2016 SUMMER SEMESTER

PREVIEW

Master of Science in Architecture Institute of Architecture and Planning

Preview

This upcoming Summer Semester 2016 will offer new exciting opportunities to broaden our understanding and knowledge of architecture and urban design. Studios led by Prof. Peter Droege with Anis Radzi, Prof. Dietrich Schwarz with Martin Mackowitz and Prof. Peter Staub with Georgia Papathanasiou will be at the heart of the Master’s degree programme in Architecture. They will be accompanied by seminar weeks to Germany, Jerusalem and London and a series of lecture classes designed to provide theoretical input to be applied in the studios. Additionally, this semester will introduce «cultural identity» as the institute’s main theme, to be implemented during the autumn in all design studios. Three lectures by renowned scholars and architects will offer different perspectives on this theme and thus a basis for our own investigations to come. The cosmopolitan student body in the Master’s degree programme is the perfect breeding ground for fruitful exchanges and debates about this topic, as currently more than 30 nationalities from five continents are represented! I welcome you all (back) to the University of Liechtenstein and wish you a successful semester full of adventures, new insights, memorable encounters, fruitful debates and last but not least – enjoyment. PETER STAUB Academic Director of the Master’s degree Programme

Climate Refuge City

This studio engages in the design of regenerative buildings and cities as havens for refugees. The transformation of a region long dominated by the mining, processing and combustion of coal is our focus. The project is staged in the fascinating region of Lusatia between Berlin and the Polish border, where brown coal is being quarried in vast open-cut fields swallowing up villages, burnt day and night, heating the atmosphere, turning our oceans into acid – and us all into climate refugees. Bold and rapid action is needed to cease and reverse environmental, social and cultural destruction. This studio pursues the model transformation of planet endangering worlds into regenerative oases, confronting global warming and the refugee age through the rise of resilient regions and the transition to renewable energy. Here we develop new approaches to architecture and landscape design.

Learning from Jerusalem

ÂŤConflict, Negotiation and the Architecture of the CityÂť is the theme that will be carried forward by the Studio Schwarz in collaboration with Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the municipality of Jerusalem. Our task will be based on the observation and the understating of this disputed territory and its origin, in order to find the reason and the essence of peace. We will be focused on the physical borderlines between Palestine and Israel, but also on the political, ethical, ideological and every kind of border and aspect that divides or unifies its society. We will continue also with the theme of concentration and its relation to sustainability, understanding all the layers of culture, history and architecture, which are translated into knowledge. The subject will be first approached by the analysis of the three physical parameters of reality: time, space and matter. Then we will get closer to it with an excursion seminar in Jerusalem, that will help to clarify many of the questions that arise with the research and will allow us to create our own imaginary of the city and its situation. The result then will be a project that aims to serve as base for the resolution of conflicts and to shape the ideal of peace for the future.

A New School of Thought

Studio Staub will focus on the design of new schools of thought, in close collaboration with institutions and individuals working on the ongoing research project with the same name, short «NeST». www.uni.li/nest We will conceive and design proposals for a new school of thought within the architectural realm. A common digital archive of precedents will serve as a basis for the formulation of manifestos for the students’ very own new schools of thought, taking a position on the current architectural scene / milieu and the contemporary system of architectural education. We will speculate on what and how to learn, while simultaneously conceive, imagine and design spaces that emerge from your manifesto and your ideological conception of knowledge production. By proposing spatial and syntactic structures, the projects will manifest different forms of learning processes and mediation. During our Design Seminar we will travel to London to experience new forms of architectural mediation as well as meeting and working with our research partners and colleagues at the Architectural Association School of Architecture (AA), the Bartlett and the Royal College of Art among many other institutions. The student’s work will be included in a publication, event and performance part of the Salon Suisse 2016 on the opening day of the 15th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale, in Venice.

Lusatia

The Climate Refuge City Studio on Lusatia will be supported by an independent weeklong design seminar and excursion to Cottbus, Jänschwalde and the International Building Exposition (IBA) in Lusatia, 130 km south-east of Berlin, in the region of Brandenburg, Germany. The seminar will focus on Jänschwalde Power Station and its surrounding areas. In 2007, the station was ranked by WWF as the fourth most dirty power plant in Europe. With the closure of the plant by 2024, the communities of the region are now facing the challenge of restoring scarred landscapes, rebuilding towns lost to mining activities, regenerating regional economies that are no longer fossil-fuel based, and rehonouring regional cultures fragmented by rapid territorial change. The communities have contacted us and are looking for ideas to address these challenges. Our mission: a five-day / six-night program, featuring hosted excursions, expert presentations, community-oriented seminars and urban design studio sessions. Specialised visits to local communities and tours of IBA-Fürst-Puckler will serve to inform design programs, planning and building approaches for the Lusatia Studio. Discussions with key experts will ground designs to real-world issues and solutions. Intensive studio charrettes will inspire the creation of first design strategies through mixed-media, to be presented at the Cottbus Kraftwerk Museum by the end of the seminar week. Contributions by international architects, urbanists, and engineers, with the engagement of regional leaders, NGOs and local communities.

Jerusalem

The Design Seminar will take us closer to the city and culture of Jerusalem. The programme will be based on a series of tours in and around the city of Jerusalem, providing meetings and interaction with local communities, stakeholders, non-governmental and governmental organizations. Tours will be guided by experts in the complex urban condition of the city. The focus on borderlines will be further developed, by analysing different sites with this particular situation, where architecture and urban solutions play a primordial role in the relation between the different communities. The concentration of knowledge will be widened by the interaction with students and professors from the partner universities. We will do a workshop to summarize the experiences and to compare the points of view from a local and an external perspective.

London

This Design Seminar will investigate different schools of thought within the realm of the architectural discipline and its relation to the public. London as an exceptional metropolitan city will offer us a rich tableau of multiple forms for mediating architecture and different methods of mediating architectural knowledge. We understand architects not as mere service providers but active public figures initiating and implementing communal improvements. Therefore, special attention will be paid on the role of the architect and thus of architecture in form of communal events and on the idea of activism as a method of conceiving and transforming space. In order to provide insight into activities that engage the public through actions, events and spaces we will visit several projects that highlight an inclusive approach to design. They can stem from a variety of institutions and activists, including schools of architecture, professional bodies, community groups and individuals. We will visit schools of architecture such as the Architectural Association School of Architecture, one of our Design Studio partners, or the Bartlett and meet their faculty and students. We will engage in a discourse with participants organising architectural festivals, exhibitions and other public events, as well with experts from local councils to understand the impact public engagement can have on a community. Finally, we will of course also meet practitioners and architects who’s initiatives have had a lasting impact on London.

Cultural Identities Concept: Vera Kaps

Identities are not something given, yet they are a matter of course. We shape and change them permanently, to reflect on us and on our cultural context. On the one hand, traditions and cultures of memory play an important role for this social process. On the other hand, we negotiate our cultural identities also by critically discussing our present and by developing visions. The focus, however, is man himself, who constructs identities through versatile forms of (in)tangible communication. In winter semester 2016/17, we deal with the issue of cultural identities. As preparation and discussion in the design studios, three lectures illuminate the many facets of this phenomenon. The topic will be elaborated on not only from the perspective of architects and spatial planners, but will also be expanded by cultural studies, curatorial, historical, artistic and sociological perspectives. Through the discussion of specific places on our doorstep as well as with abstract spaces in our global world, the lecturers scrutinize our thinking, designing and our fields of activity as architects and spatial planners. www.uni.li/architecture 03.03.2016 18:00–19:00 Anna heringer H1, University of Liechtenstein 14.04.2016 18:00–19:00 Michael schindhelm Auditorium, University of Liechtenstein
