with Instructions for Border Crossing -

Award-winning theatre-maker Andy Smith (co-director of An Oak Tree with Tim Crouch) presents this tale of one man and his place in the world, set against the turbulent backdrop of 80 years of socio-economic change in the north of England. Using political speeches from each decade,

A twelve-year-old girl sneaks across the border into her own country. Her parents watch her on a computer screen. The works of a half-forgotten performance artist seem to hold the key to bringing down a brutal system operating on our behalf and under our noses. Do you join in? Or do you look the other way?

The Preston Bill examines and highlights the difference and similarities of our political landscape through these years. It presents a gentle call to action in these turbulent times. It is a reminder that the actions of one person can make a difference. Developed as part of Fuel’s New Theatre in your Neighbourhood project. Commissioned by They Eat Culture. Supported by Lancaster Arts (Lancaster University) and the Nightingale, Brighton. Funded by Arts Council England.

Co-commissioned by ARC Stockton, Harrogate Theatre, HOME, Norwich Arts Centre, Oxford Playhouse, Unity Theatre & West Yorkshire Playhouse. Funded by Arts Council England.

This is what she would have said,

The year is 1867. Edward Brett and his Irish wife, Eliza are struggling to make a living from their small shop. Edward’s brother, a popular policeman, is shot dead during the rescue of two Irish Republican prisoners in Manchester. A huge upsurge of anti-Irish feeling sweeps the country and three Irishmen are publicly hanged. Edward and Eliza struggle to cope with their personal loss, their loyalty to each other and their different cultural backgrounds. Written to coincide with the 150th anniversary of real events, the play explores dilemmas that are still very relevant today. The performer, dancer, and vocalist, François Testory fuses his extraordinary physicality, and androgynous and unique stage presence with a seven-octave vocal range to bring to life the murderous Medea in this evocative lament, featuring live music by acclaimed composer and music producer, Phil Von François.
