Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Oklahoma State Charitable Campaign? The Oklahoma State Charitable Campaign (SCC) is an annual, unified fundraising effort that provides state employees with the opportunity to make donations to their favorite charitable organizations through the convenience of payroll deduction or one-time gifts. The SCC is governed by the Oversight Committee for State Employee Charitable Contributions (OCSECC), which is comprised of seven state employee appointees.

How do I give? During the annual campaign, all state employees have the opportunity to make charitable contributions via a provided pledge card. All donations, large or small, are welcomed and greatly appreciated. We encourage you to consider the many needs in your community and make the most generous gift possible. Through payroll deductions, employees may divide the annual contribution into smaller, regular amounts which are deducted each pay period during the coming calendar year. One dollar per pay period is the minimum deduction for payroll deductions. While payroll deduction is the preferred method, contributions may also be made by check or cash.

Who can I give to? This charity guide lists all of the eligible charitable federations and their member charities. Through the SCC you may designate your gift to federations or member charities by indicating choices on the pledge card. Each federation and charity is listed separately, with an assigned four-digit charity code (e.g. 1234) that must be used when making a selection to ensure that your contribution reaches the charity or charities you wish to support. To support a federation and have your gift shared among all of its charities, choose the federation code as it appears preceding the federation name and description. To support an individual charity within a federation, select that charity’s code as it appears preceding the charity name and description. Pledge cards returned with donations but without charity code numbers will be counted as undesignated donations.

What happens to the undesignated donations? According to Oklahoma Statutes, undesignated money shall be distributed in the same proportion as designated dollars within the state of Oklahoma.

What is the administrative rate for the SCC?

Administrative costs for the 2010 campaign were 10 percent of funds received. These funds provide for campaign materials creation and printing, postage and supplies, loaned executive support, coordinator training, campaign recognition and professional staff. All federations share in the administrative cost proportionate to their designations in the campaign.

How do I connect with the charities?

Throughout the charity guide, you will find the charities’ Twitter names and websites.

A letter from the governor T

he State Charitable Campaign does great things for our state. Your donations help to provide education for homeless children, help those suffering from cancer get the support they need and help seniors live active, independent lives. Every one of us has been touched by the work of these organizations, whether through time we’ve spent volunteering or help received during a difficult time. The great thing about Oklahomans is that we are generous people who are willing to lend a hand to our neighbors. By reaching out to those who truly need it through the State Charitable Campaign’s more than 150 charities, we are strengthening our bond as Oklahomans.

Mary Fallin Oklahoma State Governor

A letter from the scc chair As state employees, we make important choices everyday that affect the citizens of our state. Each fall, through the State Charitable Campaign (SCC), we make a different set of choices that impact others. By contributing to the SCC and designating our gifts to charities, we support a variety of health and human services programs that improve the quality of life for all Oklahomans and those served by international charities. I commend you for your ongoing generosity in supporting the State Charitable Campaign. In 2010, state employees contributed more than $625,000! We applaud your tremendous job last year and look forward to great results this year as well. I encourage you to join me in making a pledge to support the SCC. Together, we can continue to make Oklahoma an even better place to live and work.

ucy was born on December 8, 2004. Shortly after birth, Lucy was diagnosed with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, or CAH. People with this condition are unable to make the stress hormone cortisol and can become very ill in times of physical stress. Her first year was very traumatic, with weekly weight checks and monthly heel pricks. She had stopped growing and weighed only 15 pounds for several months. At one year of age Lucy entered in to the care of an SCC Charity. Thanks to the cooperative care between her two medical teams, today Lucy is an extremely active and outgoing preschooler. She is counting the days till the next CAH family meeting, which is a priceless support connection her family has made through your donations. www.okscc.org

anny started treatment for mental illness at age 8 and was institutionalized for the first time at age 12. Thorazine shots and restraints were a familiar part of his routine as a child living in state hospitals. As an adult, he progressed into the prison system. Between visits to prison, he attempted to alleviate his severe depression with alcohol. Finally, in an act of desperation, he attempted to take his own life. Danny moved to a State Charitable Campaign Charity’s facility. He had the opportunity to learn needed skills in a supportive environment as he focused on his recovery from mental illness and addiction issues. He dreamed of living independently, outside of an institution. Perhaps, for the first time in his life, he believes this dream can become his reality. He sees the staff and clients of this SCC Charity as the healthy family he never had.

t was hard not to notice six-month old baby Jaden in the waiting room. He had a big grin on his face, huge crystal blue eyes and was wearing a hat plucked right from the charity’s warmth tree. His mom, Jessica, still dressed professionally from a recent job interview, was obviously nervous and a little embarrassed to ask for our help. The pair had recently relocated to Oklahoma City to be close to Jessica’s mother who was free child care for Jaden while Jessica worked to provide for her baby. However, since the move she was having a hard time finding work. “With the extra help from this SCC Charity I can use the little money I have to put gas in the car to drive to job interviews,” said Jessica. “Formula is expensive and Jaden loves to eat.” Jessica’s situation is like many other families served by your donations. The economy may be starting to turn around, but many people are still having trouble finding work. Our charities are doing their part to make their journey a little easier. 9

onya knows firsthand that homelessness can happen to anyone, all it takes is one tragedy to strike. After living with her sister for several months, Tonya’s family was told they weren’t welcome any longer. “We had nowhere to go so we checked out an SCC Charity,” she said. “At first we were reluctant, but we really needed a place to stay.” When Tonya was 16 years-of-age her father sexually abused her; this left her hurt, angry and alone. She had no ‘family’ to fall back on at this point and the SCC Charity greeted her entire family with open arms. “I resisted the help that was provided at first, however, they kept working with me and I soon began to accept the hope that the charity provided,” she said. The solution-based programs helped Tonya’s entire family as well. Her 4-yearold son, Jayson, was diagnosed with ADHD and also displays characteristics of Autism. Now Jayson is getting connected with therapy and medication, which is a huge blessing for the whole family.

Richard requested services from an SCC Charity while he was staying

at a homeless shelter. He came to Oklahoma from out of state to relocate after his elderly parents whom he had been caring for passed away and the family home went through foreclosure. Richard initially stayed with a friend in Atoka and found employment as a store manager. He came to Oklahoma City after the store closed because business was slow and he couldn’t find other employment in the Atoka area. Richard was assisted with obtaining his birth certificate and state identification card. He was also assisted with bus tokens for transportation for medical appointments, social service appointments and job search. He was assisted with applying for a permanent supportive housing program. Richard was accepted into the permanent supportive housing program and was assisted with the rental deposit for this program. Richard completed the culinary classes at Metro-Tech and obtained employment. He was assisted with bus tokens for transportation to his new employment until he received his first paycheck.

In just seconds, 21-month-old Sofia Torres can capture your heart.

With the use of sign language, she flashes, “I love you” to everyone she meets. “I love you, too!” her speech pathologist, Rachel, replies as they begin Sofia’s latest therapy session. Sofia was born with muscular dystrophy which left her dependent on a ventilator and unable to use her voice. Now a patient at an SCC Charity, she is reaching her maximum potential through an amazing communication device called the MyTobii P10. The MyTobii uses eye-tracking technology to make communication possible for children who cannot speak. “The MyTobii senses Sofia’s eye gaze and allows her to choose items on the screen by focusing on what she wants,” she said. The MyTobii is also credited with giving Sofia independence. “Before, Sofia may have been limited to one or two choices using her hands. Now when she uses her eyes, she can choose from sixteen different things at a time,” Rachel said. It’s just one piece of numerous types of high-tech equipment that make a huge impact on a child’s life. Donations from individuals and foundations give Sofia a voice.

Imagine yourself in this situation: Your only income is social security

and you barely make ends meet. You have no children, you are 76 years old and the sole caregiver of your frail 72 year old wife, who is in extremely poor health and requires frequent visits to doctors. Your vision begins to deteriorate and you are diagnosed with macular degeneration. It is now a danger for you to drive. Now what? You don’t have the money for paid transportation services as often as you need it. What will happen now? Will you be forced to leave your home of 50 years and move to a senior living facility? Surely there is some way you can remain living independently in your own home. You’ve just put yourself in the shoes of “Walter”, a client of an SCC Charity. Because of your donations, Walter and his wife are able to remain in their home, with caring volunteers providing medical transportation at no charge. Since 1994, a very special group of volunteers has been providing free door-through-door transportation services to low-to-moderate income persons age 60 and older in central Oklahoma, providing over 10,000 rides annually for people like Walter.
