ARBORICULTURAL CONSULTANTS
FROM THE IACA PRESIDENT It’s an exciting and challenging time to be a consulting arborist in Australia. The importance of urban forestry is being increasingly understood by urban design and planning professionals, as well as the vital role arborists and urban foresters play in gathering and disseminating information that is pertinent to good urban planning. Local government has been touting the need for improving urban forest canopy for a number of years. In 2015, the Turnbull Government announced its agenda for creating more liveable cities, citing greater forest canopies as a key element to greening our cities. Many state governments are now taking up the challenge and employing urban forest policies at regional and district levels to develop quality green canopies to create more liveable urban environments. Green infrastructure is fundamental and requires space. The objective of increasing urban canopy creates a challenge for arborists, urban foresters, designers and planners, landscape architects and other related disciplines, as well as for landowners, land managers and developers. These professionals need to collaborate to ensure that the canopy is provided in conjunction with the buildings, landscaping, energy, telecommunications, water, sewage, stormwater and transport infrastructure that comprise liveable urban space. Public land is essential
INSTITUTE OF AUSTRALIAN CONSULTING ARBORICULTURISTS CONSULTING ARBORICULTURIST A Consulting Arboriculturist, commonly referred to as a Consulting Arborist, provides a broad range of verbal and written advice about trees in the urban environment. Usually Consulting Arboriculturists are in private practice and work as part of a team of other professionals, such as architects, town planners, landscape architects, engineers and ecologists. Consulting Arboriculturists are different from Contracting Arborists in that they do not undertake pruning and removal of trees. While
in providing space for trees and other green infrastructure. However, public land alone will not provide the amount of urban forest canopy necessary to sustain a healthy urban ecosystem. There is currently no tertiary qualification in urban forestry in Australia. However, urban forestry has been a key focus of arboricultural conferences here for the past couple of decades, and more recently has become a conference topic for many associated professions. Consulting and municipal arborists alike have a role in achieving appropriate urban forest canopy. Trained arborists have the technical knowledge necessary for the good tree management required to sustain existing canopy and advise on canopy replenishment. Consulting arborists have a responsibility to landowner clients and their representatives to provide relevant advice and to recommend appropriate tree management. Often the broader community and environmental goal of increasing tree cover conflicts with what might be considered best tree management practice. IACA accredits consulting arborists it considers meet the professional standards required to work alongside other land use professionals to achieve sustainable and liveable urban spaces. IACA provides support and professional development to its members to attain and maintain the professional standard necessary to create green and liveable cities, for today and for the future. Ian McKenzie | President, IACA

The Institute of Australian Consulting Arboriculturists (IACA) was established in 2003 as a specialist professional body for Consulting Arboriculturists in Australia. Arborists involved in pruning or removal work are not permitted to become members. This demarcation removes any perceived conflict of interest in the tree assessment process, enabling unbiased advice to be provided by IACA members. Alongside government and allied professions, it works to improve the design, planning and management of natural and built environments. AILA represents 3500 (and growing) members throughout Australia and overseas. As a not-for-profit professional organisation, its role is to serve the mutual interests of AILA members and the wider profession. Our world needs landscape architects more than ever. Landscape architects are the only profession with the theoretical and practical skills required to balance environmental and human needs successfully.
