THE ART OF BEING A DUCK

for FamiliesandParentsDuckCALENDAR2022–23

WELCOME TO THE UNIVERSITY OF OREGON GO DUCKS!

The first year of college is an exciting time for the whole family. We know parents and family members have many questions—from academic advising and major requirements to meal plans and health services. All of us here at the UO are committed to the success of your students, and we are ready to help make the transition a smooth one.

Enjoy the year and Go Ducks!

It is a real pleasure to welcome you and your student to the University of Oregon family!

Roger J. Thompson Vice President for Student Services and Enrollment Management

This calendar is a valuable resource for parents and family members; check it regularly for important dates, deadlines, and tips. Lastly, I know these are unique times. Please know we are here for you and your student. If we can do anything at all, please do connect with us. We have provided you a directory, and we are only a phone call or text message away.

It is our goal that all Ducks leave the UO ready and eager to question critically, think logically, communicate clearly, act creatively, and live ethically. I know we will reach that goal by drawing on the deep commitment to learning shared by our students, faculty, and staff—and by forging a successful partnership with parents and families.

Choosing which university to attend may be the first major decision young people make in their lives. I am proud that your student has chosen to live and learn among the University of Oregon’s community of scholars, and I look forward to the day when I applaud the class of 2026 as they celebrate at graduation.

the uno cial tune of Duck football, is played between the 3rd and 4th quarters to bring more energy to the crowd. The song was featured in the 1978 movie Animal House which was filmed at the University of Oregon.

The Walk to Autzen takes spirited game day fans over the Willamette River and through the woods from main campus to Autzen Stadium.

is one of the most recognized and iconic mascots in the nation. The Duck rides on a motorcycle to open each game, does pushup challenges, dances, and brings laughter to the whole crowd.

Throwing the O was invented by former band director Steven Paul. It was popularized by Joey Harrington after beating the Beavers in 2001, as a way to tell the band to play “Mighty Oregon” over the noise of the Autzen crowd.

1999: Merchandise: The UO had limited ownership over Donald Duck. Disney allowed the UO to sell merchandise with Donald’s logo locally, but the school could not use Disney branding beyond Oregon.

Mallard Drake: A cartoonist for the “Daily Emerald” created Mallard Drake as an attempt to replace Donald Duck. Students were asked to vote, but Donald Duck won by a landslide.

First Mascot Costume: Students and alumni voted to confirm Webfoots as the official mascot. The Webfoot costume is the oldest known Duck costume at the UO and now stands on display at the UO’s athletic offices.

The mascot only lasted one year. 1955 1923 1932

2002 1999 1978

Puddles: A fraternity began the tradition of catching a duck and bringing it to games. The duck was named Puddles and served as the mascot until the Humane Society issued several complaints.

1937 1943

Donald Duck: Donald Duck had his first major appearance in 1937. Students loved the cartoon and featured him heavily in the 1943 yearbook. A deal with Walt Disney was then made in 1947 allowing the UO to use Donald Duck as a mascot.

Mandrake: Mandrake was created by Nike to appeal to the younger generation. Students gave Mandrake the nicknames “Robo Duck” and “Duck Vader.”

FINANCIAL AID AND SCHOLARSHIPS

First and last name Mailbox # (found in My Housing) Street address (found in My Housing). Eugene, OR 97403

Students receive mail and packages at their Housing Service Center. If you are planning to mail something, include the student’s first and last name (as it is in their My Housing portal) along with their mailbox number. Students can view their mailing address in their My Housing portal a week before their check-in. Please send mail only after the student has checked in. Note: This information is subject to change. Loan and grant aid is applied directly to student billing accounts to first pay for tuition and fees, then the balance of funds that is owed to students to pay for their off-campus room and board if they do not live on campus, for books and supplies, and for other expenses.

The Office of Business Affairs uses an online billing and payment acceptance service, QuikPAY, to manage student charges incurred. Your student will receive a monthly email notification when the billing statement is ready. To view and securely pay the bill online, students log onto DuckWeb using their UO ID and personal access code (PAC), and click “QuikPAY Student Account” in the “Student Menu.” If you will be inquiring, viewing, or making payments on your student’s billing account, the student will need to establish you as an authorized payer on the QuikPAY system.

As increasing cost continues to affect accessibility to education, various UO resources are available to assist students in financing their education. Conscientious planning and management of personal finances can also help students reach their goal of earning an undergraduate degree at the university.

UO’s multi-ethnic and international student unions emphasize cultural awareness and appreciation, and offer opportunities for fellowship and community building. These groups’ annual campus events showcase different aspects of various cultures, ranging from food to the performance arts. International Student and Scholar Services and the Associated Students of the University of Oregon (ASUO) websites provide information on existing student organizations.

MULTICULTURAL STUDENT UNIONS

ACCESSIBLE EDUCATION CENTER

The Accessible Education Center coordinates services and provides support to students with documented physical, learning, or psychological disabilities. It facilitates equal educational opportunities for integration into university programs and activities by providing accommodations to students with disabilities on a case-by-case basis and serving as a liaison with faculty members.

Diversity means acceptance, respect, and understanding that everyone is unique. It means recognizing individual differences of race, ethnicity, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, gender identity and expression, and other ideologies. The UO affirms and actively promotes the rights of all individuals to equal opportunity in education.

MULTICULTURAL SUPPORT

NONTRADITIONAL STUDENT SUPPORT

LGBT Educational and Support Services in the Office of the Dean of Students represents some of the university’s efforts toward creating a hospitable and accepting campus environment for LGBT students and faculty and staff members. The services of the program include developing and providing educational services related to homophobia, assisting student organizations and academic units in bringing speakers to campus, and serving as a liaison between the university and the LGBT community.

The Center for Multicultural Academic Excellence (CMAE) is dedicated to ensuring all UO students, regardless of their social, cultural, or educational histories, have the opportunity to receive an intellectually adventurous and socially rewarding education. Through focus on academic enrichment, multicultural inclusion, and graduation and postgraduation success, the center aims to promote academic achievement and empower students. The center offers resources to historically underserved or underrepresented groups to enhance inclusive excellence and provide social support and equity.

MULTICULTURAL ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

The Multicultural Center is a place for students, faculty, and staff members to meet and discuss issues of race and cultural pluralism at the UO. The center was created to promote a more inclusive environment for everyone, and it is committed to education about cultural and ethnic diversity. The center cosponsors events that highlight various cultures, and its library contains books and videos on multicultural issues.

Nontraditional students—students over the age of 24, re-entering the university after a break, or who are parents—are offered support through the Office of the Dean of Students, the Nontraditional Student Union, and the Tutoring and Academic Engagement Center. These units’ goals are to identify the needs of nontraditional students and provide resources and referrals that will assist them in obtaining their degrees. CommunityDiverse
