CHARITY WOODRUM HOMETOWN: MYRTLE CREEK, OREGON MAJOR: PHYSICS
Charity joined the race to find and detect gravitational waves as an undergraduate intern at NASA. Combing through a month’s worth of data from the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope, she dialed in to just four milliseconds to check for gamma ray bursts. Though she didn’t discover new gravitational data, she made waves of her own, and presented her work to top NASA scientists. 2
EXCEL IN YOUR FIELD Hard work deserves recognition. Challenge yourself and distinguish your degree with departmental honors. Whether or not you’re enrolled in the Clark Honors College, you can earn honors through a number of departmental honors programs. Offerings and requirements vary, but generally include advanced upper division courses in your major and completion of a research project.
ERIC HAMMERSCHMITH HOMETOWN: EUGENE, OREGON MAJORS: BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY
Researching infections caused by nematodes can be hard, because you can’t test on a person. The solution? Species 34, a worm that hitches a ride on fig‑pollinating wasps without hurting them. For departmental honors, Eric joined the UO’s Phillips Laboratory. He worked to trick the worms into thinking they’re on a wasp. By isolating the worms based on their islands of origin, he helped further our understanding of parasitic species. “Signing up for departmental honors helped solidify what I wanted to do as a career,” Eric says. “It truly gave me hands-on experience in the joys and challenges of research.” Now, Eric’s ready to take on a master’s program, right here at the UO.

CLARK HONORS COLLEGE
Small, discussion-based classes and faculty mentorship are the hallmarks of the Clark Honors College.
AN AVERAGE OF
15 STUDENTS PER CLASS, ALL TAUGHT BY A PROFESSOR
When Professor Robert D. Clark founded the honors college at the University of Oregon in 1960, he said that providing small, intensive liberal arts courses for high-achieving students was “a radical idea.” Nearly 60 years later, we still like to veer from the norm. Our classes pair biology and politics, art and ecology. The multi-disciplinary approach provides a fresh perspective on traditional subjects, and our tight-knit community of

WELL-ROUNDED “The interdisciplinary classes have been so fascinating. The colloquia have been foundational in helping me engage very thoroughly with academic concepts, but also allow for a lot of self-reflection.”
In the honors college, we believe that by tackling a wide range of subjects, you’ll gain the most important skill of all: you’ll learn how to learn. Our curriculum replaces the university’s core education requirements and includes a wide variety of liberal arts and sciences courses open only to honors college students. As a student in the honors college, you’ll take:

BUILDING FUTURE FOR THE
The Phil and Penny Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact is already fueling growing opportunities in bioengineering, neuroengineering, and precision medicine. Each year, the Knight Campus selects a handful of the most promising young students to be Knight Campus Undergraduate Scholars. The scholars are paired with research mentors — graduate students, postdocs, and faculty members — and immersed in a 12-month, comprehensive experience in Knight Campus-affiliated labs. The result? Researchers ready to tackle society’s most pressing scientific challenges.
DAN TUDORICA HOMETOWN: PORTLAND, OR MAJOR: BIOCHEMISTRY
Dan’s ultimate dream is to work in medical research, and he views biochemistry as a strong start toward that goal. It’s a discipline that encompasses both practical skills and interesting theory, which has ignited Dan’s passion for research. As part of the small and select group of Knight Campus Undergraduate Scholars, Dan works closely with mentor Arden Perkins, a post-doctoral fellow in the lab of highly respected biology professor Karen Guillemin. By investigating how bacteria sense and respond to their environment, Dan and his fellow researchers untangle questions about the natural world in search of better understanding of the interactions between microbes and their hosts..
