NOVA in 2011-2012: courses, teaching staff, students, graduates and employability

May 2013

1. Offer By "study cycles already in operation" were considered the study cycles accredited by A3ES and recorded by DGES, with students enrolled in NOVA.

«Study cycles in association» were considered as those involving, at least, one Portuguese higher education institution (HEI) besides NOVA, being therefore organized in accordance with article 42.º of Decree-Law n.º 107/2008. «Study cycles in collaboration» include, at least, one foreign HEI, as, for example, the case of Erasmus Mundus Masters and PhD programmes. Study cycles that comprise more than one academic unit of NOVA (table 1.1) may be considered as in «association»

if they integrate another national HEI, in «collaboration» if they include a foreign HEI or if they are lectured exclusively by NOVA’s academic units.

It should be pointed out that the two study cycles in association/collaboration of ISEGI correspond to an Erasmus Mundus master degree and to a master course where some students complete part of the programme at a foreign institution therefore receiving two diplomas. This situation is regulated by bilateral agreements between the institutions. In table 1.1, the study cycles were counted only in the academic unit where students enrolled in 2011/12 or, in cases where the enrolments took place in more than one institution, in the proponent regarding A3ES.

The same study cycle can be counted in a national association, as well as in an international one, if the consortium includes higher education institutions with these two features.

2. Demand Regarding 1.st study cycles and integrated masters, it was opted to provide, for all indicators, the data relating to 1.st phase applications only. This decision relates to the current inability to determine the exact number of applicants of the three existent phases, since one would have to check whether there was repetition of applicants between different phases. The data relating to 1.st study cycles and integrated masters were provided by the Planning Division (on 14/12/2012) and are included on CNAES 2011-2012 (National Competition for Access to Higher Education). The data concerning 2.nd and 3.rd study cycles were provided by the Academic Services Direction - Academic Management, Employability and Career Management Division (data collected in January 2012). No information was gathered on the number of applicants for NOVA’s masters and PhD programmes.

Both Nova SBE and ITQB do not establish vacancies to their masters and PhD programmes. Therefore, it is not possible to calculate the following indicators: total placements/total vacancies and filled vacancies/total vacancies. Nevertheless, we inform that the total number of placed and of enrolled students in Nova SBE 2.nd study cycles was of 537 and 392, respectively. In 3.rd study cycles both values totalized 6 students. In ITQB, in 2011/2012, there was in operation only one PhD, which had 30 enrolled and placed students. When the ratio of total placements/total vacancies is higher than 1, it means that supernumerary students were accepted.

6. Success Rate Students from Integrated Masters can obtain a 1st cycle degree after completing 180 ECTS. Therefore, it is presented two columns for the Bachelors of FCT: one for regular 1st study cycle and other for 1st study cycle included in an integrated master. In FCM, since this AU does not offer 1st cycle studies, the data related to the completion of the referred ECTS was not included in the graphs. Nonetheless, according to RAIDES, in 2011, 244 students enrolled in the integrated master degree at FCM obtained the 1st cycle degree, 92,6% of them in the required number of years (N), 4,1% in one more year (N+1), 1,2% needed 2 mores years (N+2) and 2% more than 2 years (>N+2). The following regular durations (N) were considered by level of study: Bachelor N=3; Integrated Master N=5; Master N=2; PhD N=4.

7. Employability The presented data was collected and analyzed by the Observatory of Graduates’ Transitions into Work at NOVA (OBIPNOVA) and concerns the questionnaire applied to UNL graduates that ended their courses in 2008/09, namely the characterization of their situation one year after that conclusion. Considering that the first study cycles organized according to the Bologna Process started in 2006/2007, the majority of graduates enquired concluded their studies in the pre-Bologna model. For a “confidence level” of 95%, the samples concerning the 2008/09 graduates are statistical representative. The “margin of error” is 1,8% in the case of first-degree graduates, 1,5% for masters and 7,5% in what concerns PhDs graduates, while the response rates achieved respectively 67,3%, 74% and 50,9%. The first set of graphs show the professional situation of graduates one year after completing the study cycle. The EUROSTAT classification, adopted by INE, includes three categories: Employed – the individual with the minimal specified age that, in the reference period, finds himself/herself in one of the following situations: (a) he/she had work at least one hour, upon payment of a fee, in view of a profit or familiar gain in cash or in kind; (b) he/she had a job with a formal liaison to it, but was not at service; (c) he/she had a company but was temporarily not working for a specific reason; (d) he/she was in a pre-reform condition while working in the reference period. Unemployed – the individual with the minimal specified age that, in the reference period, finds himself/herself simultaneously in the following situations: (a) he/she does not have a paid job or any other; (b) he/she is available to work in a paid or unpaid job; (c) he/she has kept looking for a job, this is, has taken active steps over a specified period to find a paid or unpaid job. What is considered as steps: (i) contact with a public employment center or private agencies; (ii) contact with employers; (iii) personal contacts; (iv) placement or response to employment ads; (v) participation in examinations or interviews for selection; (vi) search for land, premises or equipment; (vii) application for licenses or financial resources to create his/her own company. Economically Inactive – individual of any age that, in the reference period, cannot be considered economically active, this is, that is not employed nor unemployed, neither in mandatory military service. Therefore, the percentage of unemployed graduates is affected by the number of "inactive individuals"; the higher the number of inactive individuals, the lower the percentage of unemployed graduates. According to the definition of this category, the 1st cycle graduates that continue their studies by doing master degrees are considered “economically inactive”. Note, however, that master students are only classified as "inactive" if they have not made efforts to get

Teaching Quality Office

28

a job and simultaneously declare themselves as not available to work in the reference period. If not, they are classified as "unemployed" even though they are studying.

The following graphs show the percentage of graduates with a professional occupation that matches their academic level one year after graduation. The concept of “matching is based on the skill levels of the International Standard Classification of Occupations (ISCO). The three first ISCO categories include posts that are typically occupied by tertiary education graduates (EUROSTAT). The data show the percentage of respondents whose professional activity is matched to the level of instruction.

8. Dropout Rate The dropout rate was calculated in the following way: (1) Enrolled students in 31-12-2010 (4) Enrolled students for the 1st time in 31-12-2011 (2) Enrolled students in 31-12-2011 (5) Reentries in 31-12-2010 (3) Graduates in 2011 (6) Calculated Dropouts = (1)-(3)+(4)+(5)–(2) Dropout Rate = (6)/(1) X100 It should be noted that the data can be inflated by the incorrect fill in of RAIDES 2011, particularly in what concerns the reentries registry at FCSH and ISEGI.
