of the challenging economy, the United Way of Central Oklahoma continued to be a catalyst of hope through its Partner Agencies. Together, the generosity and loyalty of its donors, volunteers and staff allowed us to add two new agencies and fund programs to feed, clothe and shelter struggling Central Oklahomans – and more. Your gift taught them how to be better parents, how to prepare nutritional meals, and trained them for a career. Your gift provided dental care and medical care to the uninsured and low-income citizens. Your gift educated the public on many relevant community issues, tutored children, helped the elderly find resources and provided related services addressing their needs. Your gift allowed us to invest in the well-being of our community, and we thank you. Moreover, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks for the opportunity to serve as Chairman of the Board. It’s been my privilege to partner with an organization that fulfills its vision with such integrity. You allowed me to gain a more intimate view of United Way of Central Oklahoma’s mission in action and how it truly does work. It’s my hope you will join me and continue working together for the common good of our community – to make it stronger, healthier and more compassionate. Sincerely,
Doug Stussi Love’s Country Stores & Travel Stops United Way of Central Oklahoma Board Chairman 2010-2012
Accountability United Way of Central Oklahoma is committed to transparency and accountability with your donations. We believe in the efficient and wise stewardship of your contributions to ensure funds are directed to programs that are proven to positively impact our community. We successfully raise the needed funds earmarked to qualified Partner Agencies. We ensure your contributions reach those who need it most through a dedicated team of approximately 200 donor volunteers from the community. This team spends over 5,000 hours reviewing all programs sponsored by our 62 Partner Agencies. Volunteers assess agency budgets, IRS 990s, and audits, as well as spend time at each agency to learn how their programs work and how they impact the well-being of our community. Following this extensive review, the volunteer team recommends funding levels to the Community Investment Committee. These recommendations are ultimately voted on by our Board of Directors. Once approved, United Way of Central Oklahoma distributes the funds to the designated Partner Agencies throughout the following year. United Way of Central Oklahoma continually exceeds the United Way Worldwide Standards of Excellence. We are committed to responsible stewardship, and are diligent in keeping our combined administrative and fundraising costs well below the national standard for non-profit organizations. Our Partner Agencies are held to the same high standard, and are reviewed annually by our volunteer led Community Investment process.
Our unique Community Investment system allows us to remain transparent and accountable, while allocating donations to our 62 Partner Agencies. Donors volunteer their time to make sure all facets of the system run smoothly and efficiently. This cycle ensures your contribution is invested in the best possible way.

Community Partnerships Although Oklahoma has been more fortunate than other states, the economic fallout from our country’s recession resulted in a reduction in assistance available to those Oklahomans who were already struggling to support themselves or their families. Too many children in central Oklahoma reaped the consequences of an unemployed parent, an imprisoned parent or no guardian at all, landing them “couch” homeless. Because families existed in environments of such financial instability, the negative results rippled throughout our schools systems, medical care networks and housing industry. We are thankful for the many ways our community came together to work for the common good - to “Live United.” United Way of Central Oklahoma relied on the partnership and generous support of individuals, businesses, and non-profit agencies to fund the programs which provided hopeful tomorrows not only for our most fragile citizens, but for all of us. AGENCY TRAININGS
SPECIAL DONATIONS
In response to these increasing needs, United Way of Central Oklahoma added two new agencies, Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) of Oklahoma County and Health Alliance for the Uninsured. These two newly qualified social service providers joined our ranks of Partner Agencies with programs funded by United Way of Central Oklahoma. And, our continued support for a pilot-program called ReMerge of Oklahoma County, has proven successful in lowering incarceration and recidivism rates for non-violent female offenders; keeping mothers with their children.
United Way of Central Oklahoma also provided a variety of free training opportunities to our Partner Agencies with the goal of improving services and building excellence. Training sessions included public speaking, strategic planning, and an introduction to succession planning. Over 35 Partner Agencies participated in the public speaking session, which was offered to better equip them for presentations to our community. The strategic planning session allowed the agencies to fine tune agency goals and objectives to support efficiency and achievement within their organizations; while the succession planning session offered agencies creative solutions.
In addition to funding community programs, organizations and area businesses often called upon United Way of Central Oklahoma to manage special donations. In December 2011, OGE Energy Corporation Foundation was one such organization, donating $250,000 in gift cards to its customers within its service area. United Way agencies distributed the gift cards, which allowed family, friends or organizations to provide help to customers who were having difficulty paying their utility bills. The distributed gift cards brought current more than 1,300 past due OG&E accounts and helped almost 3,500 individuals remain in the their homes during the winter. Other special donations included Target’s fully decorated Christmas Trees to area non-profits, OG&E’s used computers to health and human service agencies, and a warehouse full of framed and canvas art donated by a closing company to non-profit agencies throughout our community.
