The COVID-19 pandemic dominate 9 ID-1 months, we established a COV year as we found ways to help. In the early ered donations from many businesses, Response and Recovery Fund that garn emic ey helped agencies working to meet pand corporations and individuals. That mon able were masks for agencies in need, and we needs. We also gathered and purchased etc. s, shoe including hand sanitizer, gloves, to facilitate other donations that came in, to an Helpful Harvest Food Program, thanks Perhaps we’re most proud of starting the t wen 000 uain Charitable Trust. While $70, $820,000 grant from the Hazel Ruby McQ to ,000 on Scott Avenue space, we used $750 toward renovations at the former hotel from ilies. Now, 35 area pantries receive food purchase produce and dry goods for fam uce. prod rage another $805,435 in donated the program, and we’ve been able to leve to have former WVU President David During our campaign, we were fortunate n Susan Hardesty on board as our campaig Hardesty and WVU Parents Club Founder the , ting ey for a campaign this year was daun chairs. While the thought of raising mon our essly worked to exceed our goal, as did Hardestys proved to be key as they tirel ns. paig were focused on their digital cam employee coordinators, many of whom cially with trying to find ways to connect There were plenty of hurdles to clear, espe all that, 2020 also proved that United Way virtually instead of in person, but despite year es put into place throughout our 80-plus was built for this. The plans and procedur s. hbor neig when it came to assisting our history in this community gave us the edge

Usually, Women United members organize Power of the Purse to raise money to fund Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. However, because of the pandemic, Power of the Purse had to be canceled. Instead, Women United called upon several local celebrities to read children’s books during a virtual event. That event ended up raising $2,715 for the Imagination Library.

Spotlight on the Issues Breaking the Cycle
Between August and December, 61 people participated in the Breaking the Cycle online simulator, which helped people learn what it was like living in poverty and having to make hard choices. Here is what some of them had to say: - “I think we need more options for people that are struggling and a better understanding of what they go through.” - “Familiar. Humbling. Irritating.” - “This hit close to home, having grown up in poverty, with food insecurity, lack of access to medical care, and many of the issues faced by the Hart family. I think this will really help people who haven't experienced these challenges to get a glimpse into what it's like.” The simulator is available at tiny.cc/breakthecycle.
WV211 is here to help

In 2020, a total of 591 calls were made to WV211 in Monongalia and Preston counties. More than 1,000 referrals were made to area agencies. The No. 1 need was utility help, followed by food insecurity. 2020 Annual Report

The FRN had a successful, albeit challenging, year helping families and children in our area. While events such as the Community Pool Party had to be canceled because of COVID-19, the FRN Advisory Committee continued to meet virtually. Community food pantries were also able to keep in touch and learned more about the Helpful Harvest Food Program. The Warm Hands Warm Hearts Outerwear Collection was able to be held and collected 1,156 items.
Our Impact
MyFreeTaxes helps people file their tax returns completely free of charge. United Way promoted the program locally. A total of 115 returns were completed in Monongalia and Preston counties, resulting in more than $202,219 in refunds.
Emergency Food and Shelter Program
The Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) supplements and expands the work of local social service agencies in an effort to help people with economic emergencies. Locally, it is coordinated by United Way.
Holiday Food and Toy Distribution
The 39th Annual Holiday Toy and Food Distribution looked very different this year as the food distribution was held separately from the toy distribution because of the pandemic. About 400 families received toys from Christian Help, and hundreds of cars drove through the mobile food pantry held Dec. 4, 2020, at the former hotel on Scott Avenue. The Monongalia County Humane Society distributed 11,000 pounds of pet food that will help feed 1,000 pets during the event. Morgantown Board of Realtors members helped deliver 427 Helpful Harvest food boxes to homebound and shut-ins during the event. This event wouldn’t be possible without our partners, Christian Help and Monongalia County Humane Society, and our sponsors Kroger and DTE Energy.
VolunteerMPC
The website has proven to be a tremendous asset to our United Way and community and has successfully helped coordinate volunteers for many local non-profit agencies and various large scale service projects, including the Helpful Harvest Food Program, Preston County Food Distribution, and the Holiday Toy and Food Distribution.

The No. 1 need was utility help, followed by food insecurity. 2020 Annual Report

While $70, $820,000 grant from the Hazel Ruby McQ to ,000 on Scott Avenue space, we used $750 toward renovations at the former hotel from pantries. Now, 35 pantries receive food purchase produce and dry goods for area uce. prod rage another $805,435 in donated the program, and we’ve been able to leve to have former WVU President David During our campaign, we were fortunate n Susan Hardesty on board as our campaig Hardesty and WVU Parents Club Founder the , ting ey for a campaign this year was daun chairs.
