It points out possibilities for getting active and engaged besides the lecture rooms at the university. Additionally, the most important dates and information regarding your start of studies here at the University of Liechtenstein will be presented.

Dear students Congratulations for choosing the University of Liechtenstein as your place of further education! Realizing your academic goals or an outstanding labor market possibilities are for sure main reasons for your choice of university. And of course self-development possibilities as well as the further development of your personality are also connected with this. At the University of Liechtenstein, you for sure will be able to realize these ideas and plans very well. Not only a very supporting and personal environment between professors and students argue for that, but also different kinds of offers and possibilities to commit yourself throughout your studies with different initiatives. Young, personal and entrepreneurial – that’s what describes our University of Liechtenstein. Therefore, you are requested to shape your studies here actively from the very beginning. Make full use of the possibilities during your time here: Embedded in a traditional and creative environment you can seize future-oriented projects and initiatives with your fellow students, or get committed in a club or association. Experience the international spirit in our Bachelor’s and Master’s programs as well as a highly recommended semester abroad at one of our renowned partner universities. Dear Freshmen We are delighted to welcome you to the student community of the University of Liechtenstein. A new chapter of your life is going to start soon, which often brings a lot of questions with it. We – the student’s office SPINNEREI – therefore tried to answer some of your possible questions in this handbook. You will find useful information regarding studies, campus life, student organizations and leisure time on the following pages. Studies always require a lot of time, effort and learning but we have the opinion that it is equally necessary to enjoy your time and relax! That’s what we are here for: «events and more» is our slogan and we feel responsible for your student-life outside of the lecture rooms. We organize events, excursions, go-kart-tournaments, poker nights, pub-crawls and much more for you! But every student initiative is as good as their members, therefore your ideas, inputs and feedback will always be highly appreciated. We are looking forward to getting to know you personally during the welcome week, anytime in our office (S11) or wherever we meet on campus: we are there for you and your concerns. GENERAL INFORMATION Studies – Central Service Desk The Central Service Desk (CSD) directly at the main entrance is your first port of call for any information, as well as for all queries regarding courses or anything else. The staff members at the CSD will help you – or get you in touch with the responsible person. Regular opening hours during the semester are: Monday to Thursday:

08.30 am – 12.00 pm and 1.30 pm – 5.00 pm

Friday:

08.30 am – 12.00 pm and 1.00 pm – 5.00 pm

Saturday:

In addition, the CSD offers the following services: Binding of seminar papers Plastic comb binding spines in various colours and sizes, as well as plastic and cardboard covers for binding seminar papers are available for purchase from the CSD. Use of the binding machine is available free of charge to all students. Student ID/International Student ID The Student IDs can be collected from the CSD (further details will be provided during the introduction week). The student ID is always issued for the current semester. The ID can be extended each semester after the payment of the student fees is proceeded. The first ID is free of charge – a fee of CHF 20.- is charged for the replacement of lost IDs. An international student ID can also be ordered from the CSD: Therefore, the following documents are required: a completed personal data form (available at the CSD); a current passport photo and CHF 20.- in cash. The IDs are generally issued within one working day. Transcript of records A transcript of records can be ordered at the CSD – it usually takes one or two working days for that to be issued. Post/letters The CSD is not a post office! We ask students not to have post sent to the university address. Please use your private address instead!

GENERAL INFORMATION Studies – Residence permits IMPORTANT!!! Students who wish to take up temporary residence in Liechtenstein for the purpose of study need to apply for a short-term residence permit. Please notice that you must register within two weeks of moving to Liechtenstein. To apply for residence permits, Katrin Schmuck and Katharina Büchel are your first point of contact. The Coordination Centre for permits will provide you with all relevant information regarding the application procedure. As the residence permit is a short-term residence permit (L-Bewilligung), it can only be issued for a period of one year. Thus, a new application needs to be submitted every year! Students from third countries should remember that they need a visa for Liechtenstein. The University provides a bank guarantee, after a deposit of CHF 3’000.- is paid by the student to the University of Liechtenstein. This amount is retained as a security deposit and will not be refunded until your departure. Anyone wishing to take on a job in Liechtenstein during their studies is asked to first contact the Coordination Centre for permits to get informed about special work regulations (working hours, permits, etc.) for students. After completing your degree or when moving away from Liechtenstein, you MUST return the residence permit! For additional information regarding legal requirements and details concerning the application procedure, please contact the Coordination Centre for permits anytime If you wish to live in Austria or Switzerland, please, keep in mind to go through all of the required procedures in order to be able to live there. It is your responsibility to follow all of the rules!

Confirmation of enrolment The confirmation of enrolment is available for download on your personal Intranet Website (on http://my.uni.li). This document then can be printed or saved for further use. Confirmations for current semesters are available as soon as the semester fee is payed, received and credited.

SERVICE OFFERINGS - OVERVIEW Spinnerei The students‘ office Spinnerei organizes different activities during the semester, for example the Semester Start Party or a Pub Crawl, but also Go-Kart races and soccer tournaments.

ULSV ULSV is the student representative organization and supports students throughout their studies in different kind of matters. They also inform you about important changes at the university and supports the program administrators in elaborating new programs and/or courses.

Uni Sport (LHSV) The Uni Sport initiative offers various sports programs, but also the participation in team events and trainings throughout the semester, e.g. soccer, volleyball, yoga or the participation in the SOLA Stafette in Zurich.

welcome@unili Welcome@uni.li was founded in order to facilitate future unili-students their start of studies. The program offers for instance a facebook group as an exchange platform, and so-called Welcome-Guides take care of your requests and questions at the beginning of the semester.

uni.li Student Care The student care program takes care of the well-being of the students. Because of this goal, during the exam period a «Recharge Room» is offered. But also cooking workshops, workshops for relaxation through self-hypnosis or exam preparation are held.

career:service The career:service offers support with applications, job search and your own carrier path planning.

University of Liechtenstein Alumni University of Liechtenstein Alumni is an organized Alumni club which aims to maintain and strengthen the connection between former students and the University.

Buddy Team, International Office – ESN The Buddy Team supports especially exchange students during their start of studies at the university. The Erasmus Student Network ESN stands for the most important voluntary student organization within the international university landscape in Europe.

ULSV Who we are We are a small group of students having one thing in common: to represent the interests of students at University of Liechtenstein. In addition, every student interested in taking part has the possibility to become an operative member in the ULSV board. What we do As a part of the university-organization our members participate in all committees which address students’ concerns. Furthermore, we take part in application proceedings for new professors and have a seat in the Senate-committee, which is the highest university committee. As an ULSV member you have‌ >

UNI SPORT Five years ago the Uni Sport program was founded. Since then, the main goal of Uni Sport is to bring sports into the everyday life of our students. In cooperation with international sports federations and local sports clubs and fitness centers, we can offer you plenty of discounts for various activities. Offers: >

Further, the University of Liechtenstein is a member of the Liechtensteinischen Hochschulsport Verbandes (Liechtenstein University Sports Federation; LHSV), which again is a member of FISU (International University Sports Federation) and EUSA (European University Sports Federation). Students who are practicing a certain kind of sport actively are able to participate in international tournaments for the University.

CAREER:SERVICE career:service The career:service at the University of Liechtenstein offers you support in contacting companies for jobs and assistance in planning your career. Further, the service includes internship offers and job offers for the time after graduation – in and out of Liechtenstein. Career:service also offers career consulting each semester, and also information about formal procedures concerning employment in Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany and Switzerland.

Current job offers: Career:service gives you an overview of current job offers on our homepage, but also through a closed Facebook group.

Career consulting: To cover topics as career planning or career development, a career consulting takes place regularly.

News and information: On the career:service homepage students can get an overview of the regulations regarding the topic „working in Liechtenstein“.

Photo service: We offer the possibility to take photos for e.g. applications by a professional photographer.

Career day Finance: The career day offers students the possibility to get to know future employers and the region itself, but also to widen their personal network. Through different workshops, they get an insight into current topics and the everyday work life in the participating companies.

Workshops: career:service offers plenty of workshops throughout the semester, which prepare the students for their future work life.

UNIVERSITY OF LIECHTENSTEIN ALUMNI (ULA) The Alumni organization of the University of Liechtenstein is the association of all former students of the undergraduate, graduate and PhD level. Its aim is to build a network of alumni, to structure it and to maintain it, in order to connect the graduates after their time at the university with their “Alma Mater”. It supports an active exchange between students and alumni through different offers. Through this exchange with graduates, also current students can enlarge their network by exchanging experiences at different events and meetings. Furthermore, a monthly „Alumni-of-the-month“-Portrait is published.

FINANCING YOUR STUDIES

CHF

Studying offers a lot of possibilities but also causes costs. Liechtenstein is one of the most expensive countries in Europe. But there are a variety of options (grants, scholarships, jobs etc.) to fund your studies. On this page you can find some information concerning the funding of your studies. >

Often parents do not only offer moral support but also financial means for your studies. The standards for child support are different in each country – therefore, it is best to discuss with your parents in what way and to what extend they are able to support you.

>

Scholarships are usually performance-related. Apart from academic performances, some scholarship donors may also require e.g. political or social engagement as well as other achievements. Scholarships must not to be paid back usually.

>

All students who are residents of the Principality of Liechtenstein also have the option to apply for a scholarship of the Swiss Study Foundation.

>

Students of the MSc in Architecture have the possibility to apply for an API scholarship. Furthermore, there is the Hilti Fellowship and the Student Research Fellowship for students of the MSc in Information Systems, as well as the LGT University Scholarship for MSc Finance students.

>

Many students work part-time and thereby partially fund their studies on their own. The career:service of the University of Liechtenstein offers a variety of job offers for part-time working and internships. When taking up employment, legal regulations need to be taken into account and holders of scholarships need to check their allowed additional earnings.

>

Another option to fund your studies are study loans. Many banks as well as countries offer suitable formats. The Principality of Liechtenstein offers an interest-free loan to students who have been living in Liechtenstein for at least three years.

WELCOME@UNILI Welcome@unili stands for all service offerings which facilitate future uni.li-students their start in their first semester. The program offers students the following: 

A closed Facebook group for each semester, in which the freshmen can start an early exchange with their future fellow students

At the same time, this group is an information platform to inform about living in Liechtenstein

Welcome-Guides accompany the new students (if desired) before and during the first weeks at the university and offer them advice

Each future student receives a welcome package a few weeks before the beginning of the semester

An organized introduction week takes place at the beginning of the semester, where students can get to know their fellow students

A handbook (the one you are reading right now), which includes the most important information regarding the start of studies, living as well as leisure activities.

WELCOME@UNILI Events: Welcome Weekend (on 11 and 12 February, 2017) Feel like home from the first day on! In order to welcome you at the university, we organize a welcome weekend at the beginning of the semester before the introduction week starts. This time, it will take place on the arrival weekend (11 and 12 February 2017), that’s just before the introduction week. Meeting point is the student dormitory, where you will also get help regarding the check-in or your onward journey to your living place. Additionally, you have the possibility to get to know your future fellow students – and we will also take care for some snacks and refreshments!

On Saturday (11.2.2017) as well as on Sunday (12.2.2017) you will get a personal reception by some of our team members. Your future housemates as well as different events, like an optional visit to the Landesmuseum or the Health- and Safety Workshop, await you. We are looking forward to meeting you!

WELCOME@UNILI Events: Introduction week The introduction week takes place from 13th to 19th February, 2017 and is mandatory for all new students. There will be a general program for all of you, but also some specific events for each study program. During this week you will get all necessary information for a smooth start at the University of Liechtenstein: You will receive general and administrative information, as well as an introduction into the IT infrastructure. You will get to know local companies, museums and other institutions through presentations, company visits and other activities. In addition to that, it will be a fun week for all of us – we have prepared plenty of activities: breakfast, skiing, an international dinner, the semester start party and much more! – Download the preliminary timetable of the introduction week on www.uni.li/welcome > Introduction week! BUDDY TEAM, ESN – ERASMUS STUDENT NETWORK The Buddy Programme is a support program aimed to provide assistance to international exchange students, regular international students as well as regular students by assigning them a so-called buddy. Buddies are often local and experienced students who are committed to giving a helping hand. In doing so, the integration of the international students into the cultural-, social- and academic environment in Liechtenstein is actively promoted. Furthermore, the Buddy Program encourages the mutually beneficial exchange of ideas and accordingly fosters the intercultural dialogue. The Buddy Program has often lead to long-lasting international friendships. The Erasmus Student Network (ESN) is an international non-profit student organization. Their mission is to represent international students and to offer them the possibility to gain cultural

understanding

and

self

development, by the principle of „students help students“.

STUDENT INITIATIVES - OVERVIEW START Liechtenstein START Liechtenstein is a student initiative at the University of Liechtenstein and part of the international STARTglobal network. Motivation meets innovation! Their most important task can be described as passing on the philosophy of gaining, exchanging and perfecting the knowledge about both entre- and intrapreneurship.

Invictus The Landsmannschaft Invictus zu Vaduz is a students’ fraternity for male students. They offer a tight network with lots of contacts and various activities. They were founded in 2011. The club encourages its members to fair thinking and acting, to success, determination and fraternity.

Club Alpbach Liechtenstein Club Alpbach Liechtenstein was founded in 2012 by former participants of the „European Forum Alpbach“. The Liechtenstein organization is politically independent and aims to foster the dialogue about the development of Europe.

START LIECHTENSTEIN START Liechtenstein START is a student organization dedicated to entrepreneurship, which is represented at many universities mainly within the German-speaking area. With the aim to combine the acquired theoretical knowledge with practical insights and to foster an exchange of experiences, we offer an active exchange platform for students, founders, businessmen and industry experts. The exchange of knowledge helps significantly to overcome everyday entrepreneurial boundaries and thus to generate added value for everyone involved. Motivation meets Innovation! START organizes for example the „Pioneers‘ Club“, where founders, young entrepreneurs and CEOs exchange experiences. It is a platform to enlarge your network and to connect with other ambitious students in the German-speaking area.

CLUB ALPBACH LIECHTENSTEIN The Club Alpbach Liechtenstein sends members to participate in the annual „European Forum Alpbach“ in Tyrol (Austria), in order to foster and intensify the relationship of the EU and Liechtenstein. Former participants of the „European Forum Alpbach“ founded the club in 2012. The club is politically independent and aims to foster the dialogue on the development of Europe. To participate, scholarships are given to students and young talents. They are then able to participate in the annual event in August. Throughout the year, the Club Alpbach organizes discussions and events in and around Liechtenstein, in order to bring together interested people and to share their knowledge.

STUDY ABROAD: A SEMESTER ABROAD INTERNATIONAL OFFICE Semester abroad Would you like to study, cook and party with students from all around the world? Then take the opportunity to experience all these during our semester abroad. We have a large selection of partner universities in Europe and further abroad for you to choose from. Please take a look at the list via www.uni.li/outgoings. The European Union’s Erasmus+ Program provides assistance to facilitate a semester abroad. Applications for the winter as well as summer semester must be submitted by 1 March of the respective academic year. For business students, the third semester is considered a good time to go abroad. Important: you need to have already obtained 20 ECTS credits by the time you register for a semester abroad! Students in the master’s degree program in Architecture are obliged to spend their third semester abroad. The requirements are also listed on the International Office’s homepage. International Internship An internship abroad will give you the possibility to apply knowledge you have obtained during your studies so far. What makes it so interesting is that you do this in a foreign environment. Additionally, you become acquainted with a new infrastructure that differ to the one you are used. At the same time you become familiar with another hierarchal structure and corporate culture. Internships within Europe are supported by the Life Long Learning Programme. This involves arranging your own internship. Our website has links to numerous internship exchanges. We would be happy to let you draw upon our contacts and assist you in preparing your application. CAMPUS: PARKING ON CAMPUS Parking on campus A fee will be charged for the use of all parking areas on the Vaduz Campus parking areas on the Vaduz Campus and at the off-campus locations. The income from the parking area management will be channeled towards a university mobility management scheme as part of the university’s sustainability initiative.

What are the rates? The standard rate for parking across the entire site is CHF 0.50 per hour. A day permit costs CHF 1.50 for students and CHF 2.00 for lecturers and employees. The costs decrease further with semester, monthly and annual parking permits.

How does it work? Parking fees can be paid in cash at the central parking meter (current standard rate of CHF 0.50/hour). Alternatively, cashless payments can be made using the ParkingCard system, available throughout Switzerland (www.parkingcard.ch).

How do I get my ParkingCard permit? As frequent parkers, students, employees and lecturers can purchase parking permits online or directly from the university. In every case, it is necessary to register the vehicle registration number(s) in advance on the intranet. Tariff

STUDENT DORMITORY The new student dormitory is placed very near to the university. It consists of two three-story buildings. Buildings: “A” and “B” are laterally reversed. There are six single and three double rooms at every level, a large shared kitchen/living room area, a laundry room and three shared bathrooms. Booking Your admission as an exchange or regular student will grant you access to the online booking system. You can book your room by yourself using your personal user code or login and password. To make your booking for a place/room in the student dormitory, a deposit is necessary. Rent A single room costs CHF 560.- per month. A place in a double room costs CHF 350.- per month. Additionally, there are parking lots to be rented in front of the student dormitory. The student dormitory is located on the same street as the University of Liechtenstein. It takes 2-3 min. to get to the University by foot. Walking to Vaduz center takes about 10-15 min., a bus ride takes about 2-3 min. There are very good bus connections to Vaduz into the city center, but also to Feldkirch/Austria.
