White oak – less color variation because less subspecies than southern oak. Slow growing seasons o provide tighter graining o strong fibers o consistent grain patterns o beautiful heartwood o creates a more stable cut of wood.

CUTS & GRADES

Each cut is defined by the relationship of the growth rings to the boards face & the grain pattern on the surface. Each cut has its own unique visual beauty.

Plain Sawn / Flat Sawn: Commodity Cut. Annular growth rings are 30 degrees or less the face of the board. VISUAL: cathedral pattern on face of board Quarter Sawn: Log cut into quarters. Defined when annular growth ring intersects the face of board at 60 -90-degree angle. VISUAL: straight grain with fleck Rift Sawn: Log cut into quarters. Annular growth rings intersect face of board at 30-60 degrees. Difficult to get wide plank. Notice where the boards come from. VISUAL: straight grain – NO FLECK Live Sawn: Log cut straight through. Similar to French Oak Cut. Mix of cathedral grain, Rift & Quartered VISUAL: great mix of all grain, knots, & character of tree. www.hickmanwoods.com Allegheny Mountain Hardwood Flooring 501 Main St. Emlenton, PA 16373 800.867.9441

R&Q offers Great Dimensional Stability Wood expands or contracts as it gains or loses moisture. The movement is determined by the direction of the annual growth rings. The directional movement of‌ Rift & Quarter Sawn is through the thickness of the board. Plain Sawn is across the width. Live Sawn is a mix, but more stable than Plain Sawn because of high percentage of R&Q The stability therefore in R&Q allows for wider, solid planks to be laid without the fear of cupping & gaping between the boards

Rift & Quartered is Recommended for solid hardwood when installed directly over radiant heat

We exceed NOFMA Requirements NOFMA Grading Characteristics VS. Allegheny Mountain Grading Characteristics Definitions: Quarter Sawn or Quartered: In cross section the angle of the annual ring tangent to the face of the piece to be between 45* and 90*. Grain lines to be mostly parallel to the length of strips and medullary ray flecks present and more than 1/16” wide. RIFT Sawn: in cross section the angle of the annual ring tangent to the face of the piece to be between 30* to 60*. Grain lines to be mostly parallel to the length of strips and medullary rays fleck less than 1/16” wide. REQUIREMENTS: NOFMA - Quarter Sawn: at least 50% of the piece must contain Quartered Characteristics Allegheny – Quarter Sawn – 100% of the board will contain Quartered Characteristics Rift Sawn: at least 75% of the piece must contain Rift Characteristics. Allegheny – RIFT Sawn – 100% of the board will contain RIFT Characteristics

NOFMA Grading Characteristics: Grades Clear Oak: A mostly heartwood flooring product that allows all the natural heartwood color variations within minimal character marks & limited color variation. This combination features the infinitely variable grain patterns with the minimal distraction from character marks and color variation. Select Oak : Contains all the variations in coloration produced by the contrasting differences of heartwood and sapwood. Also included are minimal character marks, such as knots, worm holes, and mineral streaks, as well as slightly open characters. The combination creates a floor where light sapwood and dark heartwood are combined with small characters and other small color interruptions. No. 1 Common Oak: Flooring product characterized by prominent color variation that also contains prominent characters (with size limits) such as knots, open checks, worm holes, along with machining and drying variations. No. 1 Common is a tasteful floor where prominent variation is expected. No. 2 Common Oak : Contains sound natural and manufacturing variations including knot holes, open worm holes, and

other open characters along with prominent color variations. Manufacturing variations include drying characters and machining irregularities. No 2 Common is most desirable for applications where numerous notable character marks and prominent contrast is desired.

ALLEGHENY MOUNTAIN can offer 100% Rift Only or 100% QUARTERED ONLY What does this mean? You could order a 4” Rift White Oak and have 1” of plain sawn grain on each board per the rulebook! Your customer doesn’t care what the rulebook says. If they want a Rift floor they don’t want any plain sawn grain. Save yourself the headache, call Allegheny Mountain Hardwood Flooring when you want the best.

The Original Allegheny Live Sawn a naturally beautiful floor that’s both cost effective and environmentally friendly  

  

Allegheny Live Sawn is the result of straight cutting select logs from the outside diameter through the heartwood. The boards incorporate the full range of the tree’s characteristics creating a unique balance and mix of clear and natural grades with grain direction varying from Plain sawn to Rift & Quarter sawn. The wider the plank the more these distinct figures are displayed. We can produce wide planks with confidence in its stability due to our precise drying techniques and high percentage of Rift & Quarter Sawn in each board Live Sawn primarily done in White Oak and now Red Oak.

Plain Sawn is your commodity cut for the oak species. We offer it, but it’s more of a byproduct in the red and white oak. Cherry, Hickory and Walnut are primarily cut as plain sawn. Boards are less stable due to direction of growth rings.
