United Way of Erie County
MISSION: TOGETHER, IMPROVING LIVES AND BUILDING A STRONGER COMMUNITY. At United Way, we are focused on reducing poverty. Our goal is to help change community conditions to achieve self-sufficiency. This means families can meet basic needs every day without assistance. To accomplish that goal, we focus on two critical and complementary issues that impact poverty — student success from birth and family stability. United Way goes way beyond short-term charity for a few. Together, we are working toward large-scale change that lasts. United Way has evolved from its roots as a fundraising organization to a critical community-impact organization mobilizing local partners — including businesses, community leaders and community residents — to reduce poverty and expand opportunities for people to become self-sufficient.
COLLECTIVE IMPACT Collective Impact is a framework to address complex social problems. It is an innovative and structured approach to making collaboration work across government, business, philanthropy, nonprofit organizations and citizens to achieve significant and lasting social change.
ISOLATED IMPACT
United Way of Erie County follows this framework, acting as the backbone organization for initiatives around student success from birth and family stability. If all of us “fish” — education, social service agencies, business, government, the faith community and citizens — swim together, we can break the cycle of poverty and create positive, lasting change here. By aligning our efforts and resources, we, as a community, will have the greatest collective impact.

OUR GOALS AND ROADMAP TO SUCCESS Born and Stay Healthy
The path to self-sufficiency starts at birth. Children who are born into safe homes with families who are stable are more likely to succeed.
Enter Kindergarten Ready
Children who are kindergarten ready are more likely to have a foundation that supports future learning and a better life.
Read at Third Grade Level
Up to third grade, kids learn to read. After third grade, they read to learn. Kids who are reading proficiently by third grade are four times more likely to graduate high school on time.
Succeed in Middle School
Success in middle school is critical to keeping students on track for on-time graduation and preparing them for life after high school.
Graduate High School
A high school diploma is a critical milestone on the path to a postsecondary degree and/or being career ready.
Be Career Ready
As they continue their education or enter the workforce, young people need access to skills and training so they are more likely to secure and maintain employment.
Emergency Needs Secure and Maintain Employment
When people are able to find decent jobs, provide for their families and absorb the financial bumps in the road we all face, they and their children are more likely to enjoy healthy lives and succeed in school.
United Way recognizes our community needs to be there for others in times of crisis. That is why United Way supports services that respond in times of emergency situations for individuals and families. This includes Disaster Relief, Emergency Financial Assistance, Emergency Shelter and Victims of Crime.
